First Day on Earth ReviewMal is angry. His father left with no explanation and his mother is more than useless. School is no picnic and he only sort of has friends. Then he meets Hooper. Hooper claims to be an extraterrestrial. At first Mal doesn't believe him, but why shouldn't he. Why couldn't Hooper be from another planet?
This was a nice little novel about a lot of things. On the surface it was about space, aliens, a kid struggling in life. This novel dealt a lot with belief. Defining your own beliefs can be hard, and allowing others theirs even when they conflict with your ideas. This novel had the same feel to it as How to Say Goodbye in Robot. They both had this laid-back and inquisitive feel to them. Some kids carving out a place for themselves, gathering misfits along the way. This is a novel that will leave you thinking about it, long after you finish. Cecil Castellucci leaves some questions unanswered and it works perfectly. As a reader, you are left to contemplate your beliefs. Depending on how you feel, depends on how you think the novel ends. I love that this book forces you to look inside and come to your own conclusions, and not because the novel isn't finished, but because it's open for interpretation. Mal and Hooper and very interesting characters. Mal isn't overly unique, sort of the lonely, brooding, outcast, but he is still a very interesting person. There's a lot going on in his life, and even though he's angry, he seems to roll with it easily. Definitely check this novel out soon. It's a quick read you won't regret.
First Line:
"You think you know what I am, the kid slumped in his chair in the back row, with greasy hair, wearing all black."
Favorite Lines:
"My life sucks. So I shave my head."
"Hello and good-bye are not as simple as everyone thinks."

Dark Inside ReviewThere are so many good books out there. Books that make me laugh, that make me think, that scare me, and many that I recommend to friends. It is a rare thing, in my mind, to uncover a GREAT book. A novel that makes me sit up and take note. For me, Dark Inside (by Jeyn Roberts) is one of those rare finds. It's been a long, long time - probably since I first read the Hunger Games books, that I would have run out to buy the next book had there been one. I sat around wanting to read more, hours later finding my mind back inside that world, with those characters, that fascinated and horrified me.
Goodreads describes it as 28 Days Later meets The Road, and it is a novel about the apocalypse, but one unlike any other that has passed through my hands this past year. This one isn't due to something supernatural, something paranormal, or anything too hard to believe. It's caused when those dark recesses of humanity, the ones we suppress and beat back, rise up and take over.
As a historian, this concept fascinates me. The author alludes to this being the driving force behind the fall of every great civilization, and there's something to that. Most great cultures have shown marked disintegration of their collective morality during the centuries leading up to their undoing.
I won't tell you anything more specific, because this is a beautiful, philosophical, thought-provoking story. Peeling away the layers will be more satisfying when you jam them under your own fingernails. I will say this: the characters are REAL. They're flawed, they do bad things, and they struggle with not giving into the darkness themselves. There are four POV characters, all of whom I felt connected to (some more than others, of course) but any of their deaths would have devastated me. There is a fifth POV, a character known as Nothing, who is slipping back and forth between the darkness trying to claim his soul and the tattered remains of his humanity, and that character tells us so much in his broken, anonymous words.Dark Inside Overview

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer ReviewWho is Mara Dyer?
Even she doesn't know. When Mara, at least that's the name she's given herself, wakes up in a hospital bed with no memory how she got there, or even who she is. Suddenly dropped into a life that just doesn't feel right, she learns that there are unexpected consequences to the accident, consequences that could destroy her. Not only must she deal with her new life, and a new love, but as the pieces of the past start to surface, Mara finds that they are more disturbing than she could ever imagine, especially when she finds herself seeing the past and the future. She can't explain it, and neither can her therapist.
I've been expecting a lot from Mara Dyer. It's probably one of the most hyped YA novels in the blogosphere this year, including some serious BEA coverage that only made me (and other readers) desperate to find out who exactly this Mara Dyer is. I was beyond thrilled when this gem showed up in my mailbox, and it completely lives up to the hype and, in my mind, exceeded it.
Author Michelle Hodkin offers a fascinating new character trying to find her way while balancing her past. Not only is Mara's amnesia well-handled, but when Mara starts to visit therapists and mental institutions, her descent into madness, mayhem and chaos feels real, honest and frightening. Hodkin perfectly handles the shifts between past, present and future, and by the end of the novel, I had become so familiar with Mara Dyer that she felt like a long-time friend. I was on Mara's side, no matter what, and I wanted her to, somehow, survive her own unbecoming.
An incredibly lyrical and fabulously-written book that explores the fascinating darkness of humanity and the frightening descent into madness. From an incredible opening to an explosive ending, I was riveting to Mara's story on every page. But, beware: this story ends on something of a mild cliff-hanger, and while I'm not sure if there will be sequels, the ending screams for one.
Probably one of my top books of 2011.The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer Overview
