Pieces of Eight ReviewHave you ever just laughed so hard you hurt? This is the most heartwarming, memory invoking, hilarious book I've ever read. Seriously, I'm just over half-way through and I'm falling in love with the Maggio family, "each and every one of you". I was out on the patio last night laughing out loud while reading passages to my husband when my neighbor yelled over the fence, "You must be reading 'Pieces of Eight' again! Are you almost done? I can't wait to read it!" She's going to have to wait because I am savoring every chapter and e-mail share. These siblings have a deep and playful understanding of one another and can teach us all a thing or two about caring, having fun and laughing at ourselves.
I guarantee it will make you laugh and it will make you cry. You may even learn a new language ..."Maggio-speak". Even if you don't learn it you will remember a few one-liners. Did I say I loved this book? I did. Thanks, Maggios for taking us on your trip down memory lane. Boy, do you have good memories!

Hold the Roses ReviewI read a lot of autobiographies, and "Hold the Roses" is one of the most candid and well written I've read. Rose Marie has not only lived a very interesting life; she's written a very entertaining book. I knew her as part of the sentence "I'll take Rose Marie to block" from her regular appearances on Hollywood Squares. I knew she had been on "The Dick van Dyke Show" and knew very little else about her. I didn't know about Baby Rose Marie, the little girl born out of wedlock who became a star on radio and in vaudeville; whose father didn't marry her mother but supported his "real family" by managing her career until he tried to have her killed. She did more than rub elbows with the famous and infamous of her day. And as interesting as her show business recollections are, the book recounts a love story that is both funny and touching. Rose Marie has had an incredible career. And she's topped it off by writing a wonderful book. I'm so glad I read it.Hold the Roses Overview

Wolf Storm ReviewThis book is so exciting! I felt as if I was in the story or watching it all unfold before me eyes. For a middle grade novel it is very well written. It grasps you and has you wanting to hurry and find out if they make it out alive, become wolf chow or human-sicles (popsicles).
Wolf Storm had me on the edge of my seat and holding my breath until I got to the end of the chapter. Where there I'm taken back to the top of the roller coaster. What a ride! =)
Stefan, well in the beginning of his teenage years, has just started his acting career. He never intended to audition for the role, but when he was asked to try out he unintentionally got the part. And by the twist of fate he ironically takes a similar role in his real life 'disaster'.
At first, Stefan didn't believe that he belonged and that he couldn't keep up with expectations that are needed for his acting role, especially since he had Raine constantly giving him the stink eye, and Sherman giving him attitude on his inadequate acting. But everything changes and he realizes there is more to him; It 'only' took them being stranded, avalanched, and hurt to near freezing to realize it.
(did you catch my hint of sarcasm -_^)
Everything was fine and moving along until everyone decided to go into town for a break. From there everything takes a turn for the worse.
A gripping tale of being stuck in the snowy mountains and the struggle to keep alive till help comes.
Imagine taking care of a 13 year old girl whose always in the Lime Light, a 9 year old that's still too young to know things & has asthma problems no less! And an old man that's on the brink of a heart attack. Oh boy!!
With no food, limited resources, no cellphones (OMG!!), ice and snow everywhere, and hungry wolves waiting for you to make a mistake.
Where's Bear Grylls when you need him!!?? =)
Wolf Storm is a great story giving off the message that you can overcome anything with perseverance, that obstacles overcome makes you stronger, that wild one-eyed wolves are bad news, to always have a lighter on your person, and it's a good a idea to maybe want to have your cellphone with you at ALL TIMES!! ^_^ Thank you Ms Garretson & HarperCollins for a thrilling ride!! Stuart Little ReviewThe most common complaint about Sutart Little is the ending, or lack of ending. I disagree. The story is one of growing up, and sadness, and yearning for something just out of reach. The brilliant E.B. White denies us a happy-Disney ending, avoids "closure". The story is just like life; it is a journey, not a package. The loose ends don't need to be cleared up with a sequel. Stuart has grown up and struck off on his own, the end. When I first read this story as a young boy, it gave me my first taste of melancholy. This should be the first "profound" book that a child reads, for it leaves you feeling sad, but hopeful.Stuart Little Overview

Would you ever want to be trapped in a cave for a long time in the dark? Here are two important things that happened in this story. First, they found a rock in the way so they could not get inside the tunnel. Also, they found an underground stream below the cave and there the Boxcar Children found a missing boat and Benny's headlamp! I like this story because there was a lot of an action. Also, the mystery was hard and I like hard mysteries! The pictures helped me understand the story a little bit better. The message the author shared was Caves are not just for fun there also are treasures! Why doesn't anybody want them down there? The American Heritage Children's Dictionary ReviewI bought this dictionary for my daughter when she started first grade - knowing that it would be a while until her reading skills were good enough for her to use it. Beginning in about the 2nd grade, she started to use it regularly - and in 3rd grade (last year) she used it all the time. Terrific first dictionary for a kid, with great pictures in full color, good art and illustrations, nice bold type, etc. What's nice about it is that it's layout is just like a grown-up dictionary - which they will switch to in time. This is a perfect dictionary for a grade schooler to learn to do 'research' with appropriate elementary school/junior high vocabularly. The Red Trailer Mystery (Trixie Belden #2) ReviewThe good news is that Jim Frayne has indeed inherited money from his great uncle and will have a new guardian appointed. The bad news is that he left Sleepyside before he could find out. So Trixie, Honey, and her governess, Miss Trask, set out in the Wheeler's trailer to find him. The first night out, they stop next to a mysterious red trailer. The family stays inside with the curtains closed. When they arrive in upstate New York, they learn that trailer thieves are operating in the area. Will Trixie and Honey be able to find Jim before he leaves New York for good? What is going on in that mysterious trailer? And have the girls stumbled on the thieves' hide out?
This book picks up minutes after the first book in the series ended. This is unusual in kid's books, and I rather enjoyed it. There's enough of a recap that anyone new to the story will feel right at home, although it's obviously best to read book 1 first.
The first time I read the story, I knew the ultimate outcome of their search for Jim. However, the sub-plots kept me interested the whole way through. Trixie and Honey are more themselves then in the last book. And, like the last book, so much happens that it's hard to put the book down. This book also contains one of my all time favorite scenes from the series. I always laugh when Trixie and Honey are trapped in the loft by Al. Honey especially is funny while being perfectly in character.
Julie Campbell took her time setting up the characters and events of the series, so these first books are really needed to fully enjoy what follows. But that's no trouble since they are so much fun to read. I've been reading them for years, and I don't plan to stop in the near future.The Red Trailer Mystery (Trixie Belden #2) Overview

The Mark on the Door (Hardy Boys #13) ReviewThis review concerns the original 1934 edition. The search for a missing witness leads Frank, Joe and Mr. Hardy to Mexico. I'd more accurately give the book 3.5 stars. The book; although not quite as well written as earlier volumes, was loaded with action and adventure. Chapters 15-23 were very good; however the final two chapters were a major letdown, as the mystery was resolved much too soon. One thing that I did not like about the book was that after the first few of chapters, none of the Hardy's friends were included in the mystery. The Car ReviewThe Car by Gary Paulsen is a great novel about growing, rebellion, and America. The book begins in Cleveland, Ohio with a 14 year old boy named Terry. His parents, who spend all of there time arguing, decide to leave one another, coincidently at the same time - leaving Terry at home by himself. In his garage there is a little kit car of his fathers that he was forbidden to work on. Now that he has no supervision he decides to put the car together. Terry decides to go west with his new friend, he calls the "cat" since the car is a Blakely Bearcat, to see his only relative, his uncle. On the way he picks up a hitchhiker named Waylon, not by choice, a Vietnam veteran. Waylon is a "child of the sixties and seventies" and tries to teach Terry about "learning". They head to Wayne's house, who is also a Vietnam Vet and together they all three go "trucking". While "trucking" they learn all sorts of things about America, themselves, and each other. Gary Paulsen who also wrote The Hatchet, along with many other celebrated novels is an excellent author. He explains just enough to give the idea of what is going on, and leave the rest to the reader. Unlike some Authors who detail everything so much you don't even want to finish reading. For this reason I think that Gary Paulsen is one of the best authors ever. His books feel so realistic, probably because he writes from his own experience and has an excellent way to describe it. A possible alternate title that might have been better would have been The Cat, but that might not have caught to many peoples interest.The Car Overview

Racor PBS-2R Two-Bike Floor Bike Stand ReviewI've had this stand for over a year now. Took about five minutes to get it together. Held my 26" mountain bike just fine. I recently bought a new 26" MTB with disc brakes. The good news is that the disc rotors 'just barely' clear the support arms on this stand. You do have to futz with the bike's position on the stand a bit or the bike will 'lean' slightly on the rotor, but it isn't that hard to make it work. The bad news is that the support arm pairs are too close together to allow two mountain bikes of the same frame size to coexist peacefully in the same orientation. With front wheels inserted into the frame the handlebars clash big time. It works better if one bike has the front wheel in the frame and the other the rear wheel. The handlebar of one bike will still contact the seat of the other bike, but a simple turn of the handlebar on the outward-facing bike fixes this. This stand was obviously designed for two road bikes side-by-side, not MTBs. It would probably also be OK with two bikes of different frame sizes. Other than that, though, it's plenty sturdy and works well.Racor PBS-2R Two-Bike Floor Bike Stand OverviewWith the rise in popularity of expensive bicycles, storage and safety have become an issue. Bikes stored one on top of the other in a garage or hanging from a ceiling can be dangerous for small children or can fall and damage not only the bike, but an expensive automobile or truck. The PBS-2R Racor Bike Stand will securely store two bikes in either direction and can be used indoors or can be secured outside the home to safely store your bikes.
