Chasing Darkness: An Elvis Cole Novel (Elvis Cole Novels) ReviewSo I'm beginning to feel like all of the big names in pop thriller/crime fiction - Lee Childs, James Lee Burke, James Patterson, and now Robert Crais, are getting either bored or lazy, or have somehow managed to misplace the passion and fiery writing that placed them in their well deserved positions (well, except perhaps Patterson) on the big best seller lists. Yes, I'm a Robert Crais fan. The early Elvis Cole was smart, funny, and in your face - definitely an updated, more hip, and slightly more irreverent version of the venerable Raymond Chandler's Phillip Marlowe and today's answer to the hard boiled LA that Chandler invented. And Joe Pike? In Crais' prime, can you think of a supporting cast member more menacing - a more cleverly and intelligently rendered butt-kicker - the hands down candidate for the guy you'd least want to have on the other side of a street fight - or any kind of fight? Leaves me yearning for "LA Requiem", "The Monkey's Raincoat", or Crais' outstanding stand alone effort, "The Hostage".
To be fair, "Chasing Darkness" is by no means a bad read. In fact, it starts out with an intriguing "murder in a locked room-like" premise that is genuinely gripping, and definitely held my attention. And without the distraction and baggage of Cole's annoying girlfriend Lucy hanging around to mush up the action, I was getting ready to declare that "Crais is back" after what a thought were a couple of sub-par installments. But before long it starts feeling a bit tired with crooked cop conspiracy theories and all too familiar themes. And the intimidating Pike is relegated to a near cameo role, emerging with only enough adrenaline to help Elvis beat up some kids. At the end of the day, the enigma unravels too easily, and if you devote more than a few seconds to dissecting the mystery, you'll find a hole big enough for Cole's 'vette and Pike's Jeep to drive through - side-by-side.
When all is said and done, "Chasing Darkness" is mostly an entertaining ride, but essentially flat - a journeyman's effort that had that "got-to-do-this-to-meet-my contract" feel to it. The Crais aficionado - like me - will want to read it, but it is far from his best effort, and a sure sign that the talented Mr. Crais should take the hint from Dennis Lehane and William Lashner, and take some well deserved time off to recharge his classic crime-busting mojo. And should he take this hiatus, Crais fans take heart - their are plenty of great new writers - Huston, Swierczynski, Gischler, McKinty, Doolittle and more - to fill the gaps while the old guys like Crais and Child take a vacation to remember the kind of writing that got them to the top.Chasing Darkness: An Elvis Cole Novel (Elvis Cole Novels) Overview

Best Served on a Cold Dish ReviewI am extremely picky with books. If a book doesn't intrigue me within the first chapter, I typically do not finish reading the book. I was extremely happy to have read, Best Served on a Cold Dish, because I was automatically drawn into this book from the beginning. I actually read the book in one day. I couldn't put it down. It made me laugh, cry, wonder, and sparked my interest throughout the entire book. I recommend this book to anyone, and I will be looking for more books by this author.

Requiem for an Assassin (John Rain, No. 6) ReviewFor those of you who might have stumbled on this book without knowing the full scope of things, you will want to start the John Rain series from the beginning. The books in order are: Rain Fall, Hard Rain, Rain Storm, Killing Rain, the Last Assassin, and now Requiem for an Assassin. All are outstanding reads. If you pick up in the middle or here at the tail end, you will really be doing yourself a disservice. Get to know the characters in the same order as Barry Eisler did.
I'm a big John Rain fan. The books have done an excellent job of addressing a previously unfilled niche - not since Lustbader's early works anyway. John Rain, the protagonist, is the cool international ex-CIA operative, half Japanese, half American - patriot, father, and remorseless killer. Trained in classical Japanese Judo, and master of assassination via accidental causes. The killing style is unique and different - comparable to what Trevanian brought to Shibumi with his killing with common items (e.g. ballpoint pen, cards, etc.).
The latest installment is in my mind an improvement. I've really enjoyed all the books, but I felt the Last Assassin had a bit too much drama and fell slightly short of high-octane action seen in early books. In one review, it was compared to Desperate Housewives... unfair but funny. Fortunately, Requiem remedies that complaint in high fashion. I definitely can't agree with any "wussification" claim, because Rain is as ruthless and brutal in this Requiem as any of the pevious ones. That said, there is clearly a struggle between his "iceman" killer self and a softer emotionally-reachable person. But I in no way found that to detract from the character.
Like most good stories, John Rain is the reluctant actor. He wants to escape his role as a killing pawn (something he fears defines him), and take on what might be even more difficult challenges - regular life with women who both love and hate him, and a child who doesn't know he's his father. Of course that wouldn't make much of a story, so in steps Jim Hilger (the ex-CIA bad guy). He snatches the fun-loving sniper, Dox, who at times can't tell men from women, and uses him as leverage to get Rain to do three final kills. Fortunately, John Rain is experienced enough to ask the tough questions, like why does Hilger want them dead, what are their connections, and what assurances are there that he can be trusted to release Dox. With help from Kanezaki, Boaz, Delilah, and others, they go about setting things right.
Like all of the books, this book merges both international intrigue (in this case it involves oil) with Rain's personal challenges. That's one reason I recommend you start from the beginning. If you're looking for a stand alone thriller, you might be disappointed or at least not fully appreciate the character development. But if you're looking for a great addition to an outstanding collection, this one is a pure gem. Five stars!

The King of Diamonds ReviewIn 1958 at the Old Bailey in London, David Swain stands on trial for the murder of Ethan Mendel in what has been sensationalized as a crime of passion. David accused Ethan of interfering with his relationship with Katya Osman. Oxford Detective Inspector William Trave testifies, which is a prime reason Swain is convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Although he did his duty, something about the case annoys Trave.
Two years later, Trave's marriage to Vanessa falls apart. At the same time Katya's diamond dealer paternal Uncle Titus lends his support to the DI while ironically having an affair with Vanessa. Osman also conceals that he and his brother-in-law former Nazi sympathizer Franz Claes have kept his niece locked away in her home. Meanwhile, acrimonious and raging Swain works on his escape in order to kill his duplicitous former girlfriend. Just after Swain succeeds in breaking out of prison, someone murders Katya. Although the obvious suspect is the escaped convict who swore he would kill his former lover but Trave hypothesizes that her uncle and his in-law murdered the niece and Mendel. The problem with his theory is his motives re Vanessa.
Although a bit over the top of the Old Bailey, the second DI Trave police procedural (seer The Inheritance) is a super exciting thriller that transports readers back to 1960 Oxford. Trave is terrific as he investigates the second homicide tied to Katya, but this time she is the victim. His peers scoff at his theory as Swain is an easier culprit to hang and besides Trave has a motive to want Osman to hang because his estranged wife and the King of Diamonds dealer are having an affair. Fans will enjoy Simon Tolkien's entertaining historical thriller.

The Hard Way (Jack Reacher, No. 10) ReviewI'm a big Lee Child fan. As far as I'm concerned, the tight-lipped, human arsenal Jack Reacher is the most compelling figure in contemporary escapist thriller fiction. So when I tell you that "The Hard Way" is the best novel of its kind to hit the shelves in the last few years, I'll admit I'm biased.
This is the tenth in the Reacher series, and it may be the best. In "Hard Way", trouble finds Reacher innocently enough, sitting in a New York sidewalk caf' sipping an espresso. Events unwind, and soon our hero is locked-and-loaded in solving a kidnapping, thick as thieves with a team of mercenary thugs, contemporary soldiers of fortune with shady backgrounds led by former Special Forces colonel Edward Lane. Lee Child is at his best when spinning a good mystery for Reacher to solve, and nagging incongruities surrounding the kidnapping of Lane's wife and daughter provide the perfect backdrop for Child to practice his craft. "The Hard Way's" Reacher is a bit wiser, more mature, using more brain and less brawn. More Sherlock Holmes and less Rambo this time around. In fact, more than 300 pages have turned before Reacher actually hurts someone, but the Child layers the tension and drops hints masterfully, leading up to a climax that will have you sweating right through your Barcalounger. The author's patented lean and no-nonsense prose is in top form, but what makes Child so readable are the obscure little bits of knowledge and factoids tucked away in cracks and corners of the plot, adding enough depth and authenticity to give the larger-than-life Reacher credibility that sets him apart from the just plain silly superheroes of so many "thrillers" of the day.
So to wrap it up, "The Hard Way" is about as good as it gets - intelligent, clever, a .50 caliber pressure tank tale that twists and turns and jumps from Greenwich Village to Africa's west coast - of bad guys doing bad things and paying the price to an avenging angel in the form Jack Reacher. One word of warning: don't start reading this unless you've got some free hours ahead, for once started, "The Hard Way" is likely to trash plans for the weekend or keep you up way past bedtime. But the again, I'm biased.

Bad Luck and Trouble (Jack Reacher, No. 11) ReviewThere are many reasons to admire Jack Reacher, the taciturn hero of Lee Child's "Bad Luck and Trouble." He is a low-maintenance individual who travels with just his passport, ATM card, and toothbrush. He is incredibly strong and an expert in weaponry and hand-to-hand combat, and will go out of his way to protect the people he likes and respects. Reacher is also intelligent, intuitive, and creative; by thinking out of the box, he usually finds the answers to whatever questions are puzzling him.
In "Bad Luck and Trouble," Reacher has a reunion of sorts with three of his buddies from the army, Frances Neagley, Karla Dixon, and David O'Donnell. They reunite because of a tragic event: Calvin Franz, who worked with them years ago in the military police, was thrown out of a helicopter in the California desert after suffering unspeakable torture. The victim left behind a wife and little boy. Three other MPs from the same special investigations unit, Jorge Sanchez, Tony Swan, and Manuel Orozco, have disappeared, as well. Reacher and his remaining ex-colleagues band together to find out what happened to these men and why. He is also plotting revenge: "There are dead men walking, as of right now. You don't throw my friends out of helicopters and live to tell the tale." The slogan that Reacher and the others live by is: "You do not mess with the special investigators."
Lee Child's Reacher is a modern day cowboy, who generally travels alone from town to town, minding his own business. Yet, somehow, "bad luck and trouble" always manage to find him. This time, in a refreshing variation on Child's usual formula, Reacher takes his place as the commanding officer of a tightly knit and focused team, each member making his or her own invaluable contribution to the investigation. Neagley is smart and tough, and she has plenty of money to bankroll their operation. Dixon is a forensic accountant with a sharp mathematical mind, equal to Reacher's. O'Donnell is fast, powerful, and fearless. This formidable foursome is pitted against a group of ruthless adversaries who always seem to be one step ahead of them.
Child has created a cadre of well-drawn heroes, and the fast-paced action never flags. The terse, often dryly humorous dialogue is enormously entertaining. In addition, some nifty mental puzzles are thrown in to challenge the investigators' powers of deduction; brawn without brains just doesn't cut it in today's world. On the downside, the villains are one-dimensional and the finale is a bit too pat to be believed, even in a fantasy such as this. Still, this novel is great escapist fun; it will have wide audience appeal among long-time Reacher aficionados, and it will probably earn the author a host of new fans, as well.

Collision ReviewIn Hawaii on his honeymoon with his beloved Emily, consultant Ben Forsberg goes to take a shower anticipating more sex before they catch the plane back to the mainland. When he finishes his shower, he finds Emily lying dead in a pool of blood. Two years later; Ben still grieves his loss and has not been on a date with another woman since the tragedy that has become a cold case to everyone but him.
In Austin, sniper Nicky Lynch and cleaner Jackie are to take out the big man and the computer geek Adam Reynolds. Nicky fires at both and watches them fall; he assumes they are dead. Instead not long afterward the big man kills the sniper. Former CIA agent "Pilgrim" wonders why he was set up to die by he assumes his handler or his superior as the objective to frame Forsberg for a murder seems to have included eliminating the consultant's only witness to his innocence. Instead Pilgrim decides to team up with a beleaguered Forsberg to uncover the truth and take down who wants them dead. Forsberg does not trust the operative, but has no choice as someone has set him up to take a homicide fall and that someone wants him dead so he has no trial. What the corporate suit also does not know is his historical connection to Pilgrim; what he believes is the agent plans to terminate the partnership once he cleans out those who want him dead.
The keys to this powerful thriller are Ben and Pilgrim seem real in a deadly cat and mouse game against unknown foes though Pilgrim has a good idea who the opposition are. The story line is fast-paced from the opening sequence two years ago in Hawaii and never decelerates until the final twist of several occurs; ironically even when the reader expects a certain spin because Jeff Abbott is known for that, we marvel at the deftly twist the plot takes. This is an entertaining action thriller that fans will enjoy.

The Nightmare Thief ReviewI'm a great fan of Meg Gardiner's. Have been since she published her first book, "China Lake," which featured her intrepid character Evan Delaney squaring up against The Remnant, a fanatical church whose members use violence to create their heaven on earth. Following "China Lake," Gardiner gave us "Mission Canyon," "Jericho Point,""Crosscut," and, finally, "Kill Chain." With each novel, Gardiner honed her talent, shone brighter, and wove a tighter story.
Gardiner put Evan aside after five books, turning her sights to Jo Beckett, a forensic psychologist living in San Francisco. The first Jo book, "The Dirty Secrets Club," gained Gardiner a new circle of thriller fans, and each book in the series has upped the ante on action and thrills. The Jo books now number four, with "The Memory Collector," "The Liar's Lullaby," and now "The Nightmare Thief." In this latest book, Gardiner pulls out all the stops, gripping her readers from the get-go and not letting the action slow even for a moment as she follows Jo and her partner Gabe as they struggle to survive in the wilderness, while being hunted by trained killers.
It's an action thriller, but Gardiner takes the time to develop her characters, from full portraits to single-stroke images that are seared into the reader's mind. She knows her characters, both the main ones and the toss-asides, and, as a result, every action they take is believable, and inevitable. That's just excellent storytelling.
The story is filled with twists and turns, as are most of her novels, but every single thread is tied up by the end, with nothing left hanging loose or unexplained. The storyline makes sense in the end, and the reader understands the connections and seeming-tangents. Again, excellent storytelling.
Do yourself a favor. If you've never read a Gardiner book, start with this one. Just jump right in. (If you're the kind of reader who must know the beginning, then start with "The Dirty Secrets Club" and then choose any book after that.) If you have read her, continue. Unlike some authors who seem to "phone it in" after publishing their first few books, Gardiner clearly strives for perfection with each and every novel. Mystery Writers of America Presents The Rich and the Dead ReviewThe premise of the original short story anthology THE RICH AND THE DEAD, commissioned by the venerable Mystery Writers of America organization, is a simple one: each story deals with a crime occasioned and/or motivated by great wealth --- either keeping it or acquiring it. The 20 stories selected by editor Nelson DeMille in turn demonstrate a collective wealth of talent and imagination, one that transcends the mystery genre. DeMille, possibly by accident but probably by design, balanced his selections almost equally by authors who are known to the reading public and those who should and will be. The result is a volume full of surprises, both expected and unexpected.
It is wonderfully and joyously difficult to pick one story in THE RICH AND THE DEAD over another. The best one? It's close, but I would have to give the nod to "The Pirate of Palm Beach" by Ted Bell. This tale of a gossip columnist crossing swords with a rakish and wealthy con man features unforgettable characters, laugh-out-loud dialogue, and more twists than you would expect in less than 30 pages. It has "Best Short Story" written all over it.
As will occur with the best of anthologies, my favorite keeps changing, but the nod would have to go to "Bling, Bling" by David DeLee, who, despite being a native New Yorker and living in New Hampshire, somehow captures my hometown of Columbus, Ohio, perfectly in this story about a wealthy but streetwise rapper who may be at the end of his game.
Every story has something to recommend it. Harley Jane Kozak's "Lamborghini Mommy" points up the painful differences between the rich and the super-rich. The story is quite wonderfully told through the voice of a divorced mom who --- horrors! --- has to work and must contend with a false murder rap on top of her fall from grace. The closing sentence of the story, by the way, is one of the best I have read in a long time. The venerable David Morrell is here as well with "The Controller," an instructive tale that teaches, among other things, the difference between a "bodyguard" and a "protective agent." It also features an interesting mystery, one with layers to it, wrapped in the trappings of a thriller.
Of course, when one thinks of a rich criminal these days, Bernie Madoff immediately comes to mind, and Twist Phelan comes up with an extremely well-done variation on that theme with "Happiness," an in-the-room look at what occurs as a family gathers one last time, among the spoils of ill-gotten gain, before their patriarch reports to prison. The author isn't the only twist associated with the story, as various members of the household jockey for positions while U.S. Marshals look on very carefully.
Not all of the stories deal with rich crooks, however, or at least entirely so. Jonathan Santlofer is represented with "Richie and the Rich Bitch," in which the Richie of the tale is a thief for hire who gets ripped off after doing an art heist and decides to do some ripping back. "Richie," which is dark, gritty and has a surprise ending, reminds me of a celluloid feature that Alfred Hitchcock would have loved to direct.
I could keep going. Peter Blauner makes a most welcome return with "Thank God for Charlie," about a fading Hollywood actress who uses and is used. Carolyn Mullen's "Poetic Justice" is a very literary historical tale about a wealthy and abusive factory owner who gets his comeuppance, as does the reader. And I haven't even talked about the stories by Lee Child, Michael Connelly (a Harry Bosch tale, no less!), S. J. Rozan, Nelson DeMille, and a host of others whom I feel badly about failing to mention by name and deserve to be. What higher praise for THE RICH AND THE DEAD can I give than to tell you that you will be richer for having read it?

One Rough Man: A Pike Logan Thriller ReviewI am always intimidated to write book reviews simply because others before me sound like they are writing their thesis but One Rough Man deserves my time and energy on a review. I am more of an Emily Giffin kind of girl so this is my first fiction thriller novel. I heard Brad Taylor on a radio interview in Chicago and found him not only incredibly intelligent and knowledgeable about his content but I could also tell that he has a keen sense of humor. He was light hearted in a professional sort of way. That being said, I saw his book at the airport, bought it and then couldn't put it down. It's just really a good read. I don't have a thesaurus on hand to embellish my thoughts so just go with the fact that it's a darn good story that moves fast and keeps you entrenched with a lot of good details. Brad really has a knack with the details, especially when describing the bad guys which, as Americans, we all want a better idea about. Since he knows a thing or two about real bad guys, this makes the book all the more enjoyable. As I read it I pictured the author experiencing similar situations with similar people because, well, he actually has. Oh, and I also found little pieces of his humor in the book as well (something tells me that Brad once threw eggs at the principal's house too). I would really enjoy attending a lecture hosted by Mr. Taylor. I bet he is really, really captivating in person. This girlie girl is now a full fledged thriller fan. Thanks for the read Brad! Targets of Opportunity Review

Targets of Opportunity ReviewStephens has a great character flowing from his pen who is bound to arrive on the big screen in no time. Jordan Sandor is one of those rare leading men that combine straight shooting (literally and figuratively), sex appeal, and a sharp sense of humor. In addition to Jordan's throwback, universal appeal, Targets of Opportunity is filled with other colorful characters that create a dynamic battle between good...pretty bad...and pure evil. Stephens does a tremendous job developing each character by giving them an identity and having them fulfill a role in what becomes an incredibly fun, unexpected thriller that covers multiple continents and packs in wonderful local color.
Novels fail in this genre (at least for me) based on being unrealistic, too simplistic, and/or lack of interesting characters. Targets manages to combine a wonderful cast of characters with a fast paced, all-too-realistic plot that forces you to stay up late, and wake up too early to discover what happens next. I fully recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a well written, fun novel, which makes you think about the potential events that may unfold in the upcoming years ahead. Well done on all accounts. Hope there is more to come.Targets of Opportunity Overview

Full Black: A Thriller (Scot Harvath) ReviewDef: "Black Operation" or "Black Ops" is a covert operation typically involving activities that are highly clandestine and often outside of standard military protocol or even against the law.
Def: "Full Black" - a black operation on a six-pack of Red Bull.
Harvath is back and he's in the rare position of having worked a couple of operations that have gone horribly wrong. Because of this, the sand cowards will unleash an attack on America that shocked even me. The maniacal nutcase in this book is named James Standing; a billionaire that hates capitalism (figure THAT out). He has the power, the money, the connections, the strategy, and the brain damage to plan for the destruction and forced socialism of America.
The amount of destruction reeked in this book is pretty staggering even for Thor. As with all of Thor's books, your reading will struggle to keep up with the pace as danger and honor come from all sides and every corner of the globe. `Full Black' is Thor doing what Thor does best; stomping the hell out of the radical Islamic terrorist cowards by our favorite human superhero, Scot Harvath. Thor's books are always current, political, steeped in action, and more than a little controversial. This one is going to tick off a LOT of people. On the menu this time, socialism.
Now, I will be honest and say that this book was the first time that I've ever felt that Brad was preaching at me. I know that a lot of people (usually the ones who don't agree with him) have felt that way about his work in the past. It's no secret as to where Brad stand politically but I never felt like it took away from the story until now. There is a small section near the middle of the book where he just goes off! And I don't mean like your backyard 4th of July going off, I'm talking the six barge San Diego 4th of July bang-slam-a-jamma going off!! Usually Brad does his "preaching" within the context of the story amongst the bullets and blood, but this time I felt it was different.
The paradox here is that I agree with Brad but as a reader it caught me by surprise. That's the only hiccup but I felt it was worth mentioning. He does some more preaching in this book but it was within the context of the story. The conversation between James Standing and Julia is just pure brilliance! I think he needs to cut and paste that into an email and send it to the yahoo's in Washington. The difference was that it was within the context of the story and that's what made it powerful. Some of you may think that I'm off my rocker but I'd love to hear what you think when you read it.
The Carlton Group comes across information about a series of attacks that will not only collapse America financially but collapse us... period. The plans of the terrorists are bold in scope and they have the full backing of socio-psychopath (is that a word)? It's hard to believe that Washington could get any friendlier to the terrorists... but they have. Harvath has had enough and devises a plan so dark and so off the books he must go "Full Black". (No spoilers) Unfortunately, despite his best planning and his dance with lady luck, things happen that will make you wonder how things can ever be the same again in America. Despite that little hiccup in the middle, I highly recommend this next installment of the "don't `F' with America cause Scot Harvath is back" series.Full Black: A Thriller (Scot Harvath) Overview
