Buryin' Daddy: Putting My Lebanese, Catholic, Southern Baptist Childhood to Rest (Willie Morris Books in Memoir and Biography) ReviewBuryin' Daddy: Putting My Lebanese, Catholic, Southern Baptist Childhood to Rest is a worthy offering in the University Press of Missisippi "Willie Morris Books in Memoir and Biography" series.
The careful arrangement of everyday events and detailed recounting of specific conversations build what could have been just an autobiographical memoir of growing up in a small Southern town into a compelling mystery. Using the title as a clue, it is apparent that the friction between the author and her father is leading somewhere. The reader is moved through the multicultural universe of this small, Southern town, each ethnic group pulling and tugging on the loyalty of the author.
The Lebanese (really Syrian) enclave came down the Mississippi River in the early 1900's, peddling small wares house to house. Some members stopped in Vicksburg while others moved up the Yazoo River to the thriving river port town. By Nicholas' generation they have become a substantial element in the relatively large Catholic Church and part and parcel of the business community, owning the town's primary car dealership and Main Street grocery and dry goods stores.
Members of the original group marry outside their Lebanese community and the addition of Southern Baptist small farmers from Yazoo County and non-Lebanese, though Catholic, members create some of the tensions that permeate the life of the author. The school integrates and attitudes toward the black community enter the mix.
However, the primary friction arises when the author's mother insists her growing family must leave the grandparent's sheltering home on Grand Avenue (the reader can tell the kind of home by the name of the street) and have a home of their own. The father's discipline appears capricious after the grandparent's benign leadership. He apparently is not as financially successful as his father and the author sees the family denied essential creature comforts.
The separateness of the author, in spite of a plethora of relatives who are always about, is palpable. Tension is exaggerated as the author takes on what she perceives are the problems her father creates for her mother. We get blunt, unvarnished descriptions of unpleasant surroundings in the author's life.
Father dies unexpectedly in the first third of the book. The rest of the short narrative is a nuanced, compelling story of getting away, first to an eastern college then to success in New York in the publishing world. Continual visits home mature the author, who emotionally is firmly tied to this family and this town. She comes to grips with the death of her younger brother through sorting through memories of him with others who loved him also. She is required to accept the beloved grandmother's dementia. Most importantly, she learns many facts about her grandfather and especially her father.
Burying Daddy is a process, along with coming to grips with her harassing memories.
The book takes on the universal experience of maturing. The power of the book makes us realize that we, too, grew up with tunnel vision, only partially knowing and understanding our parents and our world. Forgiveness is sometimes the only answer.
The minutiae of everyday conversations is relieved by lyrical passages describing Yazoo City and the Mississippi Delta that it borders. They remind the reader of the series namesake Yazoo author Willie Morris who also responded to the beauty of that region.

The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers ReviewAs an eco-friendly interior designer, I constantly keep an eye out for new books in my field. When I saw The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers, I picked it up (at B+N) and read it on the spot.
This is not the first book on this subject, but it is well researched and I had learned a lot. It is written by three authors--doctor Wentz and his son and Donna Wallace, the "listener". It is the the father who provides the unique perspective because he is a cellular doctor and it is through his understanding that we learn how toxic products actually harm and can destroy cells.
The book explains the hidden dangers in the home. The authors believe that indoor air pollution will one day be considered the asbestos of yesteryear.
Beginning in the bedroom, they discuss the common hidden toxins that can harm our health--from pesticides in mattresses, to chemicals in our pajamas to electricity. They also offer simple ans safe solutions.
I love the fact that they tell us to use our noses to help determine what is unhealthy--that a healthy and clean home is one that basically has no smell. They illustrate the dangers of perfume in an experiment with crickets dying from the chemicals that are perfume. And, they compare the dangers to perfume to that of second hand smoke! (As someone who is chemically sensitive, I say, amen! I am just waiting for the fine day that perfume is banned from all public spaces!)
I recommend HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT as a companion to this book, as I use it as a reference for my work. I also like books by Michael Pollan on how and what to eat.

To Be Sung Underwater: A Novel ReviewThis novel by Tom McNeal is about Judith, a young woman who, when her parents divorce, moves from Vermont to a small college town in Nebraska where her father is a professor. It is also about Willy, a young man she "abandoned, and yet never quite left behind."
The story is about two worlds: the surface and what lies beneath the surface; the present and the past; the world Judith finds herself in when she reaches a mid-life crisis, and the world she longs for.
Judith lives in Los Angeles with her husband of twenty years. She edits movies. The turning point or "swerve" in her life begins when her husband buys a new bedroom set for their daughter Camille and places the old set out by the pool. To Judy, this bedroom set is not just any furniture. It is a birds-eye maple bedroom set that has family history and a special significance to her.
Judith rents a storage unit and secretly reconstructs it to look like the room she had when she was a teen. She escapes her reality of editing movies and the façade of her marriage by thinking back to the simple joys of her high school years. She finds herself drawn to the storage unit, again and again losing track of all time while she naps peacefully on her birds-eye maple bed.
We quickly realize that Judith's life in Los Angeles is superficial. Her musings about the high plains of Nebraska have the depth of simplicity. Her memories reveal who Judith really is beneath the surface. Those memories involve Willy, a young carpenter who ushered her into womanhood on the birds-eye maple bed and helped her appreciate the beauty of a sunset and his dream of a little acreage where he would one day create a small lake.
Judith's transformation into an alternate world is so complete that she creates a new identity and hires a detective to find three friends from her past. Of course, one of them is Willy, the boy she left in Nebraska.
Tom McNeal, author of award winning "Goodnight, Nebraska," spent part of every summer in Nebraska, at a farm where his mother was raised. To those of us familiar with the area, we recognize Rufus Sage as Chadron and are pleasantly startled to read references to Hemingford, Highway 385, Herman the Germans and other local places. I was not surprised, however, to realize that what matters most happens in small communities in America's heartland, and not on either coast.
I wondered about the title of the book, but then I thought about when I was a kid, taking a bath, and I let my head rest on the bottom of the tub, ears completely submerged, nose above waterline. I remember singing and listening to how different the tune sounded underwater. I remember how the words and music were clear and pure and limited to the voice inside my own head. Those two worlds-- life on the surface and life beneath the surface--still mesmerize me and those same worlds are captured eloquently and reflectively by Tom McNeal.
