A Christmas Blizzard ReviewChristmas novels are always nice to read, however this one of Garrison Keillor's is a bit different from what you might expect. It is not the sweet stories of the PBS show Prairie Home Companion, especially when you read in the first 2 pages that Mr. Sparrow, the main character, hates Christmas - the red-green monster - the world's longest and unhappiest holiday with the sheer horror of `The Little Drummer Boy'.
This story contains a lot of Midwestern guilt and woe, but yet its' little continual gems of exaggeration keep the humor alive: " it wasn't like her to fall apart like that, she being a member of the National rifle Association".
James Sparrow needs to learn to love Christmas, as his wife Joyce does and also get over his fear of freezing his tongue to pump handles- their siren call where he has to force himself to keep his tongue in his mouth and not on car door handles or bronze busts of Studs Terkel. His past contains among other problems; a mother who was obsessed by worries of the Christmas tree catching fire. James flies home to Looseleaf, North Dakota where he encounters his past in the form of a dead friend who is now a wolf. A big haired airline ticket lady, a cousin who is plotting to overthrow the US government and is married to an undercover FBI agent who has married her to keep an eye on her.
Through all the humorous absurdities James is rescued from his fears, the blizzard, potential arrest, learns to love Christmas, but most of all discovers the moral of the story: that small kindnesses can create great good...as good a moral as any for a Christmas book

Lean Mean Thirteen: A Stephanie Plum Novel ReviewAccident prone Bounty Hunter, Stephanie Plum, is the number one suspect in her ex-husband's disappearance; mainly because she attacked him in his office, again. While helping Ranger search for Dickie (the ex) she has three 'skips' to find for the bond office. Lula is along for the ride when the usual zany antics 'explode' and make the fugitive apprehensions, less than smooth.
I titled this review as Status Quo, because nothing really happens. There is no character development; same old, same old. While looking for the ex had the potential to be really comical and a different spin on the Plum series, the few laughs I had in this book were all similar to the laughs I have had in the previous books; nothing terribly original.
As far as the Ranger, Stephanie and Morelli love triangle, while I once enjoyed this part of the series, it is getting a little old. How long will Stephanie continue to make out with Ranger while professing her love to Joe? This dishonesty is really bothering me.
With the previous books in the series, I flew through them in a day, pausing only to dry my eyes when my laughing had watered them. With this book it took me a couple of days of reading, I could set it down and pick it up, not really worrying about what was going to happen next. I think something's got to give in the next book, something to shake things up and get this series back on track. It's a good read, but far from the great read I am used to in this series.

The Lobster War ReviewThe book was fantastic and I applaud the author's first work. Howland conveys location, emotion and situation with fantastic clarity. The story moves along pausing only to allow the reader to take in the imagery of the Maine coast and the mixed and conflicting emotions that people face in life. It is too bad that books like this have to be classified as "juvenile fiction" because the writing is much better than many young readers may appreciate. Beautifully written. Interesting story. Nice lesson in life. The Lobster War Overview

Pieces of Eight ReviewHave you ever just laughed so hard you hurt? This is the most heartwarming, memory invoking, hilarious book I've ever read. Seriously, I'm just over half-way through and I'm falling in love with the Maggio family, "each and every one of you". I was out on the patio last night laughing out loud while reading passages to my husband when my neighbor yelled over the fence, "You must be reading 'Pieces of Eight' again! Are you almost done? I can't wait to read it!" She's going to have to wait because I am savoring every chapter and e-mail share. These siblings have a deep and playful understanding of one another and can teach us all a thing or two about caring, having fun and laughing at ourselves.
I guarantee it will make you laugh and it will make you cry. You may even learn a new language ..."Maggio-speak". Even if you don't learn it you will remember a few one-liners. Did I say I loved this book? I did. Thanks, Maggios for taking us on your trip down memory lane. Boy, do you have good memories!
This review was a work in progress, I have now (sadly)finished the book but I may have to reread it just for the 'laugh' of it.Pieces of Eight Overview

Savvy ReviewThe Beaumonts are a unique family made up truly talented individuals. As each kid hits the age of thirteen, his or her inherent power comes to light. They call this talent "savvy," and it can be anything. When a Beaumont celebrates that fateful, lucky thirteen, everyone waits with baited breath to see what happens. No matter what, a savvy is one birthday gift you can't return.
They don't know exactly where it comes from, but they do know that it runs down Momma's side of the family. Daddy's a regular guy, happy with his family and content with his job. Meanwhile, Momma's relatives can do all sorts of wacky things. Great-Aunt Jules would step back twenty minutes in time every time she sneezed. Olive, a second cousin, has the ability to melt ice with her glare. Grandpa Bomba creates new places "whenever and wherever" he pleases, such as the stretch of land stuck between Kansas and Nebraska where he lives with his daughter and their family. (They call it Kansaska or Nebransas.) His wife caught radio waves in old glass jars, saving snippets of songs and stories that she could tune into anytime. Now that she's passed away, the family is extremely careful with these containers and treasures the sounds they emit upon a gentle loosening of their lids.
Then there's the immediately family. Momma's perfect, always - that's her savvy. Oldest child Rocket, aged seventeen, is the body electric, able to illuminate rooms during a blackout or teasingly zap a sibling whenever he feels like it. Weather shakes the next oldest boy, fourteen-year-old Fish, whose emotional hurricane can manifest into a real storm. The youngest kids, somber seven-year-old Samson and imaginative three-year-old Gypsy, are years away from getting their savvies, but when the story opens, middle child Mississippi is about to turn thirteen.
Affectionately called Mibs by her family, a nickname created by Gypsy in an attempt to pronounce her sister's name, our beloved narrator is appropriately awkward for her age and anxious for her birthday. She knows something's coming, something good.
Then something bad happens. The night before her birthday, Mibs' father is in a car accident and taken to a hospital. Momma and Rocket rush off to tend to him, leaving the other children in the care of Grandpa Bomba. Instead of having a happy birthday at home, Mibs finds herself at a gathering planned by the pastor's wife, Miss Rosemary. Mibs and her siblings, already worried about their father, now worry that Mibs' savvy will make itself known in public.
When the birthday girl discovers that a Bible salesman's bus came from the direction of the hospital where her father is resting, she impulsively sneaks on board. The stowaway count increases when Fish and Samson decide to get on the bus, as do the pastor's offspring, defiant Bobbi (who has a crush on Rocket) and gentle Will Junior (who has a crush on Mibs).
The salesman starts down the road, oblivious to his new cargo, and Mibs goes from excited to scared in the blink of an eye. They're heading in the opposite direction, away from the hospital rather than towards it! Her savvy, which had presented itself only a short while before, starts playing with her mind, but she tries to keep it a secret.
Mibs looks around and realizes that she's on an unplanned road trip to who-knows-where with two of her brothers, one of whom barely speaks, a meek salesman named Lester that she doesn't know, and the pastor's kids. As unpredictable and unprecedented as the trip may be, one thing's for certain: Mibs will never forget her thirteenth birthday.
Ingrid Law infuses her sweet family-oriented story with mischief, creating a special effect. Whether or not they have special powers, each character is easily distinguishable from the others, including the grown-ups. It's almost as if the kids from the Maggie Valley books by Kerry Madden (Gentle's Holler, etc) were given the powers of the X-Men. The fact that the Beaumonts gain their powers at the age of thirteen is a perfect nod to their coming-of-age, and this book is a treat for all ages.
Savvy is, from start to finish, a delightful journey. This rite of passage is highly recommended.Savvy Overview

Dear George Clooney: Please Marry My Mom ReviewFrom the lighthearted title, this reader expected Violet's story to have plenty of moments of humor, and the author does not disappoint. Violet's Hollywood dad left her mom for a starlet, and she and her younger sister now have two step-sisters, a less-glamourous lifestyle (in Canada), and Violet has a plot to get her mother out of the rut of dating weirdos, and on to something better. I'm glad to say that in the end, Violet realizes there is a benefit to substance over style, and George Clooney (as much as Violet ever gets to know him) turns out to be a great guy.
NOTE FOR PARENTS ON WHY 4 STARS: I guess I'm keeping my head in the sand about what tweens are up to, as the 12 year olds in this story are indulging in "retail therapy", Facebook pages, hearing about their parents' flirtations and affairs and inviting each other to school dances. I wish Violet had been 13 or 14, but that's just me. Violet plays a mean joke on her stepsisters that didn't come off as funny to me.Dear George Clooney: Please Marry My Mom Overview

Are You There, Vodka It's Me, Chelsea ReviewI actually bought this book for my wife, since she had enjoyed Chelsea Handler's previous book, "My Horizontal Life." When the book arrived yesterday, I picked it up to peruse it and I couldn't put it down. This book is laugh-out-loud funny. The book contains stories from the author's life from around the age of 9 through adulthood that are funny from the perspective of men and women alike. As should be clear from the title, this book isn't for kids and the content can be pretty racy. If you aren't easily offended, however, it will probably be the most humorous book you read this year. I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could. Are You There, Vodka It's Me, Chelsea Overview

Dead Center ReviewIn David Rosenfelt's "Dead Center," Andy Carpenter and his beloved dog, Tara, leave their comfort zone in Paterson, New Jersey to spend time in Findlay, Wisconsin. Andy has been licking his wounds after the love of his life, Laurie Collins, dumped him to return to her hometown of Findlay, where she has become Acting Chief of Police. For the last few months, Andy has been hanging out with Tara, appearing on cable television as a legal expert, and spending time at a dog rescue operation that he runs with his partner, Willie. He also loves to socialize with his immature friends at a sports bar, sit on his couch and watch any game that happens to be on, and place the occasional bet with his bookie. In short, he has a rather pathetic and predictable life.
Laurie changes all that when she asks Andy to come to Wisconsin to defend Jeremy Davidson, a young man accused of brutally slaying two coeds. Although Laurie is technically on the side of the prosecution, she is convinced that Jeremy is innocent. After much soul-searching, Andy agrees to take the case.
David Rosenfelt has a reputation for seamlessly combining hilarious and sarcastic humor with engrossing mysteries. Andy is an appealing protagonist and narrator, a self-deprecating nebbish, and a compassionate and quick-witted criminal defense attorney. He is New Jersey's answer to William Bernhardt's Tulsa-based Ben Kincaid. Since Andy and Laurie make such a perfect couple, the reader roots for them to rekindle their romance.
The plot revolves around a town that is inhabited by a religious cult whose leader discourages dissent. Is it possible that the members of this cult would resort to violence to protect their secrets? After Andy's arrival in Wisconsin, there are additional unexplained deaths and a suicide that may have been staged. Andy uses his considerable legal expertise to try to exonerate Jeremy, and he also plays amateur sleuth. Along with his inarticulate but effective bodyguard, the formidable Marcus Clark, our hero lays his life on the line to solve the puzzle before any more corpses pile up. "Dead Center" is a mildly entertaining book with the usual red herrings and surprises, but it has a forced, "been there, done that" feel; it lacks the flavor, bite, and originality that made Rosenfelt's earlier novels such a delight.Dead Center Overview

How I, Nicky Flynn, Finally Get a Life (and a Dog) ReviewHow I, Nicky Flynn Amulet Books, 2010, 272 pgs., [...]
Art Corriveau ISBN 0810982986
Have you ever known anybody with a guide dog? Well Nicky Flynn is the owner of a former guide dog Reggie. Nicky is an eleven-year old boy. Nicky lives with his mom in Boston, MA. Nicky's parents are divorced and they got a divorce over a [...] bottle of French mustard. It sounds crazy, right? Nicky's dad never spends time with him it's a different excuse every weekend.
When Nicky's mom brings Reggie home from the shelter Nicky goes ballistic. His mom says "You have always wanted a dog and now you have one." Nicky's parents are divorced and every time Nicky has plans with his dad his dad cancels. One night when Reggie attacks Nicky's mom she says "I will be getting animal control out here tomorrow morning." That is the night of the great escape. It takes one mistake to miss up you whole life. Reggie didn't attack Nicky's mom for no reason. She was going to give Nicky a high-5 and Reggie doesn't like it when someone puts their hand up to Nicky. Nicky and Reggie go on a journey they won't forget.
I love the way Art Corriveau writes this book. He does different headings instead of chapters like Wednesday night, the Holke's office. Art writes in great detail and is an amazing author. Art gives many details about the plot, setting, and characters.
I was shocked while reading How I (Nicky Flynn) Finally get a Life (and a dog). There are many twists and turns in this crazy book. It is breathe taking and an adventure of a lifetime

Twenty Minutes in Manhattan ReviewMichael Sorkin has written the best book on architecture and cities I have read in thirty years.
The groaning tables of books on architecture and its vulgar opposite, real estate, have been near collapse from useless piles of theories, career promotions, trashing old houses, freezing relics, flipping toxic properties, making tidy fortunes by deceiving yearning home buyers, and most of all boosting the pathetic dreams of new urbanists out to out-do Disneyesque fantasists.
Sorkin shows that cities are far better than they have been made out to be by defilers of the landscape who want to ruin them in order to sell new, improved cleansing soapsuds.
By walking daily from his home to studio along a small chunk of lower Manhattan, historicized Greenwich Village to tonified Tribeca, Sorkin has gestated thousands of eye-widening insights about what works in cities and what doesn't.
He gives little credit to aggressive professional planners in thrall to rich developers, instead he bestows awards on street entrepreneurs and neighborhood believers. He wonderfully and informatively describes details of large failures and small successes in New York City, the United States, Europe, Asia and elsewhere he has traveled to lecture and study -- many sure to start as headshaking before erupting as in belly-laughs.
Incivil discourse -- urban warfare -- gets special attention, the worst and the best, the enduring homicidal threat of infernal vehicles against pedestrians fighting for their lives. The cellphone yakkers, the widebody baby strollers, the second-hand smokers, the Formula 1 jerks in from Jersey, the national security bollards, the the homeland security aggressors, the corporate haters of trees, the venal, cruel, landlords at home and work, the fancy architects without scruple, what else have you always wanted somebody to challenge, ridicule and perfectly plan for extinction.
Sorkin handily provides tips for winning exclusive use of an elevator, what to enjoy in cities no tour guide knows, who to be forever angry at for damaging our habitats, what each of us can do to contribute to -- demand of our elected representatives, designers and educators -- places to live and thrive under our own guidance, free of orchestrated interference by exploiters of cities and their covert lobbyists and financiers.
Get this heart-warming, mind-stretching book, take a hike with Sorkin, dodge insane traffic, dump garbage in front of your landlord's office, pray for rent control to spread around the world.

The Albuquerque Turkey: A Novel ReviewJohn Vorhaus brings his personable, yet criminal, main character--Radar Hoverlander--back for some schemes-gone-wrong in his new release, The Albuquerque Turkey. Readers met con-man radar and his equally lovable and crooked new girlfriend, Allie, in the series debut, The California Roll. Now the pair is back for their toughest challenge yet: a respectable life as crime-free, upstanding citizens. Easier said than done for these two.
Add in a grifter patriarch, an old nemesis, and a couple of eccentric artsy friends on the make for fame and glory, and pretty soon it's impossible to tell who's double crossing whom.
Radar's a charming, affable narrator and I really enjoyed his quirky supporting cast, both the good guys and the bad. (Probably because much of the time I couldn't be sure of the difference.) Twists in the story are frequent and amusing. This is a great choice for those looking for fast thrills and a break from predictable PG humor.
I almost never laugh out loud while reading, but The Albuquerque Turkey got me more than once. Thumbs up.The Albuquerque Turkey: A Novel Overview

Jail Bertie and the Peanut Ladies (Sweet Meadow Series #3) ReviewIn Sweet Meadow, Georgia, tow truck driver and mechanic Roberta "Bertie Byrd" Fortney prefers the town council cut the tree down that blocks vision at the Oak and Haverford intersection, but takes action when they don't; she is arrested for tree cutting without a license. Avoiding the anger of the tree-huggers she wants a traffic light installed at that intersection that has kept her busy with accidents. However, she is willing to settle for asking for an automated counter to validate her case that a light is needed. However, there is no money unless the town council reprograms funding from their Christmas party, which is heresy. Instead they order Bertie to tally the traffic and provide a report of her findings to them. Stunned by their lack of priorities, Bertie and council member Bob Bord heatedly argue her request until he dies of a heart attack, leaving an opening on the council.
Bertie runs for the vacancy against Booger Bailey and his renowned barking goats making her chances of winning doubtful as everyone knows not to compete against animal stars. It is virtually impossible for her to gain the seat that most people believe her tirade opened up, her opponent has incredible financial backing from a mysterious "redneck mafia" benefactor while she runs her campaign on peanuts.
Bertie is at her delightful best as she tries to do what she believes is right for her town. Although the lighthearted story line amusingly focuses on small town living in rural Georgia where a debate over a traffic light can become extremely heated and lethal, Bertie owns the tale. Readers will appreciate Bertie's latest antics and escapades as she drives everyone around her to distraction in her latest romp (see BIG HAIR AND FLYING COWS).

Welcome to the Departure Lounge: Adventures in Mothering Mother ReviewMeg Federico's Welcome to the Departure Lounge is a poignant, hilarious, beautifully written and invaluable book.
It tells the story of a mother's decline and eventual death, and a daughter's determined effort to make this difficult process as dignified and decent as possible. As her mother lapses further into dementia, and her household (consisting of an Alheimers-afflicted husband and an assortment of mostly well-meaning relatives, friends and care-givers) falls into chaos, Ms. Federico struggles to bring sanity to the situation. But she finds she has to make more personal sacrifices and to deal with more bizarre situations than she had anticipated. And she must also find a way to resolve the conflicts in her difficult relationship with her mother.
Ms. Federico accomplishes the difficult task of telling this story in a way that recognizes the outlandish humor in the frustrations that constantly arise, even as she gives full weight to the underlying heartbreak, sorrow and loss. She gives us a true affirmation of the process of living with all its tenderness, pain, giddy humor, sacrifice, indignity, exuberance, sadness, and inevitable loss.
For anyone who has ever been involved in tending to an aging parent, this book will strike many (and not all painful) familiar chords. And for anyone who is anticipating or currently tending to an aging parent, Welcome to the Departure Lounge will will be an invaluable, funny and wise companion.
It's also a wonderful funny and heartwarming read.Welcome to the Departure Lounge: Adventures in Mothering Mother Overview

Twelve Sharp (Stephanie Plum, No. 12) ReviewIs it funny? Yes.
Does it have a lot of romantic tension? Yes.
Does it have a good villain? Yes.
Is the mystery interesting? Yes.
Are the characters still fun? Yes.
What more do you want out of a summer beach book?
I've heard some reviewers bemoan Ms. Plum's lack of dynamic character development throughout the series. They would like to see Stephanie grow, or change, or mature, or develop, or choose between Ranger and Joe, or become a monk and move to Tibet, or join the Galactic Alliance and fight the Mucus Monsters of Planet Nostril.
I disagree. I think the formula is perfect. It's fun, fast-paced, and always good for some laughs.
You wouldn't ask Walt Disney to make Mickey Mouse more grown-up. Especially since Disney has been dead for several decades.
You shouldn't ask Janet Evanovich to change Stephanie, either. Both Stephanie, and Janet, are perfect the way they are, and I hope they stay that way for many more books.Twelve Sharp (Stephanie Plum, No. 12) Overview

The only place I would not suggest to keep it,is on your night stand. You may wake the person next to you laughing out loud.
All the one liners and gags are grouped by subject. Actors, Baldness, Bankers, Divorce,Ethnic Jokes, Female Anatomy,Life, Politics,Television, Taxes, Weather, you name it, these big guns of comedy don't miss a trick.
This book may not be for everyone, as many of the jokes are crude, some may be considered R rated, and some being from a time when it was okay to laugh at yourself and life without being politically correct. Although none of the lines are intended to be mean spirited. I definately wouldn't keep it around children who can read!
You can almost hear, these legends spouting their stuff. Groucho Marx.."A hospital bed is a parked taxi with the meter running"...Mae West.."I like two kinds of men: domestic and foreign"...Jackie Gleason.."When you leave New York, you're camping out." Joe E. Lewis.."A man is never drunk if he can lay on the floor without holding on" (Those are some of the more tasteful quotes I could give without being edited or offending.)
It is quite a thick book at 496 pages of these priceless quotes and dialouges. There is an index of Humorists, making it easy to find your favorites, and an introduction by Alan King, listing it's most renowned memebers.
Many of the contributors(who some may consider as national treasures) are no longer with us, and this book is a treasure chest of their words. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a good laugh and can appreciate it for what it is.
"For the first year of marriage I had a basically bad attitude. I tended to place my wife underneath a pedestal."...Woody Allen
Badaboom.....enjoy...LaurieThe Friars Club Encyclopedia of Jokes: Over 2,000 One-Liners, Straight Lines, Stories, Gags, Roasts, Ribs, and Put-Downs Overview

A Confederacy Of Dunces ReviewThis is an incredibly funny and intelligent book. I initially borrowed it from the library, but ended up buying copies for friends. Next, I will have to get one for myself. It is a read you will want to read again and again. A Pulitzer Prize winner.A Confederacy Of Dunces Overview

Trailer Trashed: My Dubious Efforts Toward Upward Mobility ReviewHollis has wacky friends, a fascinating life, and wild and embarassing stories that she fortunately does not mind sharing. Her writing style and family stories remind me some of the Sedaris clan and a little of Terry Ryan, the woman who wrote The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio. I enjoy her musings about Grant/Lary/Daniel, faking her way through German translations, hell-fire cats, waiting for the neighborhood prostitute to claim her discarded go-go boots, or spilling the dirt on her sister who owns a bar in Nicaragua. Also, if you get the chance, go see Hollis speak in person - her quick wit will have you guffawing. I saw her with a standing room only crowd and she had 'em belly laughing. (full disclosure: I know and like Hollis. But she's funny, I'm telling you!).Trailer Trashed: My Dubious Efforts Toward Upward Mobility Overview
