Runways & Racers: Sports Car Races held on Military Airfields in America 1952-1954 ReviewCompanion vol. to author's "Northeast American Sports Car Races 1950-1959." Had it not been for the "marriage of convenience" between the Strategic Air Command and the Sports Car Club of America that is the topic of this book, sports car racing in the US would have taken a different path.O'Neil summarizes the role of the Automobile Racing Club of America and also the role of racing in the American postwar psyche. As in his other books, he gathered primary sources (newspapers, archives) for race results and reconciled conflicting data. Each year is summarized in multi-page statistical reviews, one for races on SAC airfields and one for races on other bases. The vast majority of the period pictures are b/w and many are previously unpublished. Appended are 1953 and 1954 SCCA championship standings.
Good explanation of what got the SAC involved in hosting auto races in the first place and the political pressures that ended the program.
