Are You There, Vodka It's Me, Chelsea ReviewI actually bought this book for my wife, since she had enjoyed Chelsea Handler's previous book, "My Horizontal Life." When the book arrived yesterday, I picked it up to peruse it and I couldn't put it down. This book is laugh-out-loud funny. The book contains stories from the author's life from around the age of 9 through adulthood that are funny from the perspective of men and women alike. As should be clear from the title, this book isn't for kids and the content can be pretty racy. If you aren't easily offended, however, it will probably be the most humorous book you read this year. I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could.Are You There, Vodka It's Me, Chelsea Overview

Passionate Uprisings: Iran's Sexual Revolution ReviewPassionate Uprisings is a surprisingly informative book even for those who have kept up with social trends in contemporary Iran. Its most revealing message is that a large segment of Tehran's population has committed itself to a sexual revolution that packs a political punch.
The phrase "sexual revolution" will, for many Americans, conjure up images of the 1960s counter culture also famous for politically relevant sexual transformations. But given the fundamental differences between 21st century Tehran and 1960s America, this comparison will conceal as much as it reveals.
Something very few Americans ever faced was the prospect of incarceration and a brutal whipping for a sexual transgression. Furthermore, when Iran's conservative government-backed morality police are in high gear, "sexual transgression" can include such modest actions as wearing lipstick or letting one's hair slip out from under one's head covering. As these references to lipstick and errant locks of hair imply, Iranian women are more vulnerable than are men to assaults by the morality police, but both genders are subject to beatings and imprisonment for supposedly provocative behavior.
Even more astonishing than the ruthlessness of the authorities is the courage of the Iranians, particularly young Iranians, as they organize their sexually charged basement parties and gather in public places to flirt with outrageously straightforward intent. And for many of them, these acts of defiance are not only exciting for their own sake, they are also intentionally political.
Iranian-American author Pardis Mahdavi had more access to the relatively prosperous northern Tehranis than to Iranians of the relatively poor southern slums, and she is forthright in pointing out this aspect of her research. Being an anthropologist, she relied heavily on participant observation while she lived -- on and off over a period of seven years -- among middle and upper class Iranians. She supplemented the data she gathered in this way with scores of interviews with social workers, doctors, public health providers, and other Iranians representing a variety of ages and social statuses.
The material provided in this book covers not only attitudes toward premarital and extramarital sex, but also such rarely investigated topics as the motivations behind the use (or non-use) of condoms and young Iranians' understandings of HIV and other STIs. Passionate Uprisings is a treasure trove of information on current trends in Iranian society. It also has the added benefit of painting a very human picture of the people of Iran -- a welcome feature in light of the tendency of some media sources to demonize this fascinating country.Passionate Uprisings: Iran's Sexual Revolution Overview

Love and War in California: A Novel ReviewPerhaps the best thing about Oakley Hall's latest novel Love & War in California is how clearly he brings to the page the passage from sheltered youth to experience. The action begins just after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Payton Daltrey is surrounded by college friends, ready to fall in love, and trying to figure out his place in the world, like most people his age. His family has fallen apart, leaving him on his own, working hard at two jobs, losing time for his fraternity, and entranced by a beautiful fellow student, Bonny.
The war that is growing with every week and month, takes his friends and his brother, leaving him to help a friend's pregnant girlfriend, and being in charge of another friend's "working girl." Payton tries to keep hold of all the strings attached to all of his friends as they embark on paths that will inevitably take them away from him. College is that interlude when we are choosing the direction of our lives, or at least direction we can start pursuing.
In 1942 California, the world war pulls Payton, like most of his generation, right out of the straight path of his life. He fights, survives, loses friends and fellow soldiers, and his blissful youth. He gains the maturity he probably would have had in time, though that time might have drawn itself out longer. He goes on to the write novels as he dreamed of doing. Late in life, he is honored for that writing, and finds that life's surprises are unending and always unexpected.
Hall brings to this novel the ability to capture both a 20-year-old's innocence in the brief period between Pearl Harbor and going off to war, and the experiences that same young man will have as he lives through the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of a concentration camp. He shows great compassion for Payton's youth and idealism, never condescending to it, just faithfully rendering life-size and beautiful.

My Boyfriend Wrote a Book About Me: And Other Stories I Shouldn't Share with Acquaintances, Coworkers, Taxi drivers, Assistants, Job Interviewers, ... and Ex/Current/Future Boyfriends but Have ReviewOk. Wow. Just finished this.
I wrote some sexist crap as a reply to somebody else's comment on this book which I now regret. I had only just started the book. I don't know why I wrote that, probably because I was a little embarrassed that I bought a book clearly not for my demographic. I was slightly hesitant to read it in public. The first sixty five pages were somewhat interesting but I thought they were a little sentimental and the jokes were affected and sitcom-y. I was somewhat amused to realize that I had already read the book that her ex wrote.
Part three and onwards completely shut me up. That's where the arc of her romantic life really gets interesting. From there to the end of the book, I can't recommend it enough, and the fluff at the beginning is the only reason I wouldn't give this book a full five stars.
It feels a little cheap to describe the final chapters with words like, "intelligent, witty, hilarious"; don't get me wrong, they ARE very darkly funny and smart, but those are words to describe sitcoms or people that you're trying to set up on blind dates. The cute little one liners melt away as the book progresses. At the end, I felt like the emotional anatomy inside my head had shifted. I began to reevaluate all the "crazy" girls I've dated in my life. I felt guilt at certain anecdotes that I've made out of them. I closed the book and looked at the cover and no longer saw a picture of a cutesy nutcase that just can't get her dating life together; I saw the thousand yard stare of a grizzled veteran of the dating wars. I felt like the woman on the cover was staring right through me and all my bullcrap.
