A Christmas Blizzard ReviewChristmas novels are always nice to read, however this one of Garrison Keillor's is a bit different from what you might expect. It is not the sweet stories of the PBS show Prairie Home Companion, especially when you read in the first 2 pages that Mr. Sparrow, the main character, hates Christmas - the red-green monster - the world's longest and unhappiest holiday with the sheer horror of `The Little Drummer Boy'.
This story contains a lot of Midwestern guilt and woe, but yet its' little continual gems of exaggeration keep the humor alive: " it wasn't like her to fall apart like that, she being a member of the National rifle Association".
James Sparrow needs to learn to love Christmas, as his wife Joyce does and also get over his fear of freezing his tongue to pump handles- their siren call where he has to force himself to keep his tongue in his mouth and not on car door handles or bronze busts of Studs Terkel. His past contains among other problems; a mother who was obsessed by worries of the Christmas tree catching fire. James flies home to Looseleaf, North Dakota where he encounters his past in the form of a dead friend who is now a wolf. A big haired airline ticket lady, a cousin who is plotting to overthrow the US government and is married to an undercover FBI agent who has married her to keep an eye on her.
Through all the humorous absurdities James is rescued from his fears, the blizzard, potential arrest, learns to love Christmas, but most of all discovers the moral of the story: that small kindnesses can create great good...as good a moral as any for a Christmas book

And if they have a portal to heaven...well, let's just say it wouldn't be pretty. Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Will Cookie ever get a true fashion sense? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel them as they do?

1st and foremost, I found myself shaking my head over and over while reading this book, wondering how in the world Daryda can be such a genius with words even when it's filler. I'm utterly amazed at her ability to turn EVERYTHING funny, even when the characters are in dire straits. It truly is a gift...
O.K, on to the book. An amazing follow-up to First Grave on the Right. Another smart, sexy, sassy, sophisticated read, with incredible action, mystery, and romance.
Per usual, Charley is constantly finding herself in trouble, though this time she's not only trying to solve a missing person case for the APD and her best friend Cookie, she's also trying desperately to save Reyes from himself.
Reyes doesn't make it easy on her AT ALL, and while we learn a little bit more about the enigma that is Reyes Farrow in Second Grave, I know there is still so much to uncover.
The underlying stories in this book and the supporting characters' roles were phenomenal. I enjoyed every single offshoot of the main plotline, and found myself right there with the characters at every turn.
I laughed (A LOT), I groaned, my heart beat quickened... it was a wonderful journey with a fabulous book, and I'm very excited to dig into Third Grave Dead Ahead.
LITERAL ADDICTION gives Second Grave on the Left 5 Skulls and suggests it to anyone who wants a witty, amazing, unique paranormal read.
While Second Grave can be read as a stand-alone, I highly suggest reading First Grave on the Right before Second Grave to get the full impact of the character's and the story. Believe me, you won't be disappointed!

Spinning Out ReviewFrenchy's had a hell of a year, and now he just wants to coast through his senior year. But Stewart wants to get involved and, as his best friend, Frenchy backs him up. Their relationship, mirrored in the master-servant/leader-follower relationship of Sancho and the Don, is the driving force of this book. And it's a serious and challenging relationship. Still, Spinning Out is mostly hilarious. It's not laugh-out-loud funny; it's more subtle than that. If this book were literary fiction instead of YA, it would be called "intelligent humor." The banter between Frenchy and Stewart is always snarky, and when you throw Ralph, their pot dealer/Frenchy's mom's boyfriend, into the mix, it's gets a little out of control. In a good way. That's why, when Stewart starts to act a bit...off, Frenchy doesn't think too much of it.
Stewart falls further and further into the role of Don Quixote; it's great for the play, but hard on Frenchy. It's also hard on his budding relationship with stage manager Kaela (who is awesome-sauce). So he steps away, just a little bit. Finally able to claim a little bit of his own limelight in the role of Sancho, Frenchy separates himself just the tiniest bit from Stewart. They're still best friends (and Frenchy is a Great Friend), they're just no longer practically surgically attached.
During all of this changing and growing and relationship stuff, there is still a show to put on! Long rehearsals, music practices, hot chicks with power tools building sets, it's all there. Theater geeks and show choir enthusiasts (and fans of books like My Invented Life) will love this aspect. Dead Rules ReviewIt was supposed to be Jana and Michael, Webster and Haynes, for always. She wasn't supposed to die. Their future was all mapped out. They were supposed to be together. Forever.
But if she had to die, then he should be with her. He was Romeo to her Juliet. And without Juliet there was no Romeo. Romeo couldn't live without Juliet and so he followed her in death.

Dead Rules is the wildly funny, dark and disturbing, yet light, and at times sweet, debut young adult novel from author Randy Russell. This exceptional story pulls you in from the very first lines and is an extremely fast, incredibly ironic and immensely entertaining read.
The story is told mainly from Jana's perspective - a girl who met her untimely demise in what appears to be a freak bowling accident - with a few alternate perspectives and peeks at the world of the living throughout.
As awareness slowly dawns on Jana about her new situation and the fact that she is separated from the love of her life, she becomes determined to make sure that she and Michael are reunited.
And if she can't convince him to join her in death, then she plans on taking matters into her own hands to ensure that the two of them are together, forever.
The author has written an exceedingly creative one-of-a-kind story with Dead Rules. Each character has such a distinct personality, all of whom create such a nice balance in this book. Jana is driven but lovable, Mars is a bad boy seeking redemption, Wyatt is sarcastic but supremely likable, and Arva is the voice of reason and responsibility.
The story moves incredibly quickly, and will keep readers engaged from beginning to end. And even though this story may be centered around a dark subject that is treated with humor, it has an uplifting side, too, showing that redemption is possible, that not everything is hopeless and that being selfless can have positive results.
This is a story not to be missed by readers who love books with a wicked sense of humor, an enormously inventive storyline and a refreshing look at life after death.
I consider this an absolute must read and look forward to much, much more from this author.Dead Rules Overview

The Lying Game ReviewIn the Lying game Emma finds herself stepping into the life of Sutton, her long lost (and dead) twin sister after seeing a video of a snuff film starring Sutton placed on the internet. The novel is narrated by the dead Sutton (who doesn't remember much of her life) who watches as Emma tries to find out who killed her. The matter is complicated by The Lying Game which is popular with Sutton and her friends which involves cruel pranks that often include making the victim feel as though she is the victim of a crime.
The Lying Game is by the author of Pretty Little Liars which is one of the novels that has been packaged by HarperTeen for multiple media distribution. The book reads like a TV show (and the TV show is already in pre-production) and is a very entertaining and fast read. The mystery is intriguing but does not resolve at the end of the book (all of the characters are still suspects) there is a bit of resolution regarding a clue but the reader is still left a bit unsatisfied with the ending. The back cover (of my ARC) presents the novel as part Pretty Little Liars and part Lovely bones and honestly that's giving far more credit than the novel should get. The book is fun and trashy but can't be compared with a novel like The Lovely Bones (although if you can use this to convince your child that she should read The Lovely Bones then go for it).
Appropriateness: This is one of those books that will give conservative parents lots of worry. There is plenty of sex talk (although no actual sex), lots of drinking (complete with drinking games), criminal activity, mean girl bullying and even a bit of drug use. As is common with this genre book there is also an obsessive amount of "label dropping" as the author describes all the clothing with super-high end labels (even Emma as a foster child is obsessed with designer clothes). However, the characters in the book in no way appear normal (they're super rich) and Emma quite frequently looks down on their bad behavior. I wouldn't give the book to a high reading elementary schooler but if your middle grade reader wants to read the book it would be good to use it as an opening to have discussions of how to deal with situations (such as being at a party where everyone is participating in a drinking game) that they may find themselves in when they're older.

Wherever You Go ReviewIt's hard to describe how much I loved this book. It's a little fantastical, a little paranormal, a lot emotional, and ridiculously wonderful.
This is the story of a girl whose head is just barely above water. Holly's boyfriend died last fall in a horrific car crash. Her mother is always working. Her sister is in need of constant supervision. Her grandfather joins their family when his Alzheimer's gets so bad that he can't be left alone. She has one friend at school and it seems like everyone else hates her. She has feelings for her dead boyfriend's best friend. It just can't get worse.
Her family is charming and wonderful, even when you want to scream at them in frustration. Her mother is just trying to keep her family afloat, even if it means working several jobs and spending little to no time at home. Her little sister has a good heart and is very lucky to have Holly there for a great role model. Her grandfather sinks farther and farther into the disease, descending where no one - except the ghost of Holly's boyfriend, Rob - can communicate with him. They're well-written and very realistic.
The teenagers in this book are also well done. You hate some of them, you can't help but love some of them, especially Jason, who can only be described as head-over-heels in love with Holly. He's so sweet, and despite the huge difference in their lifestyles, you definitely have to root for Holly and Jason to get together.
The ghost element was interesting. I admit that I was a little worried about this part, but Heather definitely pulled it off. It was subtle enough that you didn't feel like it was an overwhelmingly paranormal novel. In fact, Rob's parts were some of the most emotional in the book. To be a ghost, looking from the outside into the life that you used to live - it would be a truly terrible, painful thing.
And speaking of emotions: do not read this book unless you intend on being put through the emotional ringer. I cried buckets at several different times - and I am definitely not usually a crier. It takes a lot for me to tear up, but this book definitely got to me. Maybe it was the Holly's feeling of despair and utter hopelessness, Jason's sheer frustration that things couldn't go the way they should, Aldo's descent into a place where communication was no longer an option, or Rob's anger at being stuck in a place where no one but Aldo can see him - but he can see everything, including the things he doesn't want to see. It was very reminiscent of Sarah Dessen or Deb Caletti.
I was very impressed with the writing style. When I realized that three characters narrated - in three different types of speech - I worried. Holly's passages are written in first person past, Jason's in third person past, and Rob's in second person present. This is truly unique, but adds a unique and wonderful element to the story. Surprisingly enough, they flow from one to the next without disturbing the story whatsoever.
This was my first novel by Heather Davis and I'm thrilled. It was wonderful and I look forward to many more. I was definitely encouraged to seek out her previous novels.Wherever You Go Overview

Eyes to See (The Jeremiah Hunt Chronicle) ReviewEyes to See by Joseph Nassise
Urban fantasy at it's best, this book will make you pause the next time you hear a bump in the night.
Nassise has created a bold new protagonist in Jeremiah Hunt. Hunt is on an emotional quest which forces him to interact with Whisper and Scream. Whisper and Scream are ghosts. In addition his crusty emotional shell is attacked by Denise a witch.
Hunt's quest is impacted by that actions of a supernatural serial killer and a time capsule of occult nature. The action is outstanding as are the characterizations. You can feel Jeremiah's pain and frustration, Nassise does that good of a job.
I hesitate to mention Jim Butcher because the premise is just vaguely similar but the addictive quality of the story is far more so. I am pleased to see that this book is quantified as number one in a series. I, for one, am a new committed fan and will hopefully be reading and reviewing more of this prolific urban fantasy author's work.
I really enjoyed this book.
I highly recommend the book.

Between ReviewWow this is one of those books that once you pick up, you won't be able to put down. I think I finished this book in less than 48 hours. And the reason for that is because I had to sleep, if not I would have finished it faster. I love picking up a book that I can't put down. This book kind of reminds me of that book called "If I stay". But in a different light.
Elizabeth a.k.a. Liz is one of those girls from your typical high school movies that is just a popular rich, spoiled girl. Everyone wants to be like her or be her best friend. She can basically get anything she wants from her dad. However she wasn't always like that. She became a spoiled brat when her mom died and her father had started giving her everything she wanted.
For her eighteenth birthday, her father let her have a small party on their boat. And you can be sure that in that party, there was alcohol and drugs. So instead of waking up with a hangover the next day. They woke up to find Liz was floating dead in the water. But the key to this story is the person that found Liz was actually Liz herself.
Liz woke up to a thumping sound and went out to investigate it. To only find a body in the water but little did she know as she try to find the identity of the body, it was her very own. In her frazzled mind, she couldn't remember what happened that she ended up dead. She only remembered fragments of the previous nights events.
Now Liz is basically a spirit watching everything around her. She watches as her friends deal with her death and how her father handles losing yet another person in his life. But most of all she can go back into the past and see what she did and see the kind of person she was. So that changes everything. Being an outsider looking in, she can see how she wasn't the person she thought she was. In fact she was a person that she didn't like at all.
There's more missing in this review, but I feel I gave you enough spoilers. Yes this book comes to a good end but it's the road the characters take to get to the end that makes this the book it is. I absolutely loved this book. I feel it's a good book for all teens to read, because due to drinking alcohol and doing drugs a tragedy happens. So it's kind of setting an example. One of my best this year! 5 stars for sure! And a definite "Good Choice for Reading"!

Echoes of a Haunting - Revisited ReviewWith non-fiction writings of paranormal activity one of my favorite genre's, I have read quite a few books throughout the years. Nothing seems to scare me, or make me uneasy in my own home, so you can imagine my surprise when a few chapters into the book, I found myself looking around my dark room- and turning on a few lights!! The author has a way of making you "live" through the ordeals- and was sad when the book was over. I finished it in a few nights only because I could not put it down!!! I am also pleased that the author explains the importance of having an open mind when reading her story- she gives you the option to believe it or not. Dark Souls: A Novel ReviewA good friend at a local indie heard me raving over Paula Morris' Ruined. When the ARC for Dark Souls came in she saved it for me and surprised me with it last a short time ago and I could not resist starting it as soon as I was able. I am really not a ghost story fan. But, I really love Paula Morris' writing. She really tells a good story. I will start with the cover. It is haunting but, I really like it. The cobblestone streets and the whole 'Old England' appeal to it just draw me in and I imagine there really is a street that looks like this in York.
We have a set of new characters in Dark Souls. I have to admit I was hoping there was more New Orleans in this one. But, one of the things that this author does so well is set a scene. She does an excellent job of helping you feel as if you are actually seeing the buildings, streets and people yourself. She does not overdo it by inundating us with what someone is wearing or what the furniture looks like. She gives us what is pivotal to the story. She just has a way of making you see the picture in your head if you are visual reader like me.
In Dark Souls a family tragedy has turned the Tennant family's world upside down. They decide to take advantage of both parents having a chance to do some visiting work in York, England, and make it a family vacation. Miranda, the curious intelligent protagonist of the story, has come to England with what might be seen as a gift or a curse. As she works her way through it alone she becomes engulfed in a mystery that has its basis in the early 1800's and is one of the pivotal moments in York, England's history. The story is well written and supports my initial reaction to Paula Morris' writing skills and I look forward to where she takes us to visit next.
