Hawaii Scandal Review"Hawaii Scandal" is a very intriguing book, one that works on many levels. It is at once a mystery and a courtroom drama, but also a tale of innocence lost. The story is set in the decade prior to the Pearl Harbor bombing, undoubtedly the single most important event in the history of the islands, and the act which propelled the United States into World War II, and ultimately towards becoming an enormous global superpower.
Populated with such luminaries as legendary trial lawyer Clarence Darrow, the book begins with the alleged rape of the wife of a U.S. Navy Lieutenant by a group of local island boys. The reaction of both the Hawaiian governor as well as the Navy officials gives insight into the deepening distrust and alienation between the Americans and the Hawaiian people. The events spiral into murder, and the subsequent criminal trials offer fascinating insight into the tenuous relationship between the island people and the American government.
This is a true story and one gets the impression that Cobey Black has done the painstaking research needed to provide an accurate detailing of the events. But the author tells the story in the form of a novel, which allows the reader to gain insight into the characters and absorb the texture of their plight. And the metaphors of a woman's dignity taken from her can be applied to the heavy handed manner in which the Americans took over Hawaii and used her for their own purposes. The woman and her family are forever changed, and shortly thereafter, the Hawaiian islands would be forever changed as well.
Next to James Michener's magnificent story, "Hawaii Scandal" is probably the next most insightful book about how the islands became what they are today. The book is well written, well researched, and tells a tale which many of us are unaware. But what makes this an especially worthwhile and satisfying read is the author's ability to take the story to another level, one that leaves the reader with an understanding of what Hawaii became, and the price that was ultimately paid.

A Crime in the Neighborhood ReviewAs another author, I would highly recommend Suzanne Berne's novel under any circumstances. A Crime in the Neighborhood is subtle, stylish, and memorable, without any self-conscious literary histrionics. I read it two years ago and still remember scenes and lines of dialogue vividly.
The fact that I knew Berne in college may have influenced me to pick up the book in the first place, but had nothing to do with keeping it in my hands. This is a page-turner for people who actually know how to read.
Which is why I'd also like to respond to some of the more suspiciously negative comments posted here. It seems perfectly obvious that several of these reviews have been written by the same person using different addresses. The dead give-away is that the word "sleeper" is misused over and over to denote boredom rather than to indicate an unexpected pleasure, as is the common usage. Whoever is doing this probably spends most of his or her time alone in a small dark room.

Our Time on the River ReviewAfter David, a nineteen-year-old from Cooperstown, New York, enlists in the military during the Vietnam War, he and his fourteen-year-old brother, Steven, are sent to canoe down the Susquehanna River, where they must rely on each other to survive. When they first set out on the river, the two brothers don't get along well, but as they encounter problems, they start to look out for one another. As they canoe down the river, they frequently make stops either to camp for the night or to purchase food in the cities they come across. One night, raccoons eat all of their food. Another night, they don't go to sleep for fear that a stranger would attack them. On one occasion, they take shelter from a storm, but their supplies and extra clothes get wet. Fortunately, they find a Laundromat in the next city. They experience many new things and, in one city, even get paid to help set up a carnival. In another city, Steven gets a gash down his chest while playing around in a junkyard and they must get to a doctor for a tetanus shot. Then, in one of the last cities they stop at, they upset some men in a bar, who then chase them away. They barely escape and are hit by rocks as they paddle away. Then, after their canoe capsizes and they almost drown, they call their dad to come and take them home. Later, David is sent to Vietnam, but returns home a while later, after a missile hit the building he was in and caused his eardrums to burst. Our Time on the River is a great adventure that any reader would enjoy.
This story is filled with suspense. One night, David and Steven find that there is someone in the woods near their camp. They take turns being lookout all night because they were afraid the stranger would attack them. In one town they upset some men at a bar and are chased back to the river. They get away just in time, but still are pummeled with rocks as they leave. Later, strong current makes it impossible to steer the canoe and they hit a tree stump, capsizing. David gets stuck on the root of a tree and Steven must scramble to save him from drowning.
This story has interesting characters. David is a tough-guy and enlists in the military even though the Vietnam War is being fought. His younger brother, Steven, is a shy fourteen-year-old and the two don't get along very well until after their adventures on the river. Their mom is always worried about them, telling them to be careful, but their dad is always encouraging them to have fun. He is the one who sends them on their adventure.
The relationship between the two brothers seemed very realistic. At first, they don't get along at all and neither one wants to canoe with the other. Their first night, they start to play around and David ends up chasing Steven, but when he catches him, he holds him underwater almost drowning him and they end up mad at each other. Later they start to look out for each other. When Steven gets cut at the junkyard in one city, David makes sure they find a doctor and get him a tetanus shot. Then, when the canoe capsizes in strong currents, David is stuck underwater on a tree's roots and Steven jumps back into the river to save him.
Our Time on the River is a great adventure story. It is filled with suspense and is very realistic. The characters are normal people, but still are interesting to read about. It is a captivating story that any reader would love from beginning to end.

Cold Case ReviewTaking place in Santa Fe, this story takes you traveling through all different neighborhoods and also explores the kitchen. Great detail is shown in these two areas which truly shows that the author knows what she is talking about. The mystery is hard to decipher alone, and it is surprising and thrilling towards the end. Even though the book is told from a boys point of view, if you are an adult you will still thoroughly enjoy it. You will start to remember what it was like to be child: always curious and looking for excitement.Cold Case Overview

Down from Cascom Mountain: A Novel ReviewAnn Joslin Williams sets her debut novel (she has a collection of linked stories, The Woman in the Woods) in the rugged mountains near fictional Leah, New Hampshire, a town created by her father, Thomas Williams. Down from Cascom Mountain is mostly the story of Mary, who grew up on the mountain with a famous writer father, and has now returned.
Although the story starts with Mary, once the novel falls into its own patterns, Mary shares the narration with Callie, a remarkable sixteen-year-old working on the mountain this summer; and Tobin, a gifted but troubled teenager who grew up on the mountain. It's a refreshingly real motley crew of characters, and I enjoyed getting to know all of those who spent the summer on Cascom Mountain.
Williams captures the mountains of New Hampshire in a lyrical way that will resonate with readers familiar with New England as well as those who aren't. It's a lushly written novel full of description of the place as well as its people. It's emotionally raw, and despite how much I was enjoying it, there were a few times (in the two days it took me to read it) I had to stop and let the characters rest for a moment. Still, while I was reading this novel, the characters were always in my thoughts.
As much as I enjoyed the experience of reading this novel, the end result didn't quite come together for me emotionally. Rather, the storylines came together a little bit too much. With novels that feel as real as this one did, I wish the ending weren't quite as neat. It's an incredibly personal, small quibble, but it kept this novel from being a 5-star read. Still, I will eagerly await the next novel from Ann Joslin Williams and highly recommend this one.

Shadow of Death ReviewAfter reading the reviews by other reviewers, I feel as though I must have read a different book.
The story takes place in 1967-1971, but it has more of a sense of the 90s than the 60s or 70s. The author actually uses the term "politically correct," despite it was a time long before the term was in vogue. In fact, this is the most politically correct novel I've ever read. If somebody had instructed the author to write a story with every conceivable politically correct example possible, well she did that, and the result is that the characters are stereotyped, from the spoiled wife to the misunderstood husband.
The book is also "sloppy" in details, e.g., a crime takes place on Wednesday night and then we go to Thursday but then it's suddenly the weekend. What happened on Friday? A husband hums "happy birthday" to himself, but we don't find out it had been his birthday until the following week. The protagonist has her car parked in the parking lot but wonders if she should call her husband at home to come to pick her up. We get a "clue" about a "yellow-hair[ed]" woman who turns out to be a young intern but we don't even know that until several chapters later. These kind of sloppy mistakes in the details of a story ruin a book for me.
Another huge disappointment for me was that Michael Palmer, an author whose work I have enjoyed and admired, endorsed this book, which is what compelled me to take a chance on Patricia Gussin. Now I remember why I usually hesitate to try new authors without a firm recommendation from a fellow reader.Shadow of Death Overview

Cars for Comrades: The Life of the Soviet Automobile ReviewI have learned directly from this man at Michigan State University and was fortunate enough to have read advanced sections of this book prior to its release. This is an outstanding piece of history which discusses a part of Soviet society that is most often glossed over, if not completely ignored, in most Soviet history courses.
