Adrenaline ReviewAdrenaline is a great fast paced novel, which is pretty much non stop action from the first to the last page. The only downside is that is clearly the start of a series, by this I mean that even though the majority of the issues in the novel are resolved by the end, a few things aren't. It's still enjoyable as standalone read but you're sort of hooked to now wait in anticipation for the next novel in the series to see those things resolved.
This novel is a little less Harlan Coben style, than Panic and some of his other independent stand alone storyline novels, more like a David Morrell far fetched well trained military/secret agent operative main character than an everyday guy type through the eyes read. It's not realistic (although it is considerably more so than some of Abbott's other work) but that doesn't mean it's not just plain fun.
Basic plot of Adrenaline is a former in the field secret agent type, Sam Capra has settled down to a life of briefing his organisation (known as The Company) on threats to the Western world. He's got a heavily pregnant wife named Lucy whose only days away from giving birth and the biggest risks he now takes is his morning runs through British council estates where he enjoys using the rooves, railings and other parts of those estates as an obstacle course. However during a morning presentation he receives a call on his mobile, his wife is on the other end and tells him he must come down and meet her on the street right now. Since she's heavily pregnant he can get away with this, but as he hits the street his building explodes. He sees his wife being held captive in a car, a man with a scarred face beside her fleeing from the scene. No one believes she has been kidnapped, and it's not long before normal police interviewing is replaced by a needle and Sam awakens in a Polish prison where he is tortured and questioned in the hopes he will confess the details and give up the information on the whereabouts of those responsible. The Company tell him that he either must have known with all his training that his wife was a traitor or he is completely useless as an agent because the signs are always obvious. Sam doesn't want to believe the answer is either of those things and is determined to do whatever it takes to find his wife and would be born now child and to do that he'll have to get to the bottom of the bombing as well.Adrenaline Overview

The Devil All the Time ReviewTHE DEVIL ALL THE TIME
Fasten your seat belt, stop the world, you will want to get off and read this book in one sitting, then you'll be sorry when you are finished. Donald Ray Pollock's writing slams into your mind and soul and will not let you go. Ever.
This book is intense, frightening, wonderful, poignant, alarming, and magnificent. The characters you will meet -- and I wouldn't want to meet many of them in a dark alley -- are bizarre, menacing, church-going, God-fearing, alarming, and sometimes loving folk. The people in this book are so fleshed-out and real and the types of human beings you pray you will never actually have the pleasure of meeting.
The setting is in West Virginia and Ohio, the backroads of rural America. Folks are poor and down-trodden, homes are ramshackle and filthy. We meet Willard Russell who has served his time in the South Pacific and can't get over the brutality of war. The war leaves him wounded in his mind but he hopes to put all of that behind him when he meets and falls in love with the beautiful Charlotte. Willard and Charlotte have a son, Arvin Eugene. We also meet Carl and Sandy Henderson, married psychopaths who have a terrifying and disturbing hobby. Two other stand-out characters are a preacher, Roy, and his wheelchair bound partner, Theodore; both are on the lamb.
All of these lives become jumbled and tangled together, making for one heck of a story. The plot is fast paced and I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough. Pollock's descriptions of the characters were so vivid and dynamic you can almost see their greased back hair, smell their cheap perfume, and taste the whiskey and/or coffee they are chugging down.
The entire time I was reading and loving this book, I couldn't stop feeling totally appalled and wondering how I could LOVE such a story-line -- one filled with death, depravations, strange, odd, totally weird people. A book that made me look at people out in public in a totally new and different and not good way. A book that had me rechecking the locks on my doors. A book I will recommend to others and a book I will never forget. Pollock's extreme talent in writing is the reason why I could absolutely love and highly recommend such a disturbing and wildly wonderful book. Pollock had me sitting on the edge of my seat the entire time, being shocked and reshocked over and over again. The story line twists and turns, taking you places you never dreamed of, never once was I correct when I thought I had everything all figured out -- not once. Dang.
Pollock has one previous book, KNOCKEMSTIFF. Don't miss that one either. This man is talented and here's hoping he graces us with more of his fantastic work.
Thanks --
Pam

Misery Bay: An Alex McKnight Novel (Alex Mcknight Mystery) ReviewThe feeling of ease and comfort with his main character are immediate in this newest Steve Hamilton story featuring his Numero Uno detective, Alex McKnight. The last McKnight story was six years ago. This has been one of my favorite series over the years and I was truly waiting for this latest installment. This one did not disappoint.
The story starts with an eerie preface that alludes to the upcoming events and then immediately a well done background of the characters and past events is done by Hamilton - and it was done just right - so as not to leave out readers that had not been fortunate enough to have found this series years ago. In the previous five stories, Hamilton takes one of the main characters and places them in danger with Alex on the trail. In this one, Chief Maven and McKnight, Maven's arch enemy in the Paradise area, are placed together as they attempt to unravel the madman with which they are entangled.
The writing is crisp, the dialogue is genuine and humor dry and without forced effort. The story is complex and moves at a good pace. The rhythm is just right between the characters and the storyline. There is very little not to like in this novel. If I had to pick something it would be the fact that Alex could remain ahead of the FBI on the trial of the bad guys. However, that said, the story never felt forced or fake.
There is plenty to like in this installment, and it can play very well without going back into the series. There are several lines in the story about past incidents and they will make you want to start at the beginning of this series. I would rate this as the best of the six books by Hamilton that I have read. Definitely one for the pile of reading material, especially if this is your genre.
