Nights of the Red Moon Review
The red moon hovers over a tale of murder in East Texas, silent witness to the dead body of Amanda Twiller, casually tossed onto the lawn of her home. Sheriff Bo Handel gradually pieces together motives and suspects in this wryly crafted mystery, Burton imbuing his weathered lawman with a quirky perspective on the world and a lifetime of relationships with friends, loyal deputies and the occasional interaction with FBI sources when the need arises. Like the experiences of this likable widower sheriff, the threads of time and place weave through the lives of regular folks, minor criminals and the inevitable sharks that prey on their weaknesses. Personalities loom large in Burton's story (a low-key but equally affable hypothetical long-lost cousin of James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux), but when the minister's estranged wife is so outrageously displayed in death, Bo takes exception. Like her troubled life, Mrs. Twiller's colorful past leads Bo in many directions.
Slowly, methodically, Handel works the office phones, his deputies, sources and imagination to eliminate one suspect after another in a novel that explores rural Texas and its inhabitants, from hardworking families to the petty criminals who scurry around the edges of opportunity, a slice of American life untouched by city troubles until the creeping violence of the drug culture infects nearly every level of society. Handel tolerates mischief in "his town" only when it harms no one but the doer, but Amanda's murder leads to some ugly revelations and a few blatant lawbreakers who need to be put away. A tale of crime and punishment that focuses on the universality of human failure and the infestation of drugs in East Texas, the investigation moves inexorably toward a climax, the attrition of time demanding occasional retribution and a lot of respect for the character of those who endure and carry on for the sake of the next generation. Burton is an engaging writer with a sly wit and a world of wisdom, a welcome addition to the crime thriller lexicon. Luan Gaines/2010.

While the case may again be less than riveting, Frank and Winslow prove to be an engaging new team. A character-driven novel, it stumbles only in the neglect of Frank's girlfriend Beth Ann, previously a strong woman who in this outing appears only to (reasonably) nag Frank and his attorney for their slacker and unmotivated plan that keeps Frank barely working and living on rice and pasta.
This 211 page novel moves swiftly and the likable characters beg for better cases that will force Frank to step up his investigation skills. This engaging second novel by O'Neil reveals his growing talent and hopefully we can look forward to additional appearances by the witty, laid-back hero.

Naked Heat (Nikki Heat) ReviewI will start this by admitting that whoever is actually writing the "Richard Castle" books is not Doyle or Christie, no. These aren't mind boggling mysteries, but they ARE extremely entertaining.
I enjoyed Heat Wave a lot, but Naked Heat stepped up the writing a bit for me. Maybe it was just because the characters had already been created, but the author found a better voice.
The scene starts about 3 months after HW, with the fallout from Rook's article about Nikki. There's a body, then a couple more, and some really interesting connections between them. The new characters are well formed; the dialog is funny and for the most part not too trite or clichéd, although it does have some close calls.
You will probably end up guessing who the killer is, although the connection will remain a mystery until the end. And as the saying goes, it's the journey, not the destination. Even if you've been on the ride before, it's still enjoyable. :)
Besides, if you're looking at this book you're probably a fan of the show, and how much fun is it to play "spot the tie in" to Castle?Naked Heat (Nikki Heat) Overview

Darkly Dreaming Dexter: A Novel ReviewI usually don't read crime novels, but I'm a big fan of the Showtime series "Dexter," and I wanted to read the novel the show is based on. "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" is the first installment of Jeff Lindsay's series about Dexter Morgan, a serial killer with a conscience. Dexter routinely kills and dismembers people in and around Miami, but unlike other serial killers, Dexter has a strict moral code that he struggles to adhere to: Basically, he only kills bad guys. Dexter struggles to keep his dark side under wraps by working as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department, hanging out with his foster sister, and even having a girlfriend. However, he always succumbs to his "Dark Passenger" and cannot suppress the urge to kill. When a new serial killer begins preying on Miami hookers, Dexter becomes intrigued by his new colleague and is intent on connecting with the murderer, even if it means exposing his own dark secrets.
This book was pretty good. Unlike most crime novels, which I usually think are very poorly written, "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" is composed of a blend of dark humor, intense drama, mystery and suspense, and good old-fashioned blood and gore. I was pleasantly surprised by how much content from the book was used in Season 1 of the television series "Dexter." There are some big differences between the book and the TV show, though. The "Tamiami Butcher" is referred to as the "Ice Truck Killer" in the TV show. The characters of Angel Batista, Vince Masuka, and James Doakes are relatively minor characters in the novel and are featured much more prominently in the television series. Migdia LaGuerta (who is called Maria LaGuerta in the show) is a supporting character in the novel, but is even nastier in the book that she is in the series, if you can believe that.
There are several other plot differences between the book and the novel, and overall, I think the television series is actually much better than the book. All of the characters are much more interesting in the show, and there are more intriguing subplots in the series as well. Also, I thought the ending of the book was extremely rushed, especially the part detailing the relationship Dexter has with the Tamiami Butcher. Hopefully that aspect of things is explored more in Lindsay's other novels, but I don't know if it is or not.
If you're a fan of the show "Dexter" or simply enjoy the crime novel genre, you'll probably find "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" to be an interesting read. However, don't feel like you absolutely need to read the novel if you're a fan of the Showtime series. This is one of those rare instances where the show is actually a lot better than the book.Darkly Dreaming Dexter: A Novel Overview

East on Sunset: A Crime Novel ReviewNo sophomore jinx for Ken Mercer, scoring again with "East on Sunset" and proving that he has the chops to match LA crime writers like Robert Crais or Michael Connelly.
Disgraced former LA narc detective Will Magowan was returned to more familiar SoCal turf after a brief exile in the Pacific Northwest in Mercer's debut, "Slow Burn." The classic tragic hero, Magowan is trying to put his busted life back together, reuniting with his estranged life and expecting a son. So when Will lands a security job with the LA Dodgers, things are looking up for the hapless Magowans - until Erik Crandall shows up. Crandall, a sterozoid-freak ex-con sent to San Quinton courtesy of Will in his LAPD days, is certain Magowan ripped off a half-million bucks worth of dope from the bust, and he wants it back. So the Magowan's briefly idyllic life begins spinning nightmarishly out of control at hands of the menacing Crandall, an unenthused LAPD, and Will's own stubbornness. Simple thuggery gets interesting when Will's once-partner apparently commits suicide, leaving behind what may be the clues to Magowan's fall from grace.
Mercer writes lean, clean prose like the pros - no ham fisted stabs at atmosphere or mood, Elmore Leonard or James Ellroy. He shoots straight from the hip, keeps the action clipping along - and if we're reminded once too much about deceased son Sean or are beginning to think the whining wife Laura is more of a threat than Crandall - hey, it's a small price to pay to welcome fresh talent to a tired genre. Mercer wins readers like Billy Beane wins baseball games - no All Stars in the characters, plot, mystery or setting, but by stitching together solid components that work well together, keep the reader engaged, and delivering the winning combination in the bottom of the ninth.

Twilight at the World of Tomorrow: Genius, Madness, Murder, and the 1939 World's Fair on the Brink of War ReviewI have to admit to having a fascination with the Worlds Fairs in New York and worried this book would either be an overdramatic novelization or a dry as bone read. I was pleasantly surprised, instead, to find a well written and engrossing true-tale - created by using historical documents as the basis upon which to build the story of the Worlds Fair.
After only a few pages, you're hooked as you learn about the persons and personalities behind the 1939 Worlds Fair. Those who thought it up, organized it, worked it, and ultimately the celebrities that visited it. There are a lot of fascinating facts interwoven with the narrative and never once was I bored with the book. The author writes in such a way that you really get a 3-dimensional picture of the people - they are never caricatures or poorly fleshed out. Each feels like someone you might have known and that really makes the read that much more engrossing.
I think it is important to note that this is really about the people behind the fair and not the fair itself. You won't necessarily get a feel of what it was like to be there or experience it - that's for historical or coffee table books. Instead, you'll get a feel of what it was like to live at this time with all the factors that were going on behind the scenes of the build up and then end of the fair.
I was VERY glad to get this and I highly recommend it for history buffs or those who really like the whole idea behind the World Fairs. There is always so much going on behind the scenes and it is clear the author highly researched and really got into the mindset of the people at the time.Twilight at the World of Tomorrow: Genius, Madness, Murder, and the 1939 World's Fair on the Brink of War Overview

Judge Sentences: Tales from the Bench ReviewI began to read this book as soon as it arrived, planning to complete each section as time allowed. Didn't happen! I read the entire book from start to finish in one setting. How to describe it? Human, humane, funny, and poignant, and entirely believable. The author is a concerned and loving individual as he tries to make sense and make judgements in an imperfect setting with limited (or self-serving) information from both sides. His humor is subtle, and the sad stories don't beat you over the head with their pathos, though we readily see the human tragedy that presents itself each day in the courtroom. In Plain Sight (A Wilson Mystery) ReviewIf any book deserved the description of gritty crime drama, it is In Plain Sight by Mike Knowles. Written in narrative style with dialog only when necessary, you get directly into the mind of Wilson who is a very good, bad guy. This is a vicious, bloody and violent story with the Russian mob, crooked cops, and people who get in their way.
The author uses a unique style of adding a psychological look at his characters. There was an interesting look at a lesson Wilson's uncle taught him about the necessary behavior to learn to hide in plain sight. This psychological twist is also used when Wilson sizes up his enemies. There was not a character in the book I really liked, but I don't think it matters. In Plain Sight is not a warm fuzzy. Had I read Mr. Knowles' previous Wilson Mysteries, Darwin's Nightmare and Grinder, I think would have understood the character of Wilson more.

The Deporter: One Agent's Struggle Against the U.S. Government's Refusal to Expel Criminal Aliens Reviewi've just finished reading "the deporter" and it was awesome. i like gritty novels, stories about cops and other government agencies. and to put my tastes on a map, the authors i like are joseph wambaugh and james patterson when it comes to these stories. they write great novels. so naturally i loved this book, "the deporter," even more than my past favorites. i loved it because of it's intelligent characters and because the story here is not only really exciting and painfully shocking - it's all real. the story is true. and it's an eye-opener. and that's the part that gets me angry. that this story is real. and here the author, holbrook, doesn't call for a stop on immigration, but he does lay out some ugly realities. and as an immigrant, i hate how those realities affect the whole issue negatively. i've always argued for more-open-than-not borders, but after reading this book and seeing through a deportation officer's eyes and being down in the street and virtually experiencing his job, i'm not so sure i want those borders so open anymore. immigration is reportedly good for the country but it's too easy to imagine our cities turning into crime-playgrounds for criminal aliens as they aren't being deported. anyway, i could go on, but i'll just say this book gets two thumbs up! i can't recommend this book enough! at the end of the day it's one great story about crime and the cops who stop it.The Deporter: One Agent's Struggle Against the U.S. Government's Refusal to Expel Criminal Aliens Overview

The Threat Matrix: The FBI at War in the Age of Global Terror ReviewI, too, heard the NPR Diane Rehm interview with this author yesterday. I downloaded the sample and immediately started reading it. I just downloaded the book on my Kindle and can hardly put it down! I'm not a fan of nonfiction books, but this reads like a better-than Tom Clancy book. The memories of the Germany-hosted Olympics where the Israeli athletes were mowed down by Palestine terrorists and then the Southern Airlines terror of having to fly back and forth from USA to Cuba are fully described in the early chapters of The Threat Matrix. What an awakening to terror from the "gangsta" days of J.Edgar Hoover!! This book is going to fly off the shelves and into the Kindles when the accolades get out!

Criminal Investigation, 9th Edition ReviewI read this book as part of a university level criminal investigations class for criminal justice professionals, the book being the personal choice of my professor whom himself had over 25 years federal and local law enforcement experience as an investigator. The book read absolutely seemlessly. Chapters were brimming with topical, relevant facts. And the chapters went into sufficient detail for the book to serve as either a solid basis for the criminal justice novice or as a reference for the more advanced professional who may not have the on-the-job exposure to all aspects of criminal investigation. While covering strictly forensic topics it did not cross the line from providing information relevant to an on-scene investigator to that which would only be relevant to a forensic technician, always keeping the material and topics relevant to patrol and investigative law enforcement officers, not forensic technicians. This is not a forensics textbook. This is an investigations handbook. Total hands on. Makes you think. Aids in planning. If anything, the book was brimming from cover to cover to the point that it could very well have gone on in volume after volume. A good starting point.Criminal Investigation, 9th Edition Overview

This book is very well-written, as it portrays Faron Young as a person first. Many biographies about musical artists talk way too much about the music, and not enough about the person. Faron Young's music speaks for itself. However, no one has ever known that much about his life, other than that he was a colorful character who sang country music, used salty language and drank too much. Diekman paints a much more detail picture of an outwardly simple, yet internally very complex man. As you read this book, you will feel the tremendous highs and lows that Young went through in his happy yet often painful life. You will also feel the alternating sense of fun and nervous tension that friends and family felt around him. Once I started reading this book, I could not stop. And while I like Faron Young music, I am not what one would consider to be a die-hard fan. This book took me back through Young's life, as well as the lives of those around him. It is also sad to see how such a super talent died so sad and bitter. But after reading this terrific book, I understand why he died as he did. I have read thousands of bios on everyone from John Adams to Patsy Cline. This is definitely in the top three. It is simply WONDERFUL................It reads great, and paints such a illustrative picture of a man who, I thought I knew a little about........but after reading this book, I realize how little I really knew! I'm gonna read it again, and then go out and buy some Faron Young music. BRAVO!

Getting It Through My Thick Skull: Why I Stayed, What I Learned, and What Millions of People Involved with Sociopaths Need to Know ReviewI was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked his book. It's not a schlocky National Enquireristic piece of junk, it's a thoughtful and inspiring book that I had a hard time putting down.
Here's what was compelling to me... We all look at sensational media coverage of events by looking over the shoulders of reporters and papparazzi. In this book I really got a feel for what's it's like to be the person who's got the camera lens focused on their every move and breath. Mary Jo helped me to feel the violation of that in a very real way. I cannot imagine what it would be like to suffer the trauma of a senseless attack, only to be attacked over and over again by a senseless media circus.
Here's somebody who survived SO many things and it's inspiring to know that she's found a way to be a happy, healthy, and whole person. She's still walking around with a bullet in her head, but seems to have an attitude of optimism and dignity that I don't think I would be able to muster under similar life circumstances. It puts my seemingly "big" problems into perspective.
The most valuable part of this book to the world, I think, is the reference to sociopathic behavior. There is probably a HUGE number of women (and men!) living with sociopaths, completely unaware that the insanity of it isn't NORMAL. It's easy to get lost in that dysfunction, because of the ability of sociopaths to charm their way out of anything. I think it is the same kind of abuse as a spouse beater, without the physical wounds, but much more damaging because it messes with your head so bad.

No Choirboy: Murder, Violence, and Teenagers on Death Row ReviewRiveting! I read it in one day and couldn't wait to recommend it to my high school students. The author, and the prisoners themselves, allows readers to glimpse life on the other side of prison bars that many of us know little about. The stories are poignant, truthful, painful, and insightful. The material is somewhat biased against capital punishment, but it is written in such a manner that the reader is not easily persuaded, but compelled to see such young prisoners as human. The author did a superb job presenting the material and I am a better person for reading it and highly recommend this book!No Choirboy: Murder, Violence, and Teenagers on Death Row Overview

Trespasser ReviewWhen writers like C.J. Box, Tess Gerritsen and Andre Dubus III laud a debut, I sit up and take notice. But I've read all too many writers who have one book in the chamber, and that's all she wrote. Not Paul Doiron. TRESPASSER, his sophomore effort after last year's THE POACHER'S SON (which was nominated for pretty much every major crime fiction award extant), proclaims him a writer to watch.
Maine is a broad canvas, like Alaska or The West. The Pine Tree State possesses breathtaking beauty and old money cheek-by-jowl with chain-saws-and-coffee-brandy rural poverty. In Trespasser, Paul Doiron pits his hero, Mike Bowditch, against pretty much every conceivable trouble from all of the above. But, like C.J. Box's Joe Pickett or Steve Hamilton's Alex McKnight, you can't help but root for the guy. Doiron's writing style and characters appeal to male and female readers alike, and his sense of place and atmosphere (both of which Maine has in abundance) stands with anyone.
