Fundamentals of Criminal Investigation ReviewThis text is a must for any criminal justice student or law enforcement officer. The book covers all aspects of the art of investigation. Only through real world experience will an investigator become an expert in this field, however this book lays a very solid foundation and contains many sound, tried and proven criminal investigative techniques. I have been a law enforcement agent for twenty years and this is one of the cornerstones in my personal library of law books.
The seventh edition contains approximately 900 pages, but is a very interesting read. I have probably read most of it, including some chapters multiple times. The information inside the chapters isclearly written, easy to understand and no nonsense. The Complete Guide to Professional Wedding Photography: Creating a more profitable and fulfilling business ReviewThe book is well written, with good images, so why not 5 stars?
I read the book cover to cover and that is the problem it's not an easy read. They didn't know what this book was when they did the layout. It's set up as a coffee table book with lots of good images and lots of information on how the images were taken. This causes bad breaks in the text, they break in the middle of paragraphs, and even worse sentences. One sentence cuts in the middle for multiple pages of images then picks back up with the end of the sentence.
As for the information provided in the book, it's good but not really new. One issue I have is that some of the chapters feel forced. This book covers the business of wedding photography so it has a chapter on bookkeeping that can be summed up as find good software and a good accountant. I get it, he doesn't do his own bookwork, fine, skip the chapter and write about what you do.
The images are great, the text is nothing new but it is motivational and gives a good blueprint to follow for the business of wedding photography. Overall this is a good book and would have been 5 stars if they had shown the attention to detail in the layout of the book that they put into the images.The Complete Guide to Professional Wedding Photography: Creating a more profitable and fulfilling business Overview

And Hell Followed With It: Life and Death in a Kansas Tornado ReviewThis book could be called a very entertaining historical novel except for the fact that it is based on real characters who play themselves and a real natural event more dramatic than fiction. Bonar does an exceptional job of weaving the lives of dozens of real people into the compelling story of their existence before and after a monster tornado that leveled much of a major US city.
Incredible detail is also provided concerning weather myths, forecasts and the city and state. Two major myths that were destroyed by the tornado were that Burnetts Mound would protect the city and that the southwest corner of a basement was the safest location during a tornado. It is hard to believe that the author was able to bring a 44 year old event to life and make it as fresh as if it happened yesterday. Pittsburgh: A New Portrait ReviewFranklin Toker has written a series of books about the architecture of Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania, and each is clearly a labor of love. About 3/4ths of this book is about the city proper, and about a hundred pages cover outlying communities - not nearly enough to even scratch the surface of the outlying municipalities and suburbs.
For each neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh, Toker describes a bit of its history and what makes it special, with an emphasis on specific historic structures of note. I found it was helpful to have the Google Streetview feature open on my computer while reading the book, so I could see the building in question. An 11-page appendix lists the significant buildings, with addresses, dates, and architects' names.
Quite apart from the textual element of the book, this book is visually beautiful. Nearly every two-page spread has a color photograph, and the numerous maps are of a higher caliber than one would expect in a book of this nature.

Where To Go When (Eyewitness Travel Guides) ReviewTwo years ago, the producers of the PBS series, Globe Trekker, released a tie-in book similar in approach to this one called Globe Trekker's World: What's On in the World...and When. Travel writer Joseph Rosendo takes the same approach of presenting a global calendar of must-see sights, events and unique festivals. Granted the paperback Globe Trekker calendar guidebook is half the price, but this has the advantage of the glossy, luxuriant look of the DK Eyewitness Guides adapted into a coffee-table book format full of their superb color photography. As the consulting editor, Rosendo has designed the book specifically to overload the reader's visual senses with exotic images that whet an appetite for further investigation.
Whereas "Globe Trekker" is targeted more to the backpack adventurer, this book encompasses a broader spectrum of experiences, for example, what to do for five days in March during the Fallas Festival in Valencia, Spain, or four days in July during the Calgary Stampede, or ten days sailing in Kerala, India, in December. Not only are there renowned festivals around the world to attend but also more personalized experiences recommended that range from luxuriant trips of romantic fantasy to affordable family getaways. The presentation is smart simply because Rosendo lets the seasons dictate the order of the highlights rather than the geography itself. Each month opens with a two-page spread of thirty key activities occurring at that time around the world of which a dozen are highlighted with greater detail.
Key bits of advice are presented with a couple of lines on such topics as getting there and getting around, what it costs to eat , what to do for a recommended period of time, and even a comment on the local do's and don'ts to avoid being labeled an ugly American. But make no mistake, it's the lush, often dazzling photography that is the draw here, not the relatively cursory information provided. What the DK Eyewitness Guides do especially well is make visual sense of what other guidebooks simply describe in words. This large-format book goes even further in bundling the diverse world of experiences to be had if one ventures forth to find them at the optimal time and with an unlimited budget.Where To Go When (Eyewitness Travel Guides) Overview

Someplace Like America: Tales from the New Great Depression ReviewDefinitely one of the most important books I've ever read and a sobering one at that. It is one I wish all Americans would read, because it reveals the faces of struggling fellow citizens, the likes of which we haven't seen in these numbers since the Great Depression. "Someplace Like America" is like a real-life, modern-day version of the torment Steinbeck laid out in "The Grapes of Wrath" all those years ago, albeit with numerous stories in various places across America.
As Maharidge himself states, this is a journalistic effort, not a wonky policy book, but he deftly weaves in how various political/policy decisions over the years have resulted in the suffering of Americans regardless of class, age race, sex or region of the country. We are all vulnerable, now more than ever.
My only complaint with the book is that due to the structure, it didn't feel like it really flowed and felt "all of a piece" for a while, and that's probably because it builds on previous books/articles and then moves into the present day, so there isn't necessarily a strong continuum in places. It starts in the 1980s, jumps to the 90s and 00s, revisits some of the individuals and families Maharidge and Williamson encountered previously, and then proceeds forward to document more current struggles throughout America.
Regardless of my quibbles, I found this to be a most enjoyable read, even though the subject matter is heavy and hard to take at times. It is a remarkable piece of work, and a true modern-day classic.Someplace Like America: Tales from the New Great Depression Overview

Secret Journeys of a Lifetime: 500 of the World's Best Hidden Travel Gems (National Geographic) ReviewThis is a big, heavy coffee table book with enticing colour pictures on every page. It is divided into 9 sections: high altitude points, wilderness, islands, the road less traveled, ancient sites off the beaten path, sites tucked away into quiet corners, undiscovered villages, city secrets. Each section is then divided into sites in North America, South America, Australia-Oceana, Asia, Europe, and Africa. In these sections are several top 10 lists for world sites such as; top 10 wildflower displays, top 10 islands in cities, top 10 religious art - each of these has a description and a sentence on planning and a web site.
The 500 best travel gems each have a page and at least 1 picture, a small location map, some text telling about the site and when to go, how to find it, planning, and websites.
I did find one problem with one of their sites, which hopefully isn't an indication of poor details in the others. It lists St Michaels Maryland as an undiscovered village...anyone who has tried to find a parking place, or a table at a restaurant on a summer Sunday afternoon there would find this hilarious. Strange because if they would have investigated a bit further there are several other small towns on the Eastern shore of Maryland that are perfectly charming and wonderful examples of what they purport St Michaels to be.
All of this information and the pictures combine to make you wish you had unlimited funds and time to start on a journey. If you are lucky, you have been to a few of these places - whether you have or not, you would certainly find this book interesting for its photography and facts about these faraway places.
