Shopping for God: How Christianity Went from In Your Heart to In Your Face Review"This is not a book about God" (p. 1).
Thus begins James Twitchell's book, Shopping for God. "Essentially, this book is about how religious sensation is currently being manufactured, packaged, shipped out, and consumed" (p. 3). It is about "... buying and selling..." the religious experience. "...[We] are doing a robust business in supplying valuable religious experiences for shoppers at reasonable prices" (p. 2).
Sam Harris and others might counter that this price is too high, but that's a subject that can reviewed in their books.
Twitchell uses a lot of examples in this well-written book. He brings up the evolution of the religious braggart in the entertainment industries (note Mel Gibson's impact with The Passion of the Christ). He discusses the development of the Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson types (did Robertson really state of liberal professors, "They are racists, murderers, sexual deviants, and supporters of Al Qaeda -- and they could be teaching your kids" (p. 8)).
Radio, television, books, and the internet... these are all fertile ground for the planting of of the seeds of religious dogma. "Just about every American -- 96 percent, in one poll -- believes in God" (p. 22). Twitchell proclaims that there are over 2000 religious groups in America today.
And there is extreme competition for market share.
People are shopping, and religions are branding. Twitchell discusses the marketing strategies in this Church Growth Movement. There is competition for your soul.
Here's an example that I missed: the United Church of Christ's infamous "bouncer" campaign in 2005. The television ad goes like this. All types of people are denied entry to a church by a tough bouncer. Fade to black. The a narrator states "Jesus didn't turn away people. Neither do we" (p. 160).
Mormons, Lutherans, Baptists, Episcopalians -- even Unitarian Universalists (the Uncommon Denomination... we're here if you need us, but we're not going after you) -- they all have marketing campaigns.
This evolution of marketing programs has led to the development of Megachurches. Twitchell discusses these, and their growth, in some detail.
Twitchell concludes, "How religion allows us to make either meaning or mincemeat out of this shrinking world remains to be seen" (p. 291).
Apatheist -- that's what Twitchell calls himself ("... a disinclination to care all that much about one's religion and an even stronger disinclination to care about other people's" (p. 33)).
This was an interesting, not so flattering, overview of the religious world we live in in America. We line up to belong. I have no idea whether people pretend to believe, try to believe, or truly believe. Twitchell just argues that it seems like every time you turn around, someone is throwing it in your face. And nobody seems to be complaining.
As Rod Serling might say, ""There is nothing wrong with your television set..." Our minds are not our own.Shopping for God: How Christianity Went from In Your Heart to In Your Face Overview

Even Greater: 12 Real-life Stories That Inspire You to Do Great Things for God ReviewIn just the last five years I've heard about a number of miracles. And the details of what God did in people's lives have gotten hazy sometimes though with something to jog my memory I always come back to, "o, yes, that was amazing." How this evangelist is experiencing God is a gift to carry around with you inside the day as you plan or seek to hear your next step. The Holy Spirit led me to this book to give away but first to open it and...if we ask God to do even greater through us and for His glory, and we want to want what He wants, awesome awesome life is coming towards us for us and for more than we can imagine. This is what I received from Even Greater. And praise God for the vessel He has molded called Brother Bonnke for love of Africa, and for His love of each and every one of us.Even Greater: 12 Real-life Stories That Inspire You to Do Great Things for God Overview

Hope's Wish: How One Girl's Dream Made Others Come True ReviewStuart and Shelby Stout have incredible faith in God and this story is proof thereof. It has times of laughter, times of tears, and shows how truly faithful some can be in God to bring you through trying times.
The wish that Hope requested from Make-A-Wish was so incredible that the media in Charlotte, NC picked it up and ran with it! One little red-head with cancer raising $1 million for those less fortunate than her is truly inspirational. And not to mention it was done in less than 2 months!!
The power of Hope's wish still lives on today through the friends and family of Shelby and Stuart. I am blessed that I was able to witness some of this journey with the Stouts.Hope's Wish: How One Girl's Dream Made Others Come True Overview

Waiting for the Apocalypse: A Memoir of Faith and Family ReviewNot being a fan of any sort of religion, I'm curious, fascinated and a bit envious of people who believe deeply in their faith. Reading about Veronica Chater's pious mom and dad, and their travels between California and Portugal with 6 children in the 1970's to find the proper Catholic Utopia, is like watching fuzzy homemade movies of that era; and then trying to put the puzzle pieces together for days after, knowing there is a piece missing. Perhaps that piece is sanity. But you will enjoy the emotionally bumpy ride and come to find compassion for the characters you have absolutely nothing in common with. For example, the mother who prays in traffic with a load of kids in the backseat of the car, "Hail Mary, full of grace-Tracey, take that thing out of Jennifer's mouth before she chokes-who are in heaven hallowed be-Ronnie, that's enough pushing, keep your hands to yourself-kingdom come thy will be done on earth . . . Nick get off the floor!" Or, the dad, who quits the highway patrol, sells everything and has a backyard work shed called "the Womb" where he keeps track of Communists advancing across the globe.
I'm about half way through the book and I can't put it down. Chater is a talent not to be missed. She's a beautiful storyteller that keeps you coming back wanting more. This is the perfect book for a book club.Waiting for the Apocalypse: A Memoir of Faith and Family Overview

Most Important Year in a Woman's Life, The/The Most Important Year in a Man's Life ReviewBoth my husband and I of 4 months are reading "The Most Important Year in a Woman's/Man's Life", and we are thoroughly impressed with it so far!
My husband really liked how his "side"of the book started out with topics of sports, and money...he says that immediately grabbed his attention.
Now my "side", Susan Devries and Bobble Wolgemuth writing style really appealed to the emotional aspect of marriage...the expectations prior to marraige, and the reality of life after marraige. I appreciate their ability to effectively communicate women's emotion in writing, which is not easy to do! I believe the lady authors do a superb job at capturing the emotions and lending that support for the female during the 1st year of marraige.
The book also speaks on topics such as sex from both the male and female perspective...So the female authors explain what sex is like for the men-and the importance of making love with your husband, and the male authors explain sex to the men using a baseball analogy (first base, second base, third base, and home) to ensure they comprehend how to make love to your wife.
There is also the middle section, "Meet in the middle" with activities/review material for the husband and wife to complete together once they have each read their portion.
This is a very creative book! 2-in-1! I have never seen that!
I will definately recommend this book to other newlyweds in my church! Most Important Year in a Woman's Life, The/The Most Important Year in a Man's Life Overview
