The Closers ReviewIn Connelly's previous novel, The Narrows, Harry Bosch was seriously considering coming out of "retirement" and returning to service with the LAPD, despite several misgivings, one of which was the entrenched corruption throughout the force. However a new police chief is on board with a mission to clean house. Harry's old enemy, Deputy Chief Irving, a self-serving political player, wants Harry to fail and will do anything to achieve this end. Bosch has been assigned to the Open-Unsolved Unit, (cold cases) teamed up with his old partner, Kiz Rider, a no nonsense police woman in a predominately male domain, embark on an unsolved seventeen year old murder of a young girl, shot through the chest and taken out of her bedroom and dumped in a field. Harry attacks this unsolved murder with calculated zeal, leading to possible corruption in the force, pushing the case to it limits to find the perpetrator. The Closers begins at breakneck speed and doesn't let up until the last page is turned.
Reading The Closers was like meeting an old friend after a year of absence. Harry Bosch is one of the great characters in crime fiction, a man with an incredible sense of justice and an over bearing conscience, that pulls him into trouble from time to time. His relationship with Kiz Rider, as his partner, is a perfect match, as they know each other well, can read each other's thoughts before a word is spoken. Kiz never rides on Harry's coattails, but contributes to the motion, adding her own special skills to the investigation. Harry is older but he's a little smarter, and careful to stay within the bounds of the law. Kiz keeps Harry in line and is there to prevent him from slipping into his old, unorthodox habits.
As a piece of crime fiction, The Closers is by no means a character study, it is entirely plot driven, following Harry Bosch at work to every twist and turn of the case. Connelly knows how to write a crime novel and does not leave anything to the imagination. I have come to believe that the crime genre is an art form all its own, and Connelly has become one of its masters.
This is the real thing. Modern detective fiction doesn't get any better, and in the hands of Connelly, one can be sure the ride will be thoroughly entertaining; and The Closers delivers on all counts - a five star effort.

Without Remorse ReviewTom Clancy has created several fictional heroes that are at the heart of his many novels. One, of course, is John Patrick Ryan, who has served his country as a Marine, CIA officer, National Security Adviser, and President of the United States. Remote Control (Lab (Scholastic Hardcover)) ReviewI love this book. The first one rocked, but it was basically one action scene to the next. The story developed a bit later. Here, the action pulls the story forward. It's basically a story where an innocent hero is being chased, where you would think it's cliche'. It's not. The story is well paced and complex. Wolf Storm ReviewThis book is so exciting! I felt as if I was in the story or watching it all unfold before me eyes. For a middle grade novel it is very well written. It grasps you and has you wanting to hurry and find out if they make it out alive, become wolf chow or human-sicles (popsicles).
Wolf Storm had me on the edge of my seat and holding my breath until I got to the end of the chapter. Where there I'm taken back to the top of the roller coaster. What a ride! =)
Stefan, well in the beginning of his teenage years, has just started his acting career. He never intended to audition for the role, but when he was asked to try out he unintentionally got the part. And by the twist of fate he ironically takes a similar role in his real life 'disaster'.
At first, Stefan didn't believe that he belonged and that he couldn't keep up with expectations that are needed for his acting role, especially since he had Raine constantly giving him the stink eye, and Sherman giving him attitude on his inadequate acting. But everything changes and he realizes there is more to him; It 'only' took them being stranded, avalanched, and hurt to near freezing to realize it.
(did you catch my hint of sarcasm -_^)
Everything was fine and moving along until everyone decided to go into town for a break. From there everything takes a turn for the worse.
A gripping tale of being stuck in the snowy mountains and the struggle to keep alive till help comes.
Imagine taking care of a 13 year old girl whose always in the Lime Light, a 9 year old that's still too young to know things & has asthma problems no less! And an old man that's on the brink of a heart attack. Oh boy!!
With no food, limited resources, no cellphones (OMG!!), ice and snow everywhere, and hungry wolves waiting for you to make a mistake.
Where's Bear Grylls when you need him!!?? =)
Wolf Storm is a great story giving off the message that you can overcome anything with perseverance, that obstacles overcome makes you stronger, that wild one-eyed wolves are bad news, to always have a lighter on your person, and it's a good a idea to maybe want to have your cellphone with you at ALL TIMES!! ^_^ Thank you Ms Garretson & HarperCollins for a thrilling ride!! Rainbow's End ReviewThere are just too many things wrong with this novel for it to get any positive recommendation. The dialogue is wooden, sometimes laughable. Coincidences and cliches abound in amateurish fashion. Spelling, grammar and syntax cry out for a competent editor.
Characterizations are stiff, one dimensional, nonsensical. Among the Confederate pirates, for example, is a French Canadian who calls people, "Mon ami," and even says "Sacre bleu." Why he is there makes no sense at all. He seems to have walked in out of a Bullwinkle cartoon.
But worst of all is the shallow understanding of history, of fact, of reality. Granted, a fiction writer can take certain liberties with raw history, but the author of this novel goes off the edge. These errors go from major points to tiny details. The Lake Erie piracy of 1864, as described in this book, does not remotely resemble, for example, what actually occurred. The "battle," such as it was, took place on Middle Bass Island, not South Bass. John Brown, Jr. had no escaped slaves working for him, and it was he who went to warn officials at Johnson's Island prison, not a former slave. Co. K, 130th OVI boys captured were in mufti and had not been sent to Put-in-Bay. They were on the "Island Queen," bound for Toledo to be mustered out after 100 days service. The "Island Queen," so important to the story, was omitted completely. Rowing a boat from Put-in-Bay to Johnson's Island would have taken many hours, not minutes as the novel implies. It took John Brown, Jr. at least 12 hours to make the journey.
Among the tiny details: the CSA never issued coins; the Perry Monument at Put-in-Bay is NOT the second tallest monument in the U.S.--at least 3 others are taller; the number of guns on USS MICHIGAN is wrong. The names of the "pirates" are incorrect. Nitpicking? Ah, but the devil is in the details, as the lawyers say.
Pehaps if one were not aware of the history and had never been to Put-in-Bay, some of this wouldn't matter. But the glaring errors of the craft of writing would still remain. Misspelling is still misspelling. Alas, carelessness is the fatal flaw in any endeavor, writing included.Rainbow's End Overview

Unlike any other military book that I'm familiar with, Griffin writes about life in the military rather than focusing on combat as most military writers do. In this book, he will take you from the start of World War II through its end and into the years of developing tension with the Soviet Union and finally into Korea.
You will see what life in the Army is like through the eyes of two very different individuals; Craig Lowell , an obscenely rich, rebellious young man with astounding talents for both heroism and indiscretion and Sanford Felter, a small, slight, diminutive Jew with a brilliant mind and an uncompromising attitude. You will learn how both become Lieutenants in the U.S. Army through the most unlikely of circumstances and how both progress through the Army. You will meet their many friends, their superiors and their loves as Griffin makes each character come so alive, you imagine yourself standing beside them.
If your desire is tactical combat with bullets flying and bombs exploding, there will be very little of such situations in these books, which is a shame, considering how vivid and realistic Griffin presents them. However, for anyone who's ever wondered what the military life is like, I can give no higher recommendation.
Open these only when you are fully rested, because you will not get much sleep until you complete the entire series.Brotherhood of War: The Lieutenants, the Captains, the Major Overview

Run: 26.2 Stories of Blisters and Bliss Review"Ultramarathonman" hooked me on Dean. While clearly he is not the world's elite ultrarunner, the book motivated people, inspired them to get fit, to challenge their belief in their own capabilities. He wrote in a style that was refreshing, bold, and passionate. "50/50" was a far cry from his first effort, and when I first heard about "Run!" I was hoping for a rebound from what I would refer to as his sophomore slump. I need to premise this by again acknowledging the positives that Dean brought into my life as an individual, but I must give an honest review.
Dean, what happened? Early on in "Run!" the thought began creeping in my mind that you've started taking yourself far too seriously, and that all of the steps you take in your runs are after nothing but the mighty dollar. This book, at best, is a series of short stories better suited for a free blog as opposed to qualifying it as a full book. Some of the stories are entertaining, but many, and I mean many of them are self-righteous and plain boring. The further I read, the more my letdown turned to anger--Dean, you've lost your way, man! While I'm certain you'll have a fourth effort looming before too long, I encourage you to return to your roots--become an inspirational story teller and avoid trying to make yourself a writer. "Ultramarathonman" worked, "50/50" was just that, and "Run!" simply misses the mark.

Angelfire ReviewAngelfire was a unique story that was gripping and suspenseful, yet sweet and romantic as well. It was well rounded and kept my attention throughout. I really liked the storyline of a young girl being brought into her powers to fight these creatures, finding out she is someone who is helping in the ultimate battle of good verses evil.
Ellie was an interesting character. She was very vulnerable and flawed, yet she could turn into this amazing fighting machine with a single minded purpose that kicks major butt. There were times that she was slightly annoying, but those moments were definitely outweighed by the moments she was amazing me. Will was swoon-worthy and definitely made my heart skip a few beats. He was so loyal and strong and hot! YUM! I need a Will that is all my own!
The only thing I didn't love about the book was that I would have liked a little closure before the end of the book. I love series, and don't mind cliffhangers, but I still like at least part of a story, or some threads of the story, to be brought to a close each book. This one didn't really have an ending to any of the threads, it's just all kind of left in the open for future books in the series. That being said, I simply can't wait to find out where this series will go with book 2 and how the characters, relationships, and battle will develop.Angelfire Overview

Targets of Opportunity ReviewStephens has a great character flowing from his pen who is bound to arrive on the big screen in no time. Jordan Sandor is one of those rare leading men that combine straight shooting (literally and figuratively), sex appeal, and a sharp sense of humor. In addition to Jordan's throwback, universal appeal, Targets of Opportunity is filled with other colorful characters that create a dynamic battle between good...pretty bad...and pure evil. Stephens does a tremendous job developing each character by giving them an identity and having them fulfill a role in what becomes an incredibly fun, unexpected thriller that covers multiple continents and packs in wonderful local color.
Novels fail in this genre (at least for me) based on being unrealistic, too simplistic, and/or lack of interesting characters. Targets manages to combine a wonderful cast of characters with a fast paced, all-too-realistic plot that forces you to stay up late, and wake up too early to discover what happens next. I fully recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a well written, fun novel, which makes you think about the potential events that may unfold in the upcoming years ahead. Well done on all accounts. Hope there is more to come.Targets of Opportunity Overview
