Remembering the Twentieth Century Limited ReviewAs always, Matthew Stevenson's essays -- part travelogue, part history, part literary narrative - are immensely satisfying. With this collection, he adds serious investigative journalism to a unique blend of genres. His fluid prose and humor appear so effortless, that only a writer who is expending a great deal of effort can achieve it. Despite choosing a number of well-covered topics, he dives into each on a unique journey of personal exploration, carrying along readers who, like me, seriously need vicarious travel with a literate guide. He brings his own compelling perspectives to the Alger Hiss story and the war-ending assault on Japan; new historical approaches to Armenia, the Balkans, and Lebanon; and an Intro to Banking in the form of a brief disquisition on the Medicis and their modern successors. Even critics of sports doping will come away with something to think about. The best thing about a collection of good essays is that you can actually read them in pieces - say, on the Amtrak from Baltimore to Penn Station - without losing the flow. On the train, exactly as the author intended.Remembering the Twentieth Century Limited Overview

South of the Big Four ReviewThis gentle tour de force is a quintessentially American story yet unlike anything I've read. The characters are original and unforgettable. Five or six times in the course of reading the work, you think you know where Kurtz is going -- but you don't. The language is beautiful throughout but its not an end in itself -- there's a very great, very real story here and its heartbreaking. What whisky is in Hemmingway, work is here. Don't laugh -- unless you can write better than Kurtz.South of the Big Four Overview

The Bronx Lost, Found, and Remembered 1935-1975 ReviewThis was a wonderful reminisience of my childhood in The Bronx from shopping at Alexander's, Loehman's and the Palace Movie theater. Even found Mayers Ice Cream Parlor on E 219th Street and White Plains Road where I used to get sundaes and the best egg creams made by Joe Brancato! Never found one better. And the piece I noticed was written by my St. Mary's grade schoolmate, Carlo Gambino!! Lots of great photos. I highly recommend this book. The Bronx Lost, Found, and Remembered 1935-1975 Overview
