The Snow Angel: A Novel ReviewIt has been a long time since I considered calling in sick because a book had me in it's grips! The Snow Angel had me hooked and I could not put the book down, I wanted more!
The story is compelling, the tension and human drama are real and all the character are fleshed out and got under my skin. Especially Kane, Bell and Easterly. I can't wait to find the three main characters Kane, Bell and Easterly again in a follow up novel. As I said :I am hooked and want more. The Snow Angel: A Novel Overview

The Great Escape ReviewIan Watson's The Great Escape is an incredible anthology of nineteen uniquely original and awe-inspiring short stories, ranging from a group of fallen angels determined to escape Hell, to a vampire with a weakness for confectionaries, to the difficulties of caring for aging parents inside of one's brain rather than in a more traditional nursing home. An amazing selection of vibrantly original, eclectic, and sometimes darkly satirical stories that run from one end of the spectrum of the fantastic to the other, The Great Escape bombards the reader with the new, the unexpected, and the stories that just can't be put down. The Great Escape Overview

Couldn't Keep It to Myself: Testimonies from Our Imprisoned Sisters ReviewAs a reader interested in women's issues I expected to like this book, but I did not expect to be completely captivated and overcome by it, which is what actually happened. It is presented in such a compelling way you become absorbed by each inmate's story and exeriences. It is at the same time heart wrenching and informative. Some common threads run through the individual stories yet each is so unique you feel the pain of each individual story. Photographs of each writer, both past and present, help to make you feel a connection. I gained insight into cultures and lifestyles I knew nothing about and saw a part of life so realistically described that I felt I had been there myself. Wally Lamb did an extraordinary job putting this project together and the result is a book that I feel will benefit everyone and should be read by all.Couldn't Keep It to Myself: Testimonies from Our Imprisoned Sisters Overview

The King of Diamonds ReviewIn 1958 at the Old Bailey in London, David Swain stands on trial for the murder of Ethan Mendel in what has been sensationalized as a crime of passion. David accused Ethan of interfering with his relationship with Katya Osman. Oxford Detective Inspector William Trave testifies, which is a prime reason Swain is convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Although he did his duty, something about the case annoys Trave.
Two years later, Trave's marriage to Vanessa falls apart. At the same time Katya's diamond dealer paternal Uncle Titus lends his support to the DI while ironically having an affair with Vanessa. Osman also conceals that he and his brother-in-law former Nazi sympathizer Franz Claes have kept his niece locked away in her home. Meanwhile, acrimonious and raging Swain works on his escape in order to kill his duplicitous former girlfriend. Just after Swain succeeds in breaking out of prison, someone murders Katya. Although the obvious suspect is the escaped convict who swore he would kill his former lover but Trave hypothesizes that her uncle and his in-law murdered the niece and Mendel. The problem with his theory is his motives re Vanessa.
Although a bit over the top of the Old Bailey, the second DI Trave police procedural (seer The Inheritance) is a super exciting thriller that transports readers back to 1960 Oxford. Trave is terrific as he investigates the second homicide tied to Katya, but this time she is the victim. His peers scoff at his theory as Swain is an easier culprit to hang and besides Trave has a motive to want Osman to hang because his estranged wife and the King of Diamonds dealer are having an affair. Fans will enjoy Simon Tolkien's entertaining historical thriller.

Olive Kitteridge: Fiction ReviewI am not normally a fan of short stories. While I appreciate the technical abilities of the short story writer, I find "shortness" troublesome. Generally, the longer a book is, the more appealing. Consequently, I was initially leery of the descriptions of Elizabeth Strout's newest novel, "Olive Kitteridge," which calls itself "a novel in stories."
All of the stories in this book occur in the town of Crosby, Maine. At the center of many of the book's stories is the person, Olive Kitteridge, a retired teacher. In the stories that don't feature Olive, her name may appear only once in an effort to tie it to the larger work. That the stories center on one town, and a limited number of that town's inhabitants, who also reappear from time to time, I did not encounter my usual problems with short stories. This book gently reminded me of what is best about short-stories: a brief slice of a life, a snapshot that tells a complete-enough story. In having all these stories bound together, one feels a bit like the proverbial "fly on the wall"; a fly who may spend most of, but certainly not all, it's time in one particularly interesting home (Olive's).
I especially enjoyed reading about Olive in her post-retirement years, the ways in which she deals with other people and herself. In many ways, I can identify with Olive, having doled out bits of malice in angering situations; or having been soft and tender-hearted during others. Like Olive, I too have been both fool and sage.
I really enjoyed "Olive Kitteridge." Olive is a complex person vacillating between viciousness and compassion. In the way all people are puzzles, so is Olive. In one story she does something deplorable, in another she potentially saves a life. People can never be fully known, merely experienced in bits and pieces, from which a general portrait may be formed. This book is a testament to the mystery that is humanity: why we do what we do, what motivates us, how even self-knowledge is warped and lacking, and how ultimately, all people are fundamentally incapable of seeing themselves as a whole. Olive also embodies hope: one is never too old for surprises.
Many of the "stories" in "Olive Kitteridge" are deeply profound and thought provoking. I will not be at all surprised when this book does very well. It's structure is unusual; it's message is penetrating and accessible and universal. Olive causes me to think of the many complex, and at times unlikeable, people in my own life in a different way. Strout is a master of revealing the many onion-like layers of interpersonal relationships. Halfway through "Olive Kitteridge" I went out and bought two of her other books. I am also tentatively considering reading some other short-story collections by authors whose novels I've loved.
Like any great book, "Olive Kitteridge" slightly shifts the way in which I look at the world and other people, and perhaps most importantly, myself.Olive Kitteridge: Fiction Overview

One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, No. 1) ReviewWhat a book. This was hilariously funny. Stephanie Plum is from NJ and having some money problems. Sold her furniture, her car has gotten repo and next she will be needing a place to live if she doesn't come up with an idea fast. She goes to see her cousin Vinnie ( Bail bondsman ) looking for a job. The job had just been filled but the bounty hunter he used was having surgery. Stephanie, newly employed as bounty hunter. After all you get 10% and she would get 10k for bringing Joe Morelli in. Joe is a former cop and is running from Murder One. Stephaine and Joe do go back to growing up. This was a great book! Very funny, Ms. Evanovich really has a gift for writing a story in a very refreshing way! The " who done it " I couldn't tell until it happened. The pages just kept turning as the characters were very real, and enjoyable! I can't wait to read the next one!One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, No. 1) Overview

Bury Me in My Jersey: A Memoir of My Father, Football, and Philly ReviewLet me preface this review by saying that I have never been a follower of sports; not to say that I dislike them, but I have never felt the desire to watch a game. With that said, I found myself unable to tear myself away from this book once I began reading. Even though it was far from what I normally choose to read, I was captivated by the writing, the characters, and the power of the stories.
From the end of the second chapter--one of my favorite chapters--I knew that I couldn't put it down. I can't really think of a part of the book I didn't like; although some of the sports references were lost on me (most I remembered from playing Backyard Football, sadly) they were explained well enough that I felt like I knew who they were by the end.
Honestly, though, the best thing about this book were the characters. Or the people, rather. Everyone was so well described, I felt like I knew them. Their reactions were so specific that they ceased to be just names and became distinct personalities.
And the humor--you can't forget the humor. The footnotes, especially, often cracked me up. I often have trouble distinguishing in books whether or not something is meant as a joke, but I had no trouble identifying the voice here, since it was so well-defined.
Some of my favorite parts:
-"What was the point? For who? For what?" (pg. 127) I really liked the tie-in here from an earlier chapter. It seemed almost self-deprecating; there are so many parallels drawn in this book between the narrator's past and football and his dad that it seems it would take several read-throughs (at least for me) to peel back all the layers. The point is, you can tell how well-crafted the story is, just from these few glimpses. Everything has its place, its own significance, its own impact on what is, what had, and what will happen. Nothing feels out of place in any way.
-"Undergrads love it when you curse." (pg. 164) So true.
-The sample Slipknot lyrics.
-I especially liked the sections that talked about writing or teaching, though I may be biased. I found myself curious to know what story it was the Frank Conroy supposedly salvaged from the rejection pile. Also, the bond that was forged between the Dad and his son was not merely based upon football, as it is explained; there was a large emphasis on writing, and the absolute faith for his son to become a published best-selling author; each part was interwoven with the next, so that nothing felt out of place.
-I wanted to go back and count how many times some variation of "streams of urine" popped up. I ended up laughing at every occurrence after the first; just how much cleanup is involved at the Lincoln Financial Field/The Vet after a game, anyway? The part with they boy shoved in a crawlspace by his father made me cringe.
-"Cheesesteaks have always been in my blood, both literally and metaphorically." (pg. 61) For some reason, I immediately imagined little cheesesteak-shaped red blood cells. Side note: Best names of the book: Cal-Cal and Fat Stuff. Fitz and Duffy come in a close second.
-The girl who is "literally unable to walk and chew gum at the same time." (pg. 122) Priceless.
-The honesty of the writing. It is so completely, brutally truthful, it's almost painful. If you're looking for a memoir where the author portrays himself as heroic and an otherwise moral paragon, do not read this book. There is only truth--and a startlingly deep level of self-analysis that will leave you spell-bound. I doubt any of us have discovered as much about ourselves in all of our lives as the author did in 224 pages. And the narrator portrayed is someone readers can root for.
What more is there to say? There wasn't any part I disliked. Although I did not personally connect to the recounting of the games, I loved the descriptions used and the heightened language; at parts, it seemed almost poetic. At no point did I find myself skimming, or bored.
There was one part I was torn on when reading: the ending. I loved it, especially the reflection in the car mirror. But I almost felt that the previous chapter was more conclusive in its ending than the actual final chapter, and I found myself going back to compare them. But then, now that I think about it, I liked the parallel between the beginning and ending.
There is definitely something to be said for a book that leaves you deep in thought, long after you turn the last page.Bury Me in My Jersey: A Memoir of My Father, Football, and Philly Overview

South of the Big Four ReviewThis gentle tour de force is a quintessentially American story yet unlike anything I've read. The characters are original and unforgettable. Five or six times in the course of reading the work, you think you know where Kurtz is going -- but you don't. The language is beautiful throughout but its not an end in itself -- there's a very great, very real story here and its heartbreaking. What whisky is in Hemmingway, work is here. Don't laugh -- unless you can write better than Kurtz.South of the Big Four Overview

The Good Psychologist: A Novel ReviewTHE GOOD PSYCHOLOGIST is the debut novel from Noam Shpancer and shows no signs of being a first novel. This book is written with intelligence, insight, passion and a great sense of humanity. The book is being described as a suspense novel and this can be very misleading. It is in no way a thriller or mere suspense novel. If someone picks it up to read expecting this they will be in for a shock. I certainly hope the word gets spread what this novel really is for it will then attract a whole difference audience who will appreciate this fine work.
This novel is a deep character study. The entire novel is told through the perspective of the main character who is known as only the unnamed psychologist. He lives his life with his practice as well as teaching a night class. As we get to know the good doctor his exlover, also his best friend, announces she is moving. He gets a new and intriguing patient who is a stripper. And one of his students proves to be a troubled case. The story is told through lectures, therapy sessions and pure thoughts as we are in the mind of the psychologist throughout. The drama and mystery that may exist is what one would get by being fully in the thought process of any person. Our psychologist is intelligent, caring and fully human. He reflects on his own imperfections and most importantly tries to be the best he can be while living life. This is a very human novel and was a very daring attempt by the author. For any author such a premise would be either a hit or miss. And here it is a true hit. The way the story brings therapy sessions, lectures and thoughts together merely brings us that much closer into the mind of the psychologist.
The book is in no way meant to be a high praise of the profession or a dig at it either. Our psychologist takes his job seriously and tries sincerely to help others. But the most important part of him is his humanity. What the novel shows is that all people are very complex and that there is much more to each of us deep inside. The journey we go on with the psychologist will have the reader very reflective on their own passions, desires actions and pursuits of life. Getting to know this character is time well spent and this novel is a hugely succesful debut from Noam Shpancer. This is a very intelligent piece of literature that I highly recommend. The Good Psychologist: A Novel Overview

Everything: A Novel ReviewKevin Canty writes with a spare beauty. The book is designed so that there is a lot of white space on the pages and this space carries meaning. 'Everything' is about people who are lost, looking for love, recovering from poor choices and yet have a resiliency that carries them through their damaged lives with strength and a certain dignity. Canty's characters are able to tell us as much about themselves in their silences as when they speak.
The characters that comprise this novel overlap, and each chapter is primarily about one or two of the characters. There is RL, owner of a bait, tackle and guiding shop who has not had a loving relationship in years. He is a big man - in girth, spirit and appetites. He likes his booze and he wishes desperately for a woman. He was married for a while to a Dead Head who followed the Grateful Dead for years, leaving him to raise their daughter, Layla, on his own. Layla gives meaning to his life. She is nineteen years old and a college student. When not at school, she spends her summers in the Montana wilderness with RL where most of this novel takes place. Layla is recovering from a love affair gone amiss. RL realizes that Layla is not likely to be with him for much longer. He is trying to learn how to let her go.
RL decides to take in an old lover of his who is having chemotherapy for melanoma. In the back of his mind he hopes to resurrect some sort of relationship with her despite the fact that she is married. Betsy helps give some meaning to RL's life because, with Layla in college, he faces the empty nest syndrome. With his big heart, he needs to give. However, with his huge appetites, he also expects a lot from others.
June is a close friend of RL's. She was married to RL's best friend who died eleven years ago. As the book begins, June decides to give up her widowhood. Her husband, Taylor, was her great love but now she wants another love. Eleven years of grieving is a long time. On top of that, she is a hospice worker, spending her days with the nearly dead.
Edgar is RL's employee, an artist and lover of fishing. He 'knows' fish and feels at one with the trout that inhabit the rivers of Montana. He is married with one child and another on the way. He is trying to make some difficult decisions in his life.
Canty has an inimitable sense of place. The reader feels like the Montana mountains are looming. I felt the lushness of the land, along with the hard life the inhabitants face. This is not a land for the weak but it can be a land for the lost - an end of the road place where people depend on one another. There is a lot of alcohol consumption in the book but there is rarely a mention of television or movies. Despite the loneliness of all the characters, they depend on one another for sustenance.
The characters speak to us in what they don't say as much as what they tell us. This is a book about everything that makes us human - love, work, life, money, pain, joy, loneliness and connection. Canty gets it. His characters run the gamut of the soul. They are not sweet, nor are they urbanized. I pictured them in Carrhartts and jeans, rubber boots and down parkas. I felt their hands get cold and traveled with them on the dirt roads that were slick with mud or snow. I felt their pain and I soared with them in those rare moments of joy. It takes a fine author to take me to the depths of despair and soar the height of joy with his characters.
Another wonderful book by Canty is Winslow in Love.Everything: A Novel Overview

Murder in the Air: A Dan Rhodes Mystery (Sheriff Dan Rhodes Mystery) ReviewIf you are like me, you always look forward to a trip to Blacklin County. One reason is that it reminds you so much of your home in East Texas. Another is that the characters and stories that emanate from the mind of Bill Crider are endearing, funny, and readable. And yet another trip to Clearview, the county's seat, brings another tear to your eye--whether from nostalgia, laughter or allergy, I'm not saying.
Dan Rhodes faces another intriguing case when the county's most despised man surfaces face down in a local fishing hole apparently drowned by accident. The problem is, the case is too easy to be closed this way, and something keeps niggling at Rhodes's brain. As it turns out the local chicken baron (Lester Hamilton, also known as the deceased) has met with fowl play (puns always intended in Blacklin County). The local character/fisherman Hal Gillis who found the body, also becomes one because he knows too much. And now Rhodes has two murders to solve--with the help, of course, of ace deputy Ruth Grady, comic relief Hack and Lawton at the jailhouse, and the Carl Burns imitator CP (Seepy) Benton who actually teaches math at the local college (instead of English as Burns does). And they do it all without an M-16 (go read the book).
Interesting notes on this installment of the Dan Rhodes mysteries is the reference to Nick Carter instead of the 87th Precinct boys at the hands funeral director Clyde Ballinger, and the pubisher's final decision for title of the book which seems less appropriate than the author's own choice, which you'll have to drag out of Bill.
Fans of serial murder mysteries will want to grab a copy of this one fast. And while you're reading you'll want to keep an eye opened for the references to nostalgic pop culture like Zero and Dr Pepper, and the book and movie titles and descriptions thrown in for good measure. Another five reading glasses, Bill. Keep them coming. (Of course if it's up to the publishers, then tell them I said so.)

The Troubled Man ReviewI've enjoyed the Kurt Wallander series of books for many years, and have read as Kurt went from a young patrolman to, now, a 60 year old man with various illnesses. Being older than that myself, I can sympathize with him over his debilitations, and his fear of looming death. These things are all part of this excellent book.
The plot concerns the future in-laws of his daughter Linda, who both disappear, apparently without any particular reason. Even though the disappearances are not within his police jurisdiction, because of the family ties Kurt gets involved in trying to find them, and what happened and why. The past history of Sweden and the Cold War plays an important role in the plot, one of the more intriguing plots Mr. Mankell has devised for his detective.
I don't want to give anything away for the sake of future readers, except to say that the big "shock" when it comes near the end wasn't really a surprise to me, and shouldn't be to anyone who's paying close attention to the plot. The fact that it took Wallander months to determine what was happening may be traced to his age and illnesses.
This appears to be Kurt's last case about which we will read, but I hope not, although the author seems rather adamant that it will be so. I'm sorry for that, and I will miss these excellent novels, and the characters I have grown to know and like, very much. The Troubled Man Overview

One Rough Man: A Pike Logan Thriller ReviewI am always intimidated to write book reviews simply because others before me sound like they are writing their thesis but One Rough Man deserves my time and energy on a review. I am more of an Emily Giffin kind of girl so this is my first fiction thriller novel. I heard Brad Taylor on a radio interview in Chicago and found him not only incredibly intelligent and knowledgeable about his content but I could also tell that he has a keen sense of humor. He was light hearted in a professional sort of way. That being said, I saw his book at the airport, bought it and then couldn't put it down. It's just really a good read. I don't have a thesaurus on hand to embellish my thoughts so just go with the fact that it's a darn good story that moves fast and keeps you entrenched with a lot of good details. Brad really has a knack with the details, especially when describing the bad guys which, as Americans, we all want a better idea about. Since he knows a thing or two about real bad guys, this makes the book all the more enjoyable. As I read it I pictured the author experiencing similar situations with similar people because, well, he actually has. Oh, and I also found little pieces of his humor in the book as well (something tells me that Brad once threw eggs at the principal's house too). I would really enjoy attending a lecture hosted by Mr. Taylor. I bet he is really, really captivating in person. This girlie girl is now a full fledged thriller fan. Thanks for the read Brad! When does book II come out? I am DYING for Pike and Jennifer to hook up!One Rough Man: A Pike Logan Thriller Overview

American Boy ReviewLarry Watson's AMERICAN BOY is an all-American, universal kind of story that will resonate with anyone who grew up in the American heartland of the 50s and 60s. The typical small town of those decades is portrayed perfectly - those downtown blocks that held hardware and grocery stores with the local lawyer and doctor upstairs over the drugstore. Even the latest Plymouth-Dodge innovation, that infamous and short-lived push-button transmission, is featured, the same one that was immortalized in songwriter Greg Brown's "Brand New '64 Dodge."
Matthew Garth is our unlikely hero, a fatherless 16-17 year-old in the 1962-63 school year, who has attached himself for the past several years to the Dunbars, a prominent family in Willow Falls, Minnesota, a small community of a couple thousand. Johnny Dunbar is his classmate and closest friend, but all that will change when an "older woman" enters the picture in the person of Louisa Lindahl. The head of the family, Dr. Dunbar, is a pillar of the local community, although there are early intimations of that pillar being made of salt, with feet of clay.
Like many small towns, Willow Falls is a study in contrasts and opposites. The falls is not really a falls; Frenchman's Forest is not really a forest, but a dark and secret place where the two then-younger boys first learned about the mechanics of sex from an ill-informed older boy, and which later serves as backdrop to more intimate experimentation. Because one of the things that makes AMERICAN BOY such a universal tale is its minutely descriptive attention to all those familiar rites of passage - smoking, drinking, reckless driving, and of course backseat groping with all the heavy breathing, passionate kisses, frenzied frustrations and furtive fumbling with zippers, clasps, breasts and thighs. There is even a very "Mrs Robinson" scene between Matthew and the local lawyer's wife, but it has its own variations making it both original and derivative all at the same time.
Matthew becomes obsessed with the not-so mysterious twenty-something Lydia, who, through a sequence of shocking events, takes up residence with the Dunbars, destroying and changing not just Matthew's friendship with Johnny, but the whole family dynamic.
Yes, this is a masterfully rendered story of a friendship and family torn assunder and innocence lost. An old tale to be sure, but Watson makes it all seem new and fresh, employing characters all too human and flawed.
As a coming-of-age story, countless comparisons could probably be made. I've already suggested The Graduate, but the ones I first thought of were Evan Hunter's Last Summer and Herman Raucher's Summer of '42, both books from 30-40 years ago, and, more recently, Donald Lystra's northern Michigan story, Season of Water and Ice.
AMERICAN BOY is, in the end, an old tale made new and fresh through the story-telling skills of a master hand at fiction. Larry Watson burst onto the book scene nearly twenty years ago with his first novel, MONTANA 1948., a shocking and beautiful book. His latest offering shows he is still at the top of his game. If you appreciate serious literary fiction, READ THIS BOOK!

The Snowman ReviewExtra Information: The first two books for this Harry Hole series The Bat Man and The Cockroaches have not been produced for translation at this time. The Redbreast: A Novel would be the third book in this series; if you were to start this series my recommendation would be from The Redbreast. The series then follows through in order with Nemesis: A Novel (Harry Hole), The Devil's Star: A Novel, The Redeemer followed by The Snowman which then brings us readers in wait for The Leopard.
Review - The Snowman (Harry Hole, Book Seven)
Little snowflakes start to fall taunting us with what's to come. Flurries grow stronger settling softly on the ground, powdery and fluffy at first but darkness soon takes hold, the cycle turns. Subfreezing temperatures, crystals formulate and yet dipped in magical moonlight everything sparkles and glisten. This brings a gentle calm of all things white and beautiful..............until someone builds a Snowman!
November Oslo, Jo Nesbø brings us into his story during family hour. The first snow has fallen and a discussion is taking place about a solitary figure looming in the garden. A snowman with big black stone eyes staring into the house and yet no one seems to know who built it. That same evening a young boy wakes to find his mother missing, he looks for her but all he finds is her pink scarf which the snowman is now wearing.
Harry Hole is brought in to investigate, what is thought to be a missing person to others, Harry has doubts, convinced there is a connection after receiving an anonymous letter some months earlier signed "The Snowman". His team look into old case files they find an alarming number of wives and mothers disappearances. A second mother then goes missing this time the snowman leaves his signature and handiwork, Harry's horror is confirmed but to catch a killer his to become a pawn in a deadly game for the serial killer will only play against the best.
Love this Authors work, for me in all his books its what this author is not afraid to write about, social issues of life and the way he brings in nature, wildlife to identify, relate too, which keeps these books intelligent and interesting. The cycle of life with all its shaded areas, loyalties or disloyalties, weaknesses, infidelities, parenthood, control, goodness fighting fear/evil from within. I'm not so sure in looking back to the first two books after working my way forwards from the third book and all in translation in this wonderful series this Author proves to stay one step ahead he goes from strength to strength.
Jo Nesbø novels are very descriptive he pays attention to detail with brain teasing puzzles even for us long term readers still he pulls snow hats over our eyes. This novel is darker than the others, close contender the devil's star but darker for me is marvelous and skin crawling with suspense. The Snowman also has references to the first book written The Bat Man which is not in English translation, a story line based in Australia, any references made to that first book are explained throughout.
The Authors observation of people is once again uncanny all are well drawn. Harry Hole is a compelling character to read, still fighting the bottle urges and his love life is complicated. A new character emerges Katrine Bratt who joins Harrys team, you warm to her quickly as she takes the no nonsense approach with life and Harry which is really what he needs.
For any first time readers starting any Jo Nesbø books, go in with suspicion, gather your list of characters remember trust no one and suspect the rest. The author has a remarkable way of twisting and turning plots, throwing in enough red herrings, smoked and salted with changing subjects and diverted argument. Yet he keeps the story line and smaller stories, exciting, entertaining with added dry humor, tying up loose threads and even though he gives enough information pulls off a fast paced unexpected ending. You have to feel convinced and this author for me delivers each and every time.
The Leopard is next in translation and has already won the Danish award Palle Rosenkrantz Prize, congratulation to the Author. Even though its not listed on amazon yet, its already on my wish list in the hope I can have this in the not to distance future.
Fantastic, loved it , The Snowman comes Highly Recommended. Also adding here a thank you to Don Bartlett for the clear translation in the series.

Fallen: A Novel ReviewKarin Slaughter has been entertaining her fans with exciting thrillers with ten novels to her name. One of the reasons that she is so well thought of is that she describes her characters in a way that makes the reader want to know more.
Faith Mitchell shows that she's got the same problems as many parents. She has an infant being watched by her mother and must get home to pick up the child.
Her mother, Evelyn, a retired police commander, is watching Faith's four-month-old dauther, Emma. Faith has been through countless training exercises but when she sees a bloody handprint on her mother's door, she goes into another gear.
After Faith calls for backup, she senses that her mother is in danger and decides not to wait. She enters the home and finds one man deceased, then she confronts two others. There is a deadly encounter at this point that is most visual, as if the reader were watching the action taking place before them.
Will Trent is Faith's partner. Amanda Wagner is his boss and Evelyn's best friend. They lead the investigation and we learn that Evelyn was the commander of a narcotics division prior to her retirement. There was a situation within her unit and due to the legal implications, Evelyn took an early retirment.
The story deals with the loyalty Will and Amanda have for their friend Evelyn. The evidence seems to show that there may be a problem with Evelyn's background but her friends remain strong in their belief of her.
There is also an interesting subplot as Will and Dr. Sara Linton spend time together and form a romantic relationship. We also see Faith wanting to do everything that she can to save her mother and so she begins her own investigation.
The story moves along swiftly and with an inventive plot, knock out characters and a fascinating conclusion, this makes for an engrossing read.Fallen: A Novel Overview
