Ten Big Ones (Stephanie Plum, No. 10) ReviewThis series has been consistently good. Some books are better than others. "Ten Big Ones" is not particularly inspired - but then "To The Nines" is a hard act to follow. The thing that is bothering me is that although Stephanie and Joe are growing characters - the rest of the cast is not. Ranger remains a one dimensional being. He is unable to share any part of himself. Janet continually creates opportunities for him to develop his relationship with Stephanie - and Stephanie is open to it but he is never able to be human. Lula is becoming cartoon character. I resent this very much. She began to grow when she stopped being a prostitute. She got a real job. Now, all she is - is bored - and I'm getting bored with her. She can be funny and outrageous and still become a person! Stephanie's mother is stiffled. When is she going to break-out of the rut? I want to see these people go somewhere. Not just Stephanie and Joe - but the whole cast. However, I like the way Joe and Stephanie are growing. As a couple, they are comfortable and Stephanie has time to continue finding herself. Joe is becoming a man, a partner. I agree with the other reviewers that the story line is becoming predictable. I think Janet needs to talk with people other than her fans and get some objective feedback. I will continue to read this series because I am fond of the characters but I hope that Janet will consider that there needs to be some substance within the slapstick.Ten Big Ones (Stephanie Plum, No. 10) Overview

Gingerbread Cookie Murder ReviewThis highly entertaining trio of novellas would make a terrific Christmas gift--but not for anyone who hates the holidays. The plethora of dastardly murders presented here might give them ideas.
Joanne Fluke's "Gingerbread Cookie Murder" delivers not only recipes for sweet treats, but a cautionary tale about the dangers of too-flamboyant Christmas displays. (OK, that wasn't the actual motive for murder, but I'm sure it didn't help.)
Leslie Meier's "Gingerbread Cookies and Gunshots" is the most low-key story in the collection, a quiet, touching description of Lucy Stone's investigation involving a small boy's disappearance. Plus recipes.
Laura Levine's "The Dangers of Gingerbread Cookies," was my favorite entry. Prozac the cat is back, with snappier dialogue than ever. This tale of two "doctors" even has our feline heroine playing a crucial role in exposing--literally and figuratively--a killer. (Considering the expertise with which Prozac manages to cadge everyone's tastiest food throughout the story, it'd be interesting to see some of her recipes...) As always in Levine's Jaine Austen yarns, the obvious warmth and affection between Jaine and her family (which most definitely includes Prozac) is a warm touch for a cold fall/winter night. Even if Jaine's dad's efforts to play Junior Detective don't work nearly as well as her cat's.
All in all, this is a fine way for a mystery lover to get into the holiday spirit.Gingerbread Cookie Murder Overview

Deadly Threads (Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries) ReviewJosie Prescott is the owner of Prescott's Antiques & Auctions. While teaching a workshop on vintage clothing, she discovers the strangled body of her friend and guest lecturer, Riley Jordan, hidden beneath a display table. Employees and workshop attendees fall under suspicion. Also a suspect is the philandering, celebrity chef husband, Bobby Jordan. Hank, the adopted, stray cat, finds an invaluable clue, a pearl rosette button; it is the key to solving the crime. An employee, Gretchen Brock, caught a glimpse of the killer's silver car; soon afterwards, numerous attempts are made on her life. Josie must find the killer before he/she succeeds in giving Gretchen a case of permanent amnesia.
"Deadly Threads" is an entertaining cozy in Jane K. Cleland's highly successful Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries series. Once again, Josie must become an amateur sleuth in solving a murder connected to her antique store. She reminds me of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. Old-fashioned clues in the form of vintage clothing - not modern, forensic evidence - are used to identify the murderer. Josie is very dependent on the local police force and media for supplying her with valuable information, and vice versa. She can't solve the murder without the aid of Chief Ellis Hunter and Wes Smith, the investigative reporter for the "Seacoast Star."
The killer's identity came as a great surprise; I never suspected this person. However, he/she spent at least ten minutes providing an unprovoked confession that probably won't be permissible in court. Fortunately, there is a large quantity of other evidence to convict him/her. I found the confession unrealistic as I did other elements of the story. Prescott's Antiques & Auctions is too perfect. The boss is very understanding and accommodating and all the employees love each other. I work with mostly women and there is constant whining, complaining and backstabbing; it's a veritable war zone. At Prescott's, the birds are always singing, the coffee is always percolating and everyone is munching on Cara's home-baked cookies. Reading "Deadly Threads" nearly gave me a toothache; this novel is very sappy sweet.
I like cozies that make me laugh out loud; "Deadly Threads" did not. The only time I snickered was when Gretchen referred to herself as a cookie ho. Furthermore, the quaint, coastal village of Rocky Point, New Hampshire, with its friendly, affluent citizens, is the typical cozy setting; it is not a unique one. Josie's finding of clues and the occasional attack on her employee, Gretchen, help propel the plot onward; however, another murder would've greatly added impetus. As it was, there were times when the overall plot became stagnant. Josie overreacting to every dilemma grew tiresome.
In all fairness, I did find "Deadly Threads" to be very romantic. It deals much with love - love won and love lost. Old relationships, such as the one Josie shares with Ty Alverez, are being strengthened and new relationships, such as the one Gretchen has with Jack Stene, are blossoming. Riley Jordan, the reader learns, was a very generous, remarkable woman, which made her death the more tragic. Also, from reading this novel, I learned more about the time consuming, often arduous, task involved in appraising antiques, especially vintage clothing. I also learned some interesting tips on how to distinguish genuine pearls from their synthetic counterparts.
"Deadly Threads" is recommended for those readers who like their cozies sweet and charming. It is for readers who want an intelligent, but vulnerable, female heroine; they are readers who also fantasize about working in the perfect company where all the employees love each other and the boss is sympathetic, patient and understanding. Women, like my mom, who love and collect antiques, will want to read "Deadly Threads" as well as its predecessors in the Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries series. Readers should be warned that it is not hilarious like other cozies such as Parnell Hall's "The KenKen Killings," Laura DiSilverio's "Swift Justice" and Joelle Charbonneau's "Skating Around the Law."Joseph B. Hard Eight (A Stephanie Plum Novel) ReviewWhen Evelyn Soder disappears with her daughter, it means big trouble for her mother, Mabel Markowitz. The judge in Evelyn's divorce insisted on a child custody bond and Evelyn's ex-husband is intent on collecting it. Mabel co-signed for the bond, and now she may lose her home. Stephanie Plum, unlucky in love and fugitive apprehension, becomes involved because Mabel is her parents' neighbor. Mabel bakes when she is upset, and the Plums are drowning in bread loaves and coffee cakes.
And so, begins yet another comic adventure in the strange world of 'The Burg,' Trenton's own twilight zone. Soon she finds herself in conflict with Eddie Abruzzi, who is a sociopathic crime lord when he isn't being a sociopathic war gamer. Eddie wants Stephanie out of the Soder investigation, and is perfectly willing to make her crazy before he finally kills her. In addition, Stephanie must deal with Andy Bender, a bond-skipping drunk with a talent for getting Plum to trip over her own feed.
Nor should I fail to mention a lawyer whose name is not spelled c-l-o-w-n, a female apprehension agent who is almost as good as Ranger (and who doesn't keep losing cars, purses and handcuffs), and that usual mad gang of crooks, cohorts and lovers. Yes, Stephanie's love life becomes even more complicated while everything else is going on. Without TastyCakes and pizza, Plum would be well on the way to a nervous breakdown.
This all is typical Evanovich. In fact, it is a bit too typical. Very few writers are able to avoid formula writing when a series begins to stretch out into extra innings, and 'Hard Eight' has started to show the inevitable signs of strain. As a plot, it is very reminiscent of 'High Five.' But while that was fun and original, this time the sight gags and sarcasm are beginning to wear thin. Evanovich's solution seems to be to have the same things happen, but even more often. This time Stephanie loses enough cars and handcuffs to stock a small police department.
The single thing that bother's me most is the degeneration of Stephanie's character. Not all that long ago, she was a feisty woman who was down on her luck but determined to make things come out right. The humor was clever and she often gave as good as she got. Now she is a near incompetent who spends to much time being a victim of her own poor choices. The humor has shifted to slapstick and too often Stephanie is the joke. And she has started to rely on anyone but herself when problems occur. Often this is funny, but I keep finding myself wincing rather than laughing. I want the old Stephanie back.Hard Eight (A Stephanie Plum Novel) Overview

Touch-Me-Not: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery (Martha's Vineyard Mysteries) ReviewIn his office at Watts Electrical Supply in Oak Bluffs, electrician LeRoy Watts uses a taser on his former assistant Jerry Sparks when the latter had the gall to threaten to blackmail him. Jerry crumbled to the office floor dead. LeRoy knows his nine year old twin sons Zeke and Jared will be coming by once baseball practice ends, so he places the corpse in a closet with plans to dispose of the body later.
After the kids leave, LeRoy removes the stiff from his office closet and places the corpse in a book storage shed at the West Tisbury library. Also at the library are the "mathematical" knitters doing Moebius strips and more. Their current project is a coral reef quilt to raise awareness of global warming. Knitter Maron asks nonagenarian Deputy Sheriff Victoria Trumbull for help with an obscene serial phone caller; and boat splicer Emily Cameron wants to know what happened to her boyfriend Jerry. Victoria is back in the middle of a murder mystery.
The latest ninety-two years young Victoria Trumbull police procedural (see Death and Honesty) is a wonderful cozy that uses Martha's Vineyard as an idyllic backdrop for mayhem and for family issues caused when the middle generation arrives to help her daughter cope with her elderly mother. At times the story line turns amusing for instance with LeRoy's efforts to dispose of the body only to have his family and later three law enforcement officials (including the heroine) visit him with none aware of Jerry's fate; mindful of Hitchcock's comedic The Trouble With Harry. Cynthia Riggs is at the top of her game with this strong Trumbull entry.

Antiques to Die For (Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries) ReviewJosie Prescott and her best friend, Rosalie Chaffee, are indeed sisters of the heart. They have both lost their parents, a loss that undeniably has shaped the women they have become. While they don't have a whole lot else in common, this invisible bond makes them closer than one might otherwise expect. Rosalie is fun loving and carefree, qualities Josie envies, but she is also an exceptionally fine older sister and guardian to Paige, her 12-year-old sibling. When Rosalie washes up on the Rocky Point shoreline - the victim of a suspicious drowning - Josie is stirred into action.
Rosalie has confided several things in Josie recently, any one of which might have some bearing on her death. In addition, Rosalie had garnered the attention of a creepy "secret admirer," whose unwanted attention seems to switch almost seamlessly to Josie once Rosalie is out of the picture. Rosalie also confided in her younger sister that they own something priceless for which they would eventually need Josie's expertise - although Paige and Josie have no idea what that item might be. In addition, when Josie starts probing, she finds out how little she actually knows about her friend.
Although it is all but impossible to imagine Josie having such carte blanche to investigate a murder even if her boyfriend IS the chief of police, the plot was enjoyable and complex enough to hold the reader's attention through to the end. If you like a side of antiques with your murder mystery, you'll undoubtedly enjoy the Josie Prescott Antiques Mystery series.

The Prodigal Nun: A Sister Agatha Mystery (Sister Agatha Mysteries) ReviewI have read all the Sister Agnes books so far, but they are not up to the quality of Thurlo's (written with her husband) Ella Chah series. These are written on a middle school level and are "sweet" rather than realistic. Much background on the Catholic church is interesting, but is repeated in book after book. The Prodigal Nun: A Sister Agatha Mystery (Sister Agatha Mysteries) Overview

Skating Over the Line: A Mystery ReviewAll Rebecca wants is to sell the skating rink and return to Chicago, but when Pop's friend's car is stolen, Rebecca reluctantly takes the case, only to find the car ablaze. With a visit from her estranged father and being threatened, Rebecca has her hands full trying to find an arsonist car-thief. What a fun read! This was an enjoyable story from the moment I opened the book and read the first line. The mystery kept me turning the pages and the lovable and eccentric characters of Indian Falls entertained me with their humorous antics and engaging dialogue. I look forward to more adventures with Rebecca and gang in this charming and delightful series.

Biggie and the Meddlesome Mailman ReviewJob's Crossing, Texas is a small town where everyone knows one another and secrets are hard to keep. However, most residents prefer that their neighbors mind their own business. Letter carrier Luther Abernathy prefers gossip. He goes out of his way to attain information on people and disseminates his findings to anyone he meets.

However, Luther must have found one secret that its owner wanted kept buried because he is found dead by Biggie Weatherford and her grandson J.R. in what appears to be a car accident. However, Biggie and J.R. know that Luther was murdered because the killing blow to his head came from behind not in front as it would have in a vehicle crash. Biggie has a lot on her plate and has no time to investigate Luther's death. Still, whichever item she works on, somehow she and J.R. keep ending up in the middle of a murder investigation.

BIGGIE AND THE MEDDLESOME MAILMAN is a wonderful entry in a warm series. The who-done-it is obvious, but retains a cozy charm to it thanks in part due to the strong showing of the secondary players coming off the bench to propel the tale forward. Biggie and the narrating J.R. are a fabulous amateur sleuth duo whose milieu seems to always be a homicide investigation no matter how hard they try otherwise. Nancy Bell provides her audience with a comical look at small town Texas that retains the freshness of the previous three entries.

The Lost Women of Lost Lake (Jane Lawless Mysteries) ReviewHart has won tons of awards and nominations for awards, but she deserves to be a national name in the mystery field. Why? Two excellent reasons. Whereas far too many crime writers offer plots that give themselves away, Hart consistently challenges you in book after finely-crafted book. She's simply one of the best plotters around. And then there's her particular take on crime fiction. Lots of writers, perhaps too many, focus their plots on recent happenings/motives, but Hart is fascinated at showing the influence of sometimes decades-old events in the current day. I love this about her work, the way in which we can't escape our own pasts and sometimes get drawn into the pasts of other people. It's eerie, it's dramatic, it's real. Lost Women does what Hart does best and makes me think she's what Loren D. Estleman is for Michigan: a master of the craft, a crime writer's inspiration, a crime writing fan's delight. The Lost Women of Lost Lake (Jane Lawless Mysteries) Overview

Antiques Knock-Off (Trash 'n' Treasures Mysteries) ReviewHaving not read those before this in the series, I thought that I may be behind, but I was brought up to speed quickly in this fast paced, comical mystery. It reminded me a great deal of the Spillman Files series by Lisa Lutz, a series that I love. The parenthesis act like footnotes of the character writing the story and mostly are added for a little humorous tidbit. I enjoyed the characters and felt like I knew them and imgaine if I would have read the books in order I would have known them even better. I will be going back to catch up. Unraveled (A Knitting Mystery) ReviewUnraveled is the ninth book in the Knitting Mystery series and a very delightful read.
Kelly's friends at Lambspun are walking on egg shells around around her after the recent breakup of her and Steve. So Jennifer, a real estate agent, invites Kelly to ride to the canyon with her to inspect some property she has under contract. As they turn onto the drive of the property, the owners wife passes them. Upon entering the house Kelly and Jennifer find the owner shot in the head with a WW II gun lying nearby. The deceased man has had a history of bad real estate dealings. The deceased was in the middle of a heated divorce, one of Keely's clients has also had run-ins with him. So it is time for Kelly "Sherlock" Flynn and her friend Burt Parker put their heads together To find the killer. In Kelly's "real job" as an accountant she needs to visit various contractor meetings and dinners. After one of these Kelly is invited to a volley ball game where she crosses paths with Steve. This is one of the funniest scenes that I have read in a long time. Kelly has a bunch of zany friends and they also provided much enjoyment in this book. I always look forward to the next book in Maggie Sefton's knitting series. As always there is a recipes and knitting pattern included.Unraveled (A Knitting Mystery) Overview

The Strange Death of Father Candy: A Suspense Novel ReviewNot since this summer and reading Jodi Picoult's Nineteen Minutes has a novel stayed with me the way The Strange Death of Father Candy seems to be. I didn't expect this novel to be so gripping. I expected it to be as formulaic as Roberts' Milan Jacovich novels have become. Certainly, we are reminded (somewhat too) constantly that the main character, Dominick Candiotti is a Viet Nam War Veteran, who in his assignment as a Black Op assasin, committed heinous crimes in the name of war and our country. But we are spared the restaurant tours, weather reports, city tours and fashion reviews of the Milans.
"Nick" Candiotti is not a nice person. There is nothing likeable about him. He grew up mean and tough on the dirty, poor streets of Youngstown, Ohio, mostly unaware of and when he grew up, accepting of his family's association with The Mob influence in that city. Then, he abandoned his family and friends, including the woman he says he loved, to move to Chicago to make a new life for himself. When his favorite brother, Richard, a priest, supposedly commits suicide, Nick returns to Youngstown to investigate his brother's death, and insinuates himself back into his family, his association with both ruling Mob Families in the city and into bed with his now-married lover whose sexual preferences have come to include firm roots in S & M. His sister, Teresa, delivers what is most probably the best speech in the book when she screams at him to return to Chicago, that he isn't wanted or welcome in Youngstown any longer and that the city would be no worse off if he weren't there. She exemplifies all of the women in the book. No female character in the book seems to have any redeeming qualities, even down to a hotel desk clerk who, mercifully, is not described as "adorable". Nick is the only one who wants justice for his brother and will not accept, as the others have, that Fr. Candy's death was "just" a suicide. The ending of the book is bloody and gruesome as Nick extracts his revenge for his brother's death. And, we reach the last chapter of the book not liking Nick any more than we did at the first.
I know that this novel was "in the works" for quite some time. This is obvious. It is a tightly written, absorbing read. Even I cannot find much fault with what Roberts has set down on the pages. It's obvious that he did his homework on this one. He's back with a wonderful publisher and seems to have availed himself of their professional proof-readers and red-pencil wielders. I would love to see this novel climb up the charts. Nice work, Sparky. You've got a winner with this one.

Clutches and Curses (Haley Randolph Mysteries) ReviewEnded excellent. I wasn't so sure about Haley at first, she seemed to be a spoiled woman, shopping and drinking frapps nonstop without a work ethic was driving me crazy. But somewhere along this cute little mystery, she grew on me and I am very sad it ended. I can't wait to pick up more Haley!
When Haley's mom wants her to fill in at the mother daughter week spa thing, she decided to go to Vegas on the spur to help the department store she works for get a new store together. Haley doesn't have much of a work ethic -- but that doesn't stop her from finding bodies! What is worse is the person that was murdered is a classmate from high school, one Haley was supposed to stay with. When that puts her on the detective's radar, Haley has a reason to find out as much as they do who really murdered Courtney.
This was a pretty believable story and Haley will grow on you with her milkshakes and her funny ways. She made me laugh out loud too many times, which makes it a extra thumbs up in my opinion! Can't wait to read backwards in the series now and I hope there are more Haley adventures in the future!Clutches and Curses (Haley Randolph Mysteries) Overview

Behind the Seams (A Crochet Mystery) Review"Behind the Seams" is a cozy mystery with a crochet theme. It's the sixth book in the series, but it can be read as a stand-alone and doesn't spoil the mysteries in the previous books.
The whodunit was on my list of possible suspects from the start, and I was certain of whodunit long before Molly was. However, the clues weren't obvious, so it was believable that Molly and friends didn't suspect. I found it less believable that Molly kept getting arrested because she was near a crime and due to misunderstandings. The being arrested part, maybe, but not the number of times within a matter of days.
The suspense was created by Nell potentially being arrested for murder and the relationship tensions between Molly and her boyfriend. It was clear that Molly wasn't committed to the relationship, though. While it was realistic that she took some time to realize this, it lacked the intended tension and so these sections felt slow to me. It might have been more suspenseful if I'd read the previous books.
There were also several scenes that headed toward a very exciting climax then jumped in time until the scene was over (which was confusing) and then had people discussing what had happened. This also cut down on some of the potential tension and excitement.
While the mystery part of the story was completely wrapped up, the author added a relationship cliff-hanger to the last paragraph of the book. But with the guy I didn't like.
Basically, I was left feeling like it should have been a really exciting, interesting book. It had all the right elements. But due to some of the writing choices, the excitement didn't engage me like it could have.
Kissing and such were only implied. There were no sex scenes. There was no bad language. Overall, it was an interesting cozy mystery with an interesting crochet method described in the story and in more detail in the back.

I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.Behind the Seams (A Crochet Mystery) Overview

Spider Web (Benni Harper Mystery) ReviewBenni Harper, curator of San Celina's folk art museum, is busy coordinating the first ever Memory Festival, a celebration of memories of loved ones through quilts, crafts, scrapbooks, photographs, oral history and other tributes. The fair promises to be a wonderful event but is soon overshadowed when a local policeman is wounded, the target of a sniper who has a vendetta against cops.
Benni is concerned for her police-chief husband, Gabe, who may also be a target and is showing signs of post-traumatic stress disorder through violent nightmares about his time in Vietnam. As if this isn't enough, a mysterious woman moves to San Celina who shows more than a passing interest in Gabe, leading Benni to wonder if this is yet another woman from his past.
The Benni Harper series is my favorite in the amateur female sleuth genre. Fowler has a way of telling the story that makes the characters seem real and I like how she brings out Benni's faith in God without this being Christian fiction. By that I mean it is simply a natural part of who the character is without being a primary focus of the story.
With the theme of celebrating the memories of loved ones, Fowler did a good job of letting the reader share Benni's feelings as the character remembered when her mother died and writes, "Losing your mother when you are young changes you; the ground beneath your feet is never quite firm enough. You never completely trust happiness again." And in this description as Benni recalls the death of her first husband, Jack: "His death was no longer a painful throb but more of a soft pinch to my heart. Though you never believe it in those first horrific moments of loss, life does keep moving forward."
Spider Web was a good story and kept my interest throughout. I usually have an idea who the culprit is before the end but this time I was kept guessing. I also didn't anticipate the part the mysterious woman would play in this and future stories. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.Spider Web (Benni Harper Mystery) Overview
