Anatomy of a Trend ReviewThis concise book is superior to Malcolm Gladwell's best-seller, The Tipping Point. Gladwell's popular book was based on an appealingly superficial premise: that a trend spreads like a disease, multiplying geometrically until it reaches a population "tipping point," whereafter it increases to epidemic proportions. While that handy metaphor describes how a trend spreads, it doesn't really explain why, nor does it explain why one phenomenon becomes an enduring trend while another becomes just a mere short-lived fad. Unlike Gladwell, who is a journalist, Vejlgaard is a trained social scientist. Like an epidemiologist, he examines modern trends under a microscope, discovering the source of their unique power. He detects, moreover, a traceable and predictable pattern that all true trends tend to follow. An especially valuable book for professionals in advertising, marketing, and product development, and for all the rest of us who want to better understand the material forces that shape our lives.

Just Ask a Woman: Cracking the Code of What Women Want and How They Buy ReviewMary Lou Quinlan interviewed 3,000 women consumers about their desires and buying habits. When you finish her book, you will actually be able to answer the question, "What do women want?" Quinlan's style is direct and personable. She backs up her arguments with quotes from successful CEOs and marketers and with a smattering of do's and don'ts from the world of advertising. The book has heart - after all, Quinlan maintains that for women, business is personal - as well as practical advice, although you may have to dig for it. She provides a lot of information on broad thematic lines, sometimes making it tricky to sort out strategies from stories. This is less of a textbook than Marketing to Women (by Martha Barletta from Dearborn Trade Publishing); it is more research-based and extends beyond communications into comparable hands-on, practical counsel. We suggest this wakeup call about the buying power of women to professionals in marketing, advertising, sales and customer service. Use this primer to decode those mixed signals you've been getting from women in your marketplace - and in your life.Just Ask a Woman: Cracking the Code of What Women Want and How They Buy Overview

Branded Male: Marketing to Men ReviewI have to admit, I'm one of those tough sells Mark Tungate writes about in BRANDED MALE: MARKETING TO MEN. I hate shopping and see it only as an evil necessity. I don't buy trendy, and I hate the whole corporate look because I'll never look like the models that parade around in that attire.
Women have a rougher go of it than men do because our society pushes them into constant upgrades. Men tend to roll along stuck at whatever pinnacle they reached shortly after graduating high school. Generally men buy clothes when they gain weight (of course, the clothes are SHRINKING in the dryer), ruin a favorite shirt, or run out of necessities like tee shirts, socks, and underwear due to attrition. Most men have shirts that have birthdays and anniversaries.
Tungate addresses all these issues in a much more elegant manner than I have here, but I think I've summed up his approach. While shopping for clothing or toiletries is a social experience for most women, giving them the chance to catch up on life stories as well as get a supporting vote for a new and daring purchase, men don't gather like that. I've seen men gather to buy shotguns, and generally they go for a two for one to buy a his and his, bass boats, or golf equipment. Even that doesn't require accompaniment, though. Guys just get together after the initial purchase and ogle each others' goods.
I approached Tungate's BRANDED MALE: MARKETING TO MEN with more curiosity than interest. I like to speculate on what markets are going to open up and how advertisers are going to address them. Being a self-employed novelist, I pay a lot of attention to emerging technology, consumer paradigm shifts, and marketing.
Tungate's tour de force covers clothing, cosmestics, grooming, cars, periodicals and books (which offered me some insights I hadn't considered before and found very interesting), and sex. I thought most of it seemed Euro-centric to a degree, or maybe East Coast here in the United States, but it was intensely readable.
I love history, and Tungate brings a lot of history into the book that I didn't expect. I found the marketing aspect interesting, but I was more taken with the history that he delivers. These manifested as brief snippets laced throughout the text that anchored the points he made and allowed me to better understand what he was saying. I'll bet most readers that pick this book up will experience the same thing.
I actually planned to allow myself time to read a chapter a day, basically covering each of the topics Tungate proposes. Instead, I was sucked in by the writing and compelled to keep turning pages. I hadn't expected to be as captivated by the subject as I was (after all, I am male and we have short attention spans and tend not to over think dress and style).
As a novelist by trade, I found a lot of information in the book that I plan on using in my writing. I know I've read a good book when it finds a place on my shelf (and I've got limited space at this point). BRANDED MALE: MARKETING TO MEN is a great, fun read with plenty of information and marketing tips. The text is broken up into a modified block format (each paragraph has a double-space between it that allows plenty of white space) and that layout actually made the book even easier to read.
If you're interested in marketing, or understanding your husband's reluctance to go shopping even when he needs to, Tungate explains some of what's going on. Anyone that's read Alissa Quart's book BRANDED: THE BUYING AND SELLING OF TEENAGERS will enjoy this one as a follow-up. And if you haven't read Quart's book, you're in for two books that are definite eye-openers.

Something Really New: Three Simple Steps to Creating Truly Innovative Products ReviewThis book goes on the shelf right by Clayton Christensen's Innovator's Dilemma, and Gary Hamel's Leading the Revolution. But of the three, Hauptly's Something Really New might be the best, and certainly will be the most useful.
Innovation books frequently are written by business school professors about their clients. This leads to books that are heavy on theory, and inadequately critical of their subjects.
Hauptly's book is like other Innovation books in that it is concise, readable, and filled with helpful illustrative examples. But the effect is entirely different when the author is an actual Innovator writing for other Innovators about how to Innovate, rather than a color commentator describing action on a distant field.
Gone from Hauptly's account are the fawning success stories. Gone are the complex theories and graphs. Gone even are the unrealistically simple formulas that turn into traps when you try to do it in the real world (think Anthony Ulwick's What Customers Want). What remains is practical advice about how to innovate and how to avoid false innovation.
Hauptly takes us into mind of the Innovator like no other book I have read (even more than Joel Barker's classic, The Business of Paradigms). Not only does Hauptly pave the road for aspiring Innovators, but perhaps more importantly he sets out all the warning signs and side-markers to help avoid common psychological traps. Hauptly takes equal care to explain what is NOT an innovation, which in the real world may be the more vexing problem.
Something Really New is actually two books in one. Although Part One will stand as a major contribution to the literature simply by offering the first true Innovator's Deskbook, I was equally impressed by Part Two, which covers the people issues, organization, and culture of innovation. Where other books dance around these sensitive political issues, Hauptly is direct and pragmatic about how and where innovation can occur, who does it, who stops it, and how.
The book's chat-over-lunch tone and brain-teaser exercises are a sleight-of-hand that will lull some readers into thinking that the book lacks depth. However, the careful eye will note where the conceptual framework shows through (page 81 cannot resist a 2x2 grid; page 107 introduces the phrase "functional contiguity," and of course the concept of net utility is actually dynamite in the presence of false innovation).
The book will be least interesting to academics seeking theoretical exposition, and least welcome by senior executives who would cheer lead for innovation without actually aligning the organization and doing the work. For them, this book offers little.
But as a no-nonsense player's guide to the game, Something Really New is in a league of its own. It will be read by aspiring and experienced product development staff in all industries. Some of the concepts Hauptly introduces, like mutations, net utility, and task linking, may enter the popular lexicon of innovation. But the book is most to likely win the hearts of product developers working in the trenches, among whom word will spread of the brightest light yet shone on a notoriously dark terrain.Something Really New: Three Simple Steps to Creating Truly Innovative Products Overview

Persuasive Advertising: Evidence-based Principles ReviewThis book is outstanding. I have recommended it to my friends who own businesses.
Armstrong, a professor at Wharton, hints in the book that he was trying to create an improved, updated, more scientifically sound version of Ogilvy on Advertising. He succeeded.
What I like:
-The writing is concise and interesting.
-His principles are surprising.
-He describes the principle, then cites research and case studies that solidify the principle in your mind. E.g., Downy first didn't follow the principle. Then Downy changed the ad to follow it, and found that 20% more people remembered the ad, and those people had 30% higher buying intentions.
-He values methodologically sound science. Where a principle is not supported by studies yet, he'll say something like, "This principle is only received wisdom in the advertising industry. It deserves closer study."
I rely heavily on this book while writing copy for my business's website. I can't recommend it highly enough.Persuasive Advertising: Evidence-based Principles Overview

Event Planning Made Easy ReviewHaving consumed several books on the topic, this is an easy to read and useful book with good facts, lists, and questions to ask. It is not as detailed or as comprehensive as others available. Appendix A's sample forms, timelines and documents for planning and evaluating the event and Appendix B's lists of Terms and Phrases are very useful. I think it is good for someone who may wish to plan their own event, but not detailed enough for an individual who wants to become a professional in the industry. Event examples they use are from their professional experience and would not be applicable for one planning a private event. The pictures are in black and white and the detail is not clear. A few excellent color pictures would make a real difference.Event Planning Made Easy Overview

Although the content is limited to the UK case, the book is full of overwhelming information for an expert who wants to compare the cases with other developments elsewhere.
It is an example of "country study" for the shopping centre industry that should be repeeated by other writers in other markets.
It could have been useful to have a c0-author specializing onthe economics-marketing side of the subject.

Small Is the New Big: and 183 Other Riffs, Rants, and Remarkable Business Ideas ReviewMany say you shouldn't give away your work for free if you wish to sell it. Nonsense. Seth Godin has got a big idea with his new book Small is the New Big. This entire book of riffs already exists for free in places such as on Seth's blog or via his Squidoo lens. I've read most of the stories in the book already. Yet I pre-ordered the book on Amazon for overnight delivery because I wanted the content, again, in the new package. I want to take it to the beach. I want to have it on my desk and pick it up now and then.
"you're smarter than they think"
Yes, I'm a Seth Godin fan. Reading his stuff contributed to a life change for me. Back in the late 1990s, I had ideas about how content drives action on Web sites. As the VP Marketing of several reasonably large public companies, I realized that I had "power" and "a good job." In most people's eyes, I was successful. But I just didn't have the right platform to tell the world about my ideas. And I was not fulfilled.
Seth Godin's writing always focuses on getting people like me, those with a fire in the belly to take action. "I've been betting on the intelligence of my readers for almost a decade," Godin writes on the back cover of Small is the new Big, "and that bet keeps paying off. They just don't get it. Now you, you get it... And I'm, betting that once you're inspired you'll actually make something happen."
For me, the big moment was when my company was acquired by a huge organization and I was shown the door. I chose not to take the "safe" route and find another VP Marketing job, but instead to strike out on my own. The "I dare you" messages from Godin were an important part of my life changing decision.
Wow.
I work much harder than before, but fewer hours. I attend very few meetings. I choose the terrific companies I want to work with and tell the idiots to take a hike. I've never missed one of my daughter's swim meets because of work. I have dinner with my family most evenings. I'm helping people make a difference because of my ideas rather than saying "I wish I had..." or "I could, but...".
Read Small is the New Big.
It is an important book. And no matter what you want to do to make a difference, listen to Seth's advice. Just get out there and make it happen.Small Is the New Big: and 183 Other Riffs, Rants, and Remarkable Business Ideas Overview

Perfect Pitch is a powerful call to arms to the lost art of presentation writing and, more importantly, making compelling arguments. It made me realize some bad habits I've fallen into which need correcting and the need to take back control from technology.
I think the most powerful point in the book is the need to build the two minute argument for any presentation before you fire up PowerPoint.Perfect Pitch: The Art of Selling Ideas and Winning New Business (Adweek Books) Overview

We Were Merchants: The Sternberg Family and the Story of Goudchaux's and Maison Blanche Department Stores ReviewIf you don't know the answer to this question, by all means read this book. The title of the book says a lot -- "We Were Merchants", and speaks of understanding customers' needs and satisfying them in an extraordinary fashion, and making a handsome profit while doing it.
This book is a matter-of-fact telling of the history of a remarkable merchandising family, the Sternbergs of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and their stores Goudchaux's and later Maison Blanche. Emigres from persecution in Nazi Germany, they had a keen understanding of the public they served. I grew up in Louisiana, and my mother made at first only one or two trips a year to shop at Goudchaux's. As a young boy, I was taken along, rather as native bearers were taken along on safaris. Then as I grew old enough to drive and then go to college in Baton Rouge, the trips became more frequent but remained genuinely pleasant experiences.
One of the first things I discovered was the Sternbergs did not sit invisibly in their offices. One might be shopping in any department and be waited upon by Hans, Josef, or even their mother, Lea, if things were particularly busy. Each of them truly appeared to be "engaged" by interacting with their customers -- rich or poor. I believe one of the talents making them such formidable forces in retailing was their maintaining a constant relationship with their customers, which gave them insight unmatched by the competition. Another was department managers and sales people were expected to be knowledgeable both of their stock and their customers, and to be adept at skillfully matching each. Their staff seemed remarkably resistant to turnover, and it was not unusual to get to know and respect those you actually bought things from. As I grew to adulthood and entered my profession, this relationship extended to having the salesman who worked with me call me at home when he knew of was a sale about to take place ,or when a new suit in a style I needed was arriving. He knew my sizes, my tastes (and influenced them), and also knew what my wardrobe needs and my budget were.
The most unique thing about Goudchauz's was the "interest-free" charge accounts, which Hans explains in great detail. It made financial and marketing sense at the time.
Contrast this to the average "department store" or general shopping experience in the contemporary mall, and one sees what makes "internet shopping" so attractive.
But back to the book . . . the book is as I remember Hans himself -- succinct, efficient, and utterly without nonsense. While this book appeals to the nostalgic, I would also recommend it to anyone studying marketing, merchandising, popular culture, or the decline of Western Civilization.
The remarkably objective viewpoint of this book makes for a very valuable work to reflect upon what makes for excellence in our lives, and whether our culture has lost an appreciation of excellence. Long before I knew about Covey and his principles, I knew the Sternbergs as they exemplified many of those traits. We Were Merchants: The Sternberg Family and the Story of Goudchaux's and Maison Blanche Department Stores Overview
