Wolf Storm ReviewThis book is so exciting! I felt as if I was in the story or watching it all unfold before me eyes. For a middle grade novel it is very well written. It grasps you and has you wanting to hurry and find out if they make it out alive, become wolf chow or human-sicles (popsicles).
Wolf Storm had me on the edge of my seat and holding my breath until I got to the end of the chapter. Where there I'm taken back to the top of the roller coaster. What a ride! =)
Stefan, well in the beginning of his teenage years, has just started his acting career. He never intended to audition for the role, but when he was asked to try out he unintentionally got the part. And by the twist of fate he ironically takes a similar role in his real life 'disaster'.
At first, Stefan didn't believe that he belonged and that he couldn't keep up with expectations that are needed for his acting role, especially since he had Raine constantly giving him the stink eye, and Sherman giving him attitude on his inadequate acting. But everything changes and he realizes there is more to him; It 'only' took them being stranded, avalanched, and hurt to near freezing to realize it.
(did you catch my hint of sarcasm -_^)
Everything was fine and moving along until everyone decided to go into town for a break. From there everything takes a turn for the worse.
A gripping tale of being stuck in the snowy mountains and the struggle to keep alive till help comes.
Imagine taking care of a 13 year old girl whose always in the Lime Light, a 9 year old that's still too young to know things & has asthma problems no less! And an old man that's on the brink of a heart attack. Oh boy!!
With no food, limited resources, no cellphones (OMG!!), ice and snow everywhere, and hungry wolves waiting for you to make a mistake.
Where's Bear Grylls when you need him!!?? =)
Wolf Storm is a great story giving off the message that you can overcome anything with perseverance, that obstacles overcome makes you stronger, that wild one-eyed wolves are bad news, to always have a lighter on your person, and it's a good a idea to maybe want to have your cellphone with you at ALL TIMES!! ^_^ Thank you Ms Garretson & HarperCollins for a thrilling ride!! Primacy: A Thriller ReviewJ.E. Fishman has written a fantastic first novel. Fishman combines well-drawn characters with an engaging, timely and intriguing plot against a backdrop of cutting-edge science.
As someone who began their career as a scientist, I found Primacy to be realistic, authentic and meaningful. As he hid in an upstairs closet, his father, mother and grandmother were brutally slaughtered along with 10 other victims. Thirteen dead, many wounded, with repercussions still felt today, 61 years later. The story of my dad, like the stories of all of the survivors in this book, is that life must go on. Will it ever be the same, will the pre-violence innocence ever be restored? What is the legacy passed onto the children of these survivors? Was it a deep dark family secret that held shame and created a legacy of fear? How does life go on after unthinkable tragedy.
Ron Franscell captured the essence of each of the survivors' voices in this unique and well researched homage to the spirit of human resilience. I can attest to the accuracy of my dad's story because I watched the level of detail that Ron absorbed for his story alone. My dad had crammed 60 years of history into a suitcase that held newspaper clippings from the darkest days of his life. My dad saved clippings about his own unthinkable tragedy, but he also would save stories about other killings over the decades. He felt the pain of the survivors each time another event unfolded in the news. He would call his kids and say, "did you hear about....., are you ok? Be safe."
My dad wanted his story told, not for the public recognition, but for educational purposes. He wanted people to know that survivors are among us and life does go on beyond the tragedy. His life was a testament to a life lived with purpose and conviction. Ron Franscell gained my father's trust after many months of being phone buddies. My dad would call Ron when oh yet another mass shooting would take place. Ron and my dad became friends.
There are 10 survivor stories in this book. Each one horrific and mind bending. The thread that runs through each of them is that these people survived and even thrived in the face of the most unimaginable tragedies and horror. Life does go on. It must. Sadly, for my dad, he did not live to see this book published. Ron and my dad never met in person. The week Ron came out to interview my dad on what was the 60th anniversary of the murders, turned out instead to be the day we buried my dad. He had a massive stroke as Ron was driving cross country to meet him. He and Ron were going to visit the site on Sept 6, 2009. Instead, Ron attended my dad's funeral and comforted my family in our loss and confusion. But life does go on. The Car ReviewThe Car by Gary Paulsen is a great novel about growing, rebellion, and America. The book begins in Cleveland, Ohio with a 14 year old boy named Terry. His parents, who spend all of there time arguing, decide to leave one another, coincidently at the same time - leaving Terry at home by himself. In his garage there is a little kit car of his fathers that he was forbidden to work on. Now that he has no supervision he decides to put the car together. Terry decides to go west with his new friend, he calls the "cat" since the car is a Blakely Bearcat, to see his only relative, his uncle. On the way he picks up a hitchhiker named Waylon, not by choice, a Vietnam veteran. Waylon is a "child of the sixties and seventies" and tries to teach Terry about "learning". They head to Wayne's house, who is also a Vietnam Vet and together they all three go "trucking". While "trucking" they learn all sorts of things about America, themselves, and each other. Gary Paulsen who also wrote The Hatchet, along with many other celebrated novels is an excellent author. He explains just enough to give the idea of what is going on, and leave the rest to the reader. Unlike some Authors who detail everything so much you don't even want to finish reading. For this reason I think that Gary Paulsen is one of the best authors ever. His books feel so realistic, probably because he writes from his own experience and has an excellent way to describe it. A possible alternate title that might have been better would have been The Cat, but that might not have caught to many peoples interest.The Car Overview
