Gang Leader for a Day: A Rogue Sociologist Takes to the Streets ReviewThus Reggie, a Chicago gang member, warned the author of this book. Thank goodness, Venkatesh wasn't frightened away, and the consequence is this narrative about a Chicago crack-dealing gang.
I first learned something about life in a Chicago housing project when I read David Isay's heartbreaking Our America: Life and Death on the South Side of Chicago (1999), and something about the street drug trade in David Simons and Edward Burns' grueling The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood (1998). Both have become classics. Sudhir Venkatesh's Gang Leader for a Day is, I believe, destined to join them as an on-the-spot narrative of gang culture of Chicago. Some of the people whose lives he tracks--J.T., Clarisse, Mama and Pops Patton, Reggie, Millie, T-Bone--grow on you until you feel as if you actually know them.
While a graduate student at the University of Chicago, weary of cold statistical analysis, Venkatesh began hanging out with the Black Kings, a crack-selling gang who headquartered in the Robert Taylor Homes projects. He wanted to get in touch with the gang subculture through direct observation. He entered into the project pretty naive and just a bit too full of himself. Seven years later, after following the Black Kings and establishing a relationship with their leader, one J.T., the things he'd seen and heard made him a lot more streetwise and a little less cocky.
During his seven-year study, "Mr. Professor," as J.T.'s mother initially called Venkatesh, learned that Chicago gangs, or at least J.T.'s outfit, lived in a culture of violence and machismo, but also functioned in an unexpected way as police in their own territory. From the perspective of society, they were lawbreakers. But at Robert Taylor Homes, they were also lawmakers, keeping a tight rein on adventitious violence and, through acts of "philanthropy," keeping the local economy fueled with drug money.
He discovered about halfway through his research with the Black Kings that he'd witnessed or heard about so many gang and drug deal activities that he'd do well to seek legal advice. When he did, he discovered (to his discomfort) that there was no such thing under the law as "researcher-client confidentiality," and that he was in a vulnerable legal position. At one point during his project, he actually worried that "he was falling into a hole [of criminality] I could never dig myself out of" (p. 250)
He realized that getting wounded in gang violence nine times out of ten meant either that nobody would call an ambulance for you, or if they did, that no ambulance would make a run into the inner city war zone to pick you up.
He learned that there's a city-wide organization and hierarchy when it comes to many Chicago gangs, including the Black Kings.
And from spending all this time with pushers, junkies, gangsters, civilians, hookers, and cops, and learning firsthand about their lives, he learned that it's risky to make holier-than-thou comparisons. When he bade J.T. farewell, for example, Venkatesh mentioned to the gangleader that he wasn't sure he was ready to jump into another longterm research project. J.T. cannily observed that there was little else Venkatesh was qualified to do. "You can't fix nothing, you never worked a day in your life. The only think you know how to do is hang out with n-----s like us" (p. 281).
An excellent, fascinating book, sometimes frightening, at other times unspeakably sad, and at still others funny: but always with the feel of authenticity and never sentimental. Highly recommended, as is his American Project: The Rise and Fall of a Modern Ghetto (2002) and especially his recent (2006) Off the Books: The Underground Economy of the Urban Poor. In fact, the latter book could easily be read as a companion volume to Gang Leader for a Day.

A Christmas Blizzard ReviewChristmas novels are always nice to read, however this one of Garrison Keillor's is a bit different from what you might expect. It is not the sweet stories of the PBS show Prairie Home Companion, especially when you read in the first 2 pages that Mr. Sparrow, the main character, hates Christmas - the red-green monster - the world's longest and unhappiest holiday with the sheer horror of `The Little Drummer Boy'.
This story contains a lot of Midwestern guilt and woe, but yet its' little continual gems of exaggeration keep the humor alive: " it wasn't like her to fall apart like that, she being a member of the National rifle Association".
James Sparrow needs to learn to love Christmas, as his wife Joyce does and also get over his fear of freezing his tongue to pump handles- their siren call where he has to force himself to keep his tongue in his mouth and not on car door handles or bronze busts of Studs Terkel. His past contains among other problems; a mother who was obsessed by worries of the Christmas tree catching fire. James flies home to Looseleaf, North Dakota where he encounters his past in the form of a dead friend who is now a wolf. A big haired airline ticket lady, a cousin who is plotting to overthrow the US government and is married to an undercover FBI agent who has married her to keep an eye on her.
Through all the humorous absurdities James is rescued from his fears, the blizzard, potential arrest, learns to love Christmas, but most of all discovers the moral of the story: that small kindnesses can create great good...as good a moral as any for a Christmas book

Building Blocks, The John Hancock Center ReviewThe introduction by the engineer's daughter gives some great inside info on the building. The pictures of Stollers give a great perspective of the building and show it during construction as well as just after completion and opening in the seventies. At the back there are great scaled floor plans that really give a sense of the building layout and design. i would definetly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in architecture in general or specifically the John Hancock Center.Building Blocks, The John Hancock Center Overview

The Man Who Got Away: The Bugs Moran Story--A Biography ReviewFinally, the untold story of George "Bugs" Moran. Previously largely a footnote to the life of Al Capone and recalled mainly as the guy who lost his gang in the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, Moran was a legend in his own time yet has always remained a man of mystery whose birth and background were early obscured by rumor and misinformation. Thanks to Rose Keefe, a wonderful writer and researcher and one of the rising stars of historical crime, we now have the complete and fascinating account of his life, from his Minnesota childhood to his equally intriguing post-Prohibition career as an independent criminal. An excellent companion to Rose's previous biography of Dean O'Banion (Guns and Roses, also highly recommended) and a marvelous uncovering of one of America's underworld legends that will leave you dying for more. Rose has captured The Man Who Got Away--something even Capone couldn't do!The Man Who Got Away: The Bugs Moran Story--A Biography Overview

A Ticket to Die for (Wild Onion Ltd. Mysteries) ReviewIn Chicago, Dugan is the lawyer and Kirsten is the private investigator in this married team. Kirsten asks Dugan to assist on a case in which she needs to speak with Lynn Bulasik, a witness to a conversation between ambulance chasing attorney Larry Candle and one of his clients. Kirsten takes her spouse to Cousin Freddy's, an adult store that caters to a mature audience wanting to buy assorted adult media and novelty items. However, when they enter the store, they find Lynn dead, courtesy of a broken neck.
After spending several hours with the Chicago police, Kirsten and Dugan leave. He wonders out loud why the big city cops are interested when the hit took place in the suburbs? Kirsten calmly explains to Dugan that the killing is mob-related, which means that the married couple could be marked for death next. The pair struggles to stay out of harms way even as Kirsten continues to help her client, the shyster Larry. More people are killed, making it even more dangerous for the dynamic duo.
David J. Walker, author of the Mal Foley series, writes a new Chicago-based mystery, starring two lovable characters that will garner reader attention. TICKET TO DIE FOR has an engrossing who-done-it that will pique reader interest and the cast of characters add depth and Midwest color to the novel. However, it is the witty dialogue between the unusual married couple that turn this into a terrific tale that will bring fans back for more books in a series that has the making of a long friendship.

A Bad Night's Sleep: A Mystery (Joseph Kozmarski) ReviewIn Chicago the Southshore Corporation Vice President Jen Horlache hires detective Joe Kozmarski to stake out their construction site where thefts of materials and equipment has been costly in terms of time and money. Kozmarski notices a gang loading spools of copper wire when a police cruiser stops. Two cops in blue join the loading line.
Kozmarski calls 911 and police quickly arrive. A gunfight erupts and the private detective kills one of the thieves, who like his burglar companions, turns out to be a cop. CPD Lieutenant Bill Gubman enlists his former police officer who was kicked off the force to go undercover and join the gang. However, Kozmarski soon finds the thieves and the honest cops distrust him, but not all of them want him dead; only some do.
The latest Chicago private investigative Kozmarski Noir (see The Last Striptease and The Bad Kitty Lounge) is a terrific gritty thriller that grips the audience with the opening shootout and never takes a respite as the beleaguered hero struggles to survive on the mean streets. Kozmarski trusts no one as cops and robbers have placed the Scarlet Letter of D for dead on his head. Readers will have A Bad Night's Sleep as this exciting tale is difficult to put down.

Chicago From The Sky: A Region Transformed ReviewIf you know someone who loves Chicago -- don't hesitate to give them this spectacular book! And once you see it, you will want one for yourself as well. The photography is spectacular; the city looks as beautiful from the air as it does from the ground. But more than that, Okrent has a keen eye for unusual perspective and interesting juxtapositions. The photographs are paired, "then and now" with just enough text to inform but not distract from the pictures. Yes, it is a "coffee table book" in some ways. But it is one you will actually read from cover to cover and pick up more than once. And Okrent's unifying thesis about change ties it all together without pedantics.Chicago From The Sky: A Region Transformed Overview
