Death Unexpected : The Violent Deaths of Fayette ReviewDeath Unexpected is like sitting around the office with the cops that have been around for 15 or 20 years and listening to them talk about past deeds and events that shaped the community. I was amazed at how investigations could turn on a tiny incident (What if the radio operator had been less diligent in checking the teletype in the middle of the night?). The author asks the questions we all want the answer to. As an experience investigator, he is uniquely suited to interview people. As good as he is an interviewer he has to be equally good at listening. The author has this down to a "T". Fayette County Georgia is unique among the metropolitan Atlanta counties. It's nestled between I 85 and I 75, but has no major interstate connection. Only with the growth of Hartsfield-Jackson international airport that Fayette County came into it's own. Bruce Jordan had a ringside seat to the growth of Fayette County and did a remarkable job of reporting things that could be long forgotten. I hope he isn't done writing.Death Unexpected : The Violent Deaths of Fayette Overview

Understanding the Law ReviewThis is a great overview of the five main areas of law and a number of real-life legal relationships with which we all should be familiar. It also has good case studies and assignments. A teacher's manual is available. Most of my students keep the book rather than resell it; that is high praise for this above-average-price textbook.Understanding the Law Overview

Profilers: Leading Investigators Take You Inside The Criminal Mind ReviewCriminal psychology and profiling are my areas of biggest interest in the realm of true crime. As I have a library of over 50 books on this and related topics I certainly feel qualified to write reviews on these books.
This book is devided into two parts. The first is a collection eleven odd articles from various bulletins and law enforcement magazines. Put simply, as the book tiltles them, this is a collection of the well known Original Behavioural Science Articles on Criminal Profiling. They are written by the 'who's who' from the era often referred to as 'The Golden Age of Profilers'. For this reason alone the book is well worth 'the price of admission.'
Part two covers comtemporary articles on Criminal Profiling. The topices are wide and varied covering such topics as Forensic Linguistics, Geographic Profiling to Assaultive Eye Injury and Enucleation.
I wondered how interested I would be in Forensic Linguistics but found the chapter facinating.
I feel most readers with an interest in the topic will find part one just great. In part two, since it covers such a wide range of areas I guess it's possible the odd chapter may not appearl to all.
The other plus here is the fact the book is broken into distinct articles by the editors so you can 'peice read' or do a 'cover to cover'.
I see the book as appealing to law inforcemnet personel, people like myself who don't work in law inforcement but have to deal with perpitrators and their victims and finally all those who enjoy the topic.
If I were forced to give up my entire library and keep just one book this would nearly have to be the one.
A great book, well done to Campbell and DeNevi, the editors.Profilers: Leading Investigators Take You Inside The Criminal Mind Overview

Insured for Murder ReviewI was 18 years old living in the French Market in Columbus Ohio going to Bradford Business School. John Hawkins lived in my apartment building one floor down. He was incredibly goodlooking. I lived with 3 other girls at the time and we made friends with him and his friends. As a matter of fact, one of my classmates worked at his Just Sweats store at the French Market. He would routinely come into the store and take the cash out of the register then leave. This would make the manager so mad because they wouldn't be able to reconcile the books. I remember that he drove a black porsche. I was in his apartment a few times to borrow a wine opener. I remember him having a very expensive stereo system and big screen t.v. Back in 87', it was a big deal to have such a system. I came very close to sleeping with this man. To his credit, he thought I was too young. I look back now and think what a naive little girl I was. It wasn't long after I graduated from Bradford, that he was wanted for murder. I remember watching the news and seeing his face and the accompaying news story. My jaw dropped to the floor. This man was addicted to the fast life. He used his looks and charm to get what he wanted. I haven't read this book but I plan on buying it.Insured for Murder Overview

Shooting Incident Reconstruction, Second Edition ReviewI recently purchased the Shooting Incident Reconstruction book by Lucien Haag and would highly recommend it for every forensic scientist who may examine this type of evidence. University's offering forensic science courses, as well as all forensic laboratory's, should have a copy available to their students / practitioners. The book contains an absolute wealth of material concerning the subject matter. Jim Hamby, Ph.D.Shooting Incident Reconstruction, Second Edition Overview

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, Second Edition ReviewThe CPTED Strategies introduced and well laid out in this book, establish a foundation for creative target hardening and risk transference.
To suggest as one critic does, that this is "low level" stuff is to miss the point entirely.
As a security consultant, I have applied these concepts to a variety of corporate settings with positive results.
If someone is simply looking for standard "templates" without the capacity to creatively apply the ideals this is not the book.
If you are serious about your work, it is essential.Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, Second Edition Overview

21st Century Security and CPTED: Designing for Critical Infrastructure Protection and Crime Prevention ReviewRandy Atlas, PhD., CPP, AIA, is likely the most qualified writers and trainers on CPTED, approaching the likes of the past legends of CPTED the likes of Oscar Newman, the late Tim Crowe, etc. While there are many scholars and practitioners that could rise to take the mantle of leadership defining the face of proselytizing for Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to the masses, I think Dr. Atlas's book clearly puts him forward as the front runner. Since 1991, Tim Crowe's book, "Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design: applications of architectural design and space management concepts" has been the core curriculum for CPTED practioneers, architects, schools, etc; Crowe's book was given an update in 2000. But there have been many improvements, criticisms, and updates to CPTED that have not found their place within one cover until Dr. Atlas released his important contribution to the industry. CPTED is the design or redesign of an environment to reduce crime opportunity and fear of crime. CPTED is achieved through access control, surveillance, and territorial reinforcing strategies that incorporate procedural, mechanical, and natural methods. As CPTED has evolved, several defined schools of CPTED thought have formed that are frequently characterized by the professionals that espouse the school variants; there is a Florida school, an Australian school, and Canadian school of CPTED, and many variations more. Indeed, some scholars, such as Greg Saville, Ph.D. (also a contributor to Dr. Atlas's book), have focused on 2nd Generation CPTED brining even more color analysis to the implementation and thinking that must go into successful application of CPTED strategies and methods. This particular book on CPTED is an important core contribution to the professional security manager's tool kit for reducing crime in specific places. It augments and builds upon the successful work of prior scholars in the field. But Dr. Atlas has done much more than just focus on what CPTED was, or has become. Rather, Dr. Atlas asks the difficult questions, what should we be doing? How shall we adapt to new and changing crime situations? And what about entertaining new ideas about old concepts? Indeed, Dr. Atlas is not afraid of confronting challenges with CPTED theory, but rather meets these challenges head on by inviting guest contributors to his book that bring a collective balance to the presentation of data, theory, and practical applications. In closing, and in fairness the reader, I disclose that I had a very small part to play in the book's production; I am a co-author of one of the 32 chapters of this book, "Chapter 6: Understanding CPTED and Situational Crime Prevention," written by Severin Sorensen, John Hayes, and Randy Atlas. My small participation in this project should in no way discount my review of Dr. Atlas's important work; rather quite the opposite, my own experience with CPTED makes me the perfect reviewer for this important work. It is for this reason that 21st Century Security and CPTED is a must read for security professionals. It will no doubt become part of the core curriculum of CPTED practitioners, architects, police officers, property managers, and security personnel interested in learning how to make the built environment more defensible and safer. The book is a solid contribution to the field, should be in every library of criminology, security management, police studies, and architecture. It is a good read.21st Century Security and CPTED: Designing for Critical Infrastructure Protection and Crime Prevention Overview

This Is for the Mara Salvatrucha: Inside the MS-13, America's Most Violent Gang ReviewI picked this up because MS-13 is very active in my area (DC/Maryland/Virginia) and I was curious to learn more about how they operated on a national and international level, what their history is, what their main rackets are, what the structure is, what the command and control is, and so forth. However, this is not a book that's going to give you very much of that. Rather, it is a detailed account of the sad story of Brenda Paz -- a teenage MS-13 member whose 2003 murder was a very high-profile news item in the region.
Investigative reporter Logan uses Brenda's story as a way of writing about MS-13, and the book follows her for about two years, starting roughly from the time she moved to Texas to live with her uncle's family until her murder. Her relatives apparently didn't give her a whole lot of nurturing or attention, and as a result, the otherwise extremely bright and bubbly Brenda drifted into gang life. She quickly made friends with a local MS-13 clique, became the girlfriend of their leader, and was jumped in as a member. She spent a little less than a year with the gang, mainly in Texas and Virginia, before she decided to cooperate with police rather than serve jail time. Her apparent photographic memory made her a treasure trove for the cops, and she gave countless interviews to law enforcement officials from all over the country, culminating in a lengthy video-taped session that was adapted into a training video for police on MS-13. Naturally, a number of MS-13 people began to suspect her of being an informant, and as a result of a series of farcical bureaucratic errors and her own hubris, she was killed.
While this picture from inside the gang is often very vivid and interesting, it's not particularly in-depth. Most of what you learn about MS-13 are the basics that have been covered in any number of magazine, television, and newspaper profiles over the last few years. I guess if you had never heard of MS-13, it provides a very solid overview, but it felt pretty skimpy to me. To be fair, writing about closed gangs is not exactly easy, and it's next to impossible to get a truly in-depth anthropological picture of one. Logan does good work with the material he has, spinning Brenda's story into a compelling tragedy and cautionary tale. Ultimately, however, she comes across as yet another teenager without strong family involvement in her life and exceedingly poor decision-making skills.
Logan uses one stylistic device that I didn't care for, and that's inventing what people are thinking when there is absolutely no way he could know. I understand that this is an established practice in some forms of narrative non-fiction, but it really bothered me when in the midst of his retelling of a murder, we are told what thoughts are running through the victim's mind as he's about to die. It's really unnecessary, and is the kind of sensationalistic device that undermines the credibility of the book.
Speaking of sensationalism, by the end of the book, it's still not clear to me why MS-13 is regarded as dramatically more violent than any other gang with cliques throughout the country (such as the Bloods and Crips). No data is provided in the book to make such a case, and the anecdotal examples, while horrific, don't strike me as dramatically different from those perpetrated by other gangs. On the flip side, I do think MS-13 represents a very different and more serious problem than classic American gangs, if only for their international networks. Details about this international dimension are severely lacking in this book -- such as the exact nature of their partnership with Mexican drug traffickers, a proper investigation of the rumor that they have connections with Al Qaeda, and their influence in Central America (in fact, their most infamous crime -- a mass killing in Honduras -- isn't mentioned in the book). Still, this is a nice narrative introduction to MS-13 in America that fills the need for those with an interest in street gangs. This Is for the Mara Salvatrucha: Inside the MS-13, America's Most Violent Gang Overview
