How to Get From There to Here ReviewI came across this book after seeing the author, Chef Jay Littmann, on a local Las Vegas TV news program. I was interested in his story immediately. The man has overcome so much during his life and has risen above and truly made it. It's a success story that really relates with many problems out there today. People feel down and out for a number of reasons - no job, no house, addictions, weight gain - whatever it is. This book addresses the same issues that Jay had during his life and shows how to correct mistakes and start over. It's a page turner and an easy read and something that truly inspires. How to Get From There to Here Overview

The Cure for Money Madness: Break Your Bad Money Habits, Live Without Financial Stress--and Make More Money ReviewWhat gratification to see someone you taught years ago grow into a wise and helpful human being. This book is the product of that growth. Spencer offers a font of advice on how to look into the money madness which grips so many people in this prosperous, yet often self-defeating society in which we live. Through insightful analysis of hidden childhood money patterns and useful exercises Spencer guides the reader into his or her individual "money madness" and suggests how to remedy it. He further teaches how people can invest, free of the pushes and pulls of the get rich quick schemes in books, on radio and TV. I always wondered why people, who want to sell me ideas about how to make a million, bothered. Why waste their time when they could be out making that million rather than trying to get my money? I guess much financial advice is like this. It is too good to be true.
Spencer puts this into perspective by showing how the money madness of both seller and buyer keep them from addressing what is really important in life: living with a sense of ease, living connected to your loved ones, and living so as to contribute to the world. Spencer's goal is to address the ways in which our hidden attitudes toward money keeps us from this deeper satisfaction.
Beginning with an exploration of your destructive patterns, Spencer presents ways they can be healed, particularly in our relationships to others. He suggests how one can save and invest without being driven by emotion (and he does this in very useful detail---something one can act upon at once). He touches on how money madness affects people at work, and how to address it to make one's self more effective. He takes on the myths about house buying (which given the housing bubble burst, makes his advice all the more relevant). He talks about philanthropy, offering ways to do it more awarely.
At a time of money fear, Spencer offers a way for people to see where they truly stand in it all, and how to take action based on a clearer understanding. The subject matter of this book is greatly needed and Spencer has done an excellent job of helping people find their way through a turmoil which may, in fact, be the result of our collective money madness. This is an important book to read.

Topless Prophet: The True Story of America's Most Successful Gentleman's Club Entrepreneur ReviewIf you are a male and reading this, I have a question for you - what would be your ideal fantasy life? How does having a string of 'Gentlemens Clubs' and being surrounded every night by beautiful near-naked dancing ladies, earning millions of pounds/dollars, driving fancy cars, owning your own private jet and racing car sound? If that life sounds too perfect and nobody could be that lucky, then think again and welcome to Alan Markovitz's world! His true story charts how he rose to become America's most successful Gentlemen's Club entrepreneur.
But, believe it or not there are drawbacks, like being shot at not once, but twice, and still having the bullet lodged in your neck between your carotid artery and your jugular vein as the surgeons considered it too risky to remove. Or maybe having your then business partner hiring two hitmen to murder you for your share of the nightclub. Or even having to testify against the Mob!
Early Life
Alan's father was a Holocaust survivor who was liberated from Auschwitz at 16 years and as he says "Maybe that's where I get it from - pluck, perseverance, determinations, balls, a little excess now and then. How else are you going to make it in this business?" His parents wanted him to be a doctor or a lawyer, the typical young-Jewish-guy-does-well-for-himself success story but Alan had other ideas, he saw how his neighbour, Sol Milan, owned a bigger car than his parents and he owned a strip club, and from an early age Alan knew that that was what he wanted.
So, Alan went to Bartender School and, luckily for him, when Sol's regular bartender wanted weekends off he asked Alan to step in, obviously he jumped at the chance and so began his first foray into the world of the 'gentlemens clubs'. When he was just 20 something he bought a run-down strip joint and with Sol as his partner he opened his first club - The Booby Trap - it was a dream come true and he never looked back.
The Shootings
The first person to shoot him was one of his own dancers, a junkie by the name of Susie who he had just fired. She didn't take too kindly to this and came back later the same night and shot her .38 revolver at him, hitting him twice, once in his liver and the other collapsed his lung. She only received two and a half years for attempted murder!
Amazingly, the next bullets were from an off-duty policeman who was apparently not happy at being asked to leave one of Alan's Clubs one January evening in 1997, having consumed too much alcohol and starting an argument with one of the dancers. After leaving he came back and started shooting his .40 caliber Glock and, unfortunately, Alan was in the way of one of his stray bullets. His jaw was shattered in six places, losing several teeth in the process, he had to have six separate surgeries, plastic reconstruction and cost him almost a quarter of a million dollars!
The Hitmen
The FBI was already investigating two thugs for other crimes when they listened in to their phone calls and uncovered a plot to assassinate Alan. Unbeknown to Alan, his business partner, Freddy Giordano, had hired the two hitmen to kill him, and Alan only found out about this while watching the evening news one night when they were arrested. Luckily for Alan they were arrested before they could carry out the hit!My Thoughts
The book takes us behind the scenes of how the business works, the girls who, Alan continually tells us, are not stupid but are doing something they enjoy and which can pay extremely well, his battles with officialdom, the vast sums of money that can be made, all the while saying that anyone with guts and determination can do anything if they want it badly enough.
Alan comes across as a likeable, decent guy, who has made mistakes in his life and admits them honestly, which is one of the things I liked about him. He wasn't flashy or pretentious, just an ordinary person living an extraordinary life. Even though I'm probably not the sort of person the book is aimed at ...... I'm a middle-aged female ....... I would guess the book is mainly aimed at males interested in 'gentlemens clubs' ........ but I really did enjoy it. I know I'll probably never find myself in one of these clubs, but that doesn't matter, I still found it a fascinating look at a different world.
The writing flowed quickly and easily and all the chapters were nicely divided into sections, eg. Tycoons are made not born and The Girls which is self-explanatory.Topless Prophet: The True Story of America's Most Successful Gentleman's Club Entrepreneur Overview

Going Broke: Why Americans Can't Hold On To Their Money ReviewThere are many things this book does well. (In fact, everything this book does, it does well.) First, and most remarkably, it tells stories. Not only is the author brave enough to reveal his own financial foibles, he includes interviews with individuals who have suffered financial ruin and lived to tell the tale. The stories are striking in their variety and poignancy, and they are made all the more salient by Vyse's beautifully written prose. The author paints a clear picture of his subjects' various crises, so that each story--no matter how different it may be from our own--has a sense of familiarity. We understand that these are fellow Americans who for the most part have worked hard and played by the rules, and we can't help recognizing their humanity and vulnerability as our own.
Moving beyond the stories that open each chapter, Vyse looks not only at the internal, "psychological" processes associated with financial difficulty--such as the seemingly inexplicable tendency to overpay for items on eBay--but he also uses a broad lens to examine the social and political forces that conspire against our best efforts to stay ahead in the financial game. Rather than simply attributing the bankruptcy epidemic to "shopaholism" or endemic self-indulgence (as many others blithely do), Vyse weaves together hard science, cultural criticism, and macroeconomic analysis to create a disturbing image of our personal--and national--economic landscape.
Finally, the majority of Vyse's suggestions for not going broke are practical, common-sense solutions that almost every American can employ. But even in presenting his suggestions, Vyse acknowledges that there are larger forces which need to be addressed before a majority of Americans can enjoy financial security. Far from being a panacea, Vyse presents his suggestions as something of a self-defense strategy in a world where our senses and sensibilities are constantly bombarded, and our financial futures are bought and sold by corporations without hesitation or regulation.
I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in human behavior, American culture, economics, politics, or public policy--and to anyone who just wants a good, thought-provoking read.

Thriving in the New Economy: Lessons from Today's Top Business Minds ReviewImagine you're friends with some of the most intellectually stimulating and financially successful people in the world and you invited them all to dinner one night. Imagine they came and took turns sharing their greatest insights into the sources of the financial crisis, where we are today and what the best opportunities are going forward. And finally imagine someone could write it all down and get this salon published as a guide for the rest of us. That's pretty much what you've got in Lori Ann LaRocco's new book, "Thriving in the New Economy." The guests in this salon are definitely the "A List" including Larry Lindsey, Wilbur Ross, Rudy Giuliani, Wayne Huizenga, Bob Doll and many others. And the conversation is lively thanks to LaRocco's guest selection, personal relationships and conversational prompts. Larry Lindey tell us that IQ points and academic achievements are not enough to provide good economic stewardship; you need real world market experience and a feel for what markets are actually telling you. He warns against the dangers of cognitive bias and gives us tips for maintaining an objective, analytic approach free of ideological baggage. The contribution of Wilbur Ross is fascinating. We all know the chronology of the meltdown too well from Bear to Lehman to AIG. Ross goes over this ground not just as a simple chronology but by retracing his mental processes as he first minimized dangers in his own portfolio and then maximized opportunities in seeking gems amid the financial wreckage. We each remember what we thought when we heard about AIG but actually getting inside Ross's head for a play-by-play account of how he alerted the CEO's in his existing portfolio companies to cuts costs, cut investments and lower projections and then pivoted to look at the most beaten down sectors - mortgages, monoline insurance and banks - and systematically pulled diamonds out of the dirt is fascinating. It shows how the smart money got that way and how it stays that way. Paul McCulley of PIMCO takes us inside the "new normal". We've all heard about it but McCulley outlines the dynamic tension between capitalism (which he calls efficient but non-democratic) and democracy (which he says is fair but messy) and shows how government is swinging the pendulum toward the latter in ways that have huge implications for investors. The book does not just focus on finance but moves through real estate, retail and manufacturing with the same panache and insight so that we get an overview of the new economy emerging from the crisis of 2007-2009. And Rudy Giuliani reminds us how beaten down New York was by the late 1980's and how leadership and vision can turn around even a seemingly hopeless situation; something to bear in mind as we face hard times ahead. Bravo to Lori Ann LaRocco for using her vision, contacts and savvy to put together this top notch salon in book form which we can all enjoy and learn from. It's as if we're at the table with the smartest and most seasoned operators, but better, because we can turn to this book as a valuable guide time and time again.Thriving in the New Economy: Lessons from Today's Top Business Minds Overview

The New Good Life: Living Better Than Ever in an Age of Less ReviewI had read some of Robbins other work, namely Diet for a New America, and was impressed by his passion and enthusiasm for healthy living. This book takes it to another level, and applies that passion to reshaping our ideas of wealth and happiness. Frankly, it couldn't have come at a better time, what with our recession and financial troubles these days. He makes the case for living... I almost want to say simply, but thats not right, its much more than that. Its about trying to be content with the things many folks seem to take for granted, and not seeking happiness in the superficial materialism. Really, an excellent read, I highly recommend it whether you're a fan of his other books, and especially if you're new to his work. We all need to learn a new way of living (since clearly the old way wasn't working, for us or the planet!) and this book is a big step in the right direction. Predictable Success: Getting Your Organization On the Growth Track--and Keeping It There ReviewWhile it is often easy to see patterns of failure in business, it is very challenging to replicate success. That is why I was so intrigued with the methodology behind Les McKeown's new book Predictable Success. I have engaged with over a thousand entrepreneurs and businesses in my career and Les' insights on how to structure and manage an organization would provide value to every single one of them, from start-up to Fortune 500.
Les describes seven stages of the business lifecycle, with Predictable Success being at the peak.
First he describes how every business starts out in a struggle to find a sustainable and profitable market for your products/services before your capital runs out. This can take up to three-five years to master and there are pretty much two options- you succeed and move on to the next stage or if your capital runs out you fail, which happens to upwards of 85%+ of all new businesses. I know there are a lot of folks professing bootstrapping strategies, but as Les's model demonstrates, if you run out of capital before you find that sustainable, profitable market, you will end up in that majority end of the statistics. The compromise: be frugal and scrappy in your expenditures, but still have that capital available to give your business enough time to get its legs underneath it.
If you make it out of the early struggle, Les says you get to a high-growth stage called "Fun" (his highly technical term for it). The business grows rapidly, you begin to see the fruits of your labor, but as you grow, your business becomes more complex. Eventually, in your business' growth, you will get to a point where systems and processes are needed and the entrepreneur(s) can't just manage the business viscerally. This moves you from Fun to a stage called "Whitewater", which can be recognized by the fact that you start dropping the ball, so to speak, in one or more areas of your business. The bad news- it is an unavoidable part of growth. The good news- if you put the right processes and systems in place, you will make it out and put yourself into Predictable Success.
One of the biggest takeaways for entrepreneurs is that Whitewater is an unavoidable stage, but that there is a light at the end of the tunnel (or waterway, if you will).
While Les says that it is theoretically possible to stay in Predictable Success forever, just like people age, businesses can age too. And sometimes, managers go a bit berserk with the systems and processes to the point that everything has a system or process, often favoring form over function. When your business starts expending tons of energy and not moving forward (i.e. growing), then you are on the "Treadmill". This stage is critical- in Treadmill, you can fix things and infuse more entrepreneurial spirit in your organization and go back to Predictable Success. If you don't fix things in Treadmill, you head into the "Big Rut" and lose the ability to self-diagnose (and change).
There are many key insights for mature business in the book that describe what to do when the entrepreneurial spirit has been sucked out of your organization.
Regardless of the stage of your own business (and definitely if you advise other businesses) this is a very worthwhile read that will really help you hone your business structure.
