Nights of the Red Moon Review
The red moon hovers over a tale of murder in East Texas, silent witness to the dead body of Amanda Twiller, casually tossed onto the lawn of her home. Sheriff Bo Handel gradually pieces together motives and suspects in this wryly crafted mystery, Burton imbuing his weathered lawman with a quirky perspective on the world and a lifetime of relationships with friends, loyal deputies and the occasional interaction with FBI sources when the need arises. Like the experiences of this likable widower sheriff, the threads of time and place weave through the lives of regular folks, minor criminals and the inevitable sharks that prey on their weaknesses. Personalities loom large in Burton's story (a low-key but equally affable hypothetical long-lost cousin of James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux), but when the minister's estranged wife is so outrageously displayed in death, Bo takes exception. Like her troubled life, Mrs. Twiller's colorful past leads Bo in many directions.
Slowly, methodically, Handel works the office phones, his deputies, sources and imagination to eliminate one suspect after another in a novel that explores rural Texas and its inhabitants, from hardworking families to the petty criminals who scurry around the edges of opportunity, a slice of American life untouched by city troubles until the creeping violence of the drug culture infects nearly every level of society. Handel tolerates mischief in "his town" only when it harms no one but the doer, but Amanda's murder leads to some ugly revelations and a few blatant lawbreakers who need to be put away. A tale of crime and punishment that focuses on the universality of human failure and the infestation of drugs in East Texas, the investigation moves inexorably toward a climax, the attrition of time demanding occasional retribution and a lot of respect for the character of those who endure and carry on for the sake of the next generation. Burton is an engaging writer with a sly wit and a world of wisdom, a welcome addition to the crime thriller lexicon. Luan Gaines/2010.

Smooth Talking Stranger ReviewElla Varner is a columnist living and working in Austin, Texas. She loves her life with her boyfriend Dane and is content in their relationship. Everything changes dramatically however when Ella's younger sister, Tara, has a baby, Luke, and Ella is forced to take care of him. Suddenly, Ella's neat and orderly life is interrupted with bottles, nightly feedings, little sleep, and a small but growing baby.
Ella is determined to do her best by Luke and Tara and she decides the best choice is to find the father. When Tara names wealthy playboy Jack Travis as the father, Ella marches down to his Houston office to get answers. Jack denies that he is Luke's father straight away, but Ella wants a paternity test. Jack agrees knowing he is not the father. But he sure would not mind spending more time with the feisty Ella. Jack is used to arm candy in the women he dates. Ella is anything but that. She is intelligent, strong-minded, and determined to never truly lose herself to a man. Let the battle of wills commence!
Smooth Talking Stranger is not as intense as the previous Travis story, Blue-Eyed Devil. There is more laughter and a lightness that Haven's story lacked, which makes sense given the very different plots of the story. While I definitely enjoyed Smooth Talking Stranger, it did not pull me in quite as much as Haven and Hardy's story. This is a romance that skims along the surface rather than delves deep into the characters' hearts and souls. This is not a bad thing but it is just a major difference. Jack and Ella's story is very enjoyable, and perhaps the most romantic out of all of Lisa Kleypas's contemporary romances but it just did not totally grab me.
That being said, it is still a Kleypas story and considering some of the romance drivel that is published, this book stands heads and tails above others. Ella is an interesting woman to get to know. She feels the pull of love, not only for Jack, but for Luke, but she wants to heartily deny it. She plays her emotions close to the vest while Jack is very free with his feelings, letting her know just how much he has started to love her. Jack is definitely the charmer and rascal he was in previous books as a secondary character, but there is a more serious side that is a welcome addition to his character. He is not perfect and as some of his previous relationships come back to haunt him, he gets a better understanding for just why Ella is so much more right for him.
Smooth Talking Stranger has its swoon-worthy moments and it showcases Lisa Kleypas's fun and unique writing style. I liked the characters and particularly the ending which just seemed very appropriate and wonderful for the overall tone of the book. Murder in the Air: A Dan Rhodes Mystery (Sheriff Dan Rhodes Mystery) ReviewIf you are like me, you always look forward to a trip to Blacklin County. One reason is that it reminds you so much of your home in East Texas. Another is that the characters and stories that emanate from the mind of Bill Crider are endearing, funny, and readable. And yet another trip to Clearview, the county's seat, brings another tear to your eye--whether from nostalgia, laughter or allergy, I'm not saying.
Dan Rhodes faces another intriguing case when the county's most despised man surfaces face down in a local fishing hole apparently drowned by accident. The problem is, the case is too easy to be closed this way, and something keeps niggling at Rhodes's brain. As it turns out the local chicken baron (Lester Hamilton, also known as the deceased) has met with fowl play (puns always intended in Blacklin County). The local character/fisherman Hal Gillis who found the body, also becomes one because he knows too much. And now Rhodes has two murders to solve--with the help, of course, of ace deputy Ruth Grady, comic relief Hack and Lawton at the jailhouse, and the Carl Burns imitator CP (Seepy) Benton who actually teaches math at the local college (instead of English as Burns does). And they do it all without an M-16 (go read the book).
Interesting notes on this installment of the Dan Rhodes mysteries is the reference to Nick Carter instead of the 87th Precinct boys at the hands funeral director Clyde Ballinger, and the pubisher's final decision for title of the book which seems less appropriate than the author's own choice, which you'll have to drag out of Bill.
Fans of serial murder mysteries will want to grab a copy of this one fast. And while you're reading you'll want to keep an eye opened for the references to nostalgic pop culture like Zero and Dr Pepper, and the book and movie titles and descriptions thrown in for good measure. Another five reading glasses, Bill. Keep them coming. (Of course if it's up to the publishers, then tell them I said so.)
