Planning and Design of Airports, 4/e ReviewThe best of its kind for the technical detail. We have most of the other airport and terminal design books on the bookshelf (up to 2005 publication date), but every time we come back to using Horonjeff for the serious design of new airports and extensions. It is also good for layout design by the engineer for terminals - although the architects may want more books. But there is another book - the 2003 book titled Airport Systems - Planning, Design and Management by Richard de Neufville and Amedeo Odoni - that will become the definitive text on airport design for the first part of the 21st century. So you'll need both, especially if you have to deal with the complexity of systems and stakeholders that are part of medium to large size airports.
Horonjeff has got the full set of data tables and charts to enable you to design anything. I seldom need to use the ICAO Manuals on a daily basis, and only use them for cross checking an obscure point. The upgrade from the 3rd edition to the 4th edition was a big one - it metricated much of the book, added in the latest aircraft (late model 737, 767s and ER, and the 777-200), and generally updated the book. Examples of new information are some good stuff on runway/taxiway capacity, and some additions to ACN/PCN. Worth spending the money to update. Essential to buy if starting from scratch. The best textbook for a technical course on Airport Engineering. Needs Airport Systems to have a rounded and modern view of masterplanning (and the successor to masterplanning - dynamic systems planning).Planning and Design of Airports, 4/e Overview

I have a copy of the 1980s version of Rutes and Penner--this is a totally new edition, all new photography, etc.--and consider it the 'Bible' for hotel design. But the new edition is twice as big and full of current examples and information. It has 32 pages of gorgeous color photos of great hotels and resorts from around the world. The text is in three main sections: Hotel Types (downtown, resorts, conference centers, luxury hotels, casino hotels, etc.); Design Guide (planning and design information for all areas of the hotel); and Development Guide (feasibility, programming, future trends). In addition, there are lots of appendices and sidebars from such people as Ian Schrager, I.M. Pei, Robert Stern, and John Portman. I've looked at other hotel design books in the stores and there isn't anything that is so complete or current. There are other books on boutique hotels, with lots of pictures, but nothing with this global coverage of all types of lodging properties. With well over 400 pages, this book will be the new Bible for hotel design. The Professional Practice of Architectural Working Drawings ReviewI bought this book when my younger brother started taking CAD classes to come work with me. I have found it to be an excellent resource, for the beginning draftsman, for putting together a set of plans. For the intermediate and advanced draftsman it is a valuable "checklist" book. The book only has one small section on CAD, but that is not the idea of the book.
This book will show you what is needed to be in a good set of plans. It has many examples of drawings and details and with good explanations for them. The explanations given also help you to understand what is being shown, but also why it is being shown. Having been in construction for over 20 years before I started drafting, I can say that the examples given are the types of drawings I wish came out to my jobs. You will be able to understand what information needs to be in your drawings, how to graphically show it. You will also be able to move around in the book and go to examples for whichever phase you are working on in your drawings and compare what you have done with what is given in the book.

No matter what level of draftsman you are, I would recommend this book. It will be an invaluable resource for you for years to come.The Professional Practice of Architectural Working Drawings Overview
