Twenty Minutes in Manhattan ReviewMichael Sorkin has written the best book on architecture and cities I have read in thirty years.
The groaning tables of books on architecture and its vulgar opposite, real estate, have been near collapse from useless piles of theories, career promotions, trashing old houses, freezing relics, flipping toxic properties, making tidy fortunes by deceiving yearning home buyers, and most of all boosting the pathetic dreams of new urbanists out to out-do Disneyesque fantasists.
Sorkin shows that cities are far better than they have been made out to be by defilers of the landscape who want to ruin them in order to sell new, improved cleansing soapsuds.
By walking daily from his home to studio along a small chunk of lower Manhattan, historicized Greenwich Village to tonified Tribeca, Sorkin has gestated thousands of eye-widening insights about what works in cities and what doesn't.
He gives little credit to aggressive professional planners in thrall to rich developers, instead he bestows awards on street entrepreneurs and neighborhood believers. He wonderfully and informatively describes details of large failures and small successes in New York City, the United States, Europe, Asia and elsewhere he has traveled to lecture and study -- many sure to start as headshaking before erupting as in belly-laughs.
Incivil discourse -- urban warfare -- gets special attention, the worst and the best, the enduring homicidal threat of infernal vehicles against pedestrians fighting for their lives. The cellphone yakkers, the widebody baby strollers, the second-hand smokers, the Formula 1 jerks in from Jersey, the national security bollards, the the homeland security aggressors, the corporate haters of trees, the venal, cruel, landlords at home and work, the fancy architects without scruple, what else have you always wanted somebody to challenge, ridicule and perfectly plan for extinction.
Sorkin handily provides tips for winning exclusive use of an elevator, what to enjoy in cities no tour guide knows, who to be forever angry at for damaging our habitats, what each of us can do to contribute to -- demand of our elected representatives, designers and educators -- places to live and thrive under our own guidance, free of orchestrated interference by exploiters of cities and their covert lobbyists and financiers.
Get this heart-warming, mind-stretching book, take a hike with Sorkin, dodge insane traffic, dump garbage in front of your landlord's office, pray for rent control to spread around the world.

Everything but the Squeal: Eating the Whole Hog in Northern Spain ReviewI bought this book because I wanted to travel to Galicia and wanted to get the local scoop on the life, food and culture there. I wanted very much to like this book and was looking forward to a fun read. However, 10+ pages in, I began to get bored as the pace is very slow. It felt like reading someone's rambling travel diary. The insights are not particularly revelatory; neither are the anecdotes. I flipped on and read bits of it here and there, but the tone continued in that rambling, disorganized style.
The book's central idea is that the author goes around Galicia trying different styles of pork dishes. It would have been better as a magazine article or a series of blog posts, but this is a very thick book with small font and no pictures (like a veritable novel!). If this is really nothing but a single-idea book, an editor could have cut half of it, increased the font size, thrown in some recipes and color photos.
The only people who could have pulled this kind of book off are Jeffrey Steingarten and Anthony Bourdain - they are funnier, edgier, throw out more interesting ideas bound together by much tighter prose. I regret spending money on this book. I read about 30 pages of it and gave up. I am still looking for that definitive, well-written book about modern Galicia.Everything but the Squeal: Eating the Whole Hog in Northern Spain Overview

Roastbeef's Promise: When Your Dad's Dying Wish Is to Have His Ashes Sprinkled in Each State, What's a Son to Do ReviewThe premise in unusual yet carried out so well that it is sometimes hysterically funny. Jim "Roastbeef" Hume's father is suffering from a severe case of Alzheimer's Disease, a lifelong hater of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, he now believes that he is Roosevelt and making executive decisions. In his last hours, he asks that his body be cremated and his ashes scattered throughout the 48 contiguous states of the United States. Jim is a mediocre college student with no money, so even though his father was demented when he made the request, to Jim a promise is a promise, so he embarks on the journey, which starts in the Washington D. C. area.
Jim travels by car, bus, moped, bicycle, truck, train, and on foot. He bums rides, jobs and almost everything else when he can't find enough work to continue the journey. In a very funny book, the best part by far was when he was describing his "Uncle Spud." "Spud" was a member of his father's army unit in World War II and he received a Purple Heart for his wound in "hand-to-hand combat" with a German woman armed with a potato peeler. Spud is an unmarried Professor of agriculture at Cal Poly and the description of this colorful character had me laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes.
This is the most unusual road story that I have ever read, Jim struggles with adversity, everything from getting his car stolen to being thrown in jail to having the container of his father's ashes overturned and stolen. Yet he perseveres, meeting some of the oddest people ever to appear in a story, so quirky that they were plausible. It is one of the best pieces of humorous fiction that I have ever read.

Authentic Ecolodges ReviewTourism is a double-edged sword, in that in can bring revenue into communities, but can also damage fragile ecosystems and social structures. Eco-tourism, when done well, is a thoughtful and careful way to ensure environmental and social objectives are met, while still offering visitors the opportunity to visit magical and inspiring places. But it is also a buzz-word, applied to any "nature tourism" destination. Hitesh's book looks at places where ecotourism is real, and where local people and communities are both involved in, and benefit from the tourism enterprise, as well as where fragile and beautiful ecosystems and wildlife are protected and carefully managed to avoid destruction. The photography is gorgeous and the book is inspiring and thought-provoking. It will help people who want to be responsible and thoughtful in their travel...and give plenty of ideas to visitors whatever their budget. It is also, just simply, a beautiful book.... the world is such an incredible place!Authentic Ecolodges Overview

Costa Rica Handbook, 3rd: Tread Your Own Path (Footprint Costa Rica Handbook) ReviewI have bought a number of guide and other books on Costa Rica and this is the one I will actually take along when traveling through the country. Current and excellent summary of information on sights, lodging, restaurants in the area.
Best part for me were the excellent maps of each region of the country. Most books have one small map of the entire country and then I try with a auto map to find a section covering the area around Lake Arenal or Rincon de La Vieja and with this book I do not have to do this. Each section has an excellent map at a scale that is appropriate. If you are getting just one book to use for planning your travels around Costa Rica this is the one to buy.

Bicycling beyond the Divide: Two Journeys into the West (Outdoor Lives) ReviewBicycling beyond the Divide: Two Journeys into the West (Outdoor Lives)
This is an adventure story that is as much about how people in all the small rural towns and parks have changed from 1985 to 2005 as it is about bicycling through the Western United Sates. This book is made up of many portraits of people met and images of the American landscape as described by a shy traveler who is a great listener and neutral absorber of everyplace he peddles through (as well as the places he doesn't make it via bicycle) as this country is no easy ride. Making this book a really interesting read.Bicycling beyond the Divide: Two Journeys into the West (Outdoor Lives) Overview

The Curse of the Labrador Duck: My Obsessive Quest to the Edge of Extinction ReviewThis work is a first person account of a rather obsessive ornithologist in his quest to locate, observe and study every Labrador Duck in existence. At this point the reader should know that this particular species of duck has been extinct for around 130 to 140 years now so we are talking stuffed ducks in various museums and private collections. This search took several years to complete and the author takes us with him on his journeys around the world.
You cannot help but compare Glen Chilton's style of write to that of Bill Bryson. Both authors have a rather low keyed and quirky outlook on life and their writing reflects that fact. Chilton has used this search for this dead duck to hang a very mellow travel book on and as a premise to observe the human condition as he travels from place to place.
I personally enjoyed this read but then it must be noted that I am rather obsessive in nature myself, am an avid birder and have been for years, and I enjoy reading most of Bill Bryson's work. I also enjoy travel and enjoy musty museums so this work met my needs perfectly.
I did get quite a number of laughs out of reading this work as the author's self depreciating wry sense of humor fit me like a glove and I understood perfectly where he was coming from as I read his words. The entire book is written in a light, conversational manner and is simply a fun read. I look forward to reading any future work by this author.

El Monstruo: Dread and Redemption in Mexico City ReviewJohn Ross, the venerable veterano of US expatriate writers in Mexico City has written a very readable history of Mexico City -- "El Monstruo" -- from the pre-Columbian era to the present day. Ross himself has lived in El Centro -- the heart of the city -- since the earthquake of 1985 and in the past quarter-century has been an eyewitness to some very remarkable events. Among these have been two stolen presidential elections, a devastating earthquake, the awakening of civil society among the masses and other major and minor upheavals in the political sphere. He has witnessed the day-to-day struggle of the average person in the city and surrounding areas, knows them well and can discuss their situations with passion and empathy -- and with good humor all at once.
Some other reviewers have noted slight inaccuracies, but all told, and while I agree they exist and that his editor should have caught them, I don't think they take much away from this book. In his words, Ross takes you there -- whether it's in the midst of the Revolution of 1810, or the revolutionary chaos of first quarter of the 20th Century, to the immense protests in the Zocalo subsequent to the election fraud of the 2006 presidential election. He almost seems to have been an eyewitness to these events and it makes for page-turning reading.
One thing that Ross's book shows is the incredible, unrelenting violence in the city -- and the country at large -- resulting from extreme class inequalities and the corruption that these inequities have fomented. I find it remarkable that the Mexican people continue to persevere -- even when they know from bitter, first-hand experience that the deck is stacked against them. You gotta have a sense of humor to live in that giant city -- and a whole lotta soul, too.
And speaking of corruption? People in the US, who think that the government is broken and can't get anything done? That think our politicians are crooks will have their eyes opened wide to what corruption and injustice really look like. Ross gets into this aspect in great detail.
Also, Ross discusses the extreme environmental situation in the Mexico City metro area. This is a city that's probably the most dangerous to your health in the world in terms of environmental degradation. And there's the distinct possibility that this immense metro area of 30 million-plus people could actually run out of water -- adds to the living on the environmental edge aspects of this place.
I'd love to see a documentary film or PBS-type television series based on this book. A project such as this would really help folks on the US side to better understand how and why Mexico is what it is.
For all the above reasons and more, I recommend this book for anyone to read who wants/needs a basic, but never boring, background on the history and people of Mexico City. Use it as a point of departure for further research into the details of this amazing city. Five stars.El Monstruo: Dread and Redemption in Mexico City Overview

Central America & Mexico Handbook, 18th: The only travel guide to cover Mexico and the 7 Central American nations (Footprint Central America Handbook) ReviewFootprint does a great job covering this region of Latin America in a single volume. The pages are thin enough to pack a comparable amount of information as found in 5 different Lonely Planet guidebooks. The accommodation listings are succint but helpful, and the descriptions of the attractions are intelligently described. It would definitely be the book to bring for someone traveling in multiple countries. I have been disappointed with some of the Footprint guides for other regions of the world, but I loved their guide for Mexico and Central America.Central America & Mexico Handbook, 18th: The only travel guide to cover Mexico and the 7 Central American nations (Footprint Central America Handbook) Overview

Pittsburgh: A New Portrait ReviewFranklin Toker has written a series of books about the architecture of Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania, and each is clearly a labor of love. About 3/4ths of this book is about the city proper, and about a hundred pages cover outlying communities - not nearly enough to even scratch the surface of the outlying municipalities and suburbs.
For each neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh, Toker describes a bit of its history and what makes it special, with an emphasis on specific historic structures of note. I found it was helpful to have the Google Streetview feature open on my computer while reading the book, so I could see the building in question. An 11-page appendix lists the significant buildings, with addresses, dates, and architects' names.
Quite apart from the textual element of the book, this book is visually beautiful. Nearly every two-page spread has a color photograph, and the numerous maps are of a higher caliber than one would expect in a book of this nature.

Bowling Across America: 50 States in Rented Shoes ReviewThis is the true story of a man who does what many in their late 20's always dream about, wander with a purpose. The author is a man in his late 20s, several years into the grind of life, who experiences the death of his father. This leads him to analyze his own life and is the catalyst for an adventure his father first started but was interrupted by life (work, family etc.) Walsh's dry wit and insights keeps the narrative moving along and is what separates this from a standard tale of a "quarter life crisis." I laughed out loud on a dozen different occasions.
"Bowling..." does a wonderful job capturing the angst, dilemmas and sources of happiness that is so typical of that segment of life. Walsh does a masterful job weaving in past experiences into the present that paints a wonderful self-portrait and offers the reader ample opportunity to relate. Scattered throughout are some wonderful insights on bowling, life, family and relationships. This is a great read.

Where To Go When (Eyewitness Travel Guides) ReviewTwo years ago, the producers of the PBS series, Globe Trekker, released a tie-in book similar in approach to this one called Globe Trekker's World: What's On in the World...and When. Travel writer Joseph Rosendo takes the same approach of presenting a global calendar of must-see sights, events and unique festivals. Granted the paperback Globe Trekker calendar guidebook is half the price, but this has the advantage of the glossy, luxuriant look of the DK Eyewitness Guides adapted into a coffee-table book format full of their superb color photography. As the consulting editor, Rosendo has designed the book specifically to overload the reader's visual senses with exotic images that whet an appetite for further investigation.
Whereas "Globe Trekker" is targeted more to the backpack adventurer, this book encompasses a broader spectrum of experiences, for example, what to do for five days in March during the Fallas Festival in Valencia, Spain, or four days in July during the Calgary Stampede, or ten days sailing in Kerala, India, in December. Not only are there renowned festivals around the world to attend but also more personalized experiences recommended that range from luxuriant trips of romantic fantasy to affordable family getaways. The presentation is smart simply because Rosendo lets the seasons dictate the order of the highlights rather than the geography itself. Each month opens with a two-page spread of thirty key activities occurring at that time around the world of which a dozen are highlighted with greater detail.
Key bits of advice are presented with a couple of lines on such topics as getting there and getting around, what it costs to eat , what to do for a recommended period of time, and even a comment on the local do's and don'ts to avoid being labeled an ugly American. But make no mistake, it's the lush, often dazzling photography that is the draw here, not the relatively cursory information provided. What the DK Eyewitness Guides do especially well is make visual sense of what other guidebooks simply describe in words. This large-format book goes even further in bundling the diverse world of experiences to be had if one ventures forth to find them at the optimal time and with an unlimited budget.Where To Go When (Eyewitness Travel Guides) Overview

Chile Handbook, 6th: Travel guide to Chile (Footprint Chile Handbook) ReviewGood information, recommendations were surprisingly accurate and useful. Compared to LP or Rough Guide, the Chile Footprint seems to be written more for diverse travelers looking to mix cheap with moderate prices, exactly my type of traveler. Example: Book includes good reviews of budget hostels in Pucon, but also doesn't show fear for making recommendations that cost a bit more. The top recommended guide up Volcan Villarica (Paredon, great guides!), was not the cheapest, but they gave us the best experience. We used the guide for travel in Santiago and the Lake District and found it helped navigate places to stay and eat. Wished it included a detailed map supplement, but otherwise the maps worked in a pinch for finding major waypoints.
Note: This is a hardback book, but the size and weight is similar if not smaller than the comparable LP guide. The hardback actually makes the book more usable as you can open the book wide. Did not find this a hindrance at all while traveling.
Spent a long time finding a good guide book for countries in South America, and I can honestly say I was satisfied (with a great sigh of relief) that Footprint appears to be the answer moving forward. Highly recommended.Chile Handbook, 6th: Travel guide to Chile (Footprint Chile Handbook) Overview

Dark Souls: A Novel ReviewA good friend at a local indie heard me raving over Paula Morris' Ruined. When the ARC for Dark Souls came in she saved it for me and surprised me with it last a short time ago and I could not resist starting it as soon as I was able. I am really not a ghost story fan. But, I really love Paula Morris' writing. She really tells a good story. I will start with the cover. It is haunting but, I really like it. The cobblestone streets and the whole 'Old England' appeal to it just draw me in and I imagine there really is a street that looks like this in York.
We have a set of new characters in Dark Souls. I have to admit I was hoping there was more New Orleans in this one. But, one of the things that this author does so well is set a scene. She does an excellent job of helping you feel as if you are actually seeing the buildings, streets and people yourself. She does not overdo it by inundating us with what someone is wearing or what the furniture looks like. She gives us what is pivotal to the story. She just has a way of making you see the picture in your head if you are visual reader like me.
In Dark Souls a family tragedy has turned the Tennant family's world upside down. They decide to take advantage of both parents having a chance to do some visiting work in York, England, and make it a family vacation. Miranda, the curious intelligent protagonist of the story, has come to England with what might be seen as a gift or a curse. As she works her way through it alone she becomes engulfed in a mystery that has its basis in the early 1800's and is one of the pivotal moments in York, England's history. The story is well written and supports my initial reaction to Paula Morris' writing skills and I look forward to where she takes us to visit next.

Sideways on a Scooter: Life and Love in India ReviewI really enjoyed this book. Although its purpose was somewhat different, I found myself thinking: This is what Eat, Pray, Love could have been. I mean that Miranda Kennedy's new book is not self-absorbed, not overly packaged, and not glossily superficial in its conclusions. I also did not find it boring in the least (I believe another reviewer had that experience.)
Several things struck me very positively about Sideways on a Scooter. First of all, I now have insights into the Indian culture that I might never have had; and not big-stroke, world-stage, political/economic insights, as much as intricate and human insights. I really enjoyed getting to know the people, the neighborhoods, and the customs Ms. Kennedy encountered as a young foreign correspondent. One moment I was shocked, the next touched. I shook my head in dismay, and rooted whole-heartedly for the underdogs - the upwardly non-mobile, the jaded, the cats. I rooted for Ms. Kennedy too, the young woman desperately seeking independence and belonging at the same time.
There was a little ambiguity at moments in terms of past/present orientation, but I have to say that I much prefer that to slick and overly controlled. This book felt ever so slightly messy, and I easily became comfortable with the medium being the message. There were no tidy lives in Sideways on a Scooter.
The book ends rather quietly and perhaps with almost too little denouement. But there is an epilogue, which is pretty satisfying for those of us who want to know how things have gone since then. I felt a little like giving the book a hug at the end. In fact I think I may have.
Would I recommend this to a friend? Yes, especially if that friend were female and interested in other cultures, or in the bold and trembling adventures of youth.

Radio Shangri-La: What I Learned in Bhutan, the Happiest Kingdom on Earth ReviewI tend to enjoy travelogues that focus on weird things, like French Dirt: The Story of a Garden in the South of France or A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail, and Radio Shangri-La was no exception. This was a book that was as entertaining as it was educational and inspirational and it convinced me to take a trip to Bhutan myself.
The entire book is about the life and times of Lisa Napoli when she decided to leave her public radio job in Los Angeles and go work for a radio station in the tiny Asian kingdom of Bhutan. There she regales us with stories about the people there, gives us comparisons and contrasts with Bhutan and the Western World, shows us how the country is rapidly changing and becoming Westernized (for good and for bad) and most of all, we see her fall in love with this obscure, almost unknown country. You also get to see the madness that ensues when one of her Bhutanese friends comes to visit her and the drama that unfolds there.
Overall, the entire book is one that is hard to put down. My only complaints is that Lisa Napoli starts to be really candid with aspects of her life such as being raped or hooking up with a guy, but then completely shuts the reader out regarding why a relationship ended. Twice she hooks up with someone that came into her life because of Bhutan and she spends a great deal of time talking about her attraction to them and the slow burn to actually becoming involved with them. Then right after she hits that climax...she says "and it just didn't work out." Then it's never mentioned again. This is poor writing on Napoli's part, as the author either needs to stay to keep the same level of candidness consistent throughout the entire story being told.
One other note - at the end of the book, Napoli gives a list of books and websites to learn more about Bhutan. I went to several of them but was disappointed to see that the website for what this book revolves around (Kuzoo FM) hasn't been updated in over two years. I'm surprised neither Napoli nor the editor/publisher of the book caught that and that nothing was made of this.
Overall, in spite of a few minor writing/researching errors, I really enjoyed this book and I know I'll be picking it up again as the years go by. As I've said, it inspired me to take a trip to Bhutan myself before its culture and charm are completely destroyed by Westernization/modernization, and that's how I know a book has really caught me.Radio Shangri-La: What I Learned in Bhutan, the Happiest Kingdom on Earth Overview
