Praying for My Life ReviewIt happens to everyone--unexpected experiences in life. It seems like Marion Bond West had almost more than her share of difficulties. When the experiences of life seemed almost too much to bear, she turned to prayer and found unusual strength and peace.
The theme of this book uses, Habakkuk 3:17-19--some little known verses from a minor prophet in the Old Testament. The world crumbled around Habakkuk as well yet he chose to follow the God of his salvation. It's a timeless choice which Marion Bond West makes in this book--and each reader can make as they reflect on these experiences.
Here's a book loaded with hope and encouragement for the most challenging of life's experiences. I recommend it.

The Christmas Secret ReviewOne of my favorite things to do during the holiday season is to curl up with a wonderful, touching and inspiring book. Donna VanLiere has become such a tradition for me, or rather her books have. Each year I eagerly anticipate her newest release, which I gobble up within a couple of days and then I am left downtrodden because I know I have to wait another year for another treasure by her.
Each of Ms. VanLiere's stories are filled with the greatest of struggles, perseverance, warmth, the greatest of goodness and bonds of selfless friendship. Each and every story has yet to fail to warm my heart and put a smile to my face at the acts of kindness and generosity of the characters.
The Christmas Secret is the story of a young single mother, Christine, who is constantly struggling to make money to feed, clothe and take care of her beloved young children. To make matters worse, her ex-husband is a vengeful man who tries, at every corner, to make Christine's life more stressful and worrisome with threats of taking the kids away from her.
This is a story of one young mother's deep and unyielding love for her children. A mother who would do anything to care for them. Christine's big break seems to come when she is hired by Betty who is the owner of a bakery/restaurant. It is here that Christine meets many new friends and learns the true meaning of faith, bonding and what it is like to belong. Not to mention this is also the place she comes in contact with an obnoxious and overbearing, but very handsome man, who she feels a strange sort of connection with.
The Christmas Secret is full of delightful twists and turns and a few surprises along the way. I have to say that I adored all of the characters and felt a very special adoration for Gloria, one of the most generous and caring woman you will ever meet. Throughout the entire story, I was brought to tears, laughter, warmth and every motion in-between. Ms. VanLiere has such a mind-blowing talent to bring her readers into the story, make them care deeply for the characters and make the characters and actions remain with the reader long after the final word is read.
I actually discovered Donna VanLiere a few years ago and have felt truly blessed by her work ever since. As I had stated previously, hers is one of the new releases that I eagerly anticipate each year and I have yet to be disappointed. For me, the holiday season isn't off to an official start until I have read a novel by this wonderful author.
I highly recommend The Christmas Secret for anyone looking for an excellent and engrossing story. A story that will remain with you for a very long time and turn you into a huge fan of Ms. VanLiere.

Before I Go: A Novel ReviewAn excellent debut from Riley Weston, telling the story of a mother and daughter brought together by an Olympic ice-skating dream. A sports themed novel with a difference, the story revolves around the two extremely strong female characters, mother and daughter, coach and protégé, both strong willed and ambitious. Annie once had an Olympic dream of her own, but now lives to see her daughter Madison on the podium with the five rings.
Driving both herself and Madison relentlessly, Annie schedules multiple practice sessions every day at the local rink, beginning before daybreak and again into the night. Between her working hours as a nurse and Madison's school curriculum, the stress is telling on them both, but neither even considers giving up. Madison's success is all that matters, and even though this means that Annie's relationship with her husband is strained and the finances of the family are in bad shape, she will stop at nothing to realize their mutual dream.
Because of this schedule, Madison has no time for friends or extra-curricular activities, but she does have one person other than her parents whom she can count on, and that's Jack, her childhood friend and confidante. Things finally start coming together when Madison wins the qualifying tournament for the Olympics, but the celebration is cut short when unforeseen circumstances cause everything to unravel.
Family ties and friendships are sorely tested as Madison faces life without skating, and Annie and Jack bend over backwards to accommodate her every wish, only to be rebuffed and closed out as Madison retreats into herself. Only when Madison finally understands the extent of her mother's sacrifice and the true nature of Jack's feelings for her does she finally realize how lucky she really is.
This tear jerker covers life, love and loss, and especially the special bond that exists between mother and daughter.

Life Between the Keys: The (Mis)Adventures Of The 5 Browns Review"Life Between the Keys" is the story of The 5 Browns - the Juilliard-trained family of piano virtuosos who have taken the classical music scene by storm. The book consists of a series of essays, written by each of the five Brown siblings - Ryan, Melody, Gregory, Deondra and Desirae. These essays are filled with anecdotes about their childhood, their piano training at Juilliard, their performance tours and other experiences.
As a pianist myself and a graduate of a university piano performance program, I found their stories of long hours of practicing, auditioning for college, preparing for degree-required recitals and "living" in the practice rooms to really hit home with me. I definitely could identify with many of their experiences, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading these sometimes humorous/sometimes touching reminiscences.
Melody's recollection of long hours in the practice rooms was my favorite:
"...looking back on the room with blue velvet curtains, I see a home...I'd visit with friends and argue with enemies. I'd cry my eyes out, throw music across the room, and bang on the piano. I'd laugh until I couldn't breathe and play until I transcended the room. This was what I found in the practice rooms. Razor blades were the least of my worries. For life was between those keys, nothing else."
A few other things I loved about this book:
-This book illustrates that hard work and dedication really can pay off. I found myself inspired and motivated to practice the piano after reading this book!
-The importance of family is a theme that pervades this book. I was very impressed by how close these siblings are.
-Their passion and love for music is very evident. These siblings are literally changing the face of classical music, making it "cool" and inspiring young people everywhere.
While I would highly recommend this book especially to other pianists and musicians, I am positive that many people, musicians and non-musicians alike, will enjoy this inspiring book.Life Between the Keys: The (Mis)Adventures Of The 5 Browns Overview

Living an Uncommon Life: Essential Lessons from 21 Extraordinary People ReviewI didn't know what to expect from the book or the author.
I saw the subtitle about lessons from 21 extraordinary people and feared it might be some exercise in genuflecting to celebrity. That is a most subversive notion in this day and age of conformity where aspiring to wealth seems the highest goal.
John St. Augustine's name didn't mean much to me either. I'm an east coast guy and though he was a succesful radio talk show host that was mostly in the middle of the country - plus, I'm not much of a talk show guy. I find the radio stuff so jarring and controversial that it leaves me uncomfortable. Would that his show had been on everywhere.
Then I cracked the spine. What a book. It is bold - it respects its readers and doesn't try and sell them on three ways to achieve success or 2.5 ways to live a get thin and achieve a lasting tan - because it challenges readers not to go to the comfortable wings (left or right) but to dig down deeply in their own lives. The book challenges our humanity and confronts us with the reality of our mortality and does with passion and enthusiasm and gusto because John St.Augustine looks at life and shouts, "YES!" It can be a bit intimidating because it is so radical.
At various points I found myself reading and thinking to myself that I could live the kind of rich, full life he writes about here -punctuated with stories of famous (and anonymous) people he has known - and wanting to live that kind of life but realizing that to do so I had to follow his most serious lesson...that living takes work and determination but that it is so worth that work.
I could go on and on in writing but frankly I am more interested in now going back through some of the chapters - like the one in which he talks about learning the power of living in the moment through the late Chicago Bears star Walter Payton - to learn what I have already forgotten.
I've never written an Amazon review before and perhaps I haven't done the best job - my enthusiasm may be getting in the way of my writing - but don't hold that again this uncommon book. It is remarkable and must, must, must be read.Living an Uncommon Life: Essential Lessons from 21 Extraordinary People Overview

Hope's Wish: How One Girl's Dream Made Others Come True ReviewStuart and Shelby Stout have incredible faith in God and this story is proof thereof. It has times of laughter, times of tears, and shows how truly faithful some can be in God to bring you through trying times.
The wish that Hope requested from Make-A-Wish was so incredible that the media in Charlotte, NC picked it up and ran with it! One little red-head with cancer raising $1 million for those less fortunate than her is truly inspirational. And not to mention it was done in less than 2 months!!
The power of Hope's wish still lives on today through the friends and family of Shelby and Stuart. I am blessed that I was able to witness some of this journey with the Stouts.Hope's Wish: How One Girl's Dream Made Others Come True Overview

The Real Stars: In Today's America, Who Are the True Heroes ReviewThe articles in this book span about twenty years and are humorous, encouraging, touching, sad and factual. Especially uplifting are the articles pointing out that our military men and women and their families are the "true heroes" and the "real stars' in America. Not the Hollywood actors and actresses and Mr. Stein includes himself in this category.
Mr. Stein makes some fun of himself, Hollywood executives, and corporate executives although he is clearly not as well off as most of those in Hollywood and also doesn't have a lavish life style. He also helps us make some fun of ourselves as employees, as fans of stars and fans of material things that are clearly not as important as your family, how you live your life and how you serve and think of others.
Mr. Stein writes about his late father, Herbert Stein, and how he and his wife lived modestly in Washington, D.C. and how they taught Ben and his sister good values such as hard work, caring for others, and so on. The articles written in the book just after his father's death are also very poignant as he reflects on the times they had together.
Mr. Stein has great respect and love for the people serving in our military and their families and this is much reflected in the articles. He also has admiration for young children who have gone through much pain and suffering with terminal cancer. These different articles are tender stories of real people told with love and respect.
A very uplifting and moving book. Highly recommended.

Rise and Shine: The Extraordinary Story of One Man's Journey from Near Death to Full Recovery ReviewMore than a book you can't put down, although it is that, Rise and Shine is an unforgettable ride that propels the reader through the roller-coaster adventure of Simon Lewis's recovery, from the deepest coma possible without being dead to his triumph over the naysaying doctors, the impossible door slams of the insurance industry, and the ineffectual healthcare quagmire. After 16 years of persistence, with the loving care of his parents and the shining healers he found among the many medical professionals he consulted, Mr. Lewis emerges with his humor, keen insights and gift of inspiring language intact. The wealth of scientific data he has assembled in very accessible form will help many individuals around the world who will be informed and uplifted by his stunning effort to share his discoveries with a global readership, particularly those who have suffered traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries and believe they have no way out. For me, the most touching passages come near the beginning of the tale, where Mr. Lewis recounts the dream-like snippets that came back to him from his month in the coma. The book is a prodigious effort that has as much poetry and spiritual perception as it has revealing medical truths.Rise and Shine: The Extraordinary Story of One Man's Journey from Near Death to Full Recovery Overview

The Power of Choice : A Guide to Personal and Professional Self Management ReviewThis is an exceptionally lucid exposition of the power of personal choices in each of our lives. It also details the innumerable ways in which we all do everything we can to deny the choices we have in our lives and how the evasion of personal responsibility serves only to psychologically weaken us.
One thing that hasn't been mentioned by any of the previous reviewers is that Ted Willey uses some of the key language and notions of Werner Erhard and the old est movement to forward his ideas. He does so in a way that is highly conversational, rational and communicative, without any of the controversial baggage that made est and its later incarnation, the Landmark Forum, so unpalatable for so many people. For this alone I appreciate Ted Willey's book. Erhard had some great perspectives, learned from his own personal experiences and also from therapists such as Fritz Perls. Unfortunately for Erhard (as well as for Perls), his overall lifestyle was eccentric enough and his packaging of his ideas controversial enough that the message was lost in the sometimes bizarre medium of its expression. Ted Willey's book manages to bypass all of that. His expression of fundamentally sound ideas is framed in a way that is immediately understandable. The average person stands to gain a great deal from reading and applying the concepts presented in The Power of Choice.
In conjunction with The Power of Choice I might recommend John Narciso's book Relating Redefined as well as William Glasser's book Choice Theory. They all complement each other and are most relevent in this time of personal and cultural abdication of responsiblity. The Power of Choice : A Guide to Personal and Professional Self Management Overview

Leadership Rules: How to Become the Leader You Want to Be ReviewShort, concise, and powerful. Widener's use of storytelling to nail down time tested leadership concepts helps the reader remember the impact of following the rules. It's short enough to read over a few hours and worth taking the time to do it. I hadn't heard of Widener before this book. After reading this, I'm interested in taking a look at his two bestsellers.
I recommend "Leadership Rules" because the rules are simple to remember and workable. They are translatable into any field (including family). The thing that really makes this book good is that these rules can be applied instantly. As the reader begins to apply these to their life, they will be a better leader by default. I'm excited to see the impact I have on others as I begin to implement these rules into my life and organizations.

Fear No Evil: A Test of Faith, a Courageous Church, and an Unfailing God ReviewIn a day when many Christian authors seem to constantly chide / encourage their readers to "overcome" or be "victorious" while ignoring the realities of life's difficulties, Pastor Boyd provides a real life scenario and, against all odds, leads the reader to the expectation of hope and 'overcoming' faith in the midst of adversity. Not a spiritual 'self-help' manual, this easily read book takes the reader through New Life Church's darkest days and shows how God's faithfulness "wins in the end!" My eyes welled with tears through much of the book and I set it down with an unshakable sense of His genuine concern for His children. Very private moments are shared in a sensitive and caring manner.Fear No Evil: A Test of Faith, a Courageous Church, and an Unfailing God Overview

In the Place of Justice: A Story of Punishment and Deliverance ReviewI have lived in Louisiana since 1980 and have followed Wilbert Rideau's story the entire time. I always believed that he should be eligible for parole at some point when fair-minded people in charge of the system believed it was time. I also saw that fair-minded people were not in charge of the system. He was too famous, too outspoken, and a black murder in a racist state with corrupt whites and blacks in power. I was glad in 2005 when he finally got out. It always seemed to me that he had changed and had proven he had rehabilitated himself with some help from the prison system amid a hellish environment. I don't think prisoners should be in a spa-like setting, but they surely should be in a humane environment and should at least have safe conditions with fair options to be rehabilitated and then freed to go into society and have a second chance. Otherwise we just reinforce the violence and anti-social actions that led them to crime in the first place. I think we should set an example of how civilized humans act. Otherwise we are no better than the criminals.
Thus, it was with great delight that I saw this autobiography was for sale. Ii went to a book signing and purchased it and had it signed by the author and spoke with him slightly. He seemed a decent, intelligent, quiet-spoken older man.
Now to the book itself. It is a page turner. At each sitting to read it, I have read at least 100 pages at a time. He is a very good writer and re-creates the world of the Parish jails and of Angola quite vividly. It is all so awful with immense unfairness and in truth evil that it is hard to believe it is not fiction. But it is a true. The parts that describe large and small acts of kindness and fairness from fellow prisoners and prison employees and others are very moving.I really highly recommend this book if you like true stories or any stories. It is basically a saga of determination, transformation, personal integrity, and redemption. It tells of brutal events and of tenacity and of a persons's struggle to develop his own humanity and to keep hope in the face of harsh and quite often unfair circumstances. It is also about coming to terms with having murdered a fellow human being.
The man killed a person in cold blood and wounded two others. That was in 1961. He served 44 years in prison. He changed. He admits the murder was awful and wrong and really hurt others and that he feels great pain about having done it. He has become a good human being. He is a great and talented writer and reporter. Again I will say I am glad he got out and I love his book. Everyone is entitled to feel about him as they do. I am glad i gave his book a chance and read it. Taken on it's own merits, this book measures up as enthralling, real drama. It is a great read.In the Place of Justice: A Story of Punishment and Deliverance Overview

Six Hours One Friday: Living the Power of the Cross (The Bestseller Collection) ReviewWith most books, you read them, they challenge you or entertain you. You finish the book, put it your book case or donate it to a library.
Not with "Six Hours One Friday".
I purchased this book when it was initially published and read it with more eagerness, more reverence with every turn of a page.
Since then, I have re-read it many, many times. It is a part of my permanent library.
The highlight of my spiritual year is Easter. In humble preparation, every Good Friday I take my "Six Hours One Friday" and go to a place of solitude in a park with a picnic lunch, and for 3 hours (noon to 3PM) read once again what Jesus did for me!
There are no words to describe this intense spiritual event.
Always 'new', always personally meaningful, always incredibly humbling.

The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers ReviewAs an eco-friendly interior designer, I constantly keep an eye out for new books in my field. When I saw The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers, I picked it up (at B+N) and read it on the spot.
This is not the first book on this subject, but it is well researched and I had learned a lot. It is written by three authors--doctor Wentz and his son and Donna Wallace, the "listener". It is the the father who provides the unique perspective because he is a cellular doctor and it is through his understanding that we learn how toxic products actually harm and can destroy cells.
The book explains the hidden dangers in the home. The authors believe that indoor air pollution will one day be considered the asbestos of yesteryear.
Beginning in the bedroom, they discuss the common hidden toxins that can harm our health--from pesticides in mattresses, to chemicals in our pajamas to electricity. They also offer simple ans safe solutions.
I love the fact that they tell us to use our noses to help determine what is unhealthy--that a healthy and clean home is one that basically has no smell. They illustrate the dangers of perfume in an experiment with crickets dying from the chemicals that are perfume. And, they compare the dangers to perfume to that of second hand smoke! (As someone who is chemically sensitive, I say, amen! I am just waiting for the fine day that perfume is banned from all public spaces!)
I recommend HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT as a companion to this book, as I use it as a reference for my work. I also like books by Michael Pollan on how and what to eat.

Return to Sawyerton Springs: A Mostly True Tale Filled with Love, Learning, and Laughter ReviewI did laugh out loud a few times, but mostly I found myself smiling as I read about the happenings in this Camelot of small town America, recalled with gentle humor by Andy Andrews. "Return to Sawyerton Springs" is a selection of "mostly true" reminiscences of a minister's son growing up in a close-knit Alabaman community that regards Birmingham as the North.
The tale meanders along like a babbling brook on a lazy summer day, creating a mood of innocent well-being. The stories are like a time capsule of the values of neighborliness and kindness that his upright, church-going community held dear. Andrews is a fine storyteller, and "Return to Sawyerton Springs" will strike a chord with anyone nostalgic for a simpler time.
Return to Sawyerton Springs: A Mostly True Tale Filled with Love, Learning, and Laughter OverviewReturn to a time when life made more sense. For many, such a journey may seem like fantasy, yet for author Andy Andrews, Sawyerton Springs is where he grew up. Andy shares a collection of hilariously heartwarming memories that will inspire your soul and help you remember where life's greatest treasures can still be found.
Filled with an unforgettable cast of characters, this book will engage your mind and heart. You will recall the simple joy of living while laughing to the point of tears. So take a deep breath, and prepare to rekindle your spirit as you return to Sawyerton Springs…

In This Mountain (The Mitford Years, Book 7) ReviewI was so sad to finish this book! What a delight: such an optimistic and hopeful view of life. I almost turned to the first page and started reading it over!
Father Tim and Cynthia have moved back to Mitford after their stint on Whitecap. They are happy to be back, but Fr. Tim is dissatisfied with retired life. He doesn't know what to do with himself. He wrestles with his faith and with the direction his life is turning. Cynthia has received major accolades for her children's books. The Man In The Attic is back in Mitford, Dooley is lovesick, and the "Turkey Club" is meeting at The Grill as always.
With a few surprises along the way and an ending that will leave you gasping, Jan Karon delivers the most notable Mitford story yet! All the characters we have come to love are still in Mitford, and we love them even more.In This Mountain (The Mitford Years, Book 7) Overview

The Noticer: Sometimes, all a person needs is a little perspective. ReviewIf you pick up this book titled THE NOTICER, by Andy Andrews, don't make the mistake I made. Don't wait until bedtime to start reading it. When I picked it up last night, I had every intention of simply reading the introduction and then turning out the light and calling it a day. Having read everything Andy Andrews has written, I knew it would be a good and just wanted to see what it was going to be about. Well, there is no introduction, so I thought I'd just read the first few pages to get a feel for it. I finished reading it around 1:30 this morning. Yes, it's that good.
Okay, it gets even better. Just past midnight, I even got up and ate a plum for a quick midnight snack and told myself, "Okay, you've got a busy day tomorrow. Go to sleep." I turned out the light and it took all of about 3 minutes before I turned it back on and opened the book again. I knew trying to fall asleep was a fruitless endeavor. I simply had to finish the book.
Andy Andrews is one of the finest writers (and public speakers) of our time. If you are not familiar with his work, this book would be a great place to start. For me, it may not have been quite as good as The Traveler's Gift, but that book has had such a profound effect on my life, I may be a little biased. I hope in time, this book will have an equally profound effect and in the few hours since I read it, I have thought about it's messages all day. Those messages are still sinking in and I will certainly read the book again this weekend before I decide who I want to share it with first.
I don't want to spoil the story for anyone, so I will only say the story revolves around a very influential old sage who touches so many lives by simply giving the people he encounters a new persective. When it all boils down to the basics, that's how simple it is in creating the determining factors of our lives. Whether we choose to be happy or miserable all revolves around our perspective.
One of the beauties of this book is that Andrew's deftly applies the "new perspective" principal to so many differing situations. You are sure to find more than a few examples of things that will relate to your own life. There's definately a message here for everyone.
Andy concludes this magnificent story with a Reader's Guide. A few pages of thought provoking questions that will help put it all together for you and would make for an extraordinary group discussion.
For me, personally, the story really helps reinforce my own personal mission - to inspire and empower people professionally, personally and spiritually to elevate their lives to a higher level. There's a little bit of "Jones" in all of us. Read the book and you'll understand exactely what I mean. I give this the highest recommendation possible. The Noticer: Sometimes, all a person needs is a little perspective. Overview
