A Season of Night: New Orleans Life after Katrina ReviewI thoroughly enjoyed "A Season of Night: New Orleans After Katrina". It is one of those rare books that compel the reader to finish it in one sitting. It's descriptions of the surreal, tragic, and sometimes humorous events make it hard to believe this is non-fiction.
McNulty has a true gift. His recounting of his journey back to Mid-City grabs the emotions of his readers and has everyone "feeling" his book. He has done a remarkable job relating the tragedy of Katrina to those
who only watched it on TV or read about it in the newspaper. He has done a great service to his City and his fellow survivors. As one of millions of people who only experienced Katrina through the media McNulty's book gives a true human perspective.
"A Season of Night" will be high on my recommendation list for "must reads" this summer.A Season of Night: New Orleans Life after Katrina Overview

Open: An Autobiography ReviewSo you're thinking this might be one of those recently retired famous people books aren't you? One where a celebrity, or a Politician, or a sports star cranks out hundreds of pages of self-serving, history-correcting drivel in order to cash the big advance check. A book you can't even bring yourself to finish; better than a tranquilizer at bedtime.
Well, this is certainly not that book. "Open" is a journey that I predict will stay with you for a very long time. It's a completely unexpected trip to places you've never been. I'm not one of those quasi-professional reviewers you see on Amazon. But this book practically made me write about it.
Interestingly, Open starts not at the beginning and not quite at the end. Second round, US Open, 2006.
Not the final match of Andre's career--but the one right before that.
Against a competitor you'd never heard of before or since.
The battle was against the guy across the net, and also Andre's hatred of tennis, his failing body, the demons that he harnessed to get through the unending heroic contest that seemed destined to continue until both just fell into a heap on the court. And it is so well told.
After 20 pages, I knew that this was unlike any other biography I had ever read. Couldn't put it down. Couldn't stop thinking about it. Agassi dug deeper inside than most of us ever will have to, to get to core of what made him so powerful as a player and so conflicted as a person. It is all conspicuously real: The small moments, the outlandish triumphs and the friendships that sustained him and/or corrupted him. The gauntlet he had to run through to arrive at the balance and joy he has today. It's transformative.
The headlines about this book have mostly related to Andre's drug use when he was at his lowest. But honestly, although it marked the place from which he recovered and flourished, it's only an incidental part of this story. The story is actually about perseverance, intelligence and raw talent all baked together into a very, very large American life.
If Open doesn't win a Pulitzer Prize, something is terribly wrong. Can I nominate it?

Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain ReviewAs the previous reviewer has pretty much summarised the entire book (!) I'll just say that this is an honest, moving and well written account of a dark time in Portia's life. It was hard to read how she brought herself close to death, keeping herself on a tiny allowance of calories and strenuous exercise (in high heels at times). I know Hollywood expects women to be thin, but I was saddened to read her accounts of costume fittings - where she was humiliated for being anything other than 'stick thin'.
I loved the story about meeting Ellen in 2001 at a concert, when Ellen invited her over to her house along with other guests. Portia thought she was just being polite, but it turned out that Ellen had only invited the other people over so she would have the excuse of a party to invite Portia. So Ellen was stuck with having to entertain all those people that night!
I think coming out as a lesbian in Hollywood is still a risky move (how many others are there? not many) and Portia is an inspiration to other women who are coming to terms with their sexuality and trying to live their life honestly. Well done Portia, from a fellow Aussie :)

Romancing with Life ReviewDev Anand, Dilip Kumar, and Raj Kapoor, were the first three superstars of Hindi cinema, before there were superstars. Each was born within a couple of years of each other (Dev Anand in 1923, Raj Kapoor in 1924, and Dilip Kumar in 1922), each started his career around the same time (Dev Anand in 1946, Raj Kapoor in 1943, Dilip Kumar in 1946), and while Raj Kapoor died in 1988, and Dilip Kumar has been in retirement for more than a decade, Dev Anand continues to go strong, acting in and directing a movie every few years for over six decades now, the latest one released in 2005. Dev Anand had the screen persona of a dashing, evergreen, ever youthful happy-go-lucky city chap, with a legion of a mostly female fan following. Even in real life he has carried himself with the same elan, and at 85 years is an inspiration for many people.
The book is a celebration of Dev Anand's (Dharam Dev Anand is his full name, as he informs us) life and times, and his romance with life. It proceeds in pretty much a chronological fashion, starting with his childhood and ending with the year 2007, when the last chapter was written. It is written in breezy and mostly frank and honest style. Whether it is his sexual education, first on the upper berth of a train, and later while shooting for his first movie, whether his struggles to find a footing in the Hindi movie industry, or his encounters with the censor authorities, or his crush for Zeenat Aman, or his first love with Suraiya, and the heartbreaking end to the affair, or his visit to communist Soviet Union, he comes across as refreshingly honest.
The book is divided into numbered chapters, each small. Sometimes only a couple of pages, but rarely more than 4-5 pages. Each chapter covers a specific episode. So you get one chapter each for Guru Dutt, Kisore Kumar, his brother Vijay Anand, Indira Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, Rajiv Gandhi... with a brief reminiscence by Dev.
The language is quite ok in the book, the prose is fairly engaging, perhaps a result of Dev Anand's Lahore Government College education (one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the country in then undivided India, pre-Aug 14/15 1947).
Surprisingly, and refreshingly so, the book has a fairly comprehensive 12 page index, something you would not expect from a movie star's autobio.
However...
While the book 400+ page book makes for quick and easy reading, it has shortcomings too.
You will learn nothing of the craft of film making from reading this book. You will learn nothing about the great movies that Dev Anand starred in. Whether Dev Anand's collaboration with the great director and actor and close friend Guru Dutt (Jaal and Baazi), nor the fantastic musical collaboration with SD Burman A Sa Re Ga Ma Tribute to Commemorate the Centenary Celebrationa, nor the immense contributions of Chetan Anand and Vijay Anand (both brothers of Dev Anand) in such movies as 'Tere Ghar Ke Samne', 'The Guide', 'Johny Mera Naam', 'Jewel Thief', 'Kala Bazar', 'Nau do gyarah'. You have to go through Dev Anand's filmography at the end of the book to realize that Raj Khosla had directed Dev Anand in some past greats like 'Bombai Ka Babu', 'Kala Pani', 'CID', and 'Solva Saal'. What made the great movies that Dev Anand starred in great? Why is it that Dev Anand did not have a single truly commercial or artistically acclaimed hit after he started directing his movies? Consider these truly unremarkable ventures like 'Ishq Ishq Ishq', 'Sau Crore ', 'Awwal Number', 'Gangster', 'Mr Prime Minister', 'Censor', 'Lootmaar' that Dev Anand directed and starred in? What were the lessons that Dev Anand learn from these disasters? Introspection? No. He acknowledges that 'Ishq Ishq Ishq' was one of the biggest disasters of his career. Why? You don't know.
Perhaps the style of his book can be summed up with a line from his movie, Hum Dono: "barbadiyon ka shog manana fizool tha, barbadiyon ka jashn manata chala gaya" (loosely and inarticulately translated as 'lamenting disasters was a waste, I celebrated disasters').Romancing with Life Overview

Life Between the Keys: The (Mis)Adventures Of The 5 Browns Review"Life Between the Keys" is the story of The 5 Browns - the Juilliard-trained family of piano virtuosos who have taken the classical music scene by storm. The book consists of a series of essays, written by each of the five Brown siblings - Ryan, Melody, Gregory, Deondra and Desirae. These essays are filled with anecdotes about their childhood, their piano training at Juilliard, their performance tours and other experiences.
As a pianist myself and a graduate of a university piano performance program, I found their stories of long hours of practicing, auditioning for college, preparing for degree-required recitals and "living" in the practice rooms to really hit home with me. I definitely could identify with many of their experiences, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading these sometimes humorous/sometimes touching reminiscences.
Melody's recollection of long hours in the practice rooms was my favorite:
"...looking back on the room with blue velvet curtains, I see a home...I'd visit with friends and argue with enemies. I'd cry my eyes out, throw music across the room, and bang on the piano. I'd laugh until I couldn't breathe and play until I transcended the room. This was what I found in the practice rooms. Razor blades were the least of my worries. For life was between those keys, nothing else."
A few other things I loved about this book:
-This book illustrates that hard work and dedication really can pay off. I found myself inspired and motivated to practice the piano after reading this book!
-The importance of family is a theme that pervades this book. I was very impressed by how close these siblings are.
-Their passion and love for music is very evident. These siblings are literally changing the face of classical music, making it "cool" and inspiring young people everywhere.
While I would highly recommend this book especially to other pianists and musicians, I am positive that many people, musicians and non-musicians alike, will enjoy this inspiring book.Life Between the Keys: The (Mis)Adventures Of The 5 Browns Overview

Taking Woodstock: A True Story of a Riot, a Concert, and a Life ReviewThe above would be an appropriate subtitle for this heartfelt but energetic and witty coming-of-age autobiography/memoir by Elliot Tiber, whose main claim to fame is that he fought the petty politics and narrow-mindedness of his small town of Bethel, NY, in order to make possible the Woodstock Festival in 1969.
The author (born Eliyahu Teichberg) grew up in the richly ethnic neighborhood of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn in an emotionally-starved but hardworking family with his Russian-Jewish immigrant parents. His father worked as a roofer, while his mother ran a housewares store in which they all helped out. Elliot finished college and began a moderately successful career in art design, primarily starting out dressing store windows and painting murals for rich Manhattanites. A trip to the Catskills resulted in the family buying a run-down motel right off Highway 17B at White Lake, in the town of Bethel NY, and Elliot found himself splitting his time, working weekdays in NYC and spending weekends doing whatever had to be done to keep the motel operational and barely financially afloat.
At the same time, Elliot came to the realization that he was gay, and - for whatever reason - favored the underground S&M flavored scene that existed in NYC in the mid 1960's. He met and partied with Robert Mapplethorpe, Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams, and even encountered Rock Hudson at one point. Of course, coming out to his conservative parents wasn't an option for him at the time, but his "secret life" during the week somewhat served to make bearable the weekends at the motel, scrubbing toilets and dealing with customer complaints (The Teichbergs cut a few corners in customer service. For example, they had phones in each room, but they weren't connected to anything. The TV was an empty box, as was the air conditioner sleeve below the window. Need soap and a towel? It'll cost ya extra, but you're lucky you made it in today, since Dad has hosed off your sheets - the only cleaning they ever got - just yesterday.)
In early 1969, Elliot read with interest the news accounts that the promoters of the planned Woodstock Music and Art Festival had been denied a permit by the town of Walkill, their planned location. As president (nobody else wanted the job) of Bethel's Chamber of Commerce, he had the authority to issue festival permits, and contacted the promoters about the possibility of moving the festival to Bethel, and offered the meadow of a friend, dairy farmer Max Yasgur, as the perfect venue. Much of the book details the whirlwind events that followed, as the festival took on a life of its own, eventually attracting around 500,000 people to the small town, resulting in threats by locals, payoffs to those who opposed it, nudity, drugs, gangsters, people bathing in the lake, shortages of food and water, but - despite it all - the most historic event in music and counterculture history, after which nothing would ever be the same again for Elliot and his family.
The author has a gift in telling a story, even one as obviously self-centered as this one is, for the most part. Witty and engaging, sure to bring back memories of that era. Loved the reversible (regular/psychodelic) dust jacket! 5 stars out of 5.Taking Woodstock: A True Story of a Riot, a Concert, and a Life Overview

White Field, Black Sheep: A Lithuanian-American Life ReviewWhite Field, Black Sheep is the finely written and engaging story of a girl growing up in Chicago as the child of Lithuanian emigres, and of a woman coming to understand herself, her heritage, and her place in the world. It's an account of the author's loving relationship with her parents, especially her mother, whose battle with cancer forms the present-day narrative of the memoir. Along with fascinating insights into Lithuanian culture, Markelis gives the reader a vivid picture of life in Cicero in the 1960's and 1970's. Despite some heartbreaking moments, her story is ultimately optimistic and often laugh-out-loud funny.
The book itself is beautifully produced and illustrated with photographs of Chicago and the author's childhood.
In short, White Field, Black Sheep has everything that is best about memoirs.

Hope's Wish: How One Girl's Dream Made Others Come True ReviewStuart and Shelby Stout have incredible faith in God and this story is proof thereof. It has times of laughter, times of tears, and shows how truly faithful some can be in God to bring you through trying times.
The wish that Hope requested from Make-A-Wish was so incredible that the media in Charlotte, NC picked it up and ran with it! One little red-head with cancer raising $1 million for those less fortunate than her is truly inspirational. And not to mention it was done in less than 2 months!!
The power of Hope's wish still lives on today through the friends and family of Shelby and Stuart. I am blessed that I was able to witness some of this journey with the Stouts.Hope's Wish: How One Girl's Dream Made Others Come True Overview

Barney Frank: The Story of America's Only Left-Handed, Gay, Jewish Congressman ReviewI bought this book because Barney Frank is such an interesting person and politician. I thought that his biography above most other politicians' biographies would be likewise an interesting read. However, the writing in the book is constructed in such a mundane way (e.g., "he did this, then he did that, then he did his") that there is no storytelling element in it besides a monotonous recalling of facts. The painfully bland narrative voice does a disservice to Barney Frank's fascinating life. Ultimately, I could not finish the book because of its poor writing. The research is probably very good, but it needs another voice/writing style. I hope that one day a biography that is as interesting and fascinating as Barney Frank's life makes it to the shelves. I do not recommend this book, but I do recommend doing your own research and reading on this amazing politician.Barney Frank: The Story of America's Only Left-Handed, Gay, Jewish Congressman Overview

Stages: An Autobiography ReviewI was honestly hoping for more. To me the book felt like a checklist of events and not anything that really made Jay Osmond the man he is. He hinted at important events and then left the reader hanging to fill in any kind of detail. THere was no real information, like what was is about Kandilyn Harris that made her stand out among all those other girls he dated.
Some of it was humourus, some of it informative, but I don't feel like I know the 'real' Jay Osmond any better for having read the book. I was hoping to really see how he thinks, and feels about the events of his life. I wanted to see what he thought were the pivitol moments in his life and why they were.
Next time I want a timeline of a life I will go to wikipedia.Stages: An Autobiography Overview

Bury Me in My Jersey: A Memoir of My Father, Football, and Philly ReviewLet me preface this review by saying that I have never been a follower of sports; not to say that I dislike them, but I have never felt the desire to watch a game. With that said, I found myself unable to tear myself away from this book once I began reading. Even though it was far from what I normally choose to read, I was captivated by the writing, the characters, and the power of the stories.
From the end of the second chapter--one of my favorite chapters--I knew that I couldn't put it down. I can't really think of a part of the book I didn't like; although some of the sports references were lost on me (most I remembered from playing Backyard Football, sadly) they were explained well enough that I felt like I knew who they were by the end.
Honestly, though, the best thing about this book were the characters. Or the people, rather. Everyone was so well described, I felt like I knew them. Their reactions were so specific that they ceased to be just names and became distinct personalities.
And the humor--you can't forget the humor. The footnotes, especially, often cracked me up. I often have trouble distinguishing in books whether or not something is meant as a joke, but I had no trouble identifying the voice here, since it was so well-defined.
Some of my favorite parts:
-"What was the point? For who? For what?" (pg. 127) I really liked the tie-in here from an earlier chapter. It seemed almost self-deprecating; there are so many parallels drawn in this book between the narrator's past and football and his dad that it seems it would take several read-throughs (at least for me) to peel back all the layers. The point is, you can tell how well-crafted the story is, just from these few glimpses. Everything has its place, its own significance, its own impact on what is, what had, and what will happen. Nothing feels out of place in any way.
-"Undergrads love it when you curse." (pg. 164) So true.
-The sample Slipknot lyrics.
-I especially liked the sections that talked about writing or teaching, though I may be biased. I found myself curious to know what story it was the Frank Conroy supposedly salvaged from the rejection pile. Also, the bond that was forged between the Dad and his son was not merely based upon football, as it is explained; there was a large emphasis on writing, and the absolute faith for his son to become a published best-selling author; each part was interwoven with the next, so that nothing felt out of place.
-I wanted to go back and count how many times some variation of "streams of urine" popped up. I ended up laughing at every occurrence after the first; just how much cleanup is involved at the Lincoln Financial Field/The Vet after a game, anyway? The part with they boy shoved in a crawlspace by his father made me cringe.
-"Cheesesteaks have always been in my blood, both literally and metaphorically." (pg. 61) For some reason, I immediately imagined little cheesesteak-shaped red blood cells. Side note: Best names of the book: Cal-Cal and Fat Stuff. Fitz and Duffy come in a close second.
-The girl who is "literally unable to walk and chew gum at the same time." (pg. 122) Priceless.
-The honesty of the writing. It is so completely, brutally truthful, it's almost painful. If you're looking for a memoir where the author portrays himself as heroic and an otherwise moral paragon, do not read this book. There is only truth--and a startlingly deep level of self-analysis that will leave you spell-bound. I doubt any of us have discovered as much about ourselves in all of our lives as the author did in 224 pages. And the narrator portrayed is someone readers can root for.
What more is there to say? There wasn't any part I disliked. Although I did not personally connect to the recounting of the games, I loved the descriptions used and the heightened language; at parts, it seemed almost poetic. At no point did I find myself skimming, or bored.
There was one part I was torn on when reading: the ending. I loved it, especially the reflection in the car mirror. But I almost felt that the previous chapter was more conclusive in its ending than the actual final chapter, and I found myself going back to compare them. But then, now that I think about it, I liked the parallel between the beginning and ending.
There is definitely something to be said for a book that leaves you deep in thought, long after you turn the last page.Bury Me in My Jersey: A Memoir of My Father, Football, and Philly Overview

Soccer Dad: A Father, a Son, and a Magic Season ReviewMy husband and I could relate to this book on many levels. Our children are much younger than his son but, as this author retells stories of his boy growing up in soccer and his passion for the sport, we could have inserted ourselves into the pages of this book. Wetherell's casual style of writing was enjoyable, although at times it seemed a bit wordy and off topic (a few small tangents I could have done without). Overall, it was an enjoyable read. I chuckled out loud more than a few times and even shed a tear when I could relate so personally. Wetherell draws you into his family and into himself in such a way that any sports parent could relate.Soccer Dad: A Father, a Son, and a Magic Season Overview

Racing Odysseus: A College President Becomes a Freshman Again ReviewInterwoven themes of mid-life personal growth and recovery, contemporary college education commentary, and snippets of Ancient Greek literary wisdom, with a refreshing and upbeat message! This book has it all, from the serious to the humorous, as a tranformative tale of work, love, mind ,and body. It is uplifting and deftly done. The author describes a personal journey that adds new meaning to being a 'life-long learner'. And, he documents the life force of youth in current culture against a backdrop of literature that spans human history. It seems to me that he has captured the elan vital that exists across the generational divide. And, he shows us a perspective that tears down this divide, like the Fall of the Berlin Wall, to expose a very warm, human story that anyone, of any age, can relate to. It is a refreshing and uplifting read that leaves the reader a better person.
Having visited the St. John's College campus,in Annapolis, Maryland, several times, I can attest to the flawless accuracy of his descriptions of the college setting, activities, and staff.Racing Odysseus: A College President Becomes a Freshman Again Overview

Getting It Through My Thick Skull: Why I Stayed, What I Learned, and What Millions of People Involved with Sociopaths Need to Know ReviewI was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked his book. It's not a schlocky National Enquireristic piece of junk, it's a thoughtful and inspiring book that I had a hard time putting down.
Here's what was compelling to me... We all look at sensational media coverage of events by looking over the shoulders of reporters and papparazzi. In this book I really got a feel for what's it's like to be the person who's got the camera lens focused on their every move and breath. Mary Jo helped me to feel the violation of that in a very real way. I cannot imagine what it would be like to suffer the trauma of a senseless attack, only to be attacked over and over again by a senseless media circus.
Here's somebody who survived SO many things and it's inspiring to know that she's found a way to be a happy, healthy, and whole person. She's still walking around with a bullet in her head, but seems to have an attitude of optimism and dignity that I don't think I would be able to muster under similar life circumstances. It puts my seemingly "big" problems into perspective.
The most valuable part of this book to the world, I think, is the reference to sociopathic behavior. There is probably a HUGE number of women (and men!) living with sociopaths, completely unaware that the insanity of it isn't NORMAL. It's easy to get lost in that dysfunction, because of the ability of sociopaths to charm their way out of anything. I think it is the same kind of abuse as a spouse beater, without the physical wounds, but much more damaging because it messes with your head so bad.
Bravo to Mary Jo for all that she's lived through and all that she's shared - willingly or unwillingly - on the public stage.Getting It Through My Thick Skull: Why I Stayed, What I Learned, and What Millions of People Involved with Sociopaths Need to Know Overview

Mornings with Barney: The True Story of an Extraordinary Beagle ReviewI consider myself lucky to have been a frequent viewer of Dick and Barney. Dick knows as did Barney what 'heart' means. This is a great book for fans and animal lovers. It covers Barney's life with Dick from start to end and all of the laughter and tears in between.Mornings with Barney: The True Story of an Extraordinary Beagle Overview

Flights Against the Sunset: Stories that Reunited a Mother and Son ReviewI finished reading Kenn Kaufman's much-anticipated Flights Against the Sunset last night. Overall, it was an enjoyable book chock full of insightful and many times humorous stories set against the backdrop of him visiting his ill mother in the hospital. The book plays out in snippets of interactions with his mother, the history of Kenn and his family, and the birding-related stories. It's kind of a "Mitch Albom meets birding" right down to the small physical size of the book. As Kenn has shown us in Kingbird Highway, he's an outstanding storyteller. He makes you wish you were there with him experiencing what he's experiencing. He also makes you think with his insights on common birding discussions like listing and chasing rarities.
If you've followed Kenn's Birdwatcher's Digest columns over the years, you may see some re-hashed stories because I think many of them came from there. Since I haven't kept up with those, they were mostly new to me. I do have two minor complaints about the book. First, the parts where Kenn is interacting with his mother seemed a bit forced into the story. I had trouble making an emotional connection. But I'm sure this book is a tribute to the author's mother, and who am I to stand against that? My second complaint is not really about the story itself, but the price tag on the book - $24 retail for a small hardcover 240 page book! Yikes!
All in all, if you're a fan of Kenn's writing or just good birding stories, you'll definitely enjoy Flights Against the Sunset.Flights Against the Sunset: Stories that Reunited a Mother and Son Overview

In the Place of Justice: A Story of Punishment and Deliverance ReviewI have lived in Louisiana since 1980 and have followed Wilbert Rideau's story the entire time. I always believed that he should be eligible for parole at some point when fair-minded people in charge of the system believed it was time. I also saw that fair-minded people were not in charge of the system. He was too famous, too outspoken, and a black murder in a racist state with corrupt whites and blacks in power. I was glad in 2005 when he finally got out. It always seemed to me that he had changed and had proven he had rehabilitated himself with some help from the prison system amid a hellish environment. I don't think prisoners should be in a spa-like setting, but they surely should be in a humane environment and should at least have safe conditions with fair options to be rehabilitated and then freed to go into society and have a second chance. Otherwise we just reinforce the violence and anti-social actions that led them to crime in the first place. I think we should set an example of how civilized humans act. Otherwise we are no better than the criminals.
Thus, it was with great delight that I saw this autobiography was for sale. Ii went to a book signing and purchased it and had it signed by the author and spoke with him slightly. He seemed a decent, intelligent, quiet-spoken older man.
Now to the book itself. It is a page turner. At each sitting to read it, I have read at least 100 pages at a time. He is a very good writer and re-creates the world of the Parish jails and of Angola quite vividly. It is all so awful with immense unfairness and in truth evil that it is hard to believe it is not fiction. But it is a true. The parts that describe large and small acts of kindness and fairness from fellow prisoners and prison employees and others are very moving.I really highly recommend this book if you like true stories or any stories. It is basically a saga of determination, transformation, personal integrity, and redemption. It tells of brutal events and of tenacity and of a persons's struggle to develop his own humanity and to keep hope in the face of harsh and quite often unfair circumstances. It is also about coming to terms with having murdered a fellow human being.
The man killed a person in cold blood and wounded two others. That was in 1961. He served 44 years in prison. He changed. He admits the murder was awful and wrong and really hurt others and that he feels great pain about having done it. He has become a good human being. He is a great and talented writer and reporter. Again I will say I am glad he got out and I love his book. Everyone is entitled to feel about him as they do. I am glad i gave his book a chance and read it. Taken on it's own merits, this book measures up as enthralling, real drama. It is a great read.In the Place of Justice: A Story of Punishment and Deliverance Overview

My Year with Eleanor: A Memoir ReviewNormally I'm somewhat wary of "I tried __ for a year" memoirs, but this one is delightful, inspiring and offers some history lessons. When Noelle Hancock learns that her entertainment blogging job has ended, she's at a loss as to what to do. In therapy, she's trying to overcome her fears, and she decides to look to Eleanor Roosevelt for advice, latching on to the First Lady's prompt to do one thing each that scares you. Hancock doesn't detail 365 feats, but the ones she does are at turns dramatic (shark diving, trapeze work, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro), unnerving (working at a mortuary to conquer her fear of death), amusing (doing standup comedy is the thing she fears most) and more everyday (weaning herself off sleeping pills). Along the way she writes about her fears about whether her boyfriend's reporter job will always outshadow her and the future of their relationship.
What I appreciated most is that Hancock is not trying to tell everyone to apply Eleanor's advice, and she grapples constantly with being "ready" to face her fears, taking her last sleeping pill when she is forced to by the mountain climb. She isn't overly self-deprecating, but does bare her fears in a way that makes it almost impossible not to like her as a narrator--or look inward at one's own fears. She also shines a bit of light on some of the major accomplishments of Eleanor Roosevelt, and while the two are from very different times, the effect Eleanor has on the author is clear in her references and devotion to living according to her spirit. This memoir never feels predetermined, and Hancock's insights into her accomplishments are as worthy of attention as her feats themselves, especially relating to Kiliminjaro. She shows an empathy and compassion that extends to her friends and those she meets (including the dead) as well as to herself.

Last Dog on the Hill: The Extraordinary Life of Lou ReviewLou was found on top of a hill in Mendocino County, with his family, a pack of wild dogs born from guards dogs on a nearby marijuana grow. He was covered in fleas and ticks, had an infected gash on his neck and a limp. But in his eyes, Steve Duno saw his new best friend.
He took Lou to a nearby vet who treated his injury, removed half a cup full of ticks, vaccinated and de-wormed him. The vet warned Steve that his bowel movements would be interesting, and was right: during their first day together, Lou eliminated a squirrel skull, sock string, foil, pebbles and a gum wrapper.
This was the beginning of their friendship, as told by Steve at his book signing for "Last Dog on the Hill" at Barnes & Noble last night. I attended assuming it would be the usual book signing, i.e. "buy my book" with little talk of the book itself. Instead, I left feeling transformed by the bond of love between Steve and one very special Rottweiler/Shepherd mix.
After a childhood of hunting for road kill and trash, Lou was not used to being confined to a house. The first time Steve left him alone for a five minute trip to the store, he returned to find the carpet ripped from the floor, a door unhinged, and the kitchen window shattered. On this day, Lou taught Steve his first lesson - that he needed to become a dog trainer. Since then, Steve has trained 8000 dogs and become an expert behaviorist and author. During his 16 year life, Lou also helped teach deaf children sign language and helped train other wild dogs how to behave in society, saving hundreds from euthanasia.
Steve was an in-house tutor for celebrity children, including Allysa Milano and Sidney Poitier's children, but the real star was Lou, whom he compared to Antonio Banderas and Al Pacino. A real Rin Tin Tin, Lou saved Steve's life twice, prevented a rape, foiled a robbery, survived cancer, comforted war veterans and sick patients during their last days, acted in a Washington State Lottery Commercial, graced the cover of a book, and knew over 200 words and commands. Even some of his friends were celebrities, like Jonathan Harris, Mr. Smith in "Lost in Space", who befriended him while tethered outside Steve's health club.
In the opening paragraph of the book, Steve relates how he could invoke the presence of the departed Lou from the smell in the carpet, his furs in the floor. I felt this way at the book signing, as if I had met Lou. His spirit lives forever through the memories of his owner, which are now being expressed in book signings across the US. In the words of Lou, "Arugula" (the sound of his bark).
"Last Dog on the Hill" is a wonderful tribute to a dog with a very powerful soul, the tale of the purest of love between dog and man and their mission together. You may want to include a box of tissues in your order. My eyes welled up three times in reading just a few pages.

Good Stuff: A Reminiscence of My Father, Cary Grant ReviewAs an ardent Cary Grant fan, I had high hopes about this book, written by a loving daughter about her much-admired and celebrated father. I was disappointed, though, by the rambling, redundant quality of the writing (where was the editor?), and the tightly controlled version of her father's image that Ms. Grant chose to reveal. The author poses many questions -- apparently to herself -- and doesn't answer any of them for the reader. This book would perhaps make a good memoir for her son, but there's nothing here to invite the public in.Good Stuff: A Reminiscence of My Father, Cary Grant Overview
