Stormwater Collection Systems Design Handbook ReviewI studied a structural engineering in college & have no background in hydraulics, but somehow ended up in site-planning. My mentor left my firm & I was left on my own to struggle through drainage designs. This book has been a great complement to the guidelines & regulations I have, and has helped understand the theory behind all the computer based calculations I run.Stormwater Collection Systems Design Handbook Overview

Porous Pavements (Integrative Studies in Water Management & Land Deve) ReviewBruce Ferguson does a good job of quantifying the current state of the art of pervious surfaces development. This is a largely anecdotal study of current installations, and collection of data from many discrete sources. At $140+, this isn't a bedside reading book, but a necessary addition to your technical library for engineers, stormwater managers, and landscape architects.Porous Pavements (Integrative Studies in Water Management & Land Deve) Overview

Authentic Ecolodges ReviewTourism is a double-edged sword, in that in can bring revenue into communities, but can also damage fragile ecosystems and social structures. Eco-tourism, when done well, is a thoughtful and careful way to ensure environmental and social objectives are met, while still offering visitors the opportunity to visit magical and inspiring places. But it is also a buzz-word, applied to any "nature tourism" destination. Hitesh's book looks at places where ecotourism is real, and where local people and communities are both involved in, and benefit from the tourism enterprise, as well as where fragile and beautiful ecosystems and wildlife are protected and carefully managed to avoid destruction. The photography is gorgeous and the book is inspiring and thought-provoking. It will help people who want to be responsible and thoughtful in their travel...and give plenty of ideas to visitors whatever their budget. It is also, just simply, a beautiful book.... the world is such an incredible place!Authentic Ecolodges Overview

Sustainable Construction: Green Building Design and Delivery, Second Edition ReviewSince I am the 1st person to review this book, I want to just say that I started with a smaller book that gave me the basics of green architecture, terminology and the run down on LEED and the USGBC. Next I followed up with this book and I must say that this book was EXTREMELY informative and covered everything in some way. Most of it was covered in detail and what wasnt covered in detail was touched upon, so you had an understanding of every aspect. I would recommend this book to ANYONE who is starting out towards LEED Accredation.Sustainable Construction: Green Building Design and Delivery, Second Edition Overview

EcoMasterplanning ReviewThe first 40 pages are filled with Ken Yeang's idea of how his approach is different from the rest.
The eco frontier architect put his hands on the bigger scale of the space, urban design to masterplans of the small regions to a town concept.
I like the clarity of the writing-introduction, but, I find his Green/Grey/Blue/Red concept layers are still sketchy and they are not meticulously or accurately explored in the rest of the pages/projects further.
Still over the decade, I find his works still refreshing and he often challenges the conventional design process.
The presentation and narrations of the projects selected are not entirely consistent and often hurried to show very inaccurate flashy images here and there, that only confuses the reader.
I don't think he is a visionary master architect of today IMHO. His designs are always linear repetitions of his past works. But, if you need a reference for your eco master plan works in brainstorming stages, this book might be a good bstart, and it comes with some decent diagrams to look at. Again, not accurate or perfected enough.

The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design ReviewI am a property owner considering LEED Certification for a building remodel. As a starting poijnt, I have read the LEED guidelines at the Green Building Council website. However, I was looking for something more substantial to help understand the process. "The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design" fills that purpose.
This Guidebook is written by the HOK Architectural firm which has been one of the leaders in sustainable design. The book has three sections. The first chapters are a check list of design guidelines and questions that one needs to explore during the LEED design process. The second section looks at sustainability issues as related to certain building types and the final section are a series of short articles on LEED projects the firm has worked on.
This Guidebook is on its Second Edition and is invaluable for all those interested in LEED certification. It is well written and clearly organized. It is an expensive book but well worth the price. It is a great introduction into what is becoming an important area of design. Highly recommended. The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design Overview

This Life Is in Your Hands: One Dream, Sixty Acres, and a Family Undone ReviewI was drawn into this book right away, and could hardly put it down once I started reading. The story takes place in a time that seems at once very recent and very far away indeed. The author was born in the late 60's into a family committed to a life that most would consider intense deprivation, although many aspired to it--the life of the homesteader, who would be beholden to none but him/herself. Her parents had heard the siren song of Helen and Scott Nearing and joined them in Maine, purchasing a plot of land upon which they planned to raise their family by the work of their own hands.
And what a lot of work it was! I was a teenager when the Colemans were setting out to be organic farmers, and I read books by J. I. Rodale and the Nearings, fantasizing about the rural life. In my dreams it was so much more carefree! In fact, it was backbreaking and unceasing labor for the parents, and loneliness for the children, especially the eldest, Melissa, who longed for a friend. Soon enough, there was a baby sister to share the adventures of roaming about the farm in (literally) naked innocence, with the freedom to graze on the ripe fruits and explore the woods. Too much freedom, in fact, which eventually led to tragedy and heartbreak.
The family's story is interwoven with the events going on in the world outside, although for Papa, nothing much mattered on the radio broadcasts except the weather report, as he threw himself into making organic crops, enough to feed his family and grow the farm. Mama had to see to storing food for the long winter months while caring for first one and then two daughters, tending the goats and chickens, and helping with all the other farm chores. As it turned out, the "simple" life was not as simple as it seemed.
It's a heartbreaking and brave memoir. Melissa Coleman tells her story with sympathy for all involved, but doesn't shirk the hard details of just what "living the good life" cost her family. This Life Is in Your Hands: One Dream, Sixty Acres, and a Family Undone Overview

Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design With Nature ReviewThank god for the current trend toward the generalization of textbooks.
I don't mean generalization in the sense of broadening or watering-down of subject matter, but rather in writing: many more texts in relatively technical fields are being written so that they can be appreciated interdisciplinarily, but professionals in related and sometimes even slightly-unrelated fields, and other folks who may simply be interested in the topic. It's good marketing, too, of course - it opens up much larger markets both academically and professionally, and as long as the book contains enough authority to convince instructors and professionals to purchase (or trust) it, it's a win-win situation for the publisher and author as well as the audience.
Douglas Farr's Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design With Nature (Wiley, 2008; foreword by Andres Duany) falls into the category of win-win for everyone. A very well-illustrated primer on the subject, it appeals to planners, architects, landscape designers, engineers and other folks interested in integrating their work into the larger natural environment.
Duany - the great architect and urban planner whose work with Arquitectonica shaped what we think of as "Florida modern" and whose current firm, DPZ, has become a de facto leader of the New Urbanism movement - suggests that the problem with such books is often that they most often fail to engage the reader in any kind of dialogue by simply being too technical, or by failing to instruct by simply being too exhortative and dogmatic. Luckily, Farr gives more than enough data and instruction in the dozen linked essays and case studies to instruct - but never loses sight of the fact that he's along with us for the ride, not talking at us but at our elbow, learning along with us, sharing both successes and failures and an honest interest in building communities that complement, rather than exclude, the unmanufactured world.
There's so much more here than just part one's "Case for Sustainable Urbanism." Other sections focus on the type of leadership and communication strategies most helpful in implementing both small and large-scale projects; technical tools and special techniques for community involvement are also explored extensively. Other chapters discuss the role of density, how to approach corridor situations, diagramming neighborhoods and the various types of housing that complement specific types of neighborhoods, "biophilia" - including everything from designing walkable streets to integrating wastewater management - and extensive essays on high-performance buildings and infrastructure. The last section of the book is given over to case studies, which both illustrate the preceding chapters with easy-to-understand real-world examples of sustainable success stories & offer solutions for those of us slogging through similar projects or at an impasse with a particular audience.
I recommend the book without hesitation to any planner interested in integrating sustainable projects in urban infill or exurban growth environments, as well as other aficionados of new urbanism topics. It's an entertaining read AND a necessary reference; it will replace several books on the already-overloaded shelves of a number of planners I know.Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design With Nature Overview

Reinventing the Automobile: Personal Urban Mobility for the 21st Century ReviewThis is a wonderful book to stimulate one's thinking about the future of the automobile and urban transportation. Even if you are skeptical about some elements of the authors' vision, it is likely to enrich your understanding of how technology, design, functionality, and economics interact. Reinventing the Automobile is clearly written, supported with ample attractive and helpful graphics. There is a bit of repetition, though it is probably desirable to help explain synergies among several of the key concepts.
The authors explore four principal ideas: a radical new "DNA" in the design of small urban vehicles (driven by wheel motors, for example); a "Mobility Internet" to help manage traffic flows and promote safety; clean energy, with vehicles powered by electricity and hydrogen; and dynamically priced markets. Most of their discussion centers on two-seaters, either "neighborhood electric vehicles" or "electric city cars" with more range.
These vehicles will not be designed to achieve high speeds, which permits greater flexibility in structure, surfaces, and glazing. Elimination of the engine and the application of "by-wire" technology make it possible to imagine new shapes, and in one design even possible to "fold-up" the vehicles so that they occupy less parking space. Based on an electric "skateboard" chassis the vehicles are modular with relatively few parts, easier to construct and repair.
The authors suggest several applications of information technology to aid drivers, some of which can and do work quite well in cars today (GPS-based navigation systems, devices that receive information about traffic to assist routing, and safety sensors, for instance). More futuristic is their vision that eventually vehicles will be safely self-guided.
Current information technology can also support dynamic pricing applications. Chips that allow toll road access priced differently by time of day are just one simple example. Another that I found intriguing (and seemingly quite feasible already) applies sensors in parking spaces to notify drivers of availability, perhaps with the more desired spaces priced higher to reflect supply and demand.

One section presents an informative discussion of "fractional possession" systems with shared cars available for use on demand (these exist on a small scale in several cities today). The authors show how these systems can be greatly enhanced by dynamic pricing and, especially, when vehicles are able to travel autonomously to distribute themselves to points of need.
There are several important limitations to the authors' ideas. Most obvious is that there will still be a pervasive need for vehicles that are bigger than two-seaters -- family cars, trucks, buses, and so on. How will roadway systems safely accommodate the small guys (not designed to endure impacts with big guys), for instance? Or how can electronic vehicle interconnection work adequately unless nearly all vehicles are appropriately equipped? The authors suggest roadway separation, but that could require a massive infrastructure investment and consume even more space than required for transportation currently. They recognize that there is a chicken-and-egg problem inherent in the infrastructure needs: for example, that unless a widespread charging network is in place many people will be reluctant to use electric vehicles, but that without wide use development of such networks may not be economically feasible.
They offer an outline on how to reach their vision from here, but for the most part it consists of only broad principles and not specifics. The most useful guidance they provide, in my opinion, is that we should build on those "foothold " elements that have already been tested (for example, various kinds of electric and fuel cell electric vehicles, wheel motors, telematics systems, road pricing, bike and car sharing, etc.) and continue to look for synergies among them.Reinventing the Automobile: Personal Urban Mobility for the 21st Century Overview
