Black Diamonds Black Gold: The Saga of Texas Pacific Coal and Oil Company ReviewI read this book a few years ago and loved it. The story of the Texas and Pacific Coal and Oil company seems so typically American. From the crooked Yankee come South who recognizes the coal that was a nuisance to the farmer scratching out a living, the New York financiers who put the enterprise on a secure financial foundation and did very well by themselves in the process, the immigrant miners, prosperous company town, self-taught geololgist who opened up the Ranger oil field, a gas-pump juckey who earned a raise in the midst of the depression selling lube jobs and treating his wife to a mid-week hamburger, the names which dot Fort Worth buildings and streets, this book covers and links up an America and Texas from frontier to the outlines of its present corporate complexity.Black Diamonds Black Gold: The Saga of Texas Pacific Coal and Oil Company Overview

Jackpot Harrah's Winning Secrets for Customer Loyalty ReviewI have read other books by Robert L. Shook, and he is an accomplished writer of business books. He's at his best with Jackpot. This book is both informative and entertaining. Shook takes his reader behind the scenes at Harrah's, a gaming company with 26 casinos and reveals how the company is able to compete so successfully against billion-dollar properties in the Las Vegas market. Harrah's secret, as the subtitle states is how it wins customer loyalty and does it better than its competition. This is an excellent book for any business reader engaged in a highly competitive industry, and, in particular, goes head to head with the big boys. Shook's writing style is superb--he interwines anecdotal material that makes for a fascnating read. True, this is a business book, but at times, it's such a page-turner, you feel you're reading a novel.Jackpot Harrah's Winning Secrets for Customer Loyalty Overview

Rocketdyne: Powering Humans into Space (AIAA Education) ReviewI am hungry for liquid rocket engine information, this book helped satisfy that hunger, I loved the authors writing style and found the book easy to read and informative,it was a joy to read about the people involved and the troubles they had to overcome to create these masterpieces of engineering and power, I have already read it a second time, I enjoyed it so much. I have only one criticism of the book and this is a blanket criticism of all of the books that I have bought from AIAA, they should have used a better quality paper, the illustrations were muddy, some of the photos were too small or too dark, like they were not edited for contrast, etc., and a better quality paper would have made all of them clearer, when I look at rocket engine photos I'm looking for details and sometimes the details were unintelligible, BUT, there was a wealth of photos, it's loaded, and a lot of effort was expended by the authors to get them into the book. I feel this a very important book and am glad that it's now part of my library.Rocketdyne: Powering Humans into Space (AIAA Education) Overview

The Great Society Subway: A History of the Washington Metro (Creating the North American Landscape) ReviewThe author obviously spent a great deal of time doing research in preparation for writing this volume. It not only covers the history of the capitol's subway system, but the social and economic factors leading up to its construction. A very throught provoking history of a unique transportation system. The Great Society Subway: A History of the Washington Metro (Creating the North American Landscape) Overview

We Were Merchants: The Sternberg Family and the Story of Goudchaux's and Maison Blanche Department Stores ReviewIf you don't know the answer to this question, by all means read this book. The title of the book says a lot -- "We Were Merchants", and speaks of understanding customers' needs and satisfying them in an extraordinary fashion, and making a handsome profit while doing it.
This book is a matter-of-fact telling of the history of a remarkable merchandising family, the Sternbergs of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and their stores Goudchaux's and later Maison Blanche. Emigres from persecution in Nazi Germany, they had a keen understanding of the public they served. I grew up in Louisiana, and my mother made at first only one or two trips a year to shop at Goudchaux's. As a young boy, I was taken along, rather as native bearers were taken along on safaris. Then as I grew old enough to drive and then go to college in Baton Rouge, the trips became more frequent but remained genuinely pleasant experiences.
One of the first things I discovered was the Sternbergs did not sit invisibly in their offices. One might be shopping in any department and be waited upon by Hans, Josef, or even their mother, Lea, if things were particularly busy. Each of them truly appeared to be "engaged" by interacting with their customers -- rich or poor. I believe one of the talents making them such formidable forces in retailing was their maintaining a constant relationship with their customers, which gave them insight unmatched by the competition. Another was department managers and sales people were expected to be knowledgeable both of their stock and their customers, and to be adept at skillfully matching each. Their staff seemed remarkably resistant to turnover, and it was not unusual to get to know and respect those you actually bought things from. As I grew to adulthood and entered my profession, this relationship extended to having the salesman who worked with me call me at home when he knew of was a sale about to take place ,or when a new suit in a style I needed was arriving. He knew my sizes, my tastes (and influenced them), and also knew what my wardrobe needs and my budget were.
The most unique thing about Goudchauz's was the "interest-free" charge accounts, which Hans explains in great detail. It made financial and marketing sense at the time.
Contrast this to the average "department store" or general shopping experience in the contemporary mall, and one sees what makes "internet shopping" so attractive.
But back to the book . . . the book is as I remember Hans himself -- succinct, efficient, and utterly without nonsense. While this book appeals to the nostalgic, I would also recommend it to anyone studying marketing, merchandising, popular culture, or the decline of Western Civilization.
The remarkably objective viewpoint of this book makes for a very valuable work to reflect upon what makes for excellence in our lives, and whether our culture has lost an appreciation of excellence. Long before I knew about Covey and his principles, I knew the Sternbergs as they exemplified many of those traits. We Were Merchants: The Sternberg Family and the Story of Goudchaux's and Maison Blanche Department Stores Overview
