Chasing Lance: The 2005 Tour de France and Lance Armstrong's Ride of a Lifetime (with 20 photos included) ReviewOne expects a respected author like Martin Dugard to cover the sporting event of the 2005 tour thoroughly and interestingly. But the bonus in "Chasing Lance" is Dugard's magnificently reasoned and masterfully written reason why Lance has transcended sport to become an international icon.
One later chapter is great travel writing. Dugard parallels his process of self-discovery of why HE is chasing Lance with a description of his first-time visit to Lourdes. He interweaves his two thought trains so skillfully that when he finishes his tour of the grotto and winds up his personal and painful train of remembrance and reason, I was gifted with a new insight about myself. The chapter brought me through Lance's struggles to not only renew my appreciation for my cancer surviving wife, but also to see my own dreams and struggles, however meager, in both a more realistic light, and at the same time an even brighter one.

At the time of Armstrong's record 7th straight Tour win, I heard a major American TV business news anchor scoff at Armstrong's advertising appeal saying, "Hey, come on, it's BICYCLE racing!" as if no one cares much about it, not like baseball, for instance. But Dugard convinces the reader (like we needed convicing) that the Lance personna is far bigger than the man--and almost everywhere. What Dugard does so well is not only to describe both the race and the phenomenon, but what it is in US that causes us to hold the IDEA of Lance so special.
So far, Lance has published two volumes of autobiography and his mother's memoirs are also available. Beyond these, teammate Michael Barry offers us a look "Inside the Postal Bus" and outdoor writer Daniel Coyle tracks Lance's 2004 season and the genesis of his darker moods in "Lance Armstong's War". Both are easy reads and have much to offer Lance fans, especially fans of bike racing.
"Chasing Lance", however, is the only one that tries to get at what it is about US, making it a multidimensional examination of this the first mega sports legend of the 21st century, and the first time that cancer survivorship has deservedly resulted in fame and reverence as great or greater than any other human accomplishment.Chasing Lance: The 2005 Tour de France and Lance Armstrong's Ride of a Lifetime (with 20 photos included) Overview

Open: An Autobiography ReviewSo you're thinking this might be one of those recently retired famous people books aren't you? One where a celebrity, or a Politician, or a sports star cranks out hundreds of pages of self-serving, history-correcting drivel in order to cash the big advance check. A book you can't even bring yourself to finish; better than a tranquilizer at bedtime.
Well, this is certainly not that book. "Open" is a journey that I predict will stay with you for a very long time. It's a completely unexpected trip to places you've never been. I'm not one of those quasi-professional reviewers you see on Amazon. But this book practically made me write about it.
Interestingly, Open starts not at the beginning and not quite at the end. Second round, US Open, 2006.
Not the final match of Andre's career--but the one right before that.
Against a competitor you'd never heard of before or since.
The battle was against the guy across the net, and also Andre's hatred of tennis, his failing body, the demons that he harnessed to get through the unending heroic contest that seemed destined to continue until both just fell into a heap on the court. And it is so well told.
After 20 pages, I knew that this was unlike any other biography I had ever read. Couldn't put it down. Couldn't stop thinking about it. Agassi dug deeper inside than most of us ever will have to, to get to core of what made him so powerful as a player and so conflicted as a person. It is all conspicuously real: The small moments, the outlandish triumphs and the friendships that sustained him and/or corrupted him. The gauntlet he had to run through to arrive at the balance and joy he has today. It's transformative.
The headlines about this book have mostly related to Andre's drug use when he was at his lowest. But honestly, although it marked the place from which he recovered and flourished, it's only an incidental part of this story. The story is actually about perseverance, intelligence and raw talent all baked together into a very, very large American life.
If Open doesn't win a Pulitzer Prize, something is terribly wrong. Can I nominate it?

Offsides ReviewSoccer coach Frank "Chief" Fallace was one crazy mother. Small, fit, stone-jawed, and wiry haired, he was my Spanish teacher when I was a freshman in high school, and I can still recall the day he turned beet red while doing an awfully convincing imitation of strangling this stoner in class who'd told him to go "f" himself. I learned quickly that you definitely didn't mess with The Chief.
Thanks to the long reach of Google, I can also tell you that "The Chief" coached the boys' varsity soccer team at Commack High School North for 21 seasons, that his teams won a total of 238 league games, and that he was County Coach of the Year in 1978. I expect that he was a pretty good player himself, during his boyhood back in Italy.
Sportswise, it is a long, long way from early-1970s Long Island to twenty-first century California. The strength of today's youth soccer leagues in my neck of the woods easily meets or exceeds the extraordinary popularity of Little League during my childhood. Back then I never learned to play soccer, nor watched any of the games, despite having many friends on Coach Fallace's teams.
Thus, I learned an embarrassing lot about the rules, positions, and basic strategy of playing soccer through reading OFFSIDES by Erik E. Esckilsen. The author does a great job of keeping our interest by providing solid slices of action without drowning us in either waves of technical jargon or endless play-by-play. I was consistently engaged by the battles on the field.
"Hi, boys and girls. I'm Jimmy Carl Black and I'm the Indian of the group."
--from Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, "We're Only in it for the Money"
In OFFSIDES, the soccer pitch sets the stage for the tribulations of Tom Gray, a young man who has been forced through economic circumstances to move with his mother to Southwind after the death of his father. An extraordinary soccer player whose "Shot of the Year" sent his former Tin River Union High team to last year's finals, Tom will now attend the school that is home to the squad that ultimately derailed the Tin River Union Ravens despite Tom's heroics.
To add insult to injury, Tom's strong pride in his Mohawk heritage is set up for a head-on collision with both the Indian caricature that serves as the mascot of the Southwind Warriors, and the coach who wants Tom to join the team, but who has absolutely no intention of altering the team name or mascot. Coach Dempsey was a student at Southwind when the high school opened, and he knows all about not letting political correctness get in the way of tomahawks, tradition, and team spirit.
What could easily have become a story descending into a didactic diatribe about the team mascot issue, instead employs some fancy footwork to entertain us with a cross between the Bad News Bears and Crutcher's band of misfits in WHALE TALK.
" 'Allard Angel-Agitator launch log, August twenty-three,' [Preston] says in his 'This is your captain speaking' voice. 'Model three. Model three launch--successful. Altitude--new altitude record established at twelve hundred, thirty-seven feet by measurement of base altimeter, recorded and stored in altimeter chip. Recovery and landing apparatus--total malfunction. Repeat, landing apparatus--total malfunction. Salvage effort to commence immediately' "
To achieve this plot twist, the author employs an amusing ensemble of home-schooled self-described science geeks, a mysterious homeless kid, and a foreign-born paraplegic shopkeeper-turned-coach, accompanied by his hot Russian-born blonde granddaughter, to assist Tom in eventually "bringing it on" to Coach Dempsey and the Southwind players.
The subtleties and complexities in Coach Dempsey's personality and background bring a strong realism to his character. The underlying story concerning Tom's younger years on "the res", the difficulties that he and his mother are facing because of institutional prejudice toward Native Americans (particularly involving his Dad's death and the insurance company), and the snippets of background alluding to the Mohawks' dangerous real-life role--in constructing the iron framework on some of our nation's most heralded superstructures--add a real depth to the story.
And then there is the underlying name and mascot issue which, to some of us, is personal and real. Our own middle school--where Shari teaches--employs both the name "Warriors" as well as an Indian caricature as the mascot, just like in the book. Our School Board turned a deaf ear to my advocacy for change the past two years. Hopefully the winds of change are finally arriving.
But in any case, readers are sure to get a kick out of OFFSIDES. (Whoops! Yellow penalty card given for really bad pun.)

The Hustle: One Team and Ten Lives in Black and White ReviewI loved it! "The Hustle" is a unique and intelligent book. On one level, it can be read as an intriguing tale about 10 boys - black and white, rich and poor -- who came together at age 14 to play basketball together for a season in Seattle. They won the state championship that year, and then went their separate ways. The book is an effort to find out what happened over the past two decades to these boys - how they grew into men, and whether the team, as an integration experiment, made a difference to each of their lives. The guys themselves are pretty interesting: they include a prosecutor who tried the notorious Green River Killer, a dot-com millionaire-turned hedgefund manager making a killing of Seattle's economic boom, a recovering crack addict, a weed dealer struggling to get out of the trade, a former hustler turned pentacostal minister, and a reclusive wine maker in Oregon. Tragically, one of the star players on the team was brutally murdered, which is a shock that propels the book and makes others on the team ponder their own life chances and luck.
On a deeper level, "The Hustle" can be seen as an exploration of race and class in America over the past 30 years (indeed, longer, as Merlino puts each character in a much larger historical context). Merlino uses the tales of each individual boy on the basketball team -- with all their struggles, their successes, their woes, their joys, their personal histories and families -- to open a window on a different aspect of American life during the past 20 years, all with Seattle as the backdrop: the dotcom boom and the instant millionaires, the crack era and the war on drugs, the challenges of creating a diverse community in elite schools, the struggling public education system, gentrification and its impact, and manhood in a time of economic and cultural uncertainty.
It is at once very personal, and at the same time "big picture" -- looking at the political, economic and cultural changes of the past twenty years, and how this group tries to find and define their own space as men on this shifting canvas. If you are a sports fan or played group sports as a kid, you will relate to the games and the comraderie described in the book. Even if you are not a sports fan (I like sports, but am not a massive fan), the use of the team as a tool to explore larger issues is still highly compelling.
Definitely worth a read.

Bury Me in My Jersey: A Memoir of My Father, Football, and Philly ReviewLet me preface this review by saying that I have never been a follower of sports; not to say that I dislike them, but I have never felt the desire to watch a game. With that said, I found myself unable to tear myself away from this book once I began reading. Even though it was far from what I normally choose to read, I was captivated by the writing, the characters, and the power of the stories.
From the end of the second chapter--one of my favorite chapters--I knew that I couldn't put it down. I can't really think of a part of the book I didn't like; although some of the sports references were lost on me (most I remembered from playing Backyard Football, sadly) they were explained well enough that I felt like I knew who they were by the end.
Honestly, though, the best thing about this book were the characters. Or the people, rather. Everyone was so well described, I felt like I knew them. Their reactions were so specific that they ceased to be just names and became distinct personalities.
And the humor--you can't forget the humor. The footnotes, especially, often cracked me up. I often have trouble distinguishing in books whether or not something is meant as a joke, but I had no trouble identifying the voice here, since it was so well-defined.
Some of my favorite parts:
-"What was the point? For who? For what?" (pg. 127) I really liked the tie-in here from an earlier chapter. It seemed almost self-deprecating; there are so many parallels drawn in this book between the narrator's past and football and his dad that it seems it would take several read-throughs (at least for me) to peel back all the layers. The point is, you can tell how well-crafted the story is, just from these few glimpses. Everything has its place, its own significance, its own impact on what is, what had, and what will happen. Nothing feels out of place in any way.
-"Undergrads love it when you curse." (pg. 164) So true.
-The sample Slipknot lyrics.
-I especially liked the sections that talked about writing or teaching, though I may be biased. I found myself curious to know what story it was the Frank Conroy supposedly salvaged from the rejection pile. Also, the bond that was forged between the Dad and his son was not merely based upon football, as it is explained; there was a large emphasis on writing, and the absolute faith for his son to become a published best-selling author; each part was interwoven with the next, so that nothing felt out of place.
-I wanted to go back and count how many times some variation of "streams of urine" popped up. I ended up laughing at every occurrence after the first; just how much cleanup is involved at the Lincoln Financial Field/The Vet after a game, anyway? The part with they boy shoved in a crawlspace by his father made me cringe.
-"Cheesesteaks have always been in my blood, both literally and metaphorically." (pg. 61) For some reason, I immediately imagined little cheesesteak-shaped red blood cells. Side note: Best names of the book: Cal-Cal and Fat Stuff. Fitz and Duffy come in a close second.
-The girl who is "literally unable to walk and chew gum at the same time." (pg. 122) Priceless.
-The honesty of the writing. It is so completely, brutally truthful, it's almost painful. If you're looking for a memoir where the author portrays himself as heroic and an otherwise moral paragon, do not read this book. There is only truth--and a startlingly deep level of self-analysis that will leave you spell-bound. I doubt any of us have discovered as much about ourselves in all of our lives as the author did in 224 pages. And the narrator portrayed is someone readers can root for.
What more is there to say? There wasn't any part I disliked. Although I did not personally connect to the recounting of the games, I loved the descriptions used and the heightened language; at parts, it seemed almost poetic. At no point did I find myself skimming, or bored.
There was one part I was torn on when reading: the ending. I loved it, especially the reflection in the car mirror. But I almost felt that the previous chapter was more conclusive in its ending than the actual final chapter, and I found myself going back to compare them. But then, now that I think about it, I liked the parallel between the beginning and ending.
There is definitely something to be said for a book that leaves you deep in thought, long after you turn the last page.Bury Me in My Jersey: A Memoir of My Father, Football, and Philly Overview

Soccer Dad: A Father, a Son, and a Magic Season ReviewMy husband and I could relate to this book on many levels. Our children are much younger than his son but, as this author retells stories of his boy growing up in soccer and his passion for the sport, we could have inserted ourselves into the pages of this book. Wetherell's casual style of writing was enjoyable, although at times it seemed a bit wordy and off topic (a few small tangents I could have done without). Overall, it was an enjoyable read. I chuckled out loud more than a few times and even shed a tear when I could relate so personally. Wetherell draws you into his family and into himself in such a way that any sports parent could relate.Soccer Dad: A Father, a Son, and a Magic Season Overview

Financing Sport, Second Edition (Sport Management Library) ReviewThe book is a bit outdated because some of the things it talks about in relation to some of the stadiums and things to come are in existence or never came to be. Payback Time ReviewThis book sounded really good from the write up on it. It has a little mystery and intrigue in the high school sport area. I really liked the start of the book and could relate to Mitch (danny). The story gets really good as Mitch and Kimi try to figure out just who Angel is and where he came from.
The story at the end just falls flat and ends very abruptly. It finishes so fast that you feel like you missed alot about what exactly happened and you want to read more about the characters and their lives.Payback Time Overview
