Nights of the Red Moon Review
The red moon hovers over a tale of murder in East Texas, silent witness to the dead body of Amanda Twiller, casually tossed onto the lawn of her home. Sheriff Bo Handel gradually pieces together motives and suspects in this wryly crafted mystery, Burton imbuing his weathered lawman with a quirky perspective on the world and a lifetime of relationships with friends, loyal deputies and the occasional interaction with FBI sources when the need arises. Like the experiences of this likable widower sheriff, the threads of time and place weave through the lives of regular folks, minor criminals and the inevitable sharks that prey on their weaknesses. Personalities loom large in Burton's story (a low-key but equally affable hypothetical long-lost cousin of James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux), but when the minister's estranged wife is so outrageously displayed in death, Bo takes exception. Like her troubled life, Mrs. Twiller's colorful past leads Bo in many directions.
Slowly, methodically, Handel works the office phones, his deputies, sources and imagination to eliminate one suspect after another in a novel that explores rural Texas and its inhabitants, from hardworking families to the petty criminals who scurry around the edges of opportunity, a slice of American life untouched by city troubles until the creeping violence of the drug culture infects nearly every level of society. Handel tolerates mischief in "his town" only when it harms no one but the doer, but Amanda's murder leads to some ugly revelations and a few blatant lawbreakers who need to be put away. A tale of crime and punishment that focuses on the universality of human failure and the infestation of drugs in East Texas, the investigation moves inexorably toward a climax, the attrition of time demanding occasional retribution and a lot of respect for the character of those who endure and carry on for the sake of the next generation. Burton is an engaging writer with a sly wit and a world of wisdom, a welcome addition to the crime thriller lexicon. Luan Gaines/2010.

Mr. Hooligan ReviewRiley James grew up with an alcoholic mother and hustler father who was rarely home. Riley, knowing his way around the rainforest, coastal waters and back roads of Belize, was an easy pick as a smuggler for the Monsanto brothers. Twenty years later, he owns a bar with his good friend Harvey Longworth and has one last run to make before he can call it quits with the Monsantos and enter into a legal life with his American fiancée, Candice. Events spiral out of control beginning with a car accident that pulls Riley into the greedy clutches of corrupt government officials, and no matter how hard Riley tries to make things right, his life is governed by betrayal and violence.

This gritty crime novel moves at a fast pace, building tension and suspense to a surprising end. Vasquez's Elmore Leonardesque writing style guarantees a good read, with well-developed characters and a plot that will not disappoint. Although Riley James is a criminal, he is a likeable, empathetic character and readers will be vested in his attempts to normalize his life. Vasquez's visual descriptive of Belize adds a colorful ambiance, further enriching this intriguing story.

The Harry Bosch Novels Volume 2: The Last Coyote, Trunk Music, Angels Flight ReviewFormer newspaper reporter Michael Connelly has been writing intriguing and suspenseful novels for his Harry Bosch protagonist for over a decade now. The first six of these novels have been collected into two hardcover omnibus volumes.
The first volume is certainly required reading if you want to understand the complete background and motivations of this brooding LAPD detective who won't tolerate injustice or any human vice that feeds it either directly (corruption, politics) or indirectly (bureaucracy, laziness, incompetence). They're interesting reads for sure, especially "The Concrete Blonde". However, those earlier stories expose Connelly as a new novelist unsure of what type of character Bosch is destined to be.
This second volume is the work of a much more seasoned and confident author writing about a multi-dimensional and human character. Without giving away any spoilers, I'll say that these three books develop Bosch well beyond just a grim crime-solving automaton who moves from case to case in a very detached manner. He goes after crimes that have personal significance and he undertakes situations outside his role as a police detective. The result is that by the time you turn the last page, you'll be hooked on the Bosch character, not just the stories of the crimes he's solved. That's the hallmark of a great fiction series.
Plus, these three stories are varied and intriguing in their own separate ways. The universe of characters that surround Bosch rotate in and out in ways that are highly interesting without being incredible. "Trunk Music" stretches this point a bit with a story that throws in every angle imaginable and almost loses its way. However, "Angels Flight" rebounds superbly and gets my vote for the finest book of either volume.
These volumes are must-haves for anyone interested in getting acquainted with one of the best mystery writers working today. At a price less than the cost of three paperbacks, you get a well-bound and attractive hardcover book, making this package a wonderful value as well. The Harry Bosch Novels Volume 2: The Last Coyote, Trunk Music, Angels Flight Overview
