Circle of Lies ReviewThis was a fun read from the beginning. One reviewer on another site mentioned that it was hard to find in the stores and I agree. Eventually,I purchased it through Amazon and it arrived promptly. I don't recall reading many books by Tor/Forge and I know they are a big publisher, but if they want to make money, and I assume they do, they might spend a little time getting their books out to the public. This was really my only complaint and it is with the publisher and not the writer who did a great job.
When an author hooks you from the first page with a well-written intelligent plot and realistic characters, it indicates talent. Alan doesn't disappoint here. The story runs at a rapid clip and the reader will find their a hundred pages into the book before they come up for air. From my standpoint, John Delaney is a hands down winner. He's smart, streetwise, and an attorney who used to be a homicide detective. He's also something of a bulldog, methodically linking one clue into the next. He is aided by his wife, Katherine, also a lawyer. Together they make quite a team. The byplay in their relationship was also fun to observe.
The plot of an evil drug company setting someone up may be a little tired, but Alan does it as well as anyone eventually and expands the conspiracy to include the government. Maybe a little formulaic, but not bad. I found it admirable that Delaney had a number of doubts about his own client's innocence. In other words, he doesn't accept things at face value. These doubts eventually filter down to the reader who is kept off balance until nearly the end of the story. Also is plus is the fact that the descriptions don't go on for pages and the dialogue is snappy and upbeat.
"CIRCLE OF LIES" is definitely a winner.
Nice job for new author, Douglas Alan.Circle of Lies Overview
