How to Get From There to Here ReviewI came across this book after seeing the author, Chef Jay Littmann, on a local Las Vegas TV news program. I was interested in his story immediately. The man has overcome so much during his life and has risen above and truly made it. It's a success story that really relates with many problems out there today. People feel down and out for a number of reasons - no job, no house, addictions, weight gain - whatever it is. This book addresses the same issues that Jay had during his life and shows how to correct mistakes and start over. It's a page turner and an easy read and something that truly inspires. How to Get From There to Here Overview

Everything Will Be All Right ReviewThis is an honest, inspirational story of a man overcoming one of the toughest challenges that modern Americans can face: being born into extreme poverty. Douglas Wallace talks at length about what it was like growing up in what he terms "generational poverty," and how he managed to find his way out through hard work, determination, and, ultimately, faith. It's a story that can put your current problems into perspective, but more than that, it's a testament to the power of character and belief. Like "Slumdog Millionaire," it's an honest, sometimes brutal look at adversity, but its crowning achievement is the message of hope that it offers. I couldn't put it down.Everything Will Be All Right Overview

Trailer Trashed: My Dubious Efforts Toward Upward Mobility ReviewHollis has wacky friends, a fascinating life, and wild and embarassing stories that she fortunately does not mind sharing. Her writing style and family stories remind me some of the Sedaris clan and a little of Terry Ryan, the woman who wrote The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio. I enjoy her musings about Grant/Lary/Daniel, faking her way through German translations, hell-fire cats, waiting for the neighborhood prostitute to claim her discarded go-go boots, or spilling the dirt on her sister who owns a bar in Nicaragua. Also, if you get the chance, go see Hollis speak in person - her quick wit will have you guffawing. I saw her with a standing room only crowd and she had 'em belly laughing. (full disclosure: I know and like Hollis. But she's funny, I'm telling you!).Trailer Trashed: My Dubious Efforts Toward Upward Mobility Overview

Drinking with Miss Dutchie: A Memoir ReviewIt's not a spoiler for me to say that the author has to euthanize his precious black lab, Miss Dutchie, at age 12½, because he tells us himself on the second page of the book. That doesn't make it any easier to read about it, though, when he actually describes the process at the end of the book. In between is a wonderful read, that I couldn't put down.
Knowing the ultimate outcome didn't make this story any less compelling and, in fact, may have made it more so. Breslin does a good job of interweaving the story of Miss Dutchie's life with his struggles with alcoholism (hence, of course, the title ... ) But he really doesn't "drink" with Miss Dutchie; rather, she helps him stop doing just that. To find out how, you just have to read it.
Anyone who thinks this is primarily a "dog story" might be disappointed; it's more a story about the author's middle-aged life and marriage. It reads like a coming-of-age story in some ways, and he is quite open in discussing his struggles, flaws, idiosyncracies, etc. This had me at times either rooting for him or wanting to say "hey ... just grow up and deal with it!" It's almost like reading someone's diary and, actually, much of it was created from Breslin's journal writings.
If you've ever had to euthanize a beloved pet, there are parts of this book that will make you cry out loud; it is very painful in spots. However, anyone who's ever loved a pet will also be nodding in agreement through much of it, as the author describes his deep relationship with Miss Dutchie and how she changed his life.
I was especially happy to find a couple of photo inserts in the book; I always find it helpful when reading non-fiction or memoirs to be able to actually "see" the characters who are central to the story.
I'm a person who looks up any unfamiliar words I encounter while reading. Maybe I was just in "intellectual down time" while reading this, but it seemed I had to do that more often than usual with this book. I was stopped by, for example: contumely; dipsomania; pitons; spalls; termagant ... and (gulp) sententious and casuistry in the same sentence. I'm impressed by the author's knowledge and correct usage of these types of words, but I frankly think it's a bit distracting to encounter so many of them in casual reading, and it's my only real criticism of the book.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book. Stock up on tissues before you read it.

Live Fast, Love Hard: The Faron Young Story (Music in American Life) ReviewThis is one of the best biographies I have ever read about anyone. This book is very well-written, as it portrays Faron Young as a person first. Many biographies about musical artists talk way too much about the music, and not enough about the person. Faron Young's music speaks for itself. However, no one has ever known that much about his life, other than that he was a colorful character who sang country music, used salty language and drank too much. Diekman paints a much more detail picture of an outwardly simple, yet internally very complex man. As you read this book, you will feel the tremendous highs and lows that Young went through in his happy yet often painful life. You will also feel the alternating sense of fun and nervous tension that friends and family felt around him. Once I started reading this book, I could not stop. And while I like Faron Young music, I am not what one would consider to be a die-hard fan. This book took me back through Young's life, as well as the lives of those around him. It is also sad to see how such a super talent died so sad and bitter. But after reading this terrific book, I understand why he died as he did. I have read thousands of bios on everyone from John Adams to Patsy Cline. This is definitely in the top three. It is simply WONDERFUL................It reads great, and paints such a illustrative picture of a man who, I thought I knew a little about........but after reading this book, I realize how little I really knew! I'm gonna read it again, and then go out and buy some Faron Young music. BRAVO!

FLYING DRUNK: The True Story of a Northwest Airlines Flight, Three Drunk Pilots, and One Man's Fight for Redemption ReviewI read this book through in a couple of nights and it kept my attention as I discovered what this man went through during his childhood and adulthood fighting the disease of alcoholism. He had an incredible memory of what happened to him during his year in federal prison and I was moved several times by his struggles and the struggles of his wife and family during his trial and incarceration. It is an awesome book about a pilot who was raised by an alcoholic father, worked his way through pilot training and just as he was finishing his first year with Northwest Airlines, he made a detrimental decision to step into the cockpit of his plane and fly under the influence of alcohol. He was convicted and served a year in federal prison, fought his way back to a normal life and now has been flying with American Airlines for 10 years. He's now celebrating his 19th year of sobriety. I recommend this book to everyone.

Fat,Forty,Fired: One Man's Frank,Funny, and Inspiring Account of Losing His Job and Finding His Life ReviewI had picked up this book hoping for a funny and inspiring story of someone finding himself after a job loss. Unfortunately, I found Fat, Forty and Fired to be tired and somewhat simplistic. The author came across as overly privileged and frankly, whiny. For example, gosh, he had to fly coach using some of his frequent flyer miles during a trip to Europe! And seats only reclined an inch or two! Plus they had to fire the nanny (although the wife already stayed at home). Yawn.
This is on top of short chapters and a stunning lack of detail.
It was disappointing to see how quickly he went back to some of his old ways at the end of the book. Didn't even make the swim race he had talked about for some fifty pages or so throughout the book.
Even more concerning are the rest of the reviews on Amazon. I find it hard to to see how everyone else gave this book 5 stars. But I see 13 of the 16 other reviewers have only this one review to their name. Nigel's friends and family perhaps?Fat,Forty,Fired: One Man's Frank,Funny, and Inspiring Account of Losing His Job and Finding His Life Overview

Upper Cut: Highlights of My Hollywood Life ReviewThe story spans several colorful decades and Carrie White was in the thick of it. I was moved to tears by her upbringing and charmed by her optimism. She is a colorul writer and you can picture being at the party with her. She also takes you to the bottom. The courage to be that vulnerable about the dark days can only come with enlightenment and this writer has it. I hope she has a novel in her now that she has exorcised the demons. She weaves a great tale.Upper Cut: Highlights of My Hollywood Life Overview

Please Ignore Vera Dietz ReviewI'll keep this short.
I'm a middle-aged man who gave up on YA literature when he was a YA. Which was a long, long time ago.
But PLEASE IGNORE VERA DIETZ is the real deal. No glittery vampires. No baloney. Just real, live people with real, live problems. Like the ones I had when I was a YA myself. And like the ones you might have right now.
It's a book with heart, a book with soul.
It's a book that will endure.
Buy a copy right this minute, and help make sure that that happens. Please Ignore Vera Dietz Overview
