Nicolae: The Rise of Antichrist (Left Behind, Book 3) ReviewThis book in the Left Behind series is called Nicolae but Nicolae is harldy even in this book. Again, this entry in the series focuses almost entirely on the private lives of Rayford, Buck and friends.
When I heard about this series I had really hoped for insight into Revelation and the end times. Instead we're given endless detail about the Trib Force members and only the most elementary presentation of prophetic events.
Like many readers, I have found The Christ Clone Trilogy far more satisfying to my desire to understand the Tribulation. Instead of Left Behind's rigid repetition of scriptural description with no real-world explanation of what it means or how it could occur, The Christ Clone Trilogy gives plausible scenarios based in real science and politics, as well as staying true to scripture.
And as far as believable Antichrists, Nicolae Carpathia is a cardboard puppet compared to Christopher Goodman.Nicolae: The Rise of Antichrist (Left Behind, Book 3) Overview

Vicious Cycle: An Intervention Novel ReviewSince I first started reading Christian fiction, Terri Blackstock has always been one of my favorite authors. I love the intensity in her novels, which causes me to furiously turn the pages. She has begun a new series about the struggles of drug addiction, and she doesn't tone down that intensity one bit.
Vicious Cycle is a novel about a young girl, Jordan, who is caught up in a web of drug addiction. Not only is she an addict, but her mother and half-brother are as well. In the very first chapter, she is pregnant with a child and forced to have the baby in her own bed because her mother will not take her to the hospital. Jordan does not understand that at first, but as the pieces fall into place throughout the book, Jordan's realizes she has a mother who does not care about anyone but herself.
Lance (featured in book one, Intervention) becomes friends with Jordan through school. Because his sister is a recovering drug addict, he recognizes pretty quickly that Jordan is on the road to a bad life, not only for herself, but for the baby that she's carrying. He convinces her to start treatment at a local rehab center, New Day. Lance visits every weekend to see his sister while she's recovering, and seeing Jordan is an added bonus. When Jordan voluntarily leaves New Day so close to her delivery date, he knows Jordan will return to her drug-infested home. He takes it upon himself to drive over to her house to check on her, not realizing that he's about to be in the biggest trouble of his life.
Leave it to Terri Blackstock to create a novel that sucked me in from page one!! Not only did I get a glimpse of the world of meth, I also got a small glimpse into the world of baby trafficking, and neither one was a pretty picture. This book was so realistic, possibly more so than the book before it, Intervention. I can't wait to see what's in store for Barbara, Kent, Emily, and Lance with the remainder of the books in this series. Highly Recommended!!Vicious Cycle: An Intervention Novel Overview

Savage Rage: A Mystery (The Rage Series) ReviewSavage Rage is Brent Pilkey's second book based on the character Jack Warren, a tough Toronto cop with an attitude, working the mean streets of 51 Division. Pilkey himself a veteran Toronto officer has lived these same streets, and brings his 22 years of experience to the pages of this intense new series. I read Pilkey's debut novel, Lethal Rage, and really enjoyed the Toronto setting. There was actually some controversy within the police department when his first book was going to press. Because Pilkey is still actively working as a police officer there was an effort by his higher-ups to try and block publication, but eventually they relented. Good thing too because it's a great read.
In this second book, Warren is tracking a violent criminal mastermind who stays one step ahead of the police hot on his tail. Savage Rage is a compelling, well crafted thriller. At times it does feel less like fiction and reads somewhat like a memoir but regardless, Savage Rage will keep you turning the pages long after you should have shut out the lights and gone to sleep. Highly recommended.Savage Rage: A Mystery (The Rage Series) Overview

Fire of Heaven Trilogy ReviewI can safely say that this is one of the top three of any Christian series that I have ever read. After thinking about what I was to write here, I realized that saying anything about these books would probally ruin one or more of the many climaxes throughout all three of these books (yes! I did say one **OR MORE** --does a little jig), which I would feel horribly guilty about. The only thing that made me question where the author of this book was coming from was that the books really didn't flow like a series should--but I didn't find this so horrible that I should give it one less star. One word of advice:
Don't read ANY of these books unless you have time to read all of them, because you *will* become hooked!Fire of Heaven Trilogy Overview

Taken (Left Behind: The Young Trib Force) ReviewAt no doubt, this will definitely give kids a great point of view towards the rapture through the eyes of four teenagers who are experiencing it themselves. If your kid has questions, and confusions about the Rapture, the Left Behind Kids version is sure to have them understanding it, and also giving them a good story to think about for the near future, and of course, entertainment.
Judd, Vicki, Lionel and Ryan think they know it all. None of them believe the gospel of Jesus Christ, and none believe in God. With Judd a running away from his parents, Vicki rebelling against her parents conversion, Lionel lying about being a Christian, and Ryan skeptisysing about his friends faith, the four will come together to realize there was more to life, and God that was there all the time, they just wouldn't take the time to believe it.
I recieved the first book (which is the first four books in all) for my birthday, and was a little skeptical about them at first. A few months before I had started to read the adult Left Behind books, but to no avail for the fact that they were too old for me (I was twelve at the time). After re-discovering them a month later, I was hooked on them. Not only were they entertaining, but they gave an easy understanding towards the Rapture for kids.
Even if adults have trouble understanding the Rapture and the end times, it'll provide an easy understanding, and have them (as I did) rexamine their faith through these books.
An instant five stars. And remember, if you refuse to believe the Rapture, just make sure you have plenty of places to go afterwards, because there will be no place to hide.Taken (Left Behind: The Young Trib Force) Overview

Promise Me ReviewI have been a RPE fan for more years than I care to share... and this was just a huge let down! The story was just weird and creepy for me. The first half had me hook line and sinker (as all of his books do) but the second half just left a really bad taste in my mouth.Promise Me Overview

Hold On Tight/Closer Than Ever/Take My Hand (The Sierra Jensen Series 10-12) (Sierra Jensen Collection, Volume 4) ReviewThis collection includes the first three books in the Sierra Jensen series written by Robin Jones Gunn.
Only You, Sierra introduces sixteen-year-old Sierra. Flying home from a mission trip in the UK, Sierra has met several new friends, including Katie and Christy, who readers of Robin's Christy Miller series will recognize. Normally outgoing and adventurous, Sierra is surprised to feel anxiety about her family's move to Portland, Oregon during the time she was away. A new home, new school, and potential new love interest challenge Sierra to reevaluate beliefs about herself that she has long taken for granted.
In Your Dreams finds Sierra watching over Granna Mae for a few days while her family is out of town. While it's difficult for Sierra to see her Granna's memory come and go, what seems to be a simple responsibility becomes more than Sierra bargains for when Granna Mae receives a call saying she needs immediate surgery. Meanwhile, Sierra tries to find a part-time job and wonders why, when she was the most popular girl at her old school, she is having such a difficult time making new friends in Portland.
Don't You Wish takes Sierra and her sister Tawni to spend Easter break at the beach with Christy, Katie, and their friends. When Tawni hits it off immediately with Jeremy, and even Katie pairs off with Antonio, an Italian exchange student, Sierra struggles with being jealous and feeling left out. She wants a boyfriend too. She tries to have fun and even learns to surf. But when Sierra witnesses Christy and Todd, to her the perfect couple, going through a difficult time in their relationship, she realizes everyone has struggles in their life. And she learns, as 1 Tim 6:6 states, that godliness with contentment is the greatest gain.
"Have you ever felt as if you were caught between two lives? The one you're living, and the one you wish you were living?" Sierra asks Christy.
Armchair Interviews says: Readers of all ages will understand Sierra's feelings and be ministered to by the timeless truths God reveals to her throughout this collection.Hold On Tight/Closer Than Ever/Take My Hand (The Sierra Jensen Series 10-12) (Sierra Jensen Collection, Volume 4) Overview

In This Mountain (The Mitford Years, Book 7) ReviewI was so sad to finish this book! What a delight: such an optimistic and hopeful view of life. I almost turned to the first page and started reading it over!
Father Tim and Cynthia have moved back to Mitford after their stint on Whitecap. They are happy to be back, but Fr. Tim is dissatisfied with retired life. He doesn't know what to do with himself. He wrestles with his faith and with the direction his life is turning. Cynthia has received major accolades for her children's books. The Man In The Attic is back in Mitford, Dooley is lovesick, and the "Turkey Club" is meeting at The Grill as always.
With a few surprises along the way and an ending that will leave you gasping, Jan Karon delivers the most notable Mitford story yet! All the characters we have come to love are still in Mitford, and we love them even more.In This Mountain (The Mitford Years, Book 7) Overview

O Little Town: A Novel ReviewIf you like the music of The Statler Brothers or the fiction of Debbie Macomber, you'll be excited that with O LITTLE TOWN, Statler Brother Don Reid has made his first foray into fiction. The Grammy Award-winning songwriter sets his seasonal tale in the fictional town of Mt. Jefferson (modeled after his hometown of Staunton, Virginia).
It's just before Christmas in 1958; Elvis is on the radio, Eisenhower is in the White House and the pastor's 15-year-old daughter is shoplifting at Macalbee's Five and Dime. Other Mt. Jefferson families have their own set of troubles. The arresting officer Buddy Briggs has just found out that his teenage daughter is pregnant --- and the news is going to come as a bombshell to Dr. Campbell Sterrett, whose son is the father. Dr. Sterrett, or "Camp" as he's known, is also dealing with his own aging father-in-law, Walter, who wants to leave Lenity General Hospital in the midst of a bout with the flu to be with family for Christmas. In other scenes, the preacher's wife Dove is tired of being married to a minister and, by vocation, being married to his congregation and their needs, and keeps the embers glowing with her love interest from the past.
There's a lot to keep track of here between the characters and their doings, and the time change between the late 1950s and Walter's reminiscences about Christmas of 1904. Reid takes his inspiration for one of the novel's 1904 subplots from a true story. In the author interview from the afterword, he tells readers that a traveling circus troupe performer, Eva Clark, was murdered in his hometown around the turn of the century. Each year to the present day, an unknown person leaves flowers on her grave. In the book, Eva becomes Adrienne Knoles, an actress performing a holiday play with her husband, Nicholas. Walter tells her story through the eyes of himself as a 16-year-old stage boy at the Crown theater.
Reid incorporates many nice details of the time period, including the soap "As the World Turns" (the most watched daytime drama of 1958) and "White Christmas" sung by The Drifters. A younger generation of readers may miss some of the World War II references that are not explained ("Anzio was a card game compared to this"). The avalanche of expected problems may feel like too many and too fictionally familiar to readers (the small town with lots of secrets simmering just under the surface, the unwed pregnant daughter, the pessimistic medical diagnosis, the affair, the young rebellious minister's daughter), but Reid keeps everything hanging together and never lets anything become more gloomy than a gentle angst. He tends to tell rather than show ("Dove and Amanda needed each other this afternoon. They were confidants who knew what they said would not go beyond the edges of the small table they were leaning into as they exchanged problems and solutions.").
But the very familiarity of the small town troubles may endear the characters to readers: the marital difficulties, frustrations of raising children and coping with an aging parent. Reid incorporates some good themes of forgiveness and mercy as his flawed characters seek change.
All problems are neatly resolved in the end (with an epilogue tidying up any other loose threads), which is in keeping with the book's message of holiday inspiration and cheer. Statler Brothers fans and those who like a gentle read will enjoy Reid's foray into fiction.
