The Sleeping Dragon ReviewThis novel is a fascinating mix of logical and supra rational happenings. As in real life, the reader is not quite sure where events are leading or what they mean. But in the end all the oddball strands of the plot come together with elegant inevitability.
The narrator Shogo Kosaka, in his early thirties, has already had reversals and grown a bit cynical. His fiancé dumped him for embarrassing reasons, and he got demoted as a result. Now he's an investigative reporter for a second-rate magazine. But Kosaka hides a good heart and a courageous spirit behind his wisecracks.
One night in a typhoon someone removes a manhole cover, and a little boy goes missing, probably drowned. Kosaka, driving home through the storm, gives a lift to sixteen-year-old Shinji Inamura. Shinji seems suspiciously knowledgeable about the incident. Finally he confesses to Kosaka that he's psychic. He wants Kosaka to help him find the culprits.
Kosaka has a hard time believing in Shinji's powers, particularly when Shinji turns out to have a friend who's also psychic. While Kosaka wavers between belief and fear of fakery, he's also dealing with a mystery at the office, where he's getting anonymous blank letters and threatening phone calls.
The quirky plot includes a poignant romance for Kosaka and plenty of challenges for Shinji's impulsive idealism.
The title comes from a comment by a wise old policeman: "...we all have a dragon inside us, with strange and unlimited powers. Sometimes the dragon is asleep, and other times it's awake..."
Miyuki Miyabe is highly original writer. She always delivers a gripping story and, as a bonus, brings us inside the psyche of contemporary Japan. No need to read her books in order; each stands on its own. This is a particularly good one.The Sleeping Dragon Overview

The Real Stars: In Today's America, Who Are the True Heroes ReviewThe articles in this book span about twenty years and are humorous, encouraging, touching, sad and factual. Especially uplifting are the articles pointing out that our military men and women and their families are the "true heroes" and the "real stars' in America. Not the Hollywood actors and actresses and Mr. Stein includes himself in this category.
Mr. Stein makes some fun of himself, Hollywood executives, and corporate executives although he is clearly not as well off as most of those in Hollywood and also doesn't have a lavish life style. He also helps us make some fun of ourselves as employees, as fans of stars and fans of material things that are clearly not as important as your family, how you live your life and how you serve and think of others.
Mr. Stein writes about his late father, Herbert Stein, and how he and his wife lived modestly in Washington, D.C. and how they taught Ben and his sister good values such as hard work, caring for others, and so on. The articles written in the book just after his father's death are also very poignant as he reflects on the times they had together.
Mr. Stein has great respect and love for the people serving in our military and their families and this is much reflected in the articles. He also has admiration for young children who have gone through much pain and suffering with terminal cancer. These different articles are tender stories of real people told with love and respect.
A very uplifting and moving book. Highly recommended.
