Skunk Girl ReviewPlot: Girl notices Hottie. Sometimes in these sorts of books, the heroine has an interest besides boys, but not really here. So you expect the book to be mostly about getting the guy. Usually, the formula for these books go: Girl notices Hottie. Girl comes up with some kind of scheme to snare the Hottie. Wacky misunderstandings result. Girl gains self-respect and winds up with a guy who is not nearly as hot, but more compatible. There are variations, but these kinds of books have been around forever. This is not that kind of book.
Nina, the heroine is likeable and sympathetic but passive. If you are expecting there to be some kind of hookup or drama, you will be waiting quite awhile. For example, there is a Queen Bee ordered straight from central casting, and she and the heroine don't get along, so you expect that there will be some kind of confrontation. Which there finally is - on page 176. Then there's the hookup which only lasts a chapter. I kept waiting for Nina to do something proactive instead of just pine after the Hottie. I waited in vain for her to sneak around behind her parents' back, or for her to confront her parents, or her older sister to drop a bombshell, like that she's a lesbian or is dating a white guy. Something, anything to put some drama in the story. By page 90 or so, I wasn't picky. To mix mediums, I wish she were more like the girl in the movie "Bend it Like Beckham," who was also a Pakistani Muslim teen (I think) and who defied her traditional family so that she could play on a women's soccer team. Books are not usually written about people who follow the rules almost all the time. If they did, there would be little drama and even less story. Teens of every ethnicity get embarrassed by their parents, feel their parents don't understand them, etc., etc. While reading about another culture is fascinating, there has to be something more to sustain the story.

Dead Rules ReviewIt was supposed to be Jana and Michael, Webster and Haynes, for always. She wasn't supposed to die. Their future was all mapped out. They were supposed to be together. Forever.
But if she had to die, then he should be with her. He was Romeo to her Juliet. And without Juliet there was no Romeo. Romeo couldn't live without Juliet and so he followed her in death.
Michael should not have wanted to exist without her for a single moment. Her death should have meant something.
So where was he?
Jana was forced to ride the bus to Dead School alone. And with each passing moment she was forgetting little details from her life. She didn't want to forget Michael. Not his face, not his voice, nothing. He was her everything and she was his, but yet she sat here alone.
Death would not separate the two of them. She wouldn't let it. They would be together. Even if it meant she had to kill him to bring him to her.
***
Dead Rules is the wildly funny, dark and disturbing, yet light, and at times sweet, debut young adult novel from author Randy Russell. This exceptional story pulls you in from the very first lines and is an extremely fast, incredibly ironic and immensely entertaining read.
The story is told mainly from Jana's perspective - a girl who met her untimely demise in what appears to be a freak bowling accident - with a few alternate perspectives and peeks at the world of the living throughout.
As awareness slowly dawns on Jana about her new situation and the fact that she is separated from the love of her life, she becomes determined to make sure that she and Michael are reunited.
And if she can't convince him to join her in death, then she plans on taking matters into her own hands to ensure that the two of them are together, forever.
The author has written an exceedingly creative one-of-a-kind story with Dead Rules. Each character has such a distinct personality, all of whom create such a nice balance in this book. Jana is driven but lovable, Mars is a bad boy seeking redemption, Wyatt is sarcastic but supremely likable, and Arva is the voice of reason and responsibility.
The story moves incredibly quickly, and will keep readers engaged from beginning to end. And even though this story may be centered around a dark subject that is treated with humor, it has an uplifting side, too, showing that redemption is possible, that not everything is hopeless and that being selfless can have positive results.
This is a story not to be missed by readers who love books with a wicked sense of humor, an enormously inventive storyline and a refreshing look at life after death.
I consider this an absolute must read and look forward to much, much more from this author.Dead Rules Overview

First Day on Earth ReviewMal is angry. His father left with no explanation and his mother is more than useless. School is no picnic and he only sort of has friends. Then he meets Hooper. Hooper claims to be an extraterrestrial. At first Mal doesn't believe him, but why shouldn't he. Why couldn't Hooper be from another planet?
This was a nice little novel about a lot of things. On the surface it was about space, aliens, a kid struggling in life. This novel dealt a lot with belief. Defining your own beliefs can be hard, and allowing others theirs even when they conflict with your ideas. This novel had the same feel to it as How to Say Goodbye in Robot. They both had this laid-back and inquisitive feel to them. Some kids carving out a place for themselves, gathering misfits along the way. This is a novel that will leave you thinking about it, long after you finish. Cecil Castellucci leaves some questions unanswered and it works perfectly. As a reader, you are left to contemplate your beliefs. Depending on how you feel, depends on how you think the novel ends. I love that this book forces you to look inside and come to your own conclusions, and not because the novel isn't finished, but because it's open for interpretation. Mal and Hooper and very interesting characters. Mal isn't overly unique, sort of the lonely, brooding, outcast, but he is still a very interesting person. There's a lot going on in his life, and even though he's angry, he seems to roll with it easily. Definitely check this novel out soon. It's a quick read you won't regret.
First Line:
"You think you know what I am, the kid slumped in his chair in the back row, with greasy hair, wearing all black."
Favorite Lines:
"My life sucks. So I shave my head."
"Hello and good-bye are not as simple as everyone thinks."

Millennium People ReviewJust about finished with the English version of Millennium People. (Since there's no translation involved, why does an English book like this take so long to come out in America? Does it really take a year to change double quotes to single quotes?) Like his two previous novels, Ballard uses the mystery for a plot device, and while in Cocaine Nights and Super Cannes, he came to the form cold in his old age, but immediately asserted his mastery, in Millennium People, he falters somewhat with his resolution of the mystery.
Moving away from his familiar theme of how the jaded West has to keep ratcheting up how it gets his kicks, he deals with senseless terrorism. Prescient, especially in light of the March 2004 attack on a hotel in Baghdad, which set a new low in terrorism in that it didn't seem to have any victims targeted. That is, Iraqis and Arabs were killed. Its aim seemed simply to create chaos like in Millennium People. While the plot is not Ballard's best, he still imbues his characters with these drop-dead little quirks that illuminates them in one line of text.
Millennium People does little to discredit him in this reviewer's eyes as the leading serious novelist in the English language. A must read for followers, and not a bad start for those new to Ballard.Millennium People Overview

Drink, Slay, Love ReviewI've been steering clear of vampire novels recently, mainly because the market is over flooded and they all appear to be the same. "Drink, Slay, Love" is different though. It's hilarious. It's charming. It's everything I want in a book. Pearl? She's just awesome.
The story starts out with Pearl, a sixteen year old vampire, while she's out on a hunt. She's visiting the Dairy Hut, her favorite place to `snack', when she's stabbed by a unicorn. It sounds ridiculous because it is ridiculous, but given that the story isn't meant to be taken seriously, it works. After she's stabbed by the unicorn, she begins to change. She's able to walk in sunlight now, and her family uses it to their advantage. They'll be hosting the feast for the Vampire King of New England and they are going to need as much food as possible to serve their hungry guests. They send her to high-school in order for Pearl to make friends (after all, they need to be invited inside of their prey's homes). But Pearl suddenly begins to develop a conscience - she actually cares about the humans, something she never thought possible. She struggles to maintain her vampire instincts while also adapting to the human world. Not wanting to spoil the story, I'll just say this: if you like vampires and you enjoy laughing you need to read this book. Plain and simple.
I adored Pearl and Evan (oh, Evan). I enjoyed the fact that "Drink, Slay, Love" didn't take itself seriously. In fact, I don't think there's much I didn't like about this book. It was an incredibly fun read.
