A Scary Scene in a Scary Movie ReviewRene is different, he is OCD and he knows he is. He has a fascination with Batman and superheroes and stays away from all things dealing with the number 13. He knows that other kids find him strange, but he is strangely comfortable in his own skin. Except there are always those few kids that make life miserable for kids like Rene. That kid is Johnny van Slyke. But one day after meeting Gio and becoming friends with him (or as close to friends as anyone has been with Rene) Rene stands up to Johnny and then Rene's life is turned upside down and that's when Rene really learns about life, how to live and who the true superheroes are.
I loved this book. Rene is different. I have never had much dealings with people with OCD but I believe Mr. Blackstone has done his research. He does not paint Rene as a freak or anything of the sort, he just has orders and beliefs and ways of doing things. We all do, just not to the extent that Rene does. I also like Gio. Gio seems cool and befriends Rene, but has problems of his own and through Rene light is shed on his problems. The book is deep but reads as a fun read. I really enjoyed being in Rene's head from the beginning of the book until the end and seeing him grow and change and not change too. It was a really fun ride and this is a book I will definitely encourage my son to read when he is just a little bit older. A Scary Scene in a Scary Movie was definitely a great read!

Vicious Little Darlings ReviewI recently had the pleasure of reading Vicious Little Darlings. I'm an avid reader of sci-fi / fantasy. This being outside my usual genre, I was expecting to be disappointed but thought I would give the book a chance since my friend recommended it so enthusiastically.
VLD is a superbly written story about the friendship between 3 young women, told from the perspective of our protagonist, Sarah Weaver. Prosaically witty, cleverly woven, a study in contradiction. Sarah, Maddy, and Agnes are the most unlikely of friends. Despite the natural rifts arising from their respective socioeconomic stations in life, as fate would have it, our main characters soon find their lives inextricably woven together. All 3 possess a seemingly innocent demeanor, one that the audience would expect of any young college-going debutant preparing to enter society. But beneath their youthful exteriors lurk deeper currents of darkness: emotional scars, human brokenness, and loneliness - issues that one might be less surprised to discover upon the examination of an embittered soul at the end of life. Despite the sometimes disturbingly erratic and eerie behavior of the characters, the author still manages to make us fall in love with them. While Maddy may seem at first read to be the obvious antagonist, the author challenges us to look outside the proverbial box and to question if the true antagonist might more aptly be life itself - that these characters are really all tragic victims of the isolation inherent in our current social construct. While carrying the reader through the untamed terrain of the characters' internal experiences, the author skillfully balances the rawness with notes of beauty and wry humor. The whole effect is exhilarating, experientially bringing the reader into the eye while the storm rages all around. As the story climaxes, it leaves the reader with a sense of breathlessness and hopeful calm. The simple conclusion is artfully subtle, gently urging readers to continue pondering the lives to which they just bore silent witness.
VLD is an impressive and imaginative debut for Katherine Easer, one that highlights her skill and talent as an author with great promise. The book is a page-turner that will entertain and satisfy you. I look forward to her future works!Vicious Little Darlings Overview

Townie: A Memoir ReviewSince receiving my pre-order in the mail weeks before the publishing date, I could not put this book down. I have been a huge Dubus fan since a high school English teacher gave me a copy of the House of Sand and Fog. What makes Dubus such a fascinating writer is his ability to capture the very essence of humanity, be it good or bad. This brilliantly written memoir offers insight into the life of the man behind some masterfully written works of fiction. I am incredibly appreciative of his honesty as a writer and sharing such a personal part of his life. The relationship with his father and the role it played on his life certainly rang true for me, as I could often relate to such similar feelings. The thoughts, ideas, and feelings I experienced while reading this book will certainly resonate for a long time to come. I highly recommend reading this work.Townie: A Memoir Overview
