Physical Education (Murder 101 Mysteries) ReviewPhysical Education is the sixth in the series of detective-comedy-mystery-romances stories revolving around university prof Alison Bergeron. The series is authored by Maggie Barbieri.
And the first book I've read on my new Kindle Fire reader/tablet (Had the KF for a week and I love it).
I've read and reviewed all of Maggie's books in this series and they're lots of fun. This latest installment has a throwback to the first book: a dead body appears in the trunk of Alison's car.
And then it's off to the races with the usual twists and turns. The big twist in this one is how Alison is called upon to temporarily coach the ladies basketball team at the College (St. Thomas, on the scenic Hudson River - eerily similar to the author's alma mater, St. Vincent's in the Bronx).
The standard cast of characters, along with some new ones, and plenty of sub-plots. And of course Professor Bergeron is now married to Detective "Hot Pants" Crawford.
Alison is loaded with one-liners ("one day you're a basketball coach and the next you're selling candy") as she stumbles through to the satisfying conclusion.
All great fun!Physical Education (Murder 101 Mysteries) Overview

Clutches and Curses (Haley Randolph Mysteries) ReviewEnded excellent. I wasn't so sure about Haley at first, she seemed to be a spoiled woman, shopping and drinking frapps nonstop without a work ethic was driving me crazy. But somewhere along this cute little mystery, she grew on me and I am very sad it ended. I can't wait to pick up more Haley!
When Haley's mom wants her to fill in at the mother daughter week spa thing, she decided to go to Vegas on the spur to help the department store she works for get a new store together. Haley doesn't have much of a work ethic -- but that doesn't stop her from finding bodies! What is worse is the person that was murdered is a classmate from high school, one Haley was supposed to stay with. When that puts her on the detective's radar, Haley has a reason to find out as much as they do who really murdered Courtney.
This was a pretty believable story and Haley will grow on you with her milkshakes and her funny ways. She made me laugh out loud too many times, which makes it a extra thumbs up in my opinion! Can't wait to read backwards in the series now and I hope there are more Haley adventures in the future!Clutches and Curses (Haley Randolph Mysteries) Overview

Behind the Seams (A Crochet Mystery) Review"Behind the Seams" is a cozy mystery with a crochet theme. It's the sixth book in the series, but it can be read as a stand-alone and doesn't spoil the mysteries in the previous books.
The whodunit was on my list of possible suspects from the start, and I was certain of whodunit long before Molly was. However, the clues weren't obvious, so it was believable that Molly and friends didn't suspect. I found it less believable that Molly kept getting arrested because she was near a crime and due to misunderstandings. The being arrested part, maybe, but not the number of times within a matter of days.
The suspense was created by Nell potentially being arrested for murder and the relationship tensions between Molly and her boyfriend. It was clear that Molly wasn't committed to the relationship, though. While it was realistic that she took some time to realize this, it lacked the intended tension and so these sections felt slow to me. It might have been more suspenseful if I'd read the previous books.
There were also several scenes that headed toward a very exciting climax then jumped in time until the scene was over (which was confusing) and then had people discussing what had happened. This also cut down on some of the potential tension and excitement.
While the mystery part of the story was completely wrapped up, the author added a relationship cliff-hanger to the last paragraph of the book. But with the guy I didn't like.
Basically, I was left feeling like it should have been a really exciting, interesting book. It had all the right elements. But due to some of the writing choices, the excitement didn't engage me like it could have.
Kissing and such were only implied. There were no sex scenes. There was no bad language. Overall, it was an interesting cozy mystery with an interesting crochet method described in the story and in more detail in the back.

I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.Behind the Seams (A Crochet Mystery) Overview
