One Step Behind: A Kurt Wallander Mystery ReviewOn Midsummer night (a big celebration in Sweden) 3 young adults are shot to death in cold blood in a nature reserve in South Sweden. The killer is extremely careful: he removes all traces, including the bodies, and makes the parents belief that their children have gone on an extended summer holiday to Europe. But something is not right and this feeling becomes very urgent when one of Inspector Kurt Wallander's colleagues is found in his apartment with his face blown to pieces. Time for Wallander and his team to start an investigation for a killer that always seems to be one step ahead of the team. Four more people die before the team has an idea who the killer might be, and even when the investigation turns into a manhunt, they need all their considerable skills to bring this case to a good end. And in all this mess Wallander also finds out that he is a diabetic and has to change his lifestyle: not an easy option when you are trying to catch one of the most gruesome serial killers that Sweden has ever seen...

THE INNER CIRCLE is Mari Jungstedt's third book featuring Inspector Anders Knutas and Johan Berg, the television journalist, on Gotland, an island province of Sweden. A team of archeologists and students are working on the foundations of a Viking settlement from 1000 years ago. They are an intense group, excited about their finds, until one of the group disappears. A short time later her body is found, displayed in a manner that suggests a ritual killing. Soon there are other disappearances and more bodies killed and mutilated in the same manner. As Knutas and his team work to solve the killings, they realize that there is an increasingly strident controversy that places the residents of Gotland at loggerheads with those who want to protect its history and its ancient settlements. Myth and mythology are not buried far in the past; pagan gods and dark practices are not far removed from life in the 21st century. Anyone who has enjoyed the first two books in the series, UNSEEN and UNSPOKEN are likely to enjoy this story as well. The Inspector and Silence: An Inspector Van Veeteren Mystery ReviewIn Håkan Nesser's "The Inspector and Silence," Chief Inspector Van Veeteren (VV) is thinking seriously about calling it quits after approximately thirty-five years in the Swedish police force. He is fed up with "rooting around in the rubbish heaps of his environment." A ridge of high pressure has brought extraordinarily hot weather. VV's irritable and sweat-drenched subordinates banter, curse, and insult one another as a way of blowing off steam. Although he is planning to take a vacation in Crete, a new and disturbing case comes along that calls for VV's unique blend of experience, insight, and intuition.
Van Veetern leaves Maardam and travels to Sorbinowo to help Acting Chief of Police Merwin Kluuge look into the disappearance of a thirteen-year-old girl from a camp run by Oscar Yellinek, the founder of the Pure Life "free-church community." This sect is devoted to cleansing souls and achieving enlightenment through "prayers, self-denial, [and] purity." Since Yellinek, his female assistants, and the adolescent girls staying at the camp are highly secretive, the investigation gets off to a rocky start. VV, who usually chews toothpicks to avoid cigarettes, reverts to his bad old ways. He smokes, drinks too much, and becomes more and more frustrated by his lack of progress.
This is an off-beat, bitterly humorous, and character-driven mystery. When dead bodies start to turn up and the press finds out, the pressure mounts to find the perpetrator. "The Inspector and Silence" is an engrossing police procedural about the high price of keeping quiet when it is one's moral duty to speak out. It is also a showcase for police officers, both male and female, who must deal with obstruction of justice, secrets, lies, and unspeakable violence in the course of their work. Yet, they continue to do their jobs in spite of the toll that it takes on their emotional health. Best of all, we get to spend time with the wonderfully colorful, cynical, and philosophical Van Veeteren. Although he is unlucky in love and cantankerous, VV has an incisive intellect that misses very little. He can solve a murder based on stray remarks, body language, and subtle clues. If this is indeed VV's last case, he has certainly earned the right to a peaceful retirement.

The Troubled Man ReviewI've enjoyed the Kurt Wallander series of books for many years, and have read as Kurt went from a young patrolman to, now, a 60 year old man with various illnesses. Being older than that myself, I can sympathize with him over his debilitations, and his fear of looming death. These things are all part of this excellent book.
The plot concerns the future in-laws of his daughter Linda, who both disappear, apparently without any particular reason. Even though the disappearances are not within his police jurisdiction, because of the family ties Kurt gets involved in trying to find them, and what happened and why. The past history of Sweden and the Cold War plays an important role in the plot, one of the more intriguing plots Mr. Mankell has devised for his detective.
I don't want to give anything away for the sake of future readers, except to say that the big "shock" when it comes near the end wasn't really a surprise to me, and shouldn't be to anyone who's paying close attention to the plot. The fact that it took Wallander months to determine what was happening may be traced to his age and illnesses.
This appears to be Kurt's last case about which we will read, but I hope not, although the author seems rather adamant that it will be so. I'm sorry for that, and I will miss these excellent novels, and the characters I have grown to know and like, very much.The Troubled Man Overview
