Return to Daemon Hall: Evil Roots ReviewToo many YA horror novels get bogged down in romance and teen angst. Not this one. This was a great spooky read with solid scary material appropriate for teen readers. There was no gore, no inappropriateness, and yet it is a story that held enough scariness to haunt me after finishing the book. The illustrations bring the tale to life and the plot adds a horrific backstory to the first book.Return to Daemon Hall: Evil Roots Overview

The Survival Kit ReviewFirst Impressions: I was initially drawn to this book when I read the synopsis and seen similar attributes between this book and one of my favorite movies, PS I Love You. They both have very similar concepts and themes so I thought I would really enjoy reading this book.
First 50 Pages: I never read any other books written by Donna Freitas, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I immediately loved her style of writing and how realistic each of her characters is. The Survival Kit is yet another book with impeccable characters that feel so alive and are easy to relate to. I gobbled up this book in less than a few hours because it was very difficult to walk away from.
Characters/Plot Points/Style of Writing: While the plot isn't exactly original since it has been done before, like I mentioned earlier in the movie PS I Love You, it wasn't boring or predictable in the least. The author put her own spin on an old story by using teenagers to play the main characters.
Rose is the main character and she is my favorite as well. Throughout the book, she is trying so hard to pick up her life and reboot after her mother's tragic death. It's this constant struggle of trying to seem normal again and it was fascinating to see her progress and how much she has changed by the end of the story. Death is never an easy topic to write about, much less write a good story about, but this author handles that tough topic brilliantly. Each person will handle death differently, and in Rose's case she puts her whole life on pause. She seemed like the most realistic of all the characters in this story and I was rooting for her to put her life back on track. Rose's grandmother was a hoot as well. I loved her bluntness and how she always had a way of telling it like it is. She reminded me very much of my own grandmother and I think that is why I enjoyed her character so much.
I loved how the author incorporated music into this story. For anyone who has ever lost someone, hearing songs that remind you of the person you lost can be incredibly difficult. For Rose, listening and enjoying music again is very painful to her and it becomes one of her biggest obstacles in overcoming her grief. It was just another delightful part of this book that felt very realistic to me. When my grandfather passed away, I had a very hard time listening to Eric Clapton's song, "Tears in Heaven." It took me a long time to overcome that hurt whenever I heard that song on the radio.
One thing I feel could have been done much better was the growing romance between Rose and Will, her gardener/boy she goes to school with. There were points in the story where I really loved what the author had done with these two characters as a couple, and other points where I had wished the author could have expanded her thoughts.
Final Thoughts: This is an outstanding, touching and realistic story about how to overcome one of life's hardest obstacles. The author accomplishes this tough obstacle with grace and comes up with this wonderful story. For fans of P.S. I Love You, you need to read this book! It is going to be on my shelves for a long time to come!

Don't Stop Now ReviewWords cannot describe how much I loved each and every page of this novel! Julie's writing doesn't stop. The best way I can describe it is as if you were snapping your fingers fast. Everything moves on a beat! The book is based on two of my favorite subjects: ROAD TRIP and falling in love with your best friend. (And plus any author who talks about the movie Hiding Out is pretty much awesome.)
I ate up Lil and Josh's relationship with a spoon because once upon a time I was Lil. I got it. All those times Josh acted flirty without even realizing it. The way your heart starts to pound with every little graze. Always knowing that they want to be with you even if it may come off as strictly platonic. It couldn't have been more perfect. And Josh's personality was so freaking adorkable! You could see why Lillian had a thing for him, but mainly, and what Julie did so well was you saw exactly why these two were best friends.
To add on the layers that are already in this story, you have Penny. She's the real reason why Lillian and Josh take off on this quest of finding her. You're given journal entries from Penny so I felt like I got to know her very well even when she was present for the novel. It does touch on some dark issues that Penny has been facing with her boyfriend (who is a straight-up douche). I think it was handled nicely and still kept the book flowing without making it seems like things had shifted so much when Penny was introduced.
Now for the road trip part: *sings* awesome! There is something so freeing and wonderful about driving for me so I loved all the interactions between them as they hit hte raod not to mention the crazy stops they made. I felt like I was in the car, windows rolled down, and listening to Elvis with them. Don't let this novel slip past you. Don't Stop Now has all the great elements any good story is supposed to have: fabulous characters, a wonderful plot line, hilarious offbeat and quirky moments, and an author's writing that makes you crave for more!Don't Stop Now Overview

She Loves You, She Loves You Not... ReviewAlyssa is forced to Colorado to live with her mother, a person she barely knows, because her dad finds out that Alyssa is a lesbian. This is almost fine with Alyssa, because things with her girlfriend, and best friends sort of went south and ended poorly. She figures here she can at least start fresh, but everyone refers to her as "Carly's girl". Alyssa doesn't want to be known as her mother's shadow but she isn't strong enough to pave a way for herself. When she meets a girl named Finn while she's out looking for a job, things start to change for Alyssa. She doesn't want to have feelings for everyone, especially if everything will just end badly and hurt all over again. On top of all this she is struggling to uncover her mother's hidden past to see why she was gone all those years.
This was an interesting family drama, about a girl who accidentally comes out to her father (who seems the only person who hadn't already caught on) and how it ends with her being shipped off. It's unfortunate that her father doesn't accept her, maybe it's just the way he found out. Either way it's good to have the perspective of someone that was not accepted by their family. I really loved Arlo from the restaurant. He seemed accepting but sassy (can men be sassy?) and I really enjoyed his commentary throughout the novel. I really enjoy it when you find out what happened to land the main character where they are through short memories scattered throughout the book. It's better than just having it all spilled out. There are secrets and twists and turns and things that keep you wondering. Not only did we have to learn what was in Alyssa's past, but we also got to dive into her mother, Carly's, past. This novel is in the same vein as Julie Anne Peter's other novels, not only about relationships for lesbians, but all the repercussions that surround them--either from being gay, or simply from life itself. Alyssa was left to her own devices much of the time as Carly kept weird hours, and stripped at night. This allowed Alyssa to hang out with Finn, but this is the thing that causes her the most grief. After how bad she got burned in her last relationship, Alyssa doesn't know how to move on really. The mountain air does her good though. If you've enjoyed Julie's other novels you should definitely make sure to pick this one up, it does not disappoint.
First Line:
"The night Sarah and Ben showed up out of the blue."
Favorite Line:
"Through the trees, down a hill, is a magnificent lake seemingly suspended in midair."

Blink & Caution Reviewin a sentence or so: Caution is on the run from her abusive boyfriend and a past that hurts her more and more every day. Blink stumbled into a kidnapping while stealing breakfast from a hotel and is running towards the mystery. their paths will cross and their lives will change.
Blink is 16 and homeless. he's out nabbing breakfast from a hotel hallway one morning when he sees a kidnapping. only it isn't what he expected a kidnapping to look like. for instance, the man being taken seemed to be running the show. and he left his wallet and cell phone in the bloodless, yet obviously set up to look like a struggle, room. as Blink is trying to process this scene, the cell phone rings. it's the kidnapped man's daughter...and she's quite a looker. maybe it wouldn't hurt for him to pick it up and tell her what he knows...or thinks he knows...
Caution is 16 and living with a man named Merlin. now, while he has an incredibly awesome name, Merlin is no one to be a fan of. emotionally and physically abusive and using Caution as a drug mule, Merlin is your definition of scumbag. Caution ends up leaving him, but quite by accident really. once she's out the door, she realizes it's exactly what she needed...but she can't get away. Merlin knows where she is and will not be made a fool. plus, she stole his huge cash stash...so he's got more than enough motive to hunt her down.
Caution meets Blink when she scams him at the train station. she sees this clearly vulnerable boy with a nervous tick who's packing some serious cash. since her money is gone, she's in need of a little padding. all Blink sees an overly chatty girl with a bright blue jacket who just wants to have breakfast with him. Caution's conscience gets the better of her and they end up on the journey to unravel the bizarre kidnapping together.
Blink - who's real name is Brent - is told in second person. i thought initially that was to indicate mental illness, but i don't think that's what the author was getting at. not truly, anyway. Blink has a crappy past that's led him to a life on the street, but he has his wits about him. he's rough, he's hurt, and you pick up pieces of his past along the way.
Caution - who's real name is Kitty - grew up happy. like, storybook happy. but then she caused something so tragic and painful that wounded herself so deeply she feels unworthy of any kind of love.
the chapters alternated characters, which creates a parallel path of discovery before they unite in common purpose. you see where they came from before they come together and start anticipating what might happen when they do finally connect. they both pack so much grief and hurt independently, you'd think that together they would be overwhelmed. you'd be wrong (i was). they grow out of their grief together. they realize that it takes another person to truly invest in us to grow and remember that we deserve to love and be loved. they realize they need each other if Blink is going to get back to being Brent and Caution is going to get back to being Kitty.
i rooted for Blink and Caution independently, and even more so as a team. without being mushy or heavy handed, the read is blunt and says exactly what it means to say. we get the inner monologue of both characters, which is always nice, but there's also a creepy mystery driving the plot along.
at the core, this read was about love. Blink is so desperate for love you'd cringe if he weren't so endearingly unaware of it. Caution feels unworthy of love and can't imagine deserving anything but hurt, but is clearly a caring, thoughtful, and bright girl. their hurt was so tangible for me, which made me root for their own self-acceptance and openness to love all the more. Brent and Kitty will stick with me for a long time.
fave quotes (i usually do one, but since there are two narrators, it made sense to do two okay?):
"The goodness of people, the badness of people. She feels like some plaything of the angels: the kind ones and the fallen." (Caution: 128)
"You moan and twist and jerk, because what does he know about hurt? You are hurt - mightily injured. Not by this hold on you, but by life with its never-ending snares and pitfalls and dire consequences." (Blink: 237)
fix er up: the final resolution was a bit too neat and tidy. it was brief, yet fitting...but i wanted more. a nit-pick, i realize, but there you have it.
