Darkly Dreaming Dexter: A Novel ReviewI usually don't read crime novels, but I'm a big fan of the Showtime series "Dexter," and I wanted to read the novel the show is based on. "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" is the first installment of Jeff Lindsay's series about Dexter Morgan, a serial killer with a conscience. Dexter routinely kills and dismembers people in and around Miami, but unlike other serial killers, Dexter has a strict moral code that he struggles to adhere to: Basically, he only kills bad guys. Dexter struggles to keep his dark side under wraps by working as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department, hanging out with his foster sister, and even having a girlfriend. However, he always succumbs to his "Dark Passenger" and cannot suppress the urge to kill. When a new serial killer begins preying on Miami hookers, Dexter becomes intrigued by his new colleague and is intent on connecting with the murderer, even if it means exposing his own dark secrets.
This book was pretty good. Unlike most crime novels, which I usually think are very poorly written, "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" is composed of a blend of dark humor, intense drama, mystery and suspense, and good old-fashioned blood and gore. I was pleasantly surprised by how much content from the book was used in Season 1 of the television series "Dexter." There are some big differences between the book and the TV show, though. The "Tamiami Butcher" is referred to as the "Ice Truck Killer" in the TV show. The characters of Angel Batista, Vince Masuka, and James Doakes are relatively minor characters in the novel and are featured much more prominently in the television series. Migdia LaGuerta (who is called Maria LaGuerta in the show) is a supporting character in the novel, but is even nastier in the book that she is in the series, if you can believe that.
There are several other plot differences between the book and the novel, and overall, I think the television series is actually much better than the book. All of the characters are much more interesting in the show, and there are more intriguing subplots in the series as well. Also, I thought the ending of the book was extremely rushed, especially the part detailing the relationship Dexter has with the Tamiami Butcher. Hopefully that aspect of things is explored more in Lindsay's other novels, but I don't know if it is or not.
If you're a fan of the show "Dexter" or simply enjoy the crime novel genre, you'll probably find "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" to be an interesting read. However, don't feel like you absolutely need to read the novel if you're a fan of the Showtime series. This is one of those rare instances where the show is actually a lot better than the book.Darkly Dreaming Dexter: A Novel Overview

Profilers: Leading Investigators Take You Inside The Criminal Mind ReviewCriminal psychology and profiling are my areas of biggest interest in the realm of true crime. As I have a library of over 50 books on this and related topics I certainly feel qualified to write reviews on these books.
This book is devided into two parts. The first is a collection eleven odd articles from various bulletins and law enforcement magazines. Put simply, as the book tiltles them, this is a collection of the well known Original Behavioural Science Articles on Criminal Profiling. They are written by the 'who's who' from the era often referred to as 'The Golden Age of Profilers'. For this reason alone the book is well worth 'the price of admission.'
Part two covers comtemporary articles on Criminal Profiling. The topices are wide and varied covering such topics as Forensic Linguistics, Geographic Profiling to Assaultive Eye Injury and Enucleation.
I wondered how interested I would be in Forensic Linguistics but found the chapter facinating.
I feel most readers with an interest in the topic will find part one just great. In part two, since it covers such a wide range of areas I guess it's possible the odd chapter may not appearl to all.
The other plus here is the fact the book is broken into distinct articles by the editors so you can 'peice read' or do a 'cover to cover'.
I see the book as appealing to law inforcemnet personel, people like myself who don't work in law inforcement but have to deal with perpitrators and their victims and finally all those who enjoy the topic.
If I were forced to give up my entire library and keep just one book this would nearly have to be the one.

My Life, Deleted: A Memoir ReviewI decided to write this review after reading the only one so far--which the reader submitted and didn't even read the book! I am amazed that Amazon would even accept it, so much reference to "Dr. Phil" I think it was written by a staff member. Like this "reviewer," I saw this man's appearance on Dr. Phil and didn't hear the whole story so got the book to fill me in. Unlike the 1st reviewer, I did indeed read the book.

Scott Bolzan, an entrepreneur and former NFL football player, slipped and fell one day in the bathroom in his office building and his life would never be the same. He lost his memory of everything that happened in his lifetime and apparently, will never get it back.
It was an enjoyable read, I finished it in a little less than two days, but some ends are left "loose." A story like this can't have a happy ending, but I think the book should have been published after he and his ever-loving wife Joan renewed their wedding vows. They didn't do it as planned since Scott had his accident and Joan wanted to make sure he really wanted to remarry her, and they postponed it as he was just getting to know her again. Happily, they do fall in love again so it would have been wonderful to repeat their vows since Scott can't remember any of it the first time around. I can only hope they do it sometime in the near future. Also, I got the Kindle edition because I wanted to read it right away and was disappointed there were no pictures. I caught a glimpse of him on "Dr. Phil," but Scott's family was described with such colorful detail it would have been nice to see them so I could picture them in my mind when reading about them. I feel like they were "deleted" as well!
I felt a sort of kinship with Scott as I recently quit my job working as a flight attendant for medical reasons of my own, and I know what it feels like to suddenly have no income. I also was based in Phoenix, where the family lives, so I recognized some of the landmarks mentioned.
He is very courageous. Reading about his predicament caused me to mention to my husband that I hoped he would fall in love with me again if this ever happened to us. This truly is the magic of the book, his wife and family standing by him even though their beloved husband and father is truly a "different person."
