Hangman: A Decker/Lazarus Novel ReviewI have read most of the novels in this series. I think I've missed a couple of the more recent installments, but all in all I've been a pretty loyal follower of Ms. Kellerman's work. Pete Decker and Rina Lazarus have always been two of the most unique characters in crime fiction, and the way Ms. Kellerman mixed together religion with crime and also managed to include an overriding commitment to family has always resulted in novels that were well written page turners that I really enjoyed. I am very puzzled over what happened with this one!
I think this book was in sore need of a good editor. There were many instances where words were left out or repeated twice. I am a fast reader, and these were like stop signs on the road, or scratches on a DVD. Very distracting. The pacing of this book seemed off, and I have never read a Kellerman book that was so lacking in suspense throughout the entire story. I know that her novels are heavier on the procedural aspects than some, but jeesh this was ridiculous. Give me something to keep those pages turning other than curiosity about a 13 year old piano genius. Facts were often repeated, and different characters seemed to say the same things over and over again.
I wanted more Rina in this one. She's a great character and I wish we would have seen more of her along with other members of Pete's family. They had almost no role to play except for limited involvement with the Gabe/Chris sub-plot. Speaking of which, I really wish we could have had more of that story! It was way more interesting than the main crime plot involving Garth/Adrienne/Crystal. I didn't care a whit about any of those characters, while Gabe, Chris and Terry were all very interesting and I felt vested in finding out their fates.
The writing was a big disappointment. Dialogue was stilted in spots, and I became extremely frustrated when every chapter or section ended with a cliched tag line that was usually very corny and melodramatic. Marge's dialogue here was the worst offender. Marge used to be an actual person, but in this book she seemed reduced to a caricature, and all we learned about her was what she was wearing. I was really tired of hearing about her clothes and hearing her utter cliches that seemed to be straight off Law and Order.
The ending resolved all outstanding issues, but did so in a way that was not dramatic and very unsatisfying. I am sad to say that I will be very cautious about picking up another Decker/Lazarus mystery. This series seems to have lost its heart. Not a recommend.

Stone Cold: A Jesse Stone Novel ReviewRobert Parker has created an enigma with his character Jesse Stone. Just when you are sure that you know what Jesse will choose to do next, you are surprised.
In this novel, a pair of serial murderers is running rampant in Jesse Stone's small town. The motive is unfathomable, but then, they ARE serial killers. While Jesse and his police force track the killers, not only the why, but the who will be next question hangs densely in the air.
While the investigation proceeds, Jesse becomes more or less involved with a couple of different women, when his ex-wife enters the picture.
In the center of this novel is the third line of the story involving a young girl who claims to have been raped by some of the jocks at her school. The way Jesse handles this investigation is a wonderful new facet to this character.
The mix of emotions is nearly volatile, and as another murder occurs, you begin to wonder how will Robert PArker bring the story together. I thought the serial killers were a little vague, as characters, but still the surprising twists and turns of this author never fail to capture the readers full attention.Stone Cold: A Jesse Stone Novel Overview

The Wikkeling ReviewThe Wikkeling announces to the world that it is a unique read even before you open the cover. It's size, cover art, texture and fonts all mark this one as different and hopefully help it stand out. This is above all else a good story. It's hard to say that about a lot of children's books these days, as author's strive to capture the attention of a young audience that often times seems too busy to remember to read, or too dazzled by modern technology to remember the joy to be had in reading a good book. Interestingly enough, this is an issue addressed in this folk tale that seems to be laid over a science fiction story. It's a dystopian tale that includes it's own boogey man of legend, all set to scare the kiddos.
This story works on many levels and achieves that magical goal of being a book that both children and adults can enjoy. The author sets up his society by turning a critical eye on our current education system, our reliance on technology, and our scorn for all things old. Adults will appreciate his portrait of endless traffic jams,constant cell phone communication, and parents who have gone so overboard in protecting their children, they are no longer allowed to imagine and explore. Kids will appreciate our intrepid trio of misfits that find the courage to confront their fears and discover how capable and smart they really are.
I love the art in this book, done entirely in black shadows. It adds to the old fashioned feel of the story, however I'm not sure if it adds to this books "curb appeal". I plan on recommending it to any library patron who is a fan of fantasy and adventure stories. It is unique, incredibly well told, and will be a quick read for anyone grades five and up. Libraries, books and how we value them play an important role, so that marks it as a winner right there. Great characters, important lessons to be learned, original world building, and creepy adventure. Give this one a try. You won't regret it.The Wikkeling Overview

In her last outing, "S" IS FOR SILENCE, Grafton altered her style a bit, actually entering other characters' points of view to tell parts of the story so that they shared the narrating duties with Kinsey herself. With this new novel, that device is used to chilling effect--between reports from Kinsey, we enter the mind of a woman who is possibly her most twisted adversary to date.
Solana Rojas is a caregiver, a home-help nurse's aide much like the thousands you'll find all over America. But the woman assigned to care for Kinsey's elderly friend is not your usual "angel of mercy." For one thing, she is not the real Solana Rojas--she has stolen that woman's identity. And she has plans. To tell you more of the plot would be--well, criminal.
The best aspect of Grafton's excellent series is her ability to keep up with current social and legal problems, despite the fact that Kinsey's stories are set somewhere in the 1980s. In this novel we have identity theft, the inherent problems of home care, and--perhaps most disturbing--the tendency of society in general to ignore and/or mistreat our most vulnerable citizens. At least this elderly victim has Kinsey Millhone as a champion. And what a champion she is! "T" IS FOR TRESPASS will captivate longtime Grafton fans, and it should make her a lot of new fans as well. David J. Walker, author of the Mal Foley series, writes a new Chicago-based mystery, starring two lovable characters that will garner reader attention. TICKET TO DIE FOR has an engrossing who-done-it that will pique reader interest and the cast of characters add depth and Midwest color to the novel. However, it is the witty dialogue between the unusual married couple that turn this into a terrific tale that will bring fans back for more books in a series that has the making of a long friendship.

The latest Chicago private investigative Kozmarski Noir (see The Last Striptease and The Bad Kitty Lounge) is a terrific gritty thriller that grips the audience with the opening shootout and never takes a respite as the beleaguered hero struggles to survive on the mean streets. Kozmarski trusts no one as cops and robbers have placed the Scarlet Letter of D for dead on his head. Readers will have A Bad Night's Sleep as this exciting tale is difficult to put down.

Deadly Threads (Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries) ReviewJosie Prescott is the owner of Prescott's Antiques & Auctions. While teaching a workshop on vintage clothing, she discovers the strangled body of her friend and guest lecturer, Riley Jordan, hidden beneath a display table. Employees and workshop attendees fall under suspicion. Also a suspect is the philandering, celebrity chef husband, Bobby Jordan. Hank, the adopted, stray cat, finds an invaluable clue, a pearl rosette button; it is the key to solving the crime. An employee, Gretchen Brock, caught a glimpse of the killer's silver car; soon afterwards, numerous attempts are made on her life. Josie must find the killer before he/she succeeds in giving Gretchen a case of permanent amnesia.
"Deadly Threads" is an entertaining cozy in Jane K. Cleland's highly successful Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries series. Once again, Josie must become an amateur sleuth in solving a murder connected to her antique store. She reminds me of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. Old-fashioned clues in the form of vintage clothing - not modern, forensic evidence - are used to identify the murderer. Josie is very dependent on the local police force and media for supplying her with valuable information, and vice versa. She can't solve the murder without the aid of Chief Ellis Hunter and Wes Smith, the investigative reporter for the "Seacoast Star."
The killer's identity came as a great surprise; I never suspected this person. However, he/she spent at least ten minutes providing an unprovoked confession that probably won't be permissible in court. Fortunately, there is a large quantity of other evidence to convict him/her. I found the confession unrealistic as I did other elements of the story. Prescott's Antiques & Auctions is too perfect. The boss is very understanding and accommodating and all the employees love each other. I work with mostly women and there is constant whining, complaining and backstabbing; it's a veritable war zone. At Prescott's, the birds are always singing, the coffee is always percolating and everyone is munching on Cara's home-baked cookies. Reading "Deadly Threads" nearly gave me a toothache; this novel is very sappy sweet.
I like cozies that make me laugh out loud; "Deadly Threads" did not. The only time I snickered was when Gretchen referred to herself as a cookie ho. Furthermore, the quaint, coastal village of Rocky Point, New Hampshire, with its friendly, affluent citizens, is the typical cozy setting; it is not a unique one. Josie's finding of clues and the occasional attack on her employee, Gretchen, help propel the plot onward; however, another murder would've greatly added impetus. As it was, there were times when the overall plot became stagnant. Josie overreacting to every dilemma grew tiresome.
In all fairness, I did find "Deadly Threads" to be very romantic. It deals much with love - love won and love lost. Old relationships, such as the one Josie shares with Ty Alverez, are being strengthened and new relationships, such as the one Gretchen has with Jack Stene, are blossoming. Riley Jordan, the reader learns, was a very generous, remarkable woman, which made her death the more tragic. Also, from reading this novel, I learned more about the time consuming, often arduous, task involved in appraising antiques, especially vintage clothing. I also learned some interesting tips on how to distinguish genuine pearls from their synthetic counterparts.
"Deadly Threads" is recommended for those readers who like their cozies sweet and charming. It is for readers who want an intelligent, but vulnerable, female heroine; they are readers who also fantasize about working in the perfect company where all the employees love each other and the boss is sympathetic, patient and understanding. Women, like my mom, who love and collect antiques, will want to read "Deadly Threads" as well as its predecessors in the Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries series. Readers should be warned that it is not hilarious like other cozies such as Parnell Hall's "The KenKen Killings," Laura DiSilverio's "Swift Justice" and Joelle Charbonneau's "Skating Around the Law."Joseph B. The story opens during the week between Christmas Eve and New Year's in the Kootenay Mountains and deep forests of Trafalgar, British Columbia, a peaceful resort town that is filled at the moment with vacationing skiers. It's also where Mother Nature has seemingly removed all colors from her palette except for black and white.
As a heavy snowstorm blankets Trafalgar into a Christmas fairyland, events turn ominous when two young men, visiting skiers and lifelong-friends, are found dead after their car plunges beneath the ice of the frozen Upper Kootenay River. It seems at first that a simple tragedy has occurred. Yet after the coroner discovers that one of the men had been dead at least a day prior to the fatal crash, Constable Molly Smith and Sergeant John Winters are summoned into the lives of the young vacationers whose privileged lifestyles include limitless wealth, drugs, predatory sexual encounters, and other dark secrets.
Delany's writing style is crisp and well-paced. I found it a definite pleasure to meet and spend time with her very human and memorable protagonist. She holds her reader to the page until the very end of this enjoyable mystery.

The Cleveland Creep (Milan Jacovich Mysteries #15) ReviewLes Roberts has come up with a new twist in his latest book featuring our favourite detective , Milan Jacovich. The author manages to treat the delicate and tragic subject of child pornography tied in with murder and unrequited love in an entertaining and unique manner while devising a tale which has twists and turns preventing the reader from learning who the culprit is until the very end.
I enjoyed the suspense Roberts created throughout the book leading us and Jacovich down back alleys only to find that we were barking up the wrong tree . Finally I very much enjoyed the introduction of a new character, K.O. who I am hopeful ,will provide us with Jacovich's youthful alter ego in future tales Roberts will offer us for our reading enjoyment.
Highly recommended reading .

The Rabbit Factory: A Lomax & Biggs Mystery ReviewMarshall Karp's first novel The Rabbit Factory is a mega-winner that gives a whole new meaning to the police procedural. This novel is a must-read for those looking for something new and original in fiction, especially fans of mystery thrillers.
Set in Hollywood's Lamaar Studios "Family Land," (a theme park similar to Disneyland...but NOT), the gruesome murder of Rambunctious Rabbit kick-starts the storyline. Rambunctious is a huge, big-footed hare dressed in signature red, white and blue, (translate the long-eared, burrowing mammal version of Mickey Mouse). Eddie Elkins, a sex offender, child molester and convicted pedophile plays the part of this particular rabbit...but not for long. Elkins, who had paid the proverbial "pretty penny" for a new identity, was only on the job for six weeks before being brutally strangled during a cigarette break. And this is only the first of many murders to come which will effect Lamaar's bottom line, not to mention the victims' families lives.
Mike Lomax and Terry Biggs are the duo from LAPD heading the investigation - and these two guys are the BEST!!! Mike is a recent widower whose wife sends him love letters from beyond the grave. And Terry thinks he is a comedian - "Terry the Fun Homicide Cop!" Hah!! The chemistry and humor between the two detectives is fantastic! Minor characters, especially Big Jim, Lomax's hulking teamster father, are well drawn and extremely appealing.
The Rabbit Factory is one of the most entertaining books I have read in many a moon. The murder mystery is gripping, filled with suspense, and the characters are compelling as are the subplots. What's not to like??
I predict this one will skyrocket to the top of the bestseller lists...and it deserves too!

Behind the Seams (A Crochet Mystery) Review"Behind the Seams" is a cozy mystery with a crochet theme. It's the sixth book in the series, but it can be read as a stand-alone and doesn't spoil the mysteries in the previous books.
The whodunit was on my list of possible suspects from the start, and I was certain of whodunit long before Molly was. However, the clues weren't obvious, so it was believable that Molly and friends didn't suspect. I found it less believable that Molly kept getting arrested because she was near a crime and due to misunderstandings. The being arrested part, maybe, but not the number of times within a matter of days.
The suspense was created by Nell potentially being arrested for murder and the relationship tensions between Molly and her boyfriend. It was clear that Molly wasn't committed to the relationship, though. While it was realistic that she took some time to realize this, it lacked the intended tension and so these sections felt slow to me. It might have been more suspenseful if I'd read the previous books.
There were also several scenes that headed toward a very exciting climax then jumped in time until the scene was over (which was confusing) and then had people discussing what had happened. This also cut down on some of the potential tension and excitement.
While the mystery part of the story was completely wrapped up, the author added a relationship cliff-hanger to the last paragraph of the book. But with the guy I didn't like.
Basically, I was left feeling like it should have been a really exciting, interesting book. It had all the right elements. But due to some of the writing choices, the excitement didn't engage me like it could have.
Kissing and such were only implied. There were no sex scenes. There was no bad language. Overall, it was an interesting cozy mystery with an interesting crochet method described in the story and in more detail in the back.

The Sixes: A Novel ReviewHere are six reasons why I found The Sixes less than satisfying (minor spoilers):
1. The Implausible Set Up. I'm happy to suspend disbelief, but this book stretches even my credulity. I highly doubt any respectable college would hire someone accused on plagiarism. And even in fiction, reasonably intelligent people call the police when their home is repeatedly broken into and their safety threatened.
2. The Shallow Characterisation. None of the characters ring true; they're all one-dimensional. The author meticulously describes what everyone is wearing, but never digs beneath the facade. Phoebe is bland and far too trusting for someone who supposedly used to dig up dirt for a living. Best friend Glenda is a driven career woman, so focused on her job she fails to notice that her marriage is disintegrating. Love interest Duncan is stereotypically handsome and brooding with a mysterious past.
3. The Dull Villains. The girls in the Sixes are more mild than mean. They don't pose a credible threat and, in the end, aren't even involved in the murder.
4. The Total Lack of Suspense. This thriller is lacking in genuine thrills. For example, the Sixes break into Pheobe's house leaving apples and later teaspoons. Sorry, but I just don't find fruit and flatware frightening.
5. The Bad Sex Scenes They weren't necessary to the plot. They also weren't romantic, sensual or erotic.
6. The Bland Storyline. The mystery failed to engage me and the solution was rather trite and predictable. Ultimately this book was like a made-for-cable movie: nothing special, but not bad enough to make you change the channel.

206 Bones ReviewBeing a Chicagoan, I very much enjoyed all the references to my city at the beginning of this novel.After several books that provided some background on Tempe (her sister, Harry; her family background)it was fun to read about her estranged husband's family, a lively bunch of Latvians!I found that this book, like the others, pulls me in, and what I anticipate will be "just a chapter or two" of reading invariably ends hours later, when I have finished the book, and the day is gone.The plots move quickly, and I just have to know what happens next, much to the detriment of my plans for the day. There have already been several reviews that discuss the plot; I see no point in belaboring that, except to say that there is always new knowledge to be gained, but the story line is fast paced and never preachy.I like that the author's passion for her profession comes through. It is still my fervent hope that Tempe ends up with Claudel and not Ryan, and I eagerly await the next book in hopes that Tempe's fascination with Ryan's blue eyes will be replaced by appreciation of Claudel's sartorial splendor!206 Bones Overview

The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party: The New No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency Novel (The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency) ReviewI have really enjoyed this series - now up to number 12 I think with this installment. It is unique in many ways and teaches many lessons about life.
When I first heard about the series, it was on book 6. It worked out well, because I had so many books to read without having to wait. Now, I am all caught up, so the year between books seems like a very long time. It is like having to wait before getting to see an old friend again - well, the old friend in this case has come back for a visit!
Besides the more obvious things like the great characters in the series - after a while they seem like you actually know them as you would real people - what I really liked about the series is the detail about Botswana and life there. And so much of it is positive, unlike so much of what you hear about Africa these days. The books also teach many lessons useful to people everywhere, but from a Botswana/African perspective that can really shine a light where it needs to shine sometimes.
The first book was especially good in portraying the Botswana background and viewpoint - I assume accuracy here as the author lived there a long time. The author seemed to move away from this as the series progressed; a disappointment for me, even though the books were still interesting. The good news is that I think the author is headed back in the right direction here with the last few books.
As an aside, the TV series is great too; last time I looked into the matter, it does not look like the series with continue into a second season, but there is talk of a movie which is better than nothing. Most of the characters in the TV series were about as I had pictured them from the book - the main exception being Mma Makutsi. The actress that played her did a great job though; she just looked a little different from how I had pictured her from the book.
Now on to the new book itself. I am happy to see that this new book stays closer to the series roots in many respects showing us some more about the real Botswana. The overall plot seems very vigorous too. I won't go into that too much as readers usually like a surprise, but here's a look at main story lines in the new book without giving things away.
Remember the tiny white van that Mma Precious Ramotswe has been so attached to in the series? It is gone, but she is seeing visions of it. Hmm, that sounds like an interesting phenomenon. Where will this go? You'll have to read the book to find out.
At a cattle post, two cows have been killed, and Mma Ramotswe is asked to investigate. Lots of suspects as it turns out, making it a challenge for our favorite Botswanan lady detective. Does she solve the mystery? No spoilers here, you'll have to read the book to find out.

One of Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni's apprentices may have gotten a girl pregnant; he runs away when pressure builds to marry her. Will those young men ever finish their apprenticeships and stay out of trouble?
The "villianess", Violet Sephotho, is back. Remember her? She did horribly at the secretarial college when Mma Makutsi was there and shows up now and then to make poor Grace miserable. Anyway, Violet is running for the Botswana Parliament. They'd have to be desperate to elect her. What is up with this? Well, you'll have to open up the book to find out.
And a perfect pair of wedding shoes - series fans will be pretty sure that the "shoephile" Mma Makutsi must be involved with those. Will Phuti Radiphuti finally marry Grace? The title of the book seems to refer to a wedding happening, but will it be Grace's or for the run away apprentice? Again, I won't tell here - you'll have to read the book.
Lots of interesting things are in store for readers here. I hope that series fans will come back and read this latest book, meet favorite characters again, be entertained, and learn something about Botswana and life in general as well.

Misterioso: A Crime Novel ReviewThe first couple of pages of this book had me wondering what I had gotten into. It just seemed a bit jerky and clunky. Luckily, I persevered with the book and somewhere around page 40ish the book became difficult to put down.
While the story is similar to countless other serial killer novels it is the writing that makes this book rise above the rest. Unlike so many detective novels dealing with serial killers, this book doesn't focus on endless, gruesome details of torture and gore. The killer's exploits aren't recounted in nauseating and tedious detail. The author instead focuses on character development and describing the background that shaped the world-view of the serial killer.
The story takes place in 1990s Sweden in an atmosphere of racial tension and national self-loathing over the greedy banking fiasco of the 1980s (a period of self-introspection our own nation seems to have skipped) Dahl's protagonist, Paul Hjelm, is simultaneously undergoing his own period of self-introspection as career and family issues collide to make him question himself-- to make him look into himself and confront "the abyss."
I won't bother to describe the entire story in this review, what I would like to say is that Dahl's Hjelm is a lot of fun to read. He reminds me a bit of Martin Cruz-Smith's Arkady Renko, but without that character's martyr complex and self-destructive streak. Hjelm is human without being boring and cool without being a cartoon character.
I think the best part of this book is the complex view it gave me of Sweden, a country I know practically nothing about. Until reading this book I only though of blond, beautiful, happy Swedes, helping each other and being good citizens (okay, a I knew about a bit of angst a la Bergman, of course).
I whole-heartedly recommend this book to readers who eschew the Patricia Cornwall and James Patterson formulas and enjoy something edgier, along the lines of Ken Bruen, Peter Hoeg, and Cruz-Smith.Misterioso: A Crime Novel Overview
