Have you ever known anybody with a guide dog? Well Nicky Flynn is the owner of a former guide dog Reggie. Nicky is an eleven-year old boy. Nicky lives with his mom in Boston, MA. When Nicky's mom brings Reggie home from the shelter Nicky goes ballistic. His mom says "You have always wanted a dog and now you have one." Nicky's parents are divorced and every time Nicky has plans with his dad his dad cancels. One night when Reggie attacks Nicky's mom she says "I will be getting animal control out here tomorrow morning." That is the night of the great escape. It takes one mistake to miss up you whole life. Reggie didn't attack Nicky's mom for no reason. She was going to give Nicky a high-5 and Reggie doesn't like it when someone puts their hand up to Nicky. Nicky and Reggie go on a journey they won't forget.
I love the way Art Corriveau writes this book. He does different headings instead of chapters like Wednesday night, the Holke's office. Art writes in great detail and is an amazing author. Art gives many details about the plot, setting, and characters.
I was shocked while reading How I (Nicky Flynn) Finally get a Life (and a dog). There are many twists and turns in this crazy book. It is breathe taking and an adventure of a lifetime

A Season of Night: New Orleans Life after Katrina ReviewI thoroughly enjoyed "A Season of Night: New Orleans After Katrina". It is one of those rare books that compel the reader to finish it in one sitting. It's descriptions of the surreal, tragic, and sometimes humorous events make it hard to believe this is non-fiction.
McNulty has a true gift. His recounting of his journey back to Mid-City grabs the emotions of his readers and has everyone "feeling" his book. He has done a remarkable job relating the tragedy of Katrina to those
who only watched it on TV or read about it in the newspaper. He has done a great service to his City and his fellow survivors. As one of millions of people who only experienced Katrina through the media McNulty's book gives a true human perspective.

Dogs of Proud Spirit ReviewI finished reading Melanie's new book, "The Dogs of Proud Spirit" and have already reread several of the chapers because I enjoyed them so much. I found myself laughing as Molly surfed the countertops and snagged sandwiches without moving the plate a centimeter! Imagine Melanie's surprise when there was no sign of having made lunch! But then there are the heartfelt chapters of dogs who were found shivering in the cold at the Proud Spirit gate or puppies dumped along the roadside and welcomed into the warmth and love of Melanie's and Jim's hearts and home. How they joined the growing pack of dogs is told, by Melanie, in a way that puts the reader right beside her in each and every situation.
This book is terrific and I HIGHLY recommend it! All who have read her first two books, "The Horses of Proud Spirit" and "Hoofprints . . ." have eagerly awaited another book by Melanie, and happily, we have this new one. We think of Proud Spirit as a horse sanctuary, which it is, but ...the Bowles have taken in stray dogs who have wandered into their lives . . . currently twelve who will touch your heart as well as make you laugh out loud.
Don't miss this one! And best of all, purchasing any of the Proud Spirit books directly helps both the horses and the dogs.

Drinking with Miss Dutchie: A Memoir ReviewIt's not a spoiler for me to say that the author has to euthanize his precious black lab, Miss Dutchie, at age 12½, because he tells us himself on the second page of the book. That doesn't make it any easier to read about it, though, when he actually describes the process at the end of the book. In between is a wonderful read, that I couldn't put down.
Knowing the ultimate outcome didn't make this story any less compelling and, in fact, may have made it more so. Breslin does a good job of interweaving the story of Miss Dutchie's life with his struggles with alcoholism (hence, of course, the title ... ) But he really doesn't "drink" with Miss Dutchie; rather, she helps him stop doing just that. To find out how, you just have to read it.
Anyone who thinks this is primarily a "dog story" might be disappointed; it's more a story about the author's middle-aged life and marriage. It reads like a coming-of-age story in some ways, and he is quite open in discussing his struggles, flaws, idiosyncracies, etc. This had me at times either rooting for him or wanting to say "hey ... just grow up and deal with it!" It's almost like reading someone's diary and, actually, much of it was created from Breslin's journal writings.
If you've ever had to euthanize a beloved pet, there are parts of this book that will make you cry out loud; it is very painful in spots. However, anyone who's ever loved a pet will also be nodding in agreement through much of it, as the author describes his deep relationship with Miss Dutchie and how she changed his life.
I was especially happy to find a couple of photo inserts in the book; I always find it helpful when reading non-fiction or memoirs to be able to actually "see" the characters who are central to the story.
I'm a person who looks up any unfamiliar words I encounter while reading. Maybe I was just in "intellectual down time" while reading this, but it seemed I had to do that more often than usual with this book. I was stopped by, for example: contumely; dipsomania; pitons; spalls; termagant ... and (gulp) sententious and casuistry in the same sentence. I'm impressed by the author's knowledge and correct usage of these types of words, but I frankly think it's a bit distracting to encounter so many of them in casual reading, and it's my only real criticism of the book.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book. Stock up on tissues before you read it.

Last Dog on the Hill: The Extraordinary Life of Lou ReviewLou was found on top of a hill in Mendocino County, with his family, a pack of wild dogs born from guards dogs on a nearby marijuana grow. He was covered in fleas and ticks, had an infected gash on his neck and a limp. But in his eyes, Steve Duno saw his new best friend.
He took Lou to a nearby vet who treated his injury, removed half a cup full of ticks, vaccinated and de-wormed him. The vet warned Steve that his bowel movements would be interesting, and was right: during their first day together, Lou eliminated a squirrel skull, sock string, foil, pebbles and a gum wrapper.
This was the beginning of their friendship, as told by Steve at his book signing for "Last Dog on the Hill" at Barnes & Noble last night. I attended assuming it would be the usual book signing, i.e. "buy my book" with little talk of the book itself. Instead, I left feeling transformed by the bond of love between Steve and one very special Rottweiler/Shepherd mix.
After a childhood of hunting for road kill and trash, Lou was not used to being confined to a house. The first time Steve left him alone for a five minute trip to the store, he returned to find the carpet ripped from the floor, a door unhinged, and the kitchen window shattered. On this day, Lou taught Steve his first lesson - that he needed to become a dog trainer. Since then, Steve has trained 8000 dogs and become an expert behaviorist and author. During his 16 year life, Lou also helped teach deaf children sign language and helped train other wild dogs how to behave in society, saving hundreds from euthanasia.
Steve was an in-house tutor for celebrity children, including Allysa Milano and Sidney Poitier's children, but the real star was Lou, whom he compared to Antonio Banderas and Al Pacino. A real Rin Tin Tin, Lou saved Steve's life twice, prevented a rape, foiled a robbery, survived cancer, comforted war veterans and sick patients during their last days, acted in a Washington State Lottery Commercial, graced the cover of a book, and knew over 200 words and commands. Even some of his friends were celebrities, like Jonathan Harris, Mr. Smith in "Lost in Space", who befriended him while tethered outside Steve's health club.
In the opening paragraph of the book, Steve relates how he could invoke the presence of the departed Lou from the smell in the carpet, his furs in the floor. I felt this way at the book signing, as if I had met Lou. His spirit lives forever through the memories of his owner, which are now being expressed in book signings across the US. In the words of Lou, "Arugula" (the sound of his bark).
"Last Dog on the Hill" is a wonderful tribute to a dog with a very powerful soul, the tale of the purest of love between dog and man and their mission together. You may want to include a box of tissues in your order. My eyes welled up three times in reading just a few pages.

Lightning People: A Novel ReviewI was intrigued when I read the synopsis of this book and decided to pre order a copy. I had high expectations and not only did this book meet those expectations, it exceeded them! Lightning People is by far the best book I've read all year.
Lightning People could be called a New York novel but that would be doing it a disservice as it's so much bigger than that.
It's an epic, plot driven, character piece that grips you from beginning to end. The central characters - Del, Madi, Joseph, Raj and William - will haunt you for weeks after you finish reading. I still can't help but think of them each day. In fact, I miss them!
The plot continuosly twists and turns. It's one of those books that are impossible to put down. It's about paranoia, love, loss, friendship, rattlesnakes, multiculturalism, marriage, green cards, murder.....and that's just part one!
I was surprised to see that this was Christopher Bollen's first novel. He really knows how to craft complex characters and place. I live in Tampa and for one week I was completely transported and engulfed by the gritty and seductive streets of New York City. Not only is Bollen a sophisticated writer, he is obviously a great observer of people and life. I really think he has communicated something important about the human condition with this book. I'm excited to see what he does next.
It's rare to find a book that is so entertaining and edifying. A MUST READ!Lightning People: A Novel Overview

How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend: The Classic Training Manual for Dog Owners (Revised & Updated Edition) Review"How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend" is an excellent reference book for the first time dog owner and trainer. As well as the normal chapters on how to choose, socialise, feed, groom and train a puppy, the Monks cover topics as varied as how to read a puppy's pedigree, how to massage your dog, and how your dog's living environment will impact upon his training needs.
Unlike many training manuals, the Monks of New Skete strike a nice balance between "dominance" based training methods and formal training. The Monks stress the importance of earning your dog's trust and respect and the importance of being a strong pack leader for your dog; they also recognise the need for formal training, and spend several chapters explaining how this is best accomplished. Most training books are heavily biased towards one or other method, so it is nice to read a book which realises that both are ingredients in successful dog training.
The training methods discussed are fairly traditional, with the Monks either luring or gently moulding the dog into shape, then praising. However they also advocate classically conditioning a positive reinforcer (keys jingling), which can then be used at strategic times to help a dog relax; and they do discuss and recommend clicker methods for "sensitive" dogs.
Contrary to some reviews posted below, the Monks of New Skete do in fact advocate using plenty of positive reinforcement in their training. Confusion on this issue probably stems from the fact that the Monks do not advocate constantly using food treats while training. However, food treats are not the only positive reinforcement method available to a trainer. As the Monks point out "Food treats are an extremely effective motivator to help dogs learn...however, they are not meant to replace sincere verbal and physical praise." The Monks advocate that puppies are regularly praised, petted and played with during training. Punishment only ever comes after a dog has been shown an exercise multiple times and fully understands what is required of it, and far from being harsh or abusive, is normally limited to stern eye contact or a verbal growl. Scruff shakes and chin cuffs are reserved for the worst transgressions. The Monks take care to emphasise that any punishment used should be immediate, fair and consistent.
There are certainly gaps in this book. The "Problem Solving" section is rudimentary at best (for example, the section on interdog aggression only recommends limiting the dog's opportunity to mark territory, desexing him and muzzling him!). Readers with a problem dog would be well advised to get some more indepth resources regarding their dog's particular problem. The obedience exercises covered are quite limited, covering only the sit, down, stay, heel and recall. Owners wishing to teach their dogs more advanced exercises will need to seek additional resources. It is also disappointing that the Monks only discuss one method of teaching each exercise. With the plethora of options available today to teach even something as simple as a sit - for example, shaping, luring, capturing - it is a pity the Monks did not discuss several options for training each behaviour.
Despite such flaws, "How to be your Dog's Best Friend" is one of the three training books I generally recommend to new dog owners (the other two are "The Other End of the Leash" by Patricia McConnell and "The Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson). These three books complement each other very well. "The Other End of the Leash" is a great primer on canine-human communication, whereas "The Culture Clash" is an excellent manual on operant conditioning-based positive training. "How to Be your Dog's Best Friend" both fills in important gaps left by the other two books, and puts the case for kind and fair "traditional" style training.How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend: The Classic Training Manual for Dog Owners (Revised & Updated Edition) Overview
