An Abundance of Katherines ReviewSince I've always been a fan of Young Adult and Juvenile books--love to read them, love to write them--I just had to see what all the fuss was about with author John Green's coming-of-age novel. What sets it apart from others in the genre?
I started reading and quickly found out: it's an original concept, a laugh-out-loud funny story, complete with satire and an American road trip that's unlike any road trip I ever took. I'm enamored with this book and Green's main character, Colin Singleton, a loner with a quirky fascination for anagrams, math and odd facts. His main problem is that he has a hard time making friends, but NO problem with finding girlfriends.
But keeping them is another story!
At the end of his senior year of high school, "Katherine the Nineteenth" dumps him ... only the latest in a chain of rejections. As a result, he becomes indecisive about his future and begins to question his identity, his future.
What is Colin's problem? Why can't he keep his friends? When his friend Hassan suggests a road trip, what happens when the boys take off? What does a cemetery in the middle of rural Tennessee have to do with him? And who's Archduke Franz Ferdinand? Will Colin and Hassan fulfill Colin's quest to understand why he is always being dumped by his girlfriends?
Since Colin is a fading prodigy whose hobbies include making anagrams, memorizing odd historical facts, mathematical equations, and dating girls named Katherine, what mathematical equation does he formulate to explain why so many dump him? And just how many Katherines make an "abundance?"
You're invited on Colin's journey to find the answers to all those questions, but I can tell you one thing without spoiling the plot: you're in for one hilarious road trip!
An Abundance of Katherines has a little bit of everything: adventure, humor, math, verbal games, little-known historical facts, and humorous tales of boy/girl relationships as the boys begin to learn more about the opposite sex.

Green is such a masterful storyteller with a talent for creating believable characters, I couldn't put this book down. I hope he writes a sequel because I'd like to have some more fun adventures with Colin and Hassan.
This hardcover version was published by Dutton Juvenile in 2006, but the paperback is due for release in August 2008. Since it's to be listed at $3.99, I suggest waiting until then to read it. What a bargain!
A final note: This is one of those YA books geared for adults too. I'm not the only one who enjoyed it; many of the rave reviews are from adults. I would have given it five stars, but in a few places it was not as smooth as it could have been.
Film rights to John Green's Printz-award-winning first book, Looking For Alaska, were acquired by Paramount Pictures, with production in its early stages.

Savvy ReviewThe Beaumonts are a unique family made up truly talented individuals. As each kid hits the age of thirteen, his or her inherent power comes to light. They call this talent "savvy," and it can be anything. When a Beaumont celebrates that fateful, lucky thirteen, everyone waits with baited breath to see what happens. No matter what, a savvy is one birthday gift you can't return.
They don't know exactly where it comes from, but they do know that it runs down Momma's side of the family. Daddy's a regular guy, happy with his family and content with his job. Meanwhile, Momma's relatives can do all sorts of wacky things. Great-Aunt Jules would step back twenty minutes in time every time she sneezed. Olive, a second cousin, has the ability to melt ice with her glare. Grandpa Bomba creates new places "whenever and wherever" he pleases, such as the stretch of land stuck between Kansas and Nebraska where he lives with his daughter and their family. (They call it Kansaska or Nebransas.) His wife caught radio waves in old glass jars, saving snippets of songs and stories that she could tune into anytime. Now that she's passed away, the family is extremely careful with these containers and treasures the sounds they emit upon a gentle loosening of their lids.
Then there's the immediately family. Momma's perfect, always - that's her savvy. Oldest child Rocket, aged seventeen, is the body electric, able to illuminate rooms during a blackout or teasingly zap a sibling whenever he feels like it. Weather shakes the next oldest boy, fourteen-year-old Fish, whose emotional hurricane can manifest into a real storm. The youngest kids, somber seven-year-old Samson and imaginative three-year-old Gypsy, are years away from getting their savvies, but when the story opens, middle child Mississippi is about to turn thirteen.
Affectionately called Mibs by her family, a nickname created by Gypsy in an attempt to pronounce her sister's name, our beloved narrator is appropriately awkward for her age and anxious for her birthday. She knows something's coming, something good.
Then something bad happens. The night before her birthday, Mibs' father is in a car accident and taken to a hospital. Momma and Rocket rush off to tend to him, leaving the other children in the care of Grandpa Bomba. Instead of having a happy birthday at home, Mibs finds herself at a gathering planned by the pastor's wife, Miss Rosemary. Mibs and her siblings, already worried about their father, now worry that Mibs' savvy will make itself known in public.
When the birthday girl discovers that a Bible salesman's bus came from the direction of the hospital where her father is resting, she impulsively sneaks on board. The stowaway count increases when Fish and Samson decide to get on the bus, as do the pastor's offspring, defiant Bobbi (who has a crush on Rocket) and gentle Will Junior (who has a crush on Mibs).
The salesman starts down the road, oblivious to his new cargo, and Mibs goes from excited to scared in the blink of an eye. They're heading in the opposite direction, away from the hospital rather than towards it! Her savvy, which had presented itself only a short while before, starts playing with her mind, but she tries to keep it a secret.
Mibs looks around and realizes that she's on an unplanned road trip to who-knows-where with two of her brothers, one of whom barely speaks, a meek salesman named Lester that she doesn't know, and the pastor's kids. As unpredictable and unprecedented as the trip may be, one thing's for certain: Mibs will never forget her thirteenth birthday.
Ingrid Law infuses her sweet family-oriented story with mischief, creating a special effect. Whether or not they have special powers, each character is easily distinguishable from the others, including the grown-ups. It's almost as if the kids from the Maggie Valley books by Kerry Madden (Gentle's Holler, etc) were given the powers of the X-Men. The fact that the Beaumonts gain their powers at the age of thirteen is a perfect nod to their coming-of-age, and this book is a treat for all ages.
Savvy is, from start to finish, a delightful journey. This rite of passage is highly recommended.Savvy Overview

When Nicky's mom brings Reggie home from the shelter Nicky goes ballistic. His mom says "You have always wanted a dog and now you have one." Nicky's parents are divorced and every time Nicky has plans with his dad his dad cancels. One night when Reggie attacks Nicky's mom she says "I will be getting animal control out here tomorrow morning." That is the night of the great escape. It takes one mistake to miss up you whole life. Reggie didn't attack Nicky's mom for no reason. She was going to give Nicky a high-5 and Reggie doesn't like it when someone puts their hand up to Nicky. Nicky and Reggie go on a journey they won't forget.
I love the way Art Corriveau writes this book. He does different headings instead of chapters like Wednesday night, the Holke's office. Art writes in great detail and is an amazing author. Art gives many details about the plot, setting, and characters.
I was shocked while reading How I (Nicky Flynn) Finally get a Life (and a dog). There are many twists and turns in this crazy book. It is breathe taking and an adventure of a lifetime

The story starts off with the girls discovering what they believe to be the dead body of Ian Thomas, the accused killer of their childhood friend, Alison DiLaurentis. The girls hear a snap in the woods and quickly go for help. But by the time the cops show up to investigate, there is no evidence of a body. Nothing remains in the space where Ian was moments ago.
From this point on, the rest of the story is downhill for Spencer, Hanna, Aria, and Emily. Soon, the girls are branded as liars and can no longer go to the cops for help. Besides, Detective Wilden is acting suspicious. The girls uncover a connection between the detective, Alison's brother, Jason, and Ian Thomas from high school. How deep is the connection, and could there be a cover-up of some kind?
Throughout all of the murder drama and hunt for Ali's killer, the girls struggle to move on with their lives. But just as with the police, there are complications.
Spencer is positive she's adopted and is determined to find her birth mother. Only, once again, Spencer is taken advantage of. Emily has a new boyfriend, but his mother obviously hates her. Hanna is in a battle of wits with her step-sister, Kate. They are fighting over Aria's younger brother, Mike, and Hanna is determined to win his heart. And a chance encounter with Jason DiLaurentis rekindles the crush Aria had on him when she was younger.
KILLER is one of those books that is setting up the reader for what is to come in future installments. There is a lot of stuff going on throughout the book, yet it seems that none of it gets resolved by the time the reader gets to the final page. It will keep the reader anxious for the next chapter and frustrated that the next book is not available yet.
The final note from the ever mysterious "A" at the end of the novel sums the book up nicely... "The questions are probably killing you..." and "It's enough to make anyone crazy." Need I say more???

Someone Like You ReviewHalley was named for her grandmother, who was named for the comet. Scarlett, across the street, was named for you-know-who. Both are "onlies," just turning sixteen, and have been best friends, almost-sisters since they were eleven. Then Michael, the boy to whom Scarlett lost her virginity only the night before, is killed in a car wreck and -- you guessed it -- she's pregnant. Her mother also had gotten pregnant in high school and (fortunately for Scarlett) had kept the baby, and now she decides to do the same. Meanwhile, Halley is getting more and more involved with Macon, Michael's dangerous buddy, who wants more than she's ultimately willing to give. The nine months of Scarlett's pregnancy is the backdrop for a very well-written story about love and sex and real friendship and dealing with parents. And the final scene, in the hospital waiting room, is very cinematic. This is a terrific book for teenagers, but it's also simply a very, very well done novel.Someone Like You Overview

Clay Gardener, Med Tech One, is the youngest employee in a Georgia hospital. Nearly eighteen years ago, Clay himself entered the world in a far away hospital in Endurance, Texas, where his mother died giving birth to him.
For the past ten years Clay has been best friend and cycling partner to Joey Chancey. The pair met after the warehouse in Endurance, where Clay's dad had worked, burned to the ground and Clay's dad moved him and his sister to the Georgia town where his dad's old Vietnam War buddy -- Joey's dad -- lives. Clay, who with Joey, graduated from high school last month, has always wanted to be a doctor, but he doesn't have the grades or the money to pursue his dream. Instead, he's doing twelve-hour shifts at the hospital. Joey, the class valedictorian and football hero, is heading to Duke in the fall.
But after Clay gets off the tough shift that was marked by the teen girl's death (after a car accident), he wearily enters the shed in Joey's backyard -- the shed that has always been Clay and Joey's clubhouse and sanctuary -- and finds Joey naked and in a violent, psychotic state. Apparently it has something to do with a party Joey had been at. After an intense struggle in the shed, Clay has to call 911 and soon Joey is on life support at the hospital.
What has happened to the supposedly straight-arrow Joey and what is the deal with Michelle, the girl who was sort of with Clay but who has been coming on strong to Joey?
BLOOD BROTHERS is a gritty mystery which is relentless in its pacing because Clay has to sandwich his attempts to figure out what happened to Joey into those all-too-brief periods of time when he is not either working at the hospital or watching his friend's struggle in critical care.
The author's long career working in hospitals, beginning as a teenager, is clearly responsible for the vivid depictions of hospital work -- from the yucky and mundane tasks to the life-and-death climaxes -- which will hold the interest of all but the most squeamish readers. Chalk another one up to the Class of 2K7.

Roastbeef's Promise: When Your Dad's Dying Wish Is to Have His Ashes Sprinkled in Each State, What's a Son to Do ReviewThe premise in unusual yet carried out so well that it is sometimes hysterically funny. Jim "Roastbeef" Hume's father is suffering from a severe case of Alzheimer's Disease, a lifelong hater of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, he now believes that he is Roosevelt and making executive decisions. In his last hours, he asks that his body be cremated and his ashes scattered throughout the 48 contiguous states of the United States. Jim is a mediocre college student with no money, so even though his father was demented when he made the request, to Jim a promise is a promise, so he embarks on the journey, which starts in the Washington D. C. area.
Jim travels by car, bus, moped, bicycle, truck, train, and on foot. He bums rides, jobs and almost everything else when he can't find enough work to continue the journey. In a very funny book, the best part by far was when he was describing his "Uncle Spud." "Spud" was a member of his father's army unit in World War II and he received a Purple Heart for his wound in "hand-to-hand combat" with a German woman armed with a potato peeler. Spud is an unmarried Professor of agriculture at Cal Poly and the description of this colorful character had me laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes.
This is the most unusual road story that I have ever read, Jim struggles with adversity, everything from getting his car stolen to being thrown in jail to having the container of his father's ashes overturned and stolen. Yet he perseveres, meeting some of the oddest people ever to appear in a story, so quirky that they were plausible. It is one of the best pieces of humorous fiction that I have ever read.

You Are Here ReviewReasons I loved this book:
1. Factoids. Like do you know where we get "OK" from?
2. I loved Emma, the female protagonist. She's spunky, fun, adventurous, and unapologetically moody.
3. Peter really won me over! At first I, much like Emma, kind of dismissed Peter, the map-loving male protagonist, but he wormed his way into my heart!
4. The Maps. I've always loved to travel, but for some reason I never considered the maps, and what they represent, and how interesting they really can be.
5. There's no big twist, no crazy surprise, but the ending really snuck up on me and made a huge impression. I keep thinking about it, and inevitably rereading it, not because it's shocking or unexpected, but because its so heartfelt and true.
This book really struck a chord with me; all throughout, I kept thinking that not all who wander are lost and that despite the fact that I can't always find my way, the journey is the most important part.You Are Here Overview

The Space Between Trees ReviewI ended up liking this book a lot more than I thought I would at first, and I believe that's because the author (accidentally? purposely?) changed the general personality of her protagonist after the first few chapters.
At first, Evie seemed like such a child, that I kept having to remind myself that this was a teenager into whose head I was peeking. But after the incident that shapes the book's overall plot, Evie normalizes, and instead of the socially inept weirdo she seemed at the start, she comes off more as a shy, thoughtful young woman -- and that made it much easier to get behind her.
The Space Between Trees isn't so much a murder mystery, as a story about identity and grief and adolescence. I found myself quite wrapped up in the story, and while this wasn't a perfect tale, it was definitely an interesting and engaging one. Recommended.The Space Between Trees Overview

Freaks and Revelations ReviewOne crisp Thursday evening in Los Angeles in 1980, a young gay male, living on the streets as a prostitute, is beaten nearly to death by a gang of Neo-Nazi skinhead punks. At a decisive moment during the fray, the leader of the punks and the young victim lock eyes. Twenty-five years later, that moment uncoils across a table at a coffee shop when both men, now employees of the Museum of Tolerance, meet to discuss a class they are to teach and they recognize each other.
The true story of these events flickered briefly across the media during 2005. The story rose and then died like all media tales as a surprising outcome to what the world saw as yet another act of violence among the blind and the frightened.
Novelist and drama instructor Davida Wills Hurwin saw the incident as a moment in human experience that stands out clear and pure as a silver bell; one that needed to be rung again and more loudly. She met with Matthew Boger and Timothy Zaal and told their stories. The result is Freaks and Revelations.
Freaks and Revelations retells the story in fiction, starting 15 years before the 1980 event. Told separately from the point of view of the two young men, the tales flows from the first pages like two rivers rushing towards a confluence, each event in these young men's lives descending through rapids that carry them decisively into each other's paths. The tales descend not just as random flotsam on some bigger flow, but as young men who build lives and communities and world views that shape their course and their ideas and create their experiences.
The choice to tell their stories in fiction was a result in part of the creative process Hurwin went through to develop this book. But in greater part it was a result of two things. First, that it is difficult to convey the immensity of human experience through nonfiction narratives. The greatest nonfiction as we know it now is drawn together with fictional tissue - some measure of the decision-maker, the actor, the victim - that we might understand the impulse and flow of events, rather than just see the milestones.
Second, the truth is victim not just to memory but to the fears and emotional strata of the players, especially young ones, and even more so, those who have lived through trauma. Our world view, our ability to build and retain a context is not only evolving in youth, but creates a false and narrow narrative for our actions. Trauma adds a layer of misdirection and encapsulation that is impossible to breach without the tools of fiction.
The telling is as gritty as their days and nights, as dark and as light as their hopes and dreams. Although Scholastic is a young adult book publisher, this story is told without the circumspect and moral overtones of most YA fiction. Sex, drugs, and violence take their proper place in these young men's stories. Hurwin has reached inside these characters and their times to let us live two lives in full surround - in taste and smell and sound.
Although the opportunity for moral heavy-handedness lurks through the entire tale, Hurwin lets the characters and events speak for themselves. The result is one of the most compelling books that frames tolerance in many years. This book rises to the category of books like The Diary of Anne Frank and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, books that immerse us in lives that help us see our experience in a broader, more accepting context. Freaks and Revelations does the only justice a book can do to that Los Angeles night in 1980.
Matthew and Timothy continue to work side-by-side at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. They now call themselves friends. Their road since their encounter 25 years after Matthew's beating has been rocky. But their example is a shining one. It is a privilege to read their story in Freaks and Revelations.

Vicious Little Darlings ReviewI recently had the pleasure of reading Vicious Little Darlings. I'm an avid reader of sci-fi / fantasy. This being outside my usual genre, I was expecting to be disappointed but thought I would give the book a chance since my friend recommended it so enthusiastically.
VLD is a superbly written story about the friendship between 3 young women, told from the perspective of our protagonist, Sarah Weaver. Prosaically witty, cleverly woven, a study in contradiction. Sarah, Maddy, and Agnes are the most unlikely of friends. Despite the natural rifts arising from their respective socioeconomic stations in life, as fate would have it, our main characters soon find their lives inextricably woven together. All 3 possess a seemingly innocent demeanor, one that the audience would expect of any young college-going debutant preparing to enter society. But beneath their youthful exteriors lurk deeper currents of darkness: emotional scars, human brokenness, and loneliness - issues that one might be less surprised to discover upon the examination of an embittered soul at the end of life. Despite the sometimes disturbingly erratic and eerie behavior of the characters, the author still manages to make us fall in love with them. While Maddy may seem at first read to be the obvious antagonist, the author challenges us to look outside the proverbial box and to question if the true antagonist might more aptly be life itself - that these characters are really all tragic victims of the isolation inherent in our current social construct. While carrying the reader through the untamed terrain of the characters' internal experiences, the author skillfully balances the rawness with notes of beauty and wry humor. The whole effect is exhilarating, experientially bringing the reader into the eye while the storm rages all around. As the story climaxes, it leaves the reader with a sense of breathlessness and hopeful calm. The simple conclusion is artfully subtle, gently urging readers to continue pondering the lives to which they just bore silent witness.
VLD is an impressive and imaginative debut for Katherine Easer, one that highlights her skill and talent as an author with great promise. The book is a page-turner that will entertain and satisfy you. I look forward to her future works!Vicious Little Darlings Overview

How To Steal A Car ReviewKelleigh Monahan is not your typical car thief. In fact, she is anything but a car thief. She shrouds herself in a mix of black and gray, and she would rather hide than talk to someone she doesn't know. She has her best friend, Jen, in which everything is shared, including their co-boyfriend Will. Kelleigh also has the typical lawyer father and a mother who goes all out on cooking and cleaning --- and, occasionally, drinking. What's even more atypical of a car thief is that Kelleigh isn't even old enough to drive. She just received her learner's permit and is forced to drive around with an adult in the passenger seat. But that one day at the mall will change everything.
As Kelleigh and Jen are sitting outside the shopping center eating ice cream, Kelleigh sees a man drop his keys and walk away without noticing. Kelleigh picks up the keys, thinking that she would return them, but something stops her. She never planned on taking his car, but by mere coincidence she finds out that he lives only a few blocks away. Surely he won't notice that his boring car, a Toyota or a Honda or something, is missing for a few minutes as she takes it around the block for a quick ride? While everything is returned as it was, Kelleigh walks away with a newfound addiction that she can't quite shake.
And if you can steal a car once, Kelleigh figures, you can steal a car twice. The second time is less of a joy ride and more of a revenge-motivated debacle. A little more effort is needed to duplicate keys and trick the owner, but, in the end, Kelleigh succeeds in her plan. How and why it ends up at the bottom of the local pond you will have to read to find out.
And if you can steal a car twice, you can certainly steal a car three times. When Jen calls in a panic, Kelleigh doesn't hesitate to borrow the neighbor's car (they were conveniently on vacation) and rescue her best friend. The whole police chase on the way home doesn't help matters, but Kelleigh manages to evade the cops and inform her parents about the declining nature of their neighborhood.
And if you can steal a car three times, why not start stealing cars for money? It's all been leading up to this: her parents' failing marriage, her strained friendship with Jen, and the uncertain future between her and Will. Some girls might act out by drinking, sleeping around, or doing drugs, but Kelleigh gets her thrills from stealing cars. Is she going too far? And what will it take to stop her before she hits the point of no return?
Most people think of car thieves as reckless, desperate, or down on their luck. Kelleigh, though, is an extremely relatable teenage girl with the same teenage problems that we all go through at some point, but she chooses to deal with them in her own unique way. The author's reasoning for why Kelleigh would steal cars not only makes sense, but he makes it seems so easy and practical that it may be a little dangerous for those already teetering on the edge. With HOW TO STEAL A CAR, National Book Award winner Pete Hautman has created another hilarious look at teenagers, and I know that I'm going to double-check where I put my car keys the next time I leave the mall.

Friendship Bread: A Novel ReviewMaybe more recipes or more book... but like a bag passed day 10 of friendship bread, this book exploded with friendship and love. We have 5 main women that we visit throughout the book; I won't go into all the details. You will just HAVE to pick the book up and read for yourself. It is all woven together so beautifully that I was left speechless at the end, couldn't have asked for anything better. Now that is how it is supposed to be done!
What brings it all together? A bag of fermenting starter of amish friendship bread and recipes. If you will, it kind of serves like a glue or bonding agent as well. Anyone can take care of it for the 10 days, and it is easy to put together to bake and separate as well. Fun to give to others too!
I think the recipes I have seen sound delicious too!! What really entices me are the caramel ones! Who knew! When I went to my daughter's ortho appointment, I was telling them about the book, so I KNOW there are at least five more people picking it up.. hehehe

Night Road ReviewI thought the author's writing style was very descriptive and vivid. Her tone was conversational and engaging.
Night Road introduces us to a young woman named Alexa "Lexi" Baill, who was a product of a heroin addicted mother. She was in and out of various foster homes until a great-aunt named Eva Lange came to claim her. I knew this book would leave me in tears when Lexi met her great-aunt for the first time and said "If you keep me, you won't regret. I swear it." I knew then that this young woman was going to captivate me.
After four days in her new home in Port George, Washington, she makes her first friend Mia Farraday, an outcast, like herself. Mia was the twin sister of Zach Farraday, a popular jock who dragged Mia along in order to try to help her fit in. Soon the three of them become a packaged deal of sorts, going everywhere together, and sleepovers at the Farradays etc.
Jude Farraday became the mother that Alexa always wanted, but never had. Jude Farraday was slightly neurotic when it came to parenting. She insisted on walking her high school kids to their lockers, checking home work, chaperoning all school dances etc.
This book weaves a story about teenagers pushing boundaries, learning responsibilities, making choices and living with the consequences of those choices. It was heart wrenching when I realized that they were going to drive home drunk that fateful night. I knew the consequences would be quite severe and it was.
I loved the easy friendship between Mia and Lexi--the way they accepted each other after experiencing so many rejections in life. I loved how Zach and Lexi fell in love and how Mia ultimately accepted their love. I also loved how hard Zach worked at protecting Mia in all things. This book is about relationships with siblings, parents, and lovers. It reminds me that sometimes in life one bad decision can completely alter the path of your future. Drinking and Driving is always a bad choice, but forgiveness can be a healing comfort.
The author told a wonderful story about acceptance, love, anger, loss and ultimately forgiveness. I was rooting for everyone. I really think Miles Farraday and Eva Lange and the attorney Scott were the unsung heros in this book. I don't want to give it all away but they were the supporting cast that held the primary characters together.
