The Chicken Club ReviewGlenna Thompson's The Chicken Club is an insightful narrative depicting the life of divorcees and single parents. Through the trials and tribulations of the main characters, Renee and Angela, readers get a first-hand look at life-after-marriage. Renee, a divorcee of ten years and Angela, seven-years divorced are both single moms who strive to reacquaint themselves with their sociable, adventurous selves now that their children are grown.
The Chicken Club, geared for female audiences, teaches a number of important--perhaps difficult--lessons, with none greater than learning to love yourself, despite your imperfections.
The most powerful dynamic in The Chicken Club is the sisterhood between Renee and Angela, who serve essentially as safety nets for each other. From sharing fears to motivating each other to shed some pounds, the duo is intent on making positive changes in their lives. The narrator states, "They had endured the working world single-handedly; dealt with monetary concerns; combated loneliness, weariness, and heartbreak, all while doing their best to cultivate healthy, happy environments for their children."
Both women, fed up with their abandonment issues and self loathe, go through a series of wild incidences, ranging from playing spin the bottle with random strangers at bars, letting loose at adult stores, and experimenting with online dating. The end result is their remarkable transformation from frightened, reserved moths to free butterflies.
Although Renee and Angela meet men to whom they take a liking, they discover the hard way that the world has changed considerably since the last time they had male companionship. A prime example is when Renee is chatting online with LoneWolf4U; she quickly realizes that people, especially online, are not who they initially seem to be.
More importantly, the message that The Chicken Club delivers is about solidarity and banding together; regardless of what the future may hold in terms of relationships and the opposite sex. The Chicken Club is a supportive group where women can bond together and "find peace, joy, and happiness"; the Chicken Club would always have each other."
Glenna Thompson expertly draws readers into her story through a distinctive writing style and inviting tone--indeed, readers feel as though they are part of the Chicken Club. The Chicken Club is an excellent read that will put your own life in perspective, and keep you thinking long after you've finished the book.
