Fall Line ReviewRural Georgia 1955. A smooth talking politician glad-handing and helping folks out while he steals their land. An isolated old woman whose only preparation for the impending flooding of her property is to screw the legs off the old bathtub on her front porch. A lot of character types that I'd rather read about than meet in person. Starnes' story is a good way to do just that. And he adds the perspective of an old country dog who seems to have a keener sense of what's happending to his home turf than his human co-habitants. A quick and engaging read.Fall Line Overview

No Remorse: The Rise and Fall of the Killer John Wallace ReviewA complex and erratic man, John Wallace seemed slated from early childhood for his eventual execution since violence was part of his very existence. Being born with a silver spoon, loss of status in early adolescence, and a continued cycle of financial and emotional ups and downs like the murder of his uncle perhaps contributed; a severe case of Spanish Flu has also been suggested as addling his brain but whatever the cause, Wallace was a killer, plain and simple. A bully as a child, he had also killed at least two black men before he bludgeoned and/or shot William Turner in a dispute over moonshine or the rustling of cattle. What apparently sealed Wallace's fate was that he then desecrated the body in an attempt to hide the crime. Murder in mid-twentieth century rural Georgia apparently was not as onerous as disrespect for the dead.
Author Moore carefully documents the life and case of this unique man, showing both the negative and contrastingly positive sides of his character: a nature lover, a caring son and brother, a sympathetic friend, but, still, a cold-blooded killer. If one is an aficionado of true crime, this is a well-written account of a perplexing individual and the society and time in which he lived.

All Aunt Hagar's Children Review
Some things are well worth waiting for and Edward P. Jonses's follow-up to his Pulitzer Prize winning debut novel "The Known World" (2003) is most assuredly one of them. Once again he uses short story formats to illuminate and make memorable his characters, ordinary people, really, but to the reader they are unforgettable. This author's evocation of black life in America is incomparable.
The 14 stories that comprise "All Aunt Hagar's Children" are set in Washington, the city where Jones was raised and now lives. He opens with "In The Blink of God's Eye," the story of Ruth and Aubrey, a young couple in their late teens and recently married. Ruth does not always rest well in "godforsaken Washington" while Aubrey "always slept the sleep of a man not long out of boyhood." One night when Ruth was wakeful she went out in back where she found a baby tied in a bundle hanging from a tree limb. Thus, she thought Washington was "a city where they hung babies in night trees."
As is his wont Jones treats readers to the earlier lives of his characters, rendering them all the more accessible and sympathetic. This is especially true in "Resurrecting Methuselah" in which we meet Anita Channing who sits by the bedside of Bethany, her ill daughter. She sits in a wooden chair built a century and a half ago by a former slave. Anita's husband, Percival, is serving in Okinawa, where he spends much time with a prostitute, Sara Lee. When Percival discovers he has breast cancer he calls Anita and asks her to come to him. She reaches Honolulu, a stopover in her flight, where she has an opportunity to look back on her childhood and wonder what the future holds for herself and her child.
"All Aunt Hagar's Children" concludes with "Tapestry," another story of a young couple, Anne and George, marrying and leaving their rural roots behind. George is a porter on a train, the train that carries them to Washington. As the train slows close to its destination Anne whispers, Mama, Papa, "I'm a long way from home."
For this reader that was the gist of all of these marvelous stories, people seeking a better life a long way from home.
Jones is such an incredibly gifted writer, his prose is succinct, true, impeccably crafted. Reading his work is not only a pleasure but a privilege as well.

The McDonaldization of Society 5 ReviewSo often we hear those words, "I wish there were more time." More time for minding the kids, more time for doing our work with the quality that we somehow know can be attained, more time for creative pursuits. Why this pervasive "time deficit" malaise? Sociologist George Ritzer has some answers, and they are unsettling.
In "The McDonaldization of Society," Ritzer takes the fast-food industry and its principles of business as an organizational template for emerging postmodern society. He points out that the book in not a criticism of McDonald's, nor even the fast-food business, but an analysis of how fast-food organizational practices have permeated into myriad aspects of our social lives. His marshalling of evidience for this trend is compelling. Using many examples from such disparate social institutions as family life, higher education, the funeral business, health care, and entertainment, Ritzer illuminates the broader trends within the "taken for granted" daily routines of life. He does so with a keen sociological eye, but also with a very wry sense of irreverence that adds a sardonic touch of humor to the expose.
The fast-food model, according to Ritzer, has a manner of pushing us towards ever greater reliance on the fostering of quantity over quality, attainment of efficiency, creation of predictability, and reducing much of our life experience to a coldly calculated "value." As one reads further and takes in the diverse landscape of specific illustrations for these trends, one begins to see the "McDonalized" influence everywhere. Then too, one will also grasp why so many of us are bemoaning the demise of free time in our lives, and how we have become unwitting captives of the mindless inertia of "I want it fast, I want it now, I want what's next" mentalities.
Fortunately, Ritzer includes a chapter on what to do about living in a "McDonalized" world. He points out that we do have choices, and responsibilities, shoud we choose to accept them. One can learn to march to a less frantic pace of social organization, and recognize that many of the promised "rewards" of such an accelerated lifestyle are simply false and hollow.
After reading a book like this, one feels compelled to begin thinking through the relationship between personal life and institutional pressures for faster living. That alone is a solid reason to have a copy of this book. It will uncover some unpleasant realities, but at the same time challenge one to get beyond the defeatist attitude of "well, what you gonna' do?"
"McDonaldization of Society" is indeed a wake-up call, but also a consciousness altering work that underscores the important truth: just because the rest of society seems to be running faster and without real purpose, it doesn't mean that one must fall in line. My advice: Purchase this insightful book, take time to read and think about it... read it, in fact, at a favorite "Ma and Pa" type diner, where they won't encourage you to rush out the door and will ask you to wait awhile while the cook fusses over that blue-plate special. A choice, you see.The McDonaldization of Society 5 Overview

Bayou Moon ReviewPlan on starting this book early in the evening. Once started, it's hard to put it down until you've finished it! Bayou Moon has all the best ingredients -touches of voodoo; seances; Southern customs, crimes and culture; dirty politicians; colorful characters and a heroine and protagonist who sizzle. Solving Migon Thibeaux's mystery of what happened to her mother and her mother's lover produces a wonderfully twisted plot. I enjoyed trying to discover "who done it" and was continually surprised to find who the bad guys and the good guys really were! This is a good read! I look forward to Bevill's next novel.Bayou Moon Overview

Me, Governor: My Life in the Rough-and-Tumble World of New Jersey Politics ReviewLoved the book, this man served as acting governor of NJ under 3 consecutive governors, The book is funny, and interesting. He is a true every man, continuing to coach high school basketball even while acting as Governor, Not because it looked good as a politician, but because he loved doing it. If more politicians were like Governor Codey, this world would be a better place.Me, Governor: My Life in the Rough-and-Tumble World of New Jersey Politics Overview

Wiseguy: The 25th Anniversary Edition ReviewI actually recently read the original book although I assume that this one is just as good. One thing is not clear however(although I admit that I did some outside research on this). In the movie and book, Billy Batts was a "made man" who was killed by Tommy, Henry and Jimmy on June 11, 1970, when Tommy was only 20. Batts was a made man and was killed without permission. Tommy was himself killed in January 1979 (when he was only 28), supposedly in retaliation for the Batts killing. This raises two questions: First, given that they went to all kinds of lengths to hide the body and not disclose what they knew about his disapperance, how was it figured out that Tommy, Jimmy and Henry had killed Batts in the first place (and more particularly that it really was Tommy's idea and he was the one who mostly committed the crime)? Second, if Tommy's murder was "in retaliation" for Batts' murder, 8+ years (1970-1979) seems like an awfully long time to wait to retaliate. Anyway, great book and great movie.Wiseguy: The 25th Anniversary Edition Overview

Keys to the Kingdom ReviewSenator Bob Graham is long-time, honarable public servant who was two-time Florida governor and a veteran member of the US Senate. He served as chair of the influential Select Committee on Intelligence and previouly authored a great factual book, "Intelligence Matters" (published in 2004). Reading that book, I found it an amazing journey, well written and a very thorough account of recent American history -- and felt concerned after reading it that perhaps we were not doing enough to prevent future terrorist attacks. Senator Graham was quite specific in his recommendations for tightening security to further protect these United States.
It's obvious that Senator Graham knows a lot about external threats and the terror attacks on the USA, and the potential threats to the USA. He's a very good writer, so when I saw this new book on the shelf I picked it up. Wow! What a read...so this is a novel, fiction. Maybe, maybe not. This is a very powerful book, a page turner, hard to put down.
The book took five years to produce, and the subject matter is believable, plausible, surely possible. Sure, the intelligence community looked it over before publication and passed on the contents, so no real state secrets are revealed. But if just a fraction of what Senator Graham has written about is true - well, pick up the book for yourself and decide. Very serious matters involving the security of our homeland are involved -- and new light is shed on the September 11th events.
This book is fast-paced, action-packed and flows beautifully. Like Nelson DeMille? Robert Ludlum thrillers? This book fits well in that genre.
No doubt this will be a great summer read for many folks and part of the enjoyment is Senator Grahman's writing about certain people (and events) which will "ring true" for you, even if they are fictional characters. Amazing "facts" keep being unveiled.
The people and events depicted are fiction...right Senator Graham? Congratulations to you on a first-time, first rate suspense novel. Keep them coming, even if it takes another five years!

The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers ReviewAs an eco-friendly interior designer, I constantly keep an eye out for new books in my field. When I saw The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers, I picked it up (at B+N) and read it on the spot.
This is not the first book on this subject, but it is well researched and I had learned a lot. It is written by three authors--doctor Wentz and his son and Donna Wallace, the "listener". It is the the father who provides the unique perspective because he is a cellular doctor and it is through his understanding that we learn how toxic products actually harm and can destroy cells.
The book explains the hidden dangers in the home. The authors believe that indoor air pollution will one day be considered the asbestos of yesteryear.
Beginning in the bedroom, they discuss the common hidden toxins that can harm our health--from pesticides in mattresses, to chemicals in our pajamas to electricity. They also offer simple ans safe solutions.
I love the fact that they tell us to use our noses to help determine what is unhealthy--that a healthy and clean home is one that basically has no smell. They illustrate the dangers of perfume in an experiment with crickets dying from the chemicals that are perfume. And, they compare the dangers to perfume to that of second hand smoke! (As someone who is chemically sensitive, I say, amen! I am just waiting for the fine day that perfume is banned from all public spaces!)
I recommend HARMONIOUS ENVIRONMENT as a companion to this book, as I use it as a reference for my work. I also like books by Michael Pollan on how and what to eat.
This book is clear and easy to read and understand. Recommend. The Healthy Home: Simple Truths to Protect Your Family from Hidden Household Dangers Overview

SuperFreakonomics, Illustrated edition: Global Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes, and Why Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life Insurance ReviewI love this book. It is a fascinating look at real data that often tells us a very different story than we are quick to believe. No, it is not a foundational bastion of absolute certainties, but it was never intended to be. This book offers a different way of looking at common everyday issues and poses the idea of "maybe it's not like you always thought it was." It is funny, poignant, quirky, curious, odd and in some cases quite practical (e.g. the Realtor chapter). It's also a quick read, keeps the readers attention throughout.
I loved it.
I particularly like this edition better than the first (Freakonomics) because it saves each punchline for just the right place. The first book, gave you all of the really exciting and interesting punchlines right up front, then gave you chapters detailing each example further into the book. The result was that by the time you got half way through, it became somewhat boring. You already knew what the answer was, so you lost the thrill of surprise and the joy of wondering and speculating and trying to figure it out along the way. This book plays it just right, with a fascinating punchline punctuating each chapter.SuperFreakonomics, Illustrated edition: Global Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes, and Why Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life Insurance Overview
