Elegies for the Brokenhearted: A Novel ReviewI saw this on the "Favorites" bookshelf at my library and checked it out. It has around 5 or 6 pieces dedicated to a different person, now deceased, and the effect that person had on the narrator's life. The author understands struggling and what it's like to be poor. This should be required reading for every middle class born American who thinks they know what poverty or a coming from a 'broken' home is like. This book nails it.
The author captures and gives authentic voice to a variety of characters, from a former child prodigy to a sharp-tongued but witty black college student (I think I worked with this girl at the Tic Tock drive-in several years ago.) There was much to inform and amuse and I found myself laughing hard during more than one of the chapters, but especially during the final chapter. Sad stories, but isn't humor born of sadness?
I generally check books out of the library but I'm buying this one for my sister, Michelle. Happy BirthdayElegies for the Brokenhearted: A Novel Overview
