The Authenticator ReviewJust when you thought it couldn't be done, William M. Valtosintroduces a PI with a real difference. Laura died in surgery after the fiery car wreck which killed her husband. But 120 minutes later, she woke up in the hospital morgue.
Theo, a former insurance investigator, fighting failure in his personal and professional life, investigates near-death experiences. Laura's amazingly detailed story justifies the risks he has taken breaking into the clinic. No one has ever brought back such lucid particulars from the other side. Of course, such textbook confirmation also raises suspicions. And Laura claims her husband is still alive which is simply impossible. One thing is clear. Laura is terrified of something and it's not death.
Mild and tentative, Theo's determination is stoked by a savage beating. A tense and macabre rescue of Laura leads to love, mayhem and murder. But action and nail-biting suspense is as nothing compared to a revelation half way through the narrative that will leave the most jaded reader gasping in horror.

Return to Daemon Hall: Evil Roots ReviewToo many YA horror novels get bogged down in romance and teen angst. Not this one. This was a great spooky read with solid scary material appropriate for teen readers. There was no gore, no inappropriateness, and yet it is a story that held enough scariness to haunt me after finishing the book. In a small coastal town, Travis Parker has almost everything he could wish. He loves his job, he gets to hang with long-time friends, and he enjoys water sports, motorcycling, and travel. All in all, it's a good life.
Everything he knows is thrown off-kilter when he meets his new neighbor, Gabby Holland, who happens to be in a relationship with another man. For her part, Gabby is excited, scared, and confused by the things she feels around Travis. She's been dedicated to her golf-crazy boyfriend for a long while, but Travis makes her feel new things. At some point, she'll have to make a decision.
Famous for his take on the sensitive hero and tender love, Nicholas Sparks latest offering is THE CHOICE, in which unexpected feelings lead to unexpected things. As the fun-loving guy with a big heart, Travis is easy to like from the beginning. Gabby, on the other hand, is a very mixed bag.
On the surface, Gabby seems to be kind hearted, but she comes across as someone who is easily upset, has doormat tendencies, and can't quite control her emotions. Travis sees her as sweet and having a great sense of humor. Readers are likely to see her as lacking a sense of humor until later, and even then it's sketchy. Characters are supposed to grow throughout a story, and Gabby does, but her introduction makes it difficult to sympathize with her from the beginning, especially in regards to her relationship with family and, well, her steady boyfriend.
A tragedy in the last hundred pages of the novel almost redeems all that went before. It's hinted at in the prologue, but Sparks elects to play a trick on the read, leading them to expect something quite different from what actually happens. It'd difficult to explain without giving it away, other than to say that it straddles the fence of cheap versus clever.
THE CHOICE is an average read for an average day. Sparks fans are likely to feel a bit let down, but there are far worse things a person could read.

You Are Here ReviewReasons I loved this book:
1. Factoids. Like do you know where we get "OK" from?
2. I loved Emma, the female protagonist. She's spunky, fun, adventurous, and unapologetically moody.
3. Peter really won me over! At first I, much like Emma, kind of dismissed Peter, the map-loving male protagonist, but he wormed his way into my heart!
4. The Maps. I've always loved to travel, but for some reason I never considered the maps, and what they represent, and how interesting they really can be.
5. There's no big twist, no crazy surprise, but the ending really snuck up on me and made a huge impression. I keep thinking about it, and inevitably rereading it, not because it's shocking or unexpected, but because its so heartfelt and true.
This book really struck a chord with me; all throughout, I kept thinking that not all who wander are lost and that despite the fact that I can't always find my way, the journey is the most important part.You Are Here Overview

Love and War in California: A Novel ReviewPerhaps the best thing about Oakley Hall's latest novel Love & War in California is how clearly he brings to the page the passage from sheltered youth to experience. The action begins just after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Payton Daltrey is surrounded by college friends, ready to fall in love, and trying to figure out his place in the world, like most people his age. His family has fallen apart, leaving him on his own, working hard at two jobs, losing time for his fraternity, and entranced by a beautiful fellow student, Bonny.
The war that is growing with every week and month, takes his friends and his brother, leaving him to help a friend's pregnant girlfriend, and being in charge of another friend's "working girl." Payton tries to keep hold of all the strings attached to all of his friends as they embark on paths that will inevitably take them away from him. College is that interlude when we are choosing the direction of our lives, or at least direction we can start pursuing.
In 1942 California, the world war pulls Payton, like most of his generation, right out of the straight path of his life. He fights, survives, loses friends and fellow soldiers, and his blissful youth. He gains the maturity he probably would have had in time, though that time might have drawn itself out longer. He goes on to the write novels as he dreamed of doing. Late in life, he is honored for that writing, and finds that life's surprises are unending and always unexpected.
Hall brings to this novel the ability to capture both a 20-year-old's innocence in the brief period between Pearl Harbor and going off to war, and the experiences that same young man will have as he lives through the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of a concentration camp. He shows great compassion for Payton's youth and idealism, never condescending to it, just faithfully rendering life-size and beautiful.

Dan Merchant and Jeff Martin spent months traveling and interviewing a variety of people from all walks of life to get a picture of what the American culture thinks of Christians and of Jesus. What they found will likely offend many Christian readers...not because its untrue or offensive but because it is painful to see what the secular world's image of us really is.
In one of the most powerful chapters of the book Dan takes a page out of Don Miller's (author of Blue Like Jazz) playbook and sets up a confessional booth at Pride NorthWest...not to hear the confessions of the people there but to confess to them his sins and the sins of the church universal as it pertains to our treatment of the homosexual community. Reading that reminded me how much power honest confession and seeking forgiveness has to heal.
This is something that the church has forgotten. We claim we believe 1 John 1:9 and James 5:16 but we don't live as if we do. We hide behind our stained glass walls and we pretend to the world we have it all together. Its no surprise that one of the most commonly occurring answers to the question Dan poised, "Name something Christians are known for?" was "Hypocrisy."
The book is written as a series of collected experiences, much like an anthology of short stories, I liked that I could jump around and read what caught my attention and not lose the thread of the story. I can't wait to see the full version of the documentary. I hope Dan succeeds in sparking the conversations he hopes to...the Church needs to have them and this book is a great starting point.Lord, Save Us From Your Followers: Why is the Gospel of Love Dividing America Overview

Heartwood: A Novel ReviewFamily matriarch Iris Stern feels she has had a happy marriage and a great late career as a college professor. When her husband Theo suffers a massive heart attack, Iris knows she loves her spouse and her adult children, but the needs of her kids are not hers and their decisions are definitely not hers.
In California Robby McAllister loses his college teaching job due to cutbacks. He and his wife Laura, Iris' daughter returns to New York to be near her family. As he fails to land a position, she thrives with a fixer upper Victorian and a catering business. An upset Robby flees to his family home and store in Ohio, but Laura remains in New York with their daughter and meets Nick. Iris has her own issues with an ethical question of what is right in accordance with her deep Jewish faith vs. what Theo desires as well as how to handle a secret he concealed from her.
The late Belva Plain takes her readers back to where it all began with Evergreen as she provides a profound look at the Stern family. The cast is strong, but remains true to their personalities yet the character driven story line can stand alone. Ms. Plain, who died in October, pays homage to herself with a depth few authors ever achieve.

Bitter End ReviewI picked up Bitter End with no clue about it's theme or story, I just knew that I loved Jennifer Brown's previous novel Hate List so much that this one had to be good. It did not disappoint. Bitter End is the tale of a young girl named Alex who falls in love with Cole, the new boy at school. The story of their relationship is filled with violence, guilt, despair and even love. It's a powerful novel that I wish I could make every young girl read before they start dating. There are valuable lessons to be learned here as the author takes an almost textbook look at the characteristics of an abusive relationship.
Alex is a well rounded character, and even though she comes from a troubled family, the author has taken great pains to establish her as a fairly typical teen. Her two best friends play an important role in the story, and serve to point out that even though Alex has a support system in her life, she still falls into some pretty common traps. Any teen reader will easily be able to see a bit of themselves in these characters. It will perhaps make them uncomfortable as it will cause many to re-think their attitudes of "this could never happen to me".
If I have any complaint about this novel, it's that it gets off to a rather slow start as the author works to establish her characters. It took me a while to get to know Alex, and I really didn't understand some of her feelings concerning her mom and dad until pretty much the end of the book.
In sum, this is an important story that succeeds in dealing with the issue of domestic violence in a way that places it firmly in a realistic teen universe. Alex is a great character, and her struggles are heartbreaking and honest. The story is never heavy handed simply because of Alex's strong, authentic narrative voice. We get a ringside seat here to witness a catastrophic relationship and Brown lets us follow it unflinchingly to the bitter end. Recommended.

The Hidden (The Hollow, Book 3) ReviewThis book was amazing and I LOVED reading how the whole trilogy just comes together. All of my questions were answered and all the pieces to the puzzle fit together perfectly.
I do believe that this was the best book in this series. FINALLY!!! It was time for Caspian's death day and we got to see how Abbey & Caspian had spent their time together. Ooooh La La:) I was so happy about this that it made me have butterflies in my stomach. It was achingly beautiful!
All secrets are revealed by the end of this book and I would have never guessed on any of them. I was happy with the ending, although, it was a little sad, I was still happy with it.
"You," he whispered, bringing his hand to hover by my cheek.
"Are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen."
And then he touched me.

Most Important Year in a Woman's Life, The/The Most Important Year in a Man's Life ReviewBoth my husband and I of 4 months are reading "The Most Important Year in a Woman's/Man's Life", and we are thoroughly impressed with it so far!
My husband really liked how his "side"of the book started out with topics of sports, and money...he says that immediately grabbed his attention.
Now my "side", Susan Devries and Bobble Wolgemuth writing style really appealed to the emotional aspect of marriage...the expectations prior to marraige, and the reality of life after marraige. I appreciate their ability to effectively communicate women's emotion in writing, which is not easy to do! I believe the lady authors do a superb job at capturing the emotions and lending that support for the female during the 1st year of marraige.
The book also speaks on topics such as sex from both the male and female perspective...So the female authors explain what sex is like for the men-and the importance of making love with your husband, and the male authors explain sex to the men using a baseball analogy (first base, second base, third base, and home) to ensure they comprehend how to make love to your wife.
There is also the middle section, "Meet in the middle" with activities/review material for the husband and wife to complete together once they have each read their portion.
This is a very creative book! 2-in-1! I have never seen that!

In Richard Paul Evans latest novel, a man witnesses a series of miracles performed by a young, terminally ill boy, and learns lessons in love and giving. Nathan Hurst doesn't realize what is missing in his life, but upon the start of this new relationship, Nathan makes some changes in his own life and also learns the lesson of forgiveness.
Nathan works for a retail store in which he is to prevent and catch employees who are stealing from the company, in particular, merchandise. During one of his business trips visiting one of the stores, he encounters a boy and his family while waiting at the airport on a very snowy night. This young boy is terminally ill, but Nathan discovers a gift that this young boy has. It's a type of gift that is kept secret, because once it is known, the boy's mother knows that the media will be on their backs, as will the rest of the world. For the sake of the boy's health, his mother tries her best to hide this special gift from the public.
Nathan gets involved with the woman and her two children by volunteering his hotel room for the night, as their flight has been cancelled due to the snowstorm. This act of kindness leads to one thing and another, and soon he has fallen in love with the woman, as he also learns lessons in unselfish love from the young boy.
THE GIFT is the type of book geared toward the holidays, a story filled with miracles. It's an emotional story, so be sure to have a box of Kleenex by your side! Readers who enjoy reading books by Mitch Albom will love THE GIFT.The Gift: A Novel Overview

The Long-Shining Waters ReviewLong Shining Waters is a lyric but dark book. Sosin is a beautiful writer, a poet really, and her book is worth reading if simply to savor her use of language.Sosin's Lake Superior is a dangerous neighbor, driving two of her main characters to the edge of sanity and beyond. The Ojibwa woman's story is powerful and stays with me, as does that of the fisherman's wife. The least memorable, save that it takes place near Schroeder where I live A View of the Lake, is that of the bar owner. There is a fourth and very strange voice in the book and one is never quite certain who or what it is.
