Chasing Lance: The 2005 Tour de France and Lance Armstrong's Ride of a Lifetime (with 20 photos included) ReviewOne expects a respected author like Martin Dugard to cover the sporting event of the 2005 tour thoroughly and interestingly. But the bonus in "Chasing Lance" is Dugard's magnificently reasoned and masterfully written reason why Lance has transcended sport to become an international icon.
One later chapter is great travel writing. Dugard parallels his process of self-discovery of why HE is chasing Lance with a description of his first-time visit to Lourdes. He interweaves his two thought trains so skillfully that when he finishes his tour of the grotto and winds up his personal and painful train of remembrance and reason, I was gifted with a new insight about myself. The chapter brought me through Lance's struggles to not only renew my appreciation for my cancer surviving wife, but also to see my own dreams and struggles, however meager, in both a more realistic light, and at the same time an even brighter one.

At the time of Armstrong's record 7th straight Tour win, I heard a major American TV business news anchor scoff at Armstrong's advertising appeal saying, "Hey, come on, it's BICYCLE racing!" as if no one cares much about it, not like baseball, for instance. But Dugard convinces the reader (like we needed convicing) that the Lance personna is far bigger than the man--and almost everywhere. What Dugard does so well is not only to describe both the race and the phenomenon, but what it is in US that causes us to hold the IDEA of Lance so special.
So far, Lance has published two volumes of autobiography and his mother's memoirs are also available. Beyond these, teammate Michael Barry offers us a look "Inside the Postal Bus" and outdoor writer Daniel Coyle tracks Lance's 2004 season and the genesis of his darker moods in "Lance Armstong's War". Both are easy reads and have much to offer Lance fans, especially fans of bike racing.

Up the Road : Cycling's Modern Era from LeMond to Armstrong ReviewIf you know Samuel Abt's work, you'll know what to expect from this book: a collection of short but beautiful and insightful essays on European racing, all previously published in the International Herald Tribune. Abt's knowledge of Grand Tour racing is vast and his expatriate (American) perspective is unique. He is the undisputed king of the cycling essay.
This collection spans the period from the arrival of the Anglos (the "Foreign Legion") in the early 1980s to Lance Armstrong's seventh Tour de France win in 2005. Don't expect comprehensive coverage, though: the essays are about this and that and, despite Greg LeMond's name in the subtitle, not many of them are about LeMond. The book is garnished with a few Graham Watson photographs.
Much as I treasure Abt's essays-even having read most of these before-I still yearn for the longer thematic work he could set himself to: a history of the Anglos in the European peleton, maybe, or the LeMond racing biography that's never been written. SUNLITE Display Stand ReviewIt's made cheaply both material and the workmanship. It's made of relatively soft metal like chrome colored brass. Bright side of this is it's easy to cut, so if the wheel of you bicycle goes way up high, you can cut it lower with a hack saw with relative ease, at least easier than cutting steel. It supports the weight of a bicycle pretty well but you can't sit on the bike while it's on the stand, of course. Even when I cranked the pedal to the full speed, it was stable to reasonable level. It could have been a better design with hollow aluminium(or good quality steel tube) and lighter and I would have happily paid the higher price for it. The bottom line is this. It's not the most refined looking stand but it works for its purpose and I recommend it to anyone who needs a simple portable bike stand for on location repair or adjustment.SUNLITE Display Stand Overview

Swagman Hang It Bike Hanger ReviewI am very pleased with this bike holder. The shipping was quick, and it's free! This is the perfect space saver for a small area. It was very easy to install; it took maybe 10 minutes. You just turn the pole and it secures itself to the ceiling and the floor, screw on the bike rests and you're done! No screws are necessary though the rack does have holes for them should you choose to attach it that way. We have two bikes on it and there's no problem with the weight. If you bump it the bikes will swivel a bit so there is a little give in it. The one piece of advice that I could give is to make sure that you are hitting a beam in the ceiling before you screw it in tightly. We almost made a hole in the ceiling before we checked. No problems with delivery and the rack itself is well made and looks good. Installation was also easy - one screw in a stud. About Allen Bike Racks In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Gear Up Grand Stand Single Bike Floor Stand ReviewSimply put, I don't feel comfortable parking my road bike on this. I purchased this GrandStand to park my road bike properly in the garage rather than lean it against the wall. But after using it a couple of times I noticed the stand holds the bike in vertical position by the spokes. There is just too much lateral pressure on the spokes especially that the bike tends to go slightly to one side or the other and you can see the spokes temporarily bending by the weight of the bike. There is another thing that I've noticed, depending on the bike derailleur and what gear it's in, when parking the bike with the rear tire, the stand might get between the derailleur and the spokes, pushing the derailleur away from the tire. This might potentially harm the derailleur.
Not wanting to feel that I've wasted my purchased, I tried to use it with my cheap mountain bike, but quickly realized the heavy mountain bike would put even more pressure on the spokes than the road bike.Gear Up Grand Stand Single Bike Floor Stand Overview

Racor Pro PLB-2R Two-Bike Gravity Freestanding Bike Stand ReviewI've been wanting a bike rack like this for years. I've tried products that seemed similar, and they just didn't work for me. This one's exactly what I was looking for.
APPEARANCE
The rack arrived with no scratches. This was a surprise, given that two of the sections that make up the vertical post were loose in the manufacturer's box, and the box was a bit battered.
The rack itself looks great in my garage.
STABILITY
When positioned against (or near) a wall, the rack sways mildly when a bike is removed or replaced. The base is big enough and the overall design is such that removing the bottom bike (gently) doesn't seem to cause the whole thing to fall over--as long as the wall is there for backup. The manufacturer recommends anchoring the rack to the wall and includes hardware for this purpose.
ASSEMBLY
The central post is delivered in three sections: The base is the curved "T" that you can see in the picture on the Amazon site. The other two sections form the vertical tube.
These main sections fit very tightly together. As far as I'm concerned, this makes the whole thing more internally stable. To assemble the central post, I relied on a many squirts from my trusty can of WD-40, some wiggling, gravity, and patience. Without all that, I would've been stuck (and the sections would've been too).
The four arms that hold the two bikes attach into slots on either side of the vertical tube. I used a small block of wood to knock the arms in and out of the slots (I don't have a mallet, and it seemed like a hammer would dent/scratch the finish). Each bike is held by resting the top tube in cradles (at the end of each arm). The cradles easily rotate as needed to adapt to the angle of the top tube. Nice touch.
It definitely took some effort to put this rack together. However, I'm pleased with the results so far. It really frees up space! Taking it apart will be an interesting challenge some day.
Is it worth the price? Well... Even with the Amazon price, it seems a bit more expensive than other garage-quality bike racks. However, over the years I've spent more in total on other racks that didn't work out for me at all. Delta Cycle Rothko Rolling Bike Stand ReviewThe stand assembles in around 10-15 minutes, depending on if you know which pre-drilled holes to use or not. The build quality is reasonable, but the bolts for the casters don't all fit screw in evenly. This doesn't affect the functionality, but seems like something that shouldn't be an issue w/ today's manufacturing technologies.
The casters are great, allowing some movement of the bike and stand without removing the bike.
The only areas of improvement are maybe some better design or feature that further prevents the wheel from tipping/leaning in either direction. Preferably a simple machining or stamping solution as part of the regular manufacturing process that doesn't increase the price would be best.
Compactness is good, too. I have 6 bikes in the garage, and they all store neatly next to each other.

Allen Industrial Grade 12-Bike Parking Rack ReviewI recently bought, and love, this rack. I was concerned about related reviews on similar Allen racks, which arrived in damaged packaging and often missing the necessary assembly hardware. The rack was of such superior quality, I ordered it despite my concern. It came overnight delivery for $3.99 shipping through Amazon Prime as promised. As feared, the hardware was missing. I emailed the manufacturer ([...]) directly. They responded immediately and sent me the full kit of missing hardware and assembly instructions right away. The rack is exactly what I wanted, and I couldn't be happier. My suggestion to Allen, is to tie wrap the assembly hardware package to the rack. The box was destroyed by the shipper (heavy, hard item, so hard to avoid). All other rack pieces were securely tie wrapped together so arrived safely despite the damaged box.
If I had a need for another rack, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Allen. Their service was superb!

Allen Industrial Grade 4-Bike Parking Rack ReviewFirst of all, Amazon.com service was teriible with both packages arriving ripped, in poor condition, and the first with a used and incomplete rack which I returned.
The rack is solidly built, but doesn't fit four bikes comfortably as advertised due to the handle bars. It fits two just fine, but since it is only one sided (a feature I needed) the other two can't be used for the other side. There are numerous web sites for bike storage which have better models. I mistakingly chose amazon.com assuming better service, quality and value.

Outback Mighty Mite 6-Bike Parking Rack ReviewThis is a nice bike rack, we use it inside our garage, so the kids bikes are standing up and organized. Only two issues: on two of our bikes (kids BMX) the front tire is too big to fit between the bars, so we have to "back it in" and park it with the back tire. The other issue is that 6 bikes really don't fit. I found that only 4 bikes fit comfortably, two on each side of the rack at the ends. If you try to put one in the middle it is almost impossible.
Overall, I really like the bike rack, it's very easy to assemble and light weight.

Swagman 3 Bike Stand ReviewI have several kids, and their bikes were always laying around where they shouldn't be before I bought this stand.
This stand is very lightweight, but is of good quality and holds all sizes of bike just fine. Great value for the price. The only downside is that the stand tends to move a bit when the bike is pushed into it.
