Couple Talk: How to Talk Your Way to a Great Relationship ReviewWhere was this book when my ex-husband kept telling me it's not what you are saying it's how your say it that is annoying. I asked him to tell me the correct words but he didn't know them either. I've been trying the correct phrases for only about 2 weeks since I received the book and I am surprised at the positive responses and open communication I'm getting from everyone.Couple Talk: How to Talk Your Way to a Great Relationship Overview

The Aging Intellect ReviewHaving had the privilege of being mentored by Dr. Powell in my own doctoral program at Harvard, it is certainly gratifying to see that he can produce yet another of his lucid (well, at least demi-lucid) contributions to geriatric health matters, even while himself (almost ?) an octogenarian ! While Dr. Powell's expressions of academic intellect do, at times, seem to wander a bit into the vague, he is--on the whole--focused and clear. The book is most certainly worth at least a scan with one's morning green tea, DMAE, acetyl-l-carnitine, and online synaptic challenge games.

The Power of Choice : A Guide to Personal and Professional Self Management ReviewThis is an exceptionally lucid exposition of the power of personal choices in each of our lives. It also details the innumerable ways in which we all do everything we can to deny the choices we have in our lives and how the evasion of personal responsibility serves only to psychologically weaken us.
One thing that hasn't been mentioned by any of the previous reviewers is that Ted Willey uses some of the key language and notions of Werner Erhard and the old est movement to forward his ideas. He does so in a way that is highly conversational, rational and communicative, without any of the controversial baggage that made est and its later incarnation, the Landmark Forum, so unpalatable for so many people. For this alone I appreciate Ted Willey's book. Erhard had some great perspectives, learned from his own personal experiences and also from therapists such as Fritz Perls. Unfortunately for Erhard (as well as for Perls), his overall lifestyle was eccentric enough and his packaging of his ideas controversial enough that the message was lost in the sometimes bizarre medium of its expression. Ted Willey's book manages to bypass all of that. His expression of fundamentally sound ideas is framed in a way that is immediately understandable. The average person stands to gain a great deal from reading and applying the concepts presented in The Power of Choice.
In conjunction with The Power of Choice I might recommend John Narciso's book Relating Redefined as well as William Glasser's book Choice Theory. They all complement each other and are most relevent in this time of personal and cultural abdication of responsiblity. The Power of Choice : A Guide to Personal and Professional Self Management Overview

You Don't Have to Learn the Hard Way: Making It in the Real World: A Guide for Graduates ReviewI see where another reviewer rated this book poorly because they didn't believe all the hyped up reviews. I think that is a completely unfair review and perhaps would be better suited as feedback to reviews as opposed to a stand-alone rating of the book.
I've got the book sitting in front of me as I type this review, and I will say that all the positive reviews are very fair representations of what this book has to offer.
I honestly believe this book is suited not only for graduates, but also for parents. It is filled with life lessons we should all take time to teach our children.
It works really well for young adults because there are quizzes in each section that allow self-reflection. I believe this makes the book very appealing for those who need it most: college graduates and high school graduates.
For people like me - middle aged with young children, I can take the lessons in this book and apply them to not only my future, but also the future of my children.
FOR EXAMPLE: Chapter four is all about dating, marriage and parenting. Parrish's goal for the chapter is to advise the reader on making good decisions on the topic. Most Americans will tell you there is a serious problem with the way our teens and young adults relate to partners when it comes to dating and marriage. With almost half of all marriages ending in divorce, we honestly do need some good life lessons on the topic. In a numbered list in the chapter, Parrish reminds the reader to remember marriage is about trust and companionship, and not to let the physical excitement we feel during dating to rule whether or not our partner is worthy of our hand in marriage.
Hopefully Parrish's words and the format of this book will encourage young adult readers to consider the ramifications of each decision they make, how to realize a dream and make it come true, and how to truly become the person they aspire to be. It's certainly filled with great advice and life lessons and I look forward to sharing this with those I care about! You Don't Have to Learn the Hard Way: Making It in the Real World: A Guide for Graduates Overview

Letitia Baldrige's New Manners for New Times: A Complete Guide to Etiquette ReviewI originally requested this book for Christmas because of both Ms. Baldrige's conservative reputation and the fact that it was said to address the roles of gays and lesbians in the family. I was not disappointed. It is a fabulous general etiquette book that my mother could respect and would read. And it includes my lifestyle too!
With so much controversy going about these days regarding the definition of family, Ms. Baldrige provides us with guidelines that allow all of us to congregate in peace and without shame. Her anecdotes effectively illustrate her points and are quite funny at times. She also obviously knows how to have a good time-- and in a way that is level-headed and won't alienate those at the more conservative end of the spectrum.
Ms. Baldrige is one of those sort of people you really have to work hard to dislike. And her years of experience lead to a wise commentary that is hardly dated. In her own way, she gives all family members permission to love one another without a bunch of anxiety over who is doing what that isn't anyone's business anyway. And she provides all the tools you need, in the form of advice, to throw a great party. When's the next family reunion? I actually want to go now! :-)Letitia Baldrige's New Manners for New Times: A Complete Guide to Etiquette Overview

Get Off Your "But": How to End Self-Sabotage and Stand Up for Yourself ReviewThis book has endorsements from big names ranging from the business literature (Ken Blanchard) to the self-help gurus (Susan Jeffers). The back jacket has a quote from former President Bill Clinton ("Sean is an amazing person with an important message"). Tony Robbins wrote the Foreword.
At this point, I could probably end the review because when those movers and shakers recommend a book what more do you need to know? Just get the book. Ah, this is a "but" situation! "I could write a review but" with those endorsements from such successful people...." The "but" situations we encounter every day can have far more profound effects than missing the opportunity to review a book of this caliber.
Sean's style is one of encouraging and prodding, but he's not a rah-rah guy. He's a realist. According to brain researchers (see my other reviews of brain-related books), reality is largely what we make it. The brain filters and repackages information before the conscious mind sees it, largely based on preconceptions and what it "ought to" see. The brain is, essentially, a predictive computer and it will predict based on what it perceives rather than what it senses. That is, it makes its own reality. This fact has only recently been verified in the neuroscience field (physical brain studies) but has long been a fundamental premise on the motivational lecture circuit.
Why is Sean a realist instead of a cheerleader? After all, anyone who is successful on the lecture circuit has it made, right? Classic silver spoon, right? Not right.
Years ago, I learned about a rare disease thanks to the movie "Unbreakable" (came out in 2000, starring Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, and Robin Wright Penn). In this movie, Jackson's character (Elijah) has extremely brittle bones. The movie has several flashback scenes that give us insight into what Elijah's life was like growing up. The movie starts off with his birth; he's born with broken bones.
Sean has that rare disease, and was born with broken bones. His condition makes his life very complicated. He didn't come from a life of ease, but has had to overcome enormous obstacles. He's now a PhD and licensed psychotherapist. He's completing a second PhD (clinical hypnosis). He's an internationally known professional speaker.
And he's three feet tall.
Reading this book, I could not help but feel a strong connection with Sean. He comes across as a person who just wants to help others. He makes his message simple and clear, but at the same time he helps the reader dig into complex challenges.
This book consists of seven chapters, a foreword, an epilogue, and a resources area.
The Foreword by Tony Robbins was very touching and helped me understand what an amazing person the author is. As I have a high opinion of Tony Robbins (whose critics have been forced to eat crow due to discoveries in brain science over the past few years), his endorsement means a lot. He didn't just throw out a few platitudes and empty praises. He made a point of explaining why Sean's book is a "must read." Tony "brings to life" what he's saying, through specific examples.
Chapter One. Born to Kick But: The Short Story of a Big Life. This is an autobiographical sketch. Here, we learn about Sean's childhood, the challenges he faced, and the object lessons he learned. He introduces us to his core philosophy: cause and effect. It's not a new concept and thus it's not something he made up to attract an audience. I've understood this concept for a very long time, but Sean helped me see it with greater clarity.
Chapter Two. Lesson 1: Start Connecting. There's a huge difference between merely communicating and actually connecting with others. I'm not a fan of President Clinton, but the man is an expert on connecting with people. In this chapter, Sean lists "Ten things I learned about connection from President Bill Clinton." Sean knows Clinton personally, so this isn't an armchair observation kind of thing. This chapter has lots of great information for anyone frustrated with relationships (business or personal).
Chapter Three. Lesson 2: Watch What You Say to Yourself. This gets into the traditional inner dialogue stuff, but takes it up a notch or two. One of the things Sean communicates here is your word choices can have a transformational effect (or not, if they are poor choices).
Chapter Four. Lesson 3: Master Your Physical Confidence. You can usually spot a person who has self-esteem issues, can't you? And why is it some people seem to dominate a room, even if they aren't the best-looking, best-dressed, or loudest person in the room? Sean explains why and what you can do about that.
Chapter Five. Lesson 4: Focus Your Focus. As I type this, I have a painful thumb infection. Guess when it hurts the most? When I'm thinking about it! In this chapter, Sean delves into such things as changing your focus from what you don't have to what you can be thankful for. He talks about directing your mind toward what you want to achieve rather than letting your mental powers drown in a pity puddle.
Chapter Six. Lesson 5: Choose Your Friends Wisely. Sean uses the metaphor of a pit crew to illustrate the differences between A Friends, B Friends, and C Friends. He explains that you can choose your pit crew. Avoid the takers, drainers and destroyers. Re-channel that energy into cultivating real friends. Since there's confusion over what a real friend is, Sean makes this clear.
Chapter Seven. Lesson 6: Take Full Responsibility. Either you own your situations, or they own you. When they own you, it's not good. Sean has a simple formula for understanding how to be in control: C > E. That is, cause is greater than effect. He explains how this works and how it can liberate you. As mentioned earlier, Sean is a psychotherapist. If a client will not agree to work with this formula, Sean ends the session and refunds the client's money. That's how important this is.
Epilogue. One Last Thing.... As it's only one page, it's an epilogue rather than a chapter. It's Sean's final piece of wisdom for applying the lessons in the book.
Resources. Sean lists books and movies "that shaped my life." All of these titles are familiar to me. He also lists excellent online resources for various issues.
This book is not one you want to miss. Get your copy today. If you are thinking, "Yeah, but..." then you desperately need it. Don't delay.Get Off Your "But": How to End Self-Sabotage and Stand Up for Yourself Overview

The Noticer: Sometimes, all a person needs is a little perspective. ReviewIf you pick up this book titled THE NOTICER, by Andy Andrews, don't make the mistake I made. Don't wait until bedtime to start reading it. When I picked it up last night, I had every intention of simply reading the introduction and then turning out the light and calling it a day. Having read everything Andy Andrews has written, I knew it would be a good and just wanted to see what it was going to be about. Well, there is no introduction, so I thought I'd just read the first few pages to get a feel for it. I finished reading it around 1:30 this morning. Yes, it's that good.
Okay, it gets even better. Just past midnight, I even got up and ate a plum for a quick midnight snack and told myself, "Okay, you've got a busy day tomorrow. Go to sleep." I turned out the light and it took all of about 3 minutes before I turned it back on and opened the book again. I knew trying to fall asleep was a fruitless endeavor. I simply had to finish the book.
Andy Andrews is one of the finest writers (and public speakers) of our time. If you are not familiar with his work, this book would be a great place to start. For me, it may not have been quite as good as The Traveler's Gift, but that book has had such a profound effect on my life, I may be a little biased. I hope in time, this book will have an equally profound effect and in the few hours since I read it, I have thought about it's messages all day. Those messages are still sinking in and I will certainly read the book again this weekend before I decide who I want to share it with first.
I don't want to spoil the story for anyone, so I will only say the story revolves around a very influential old sage who touches so many lives by simply giving the people he encounters a new persective. When it all boils down to the basics, that's how simple it is in creating the determining factors of our lives. Whether we choose to be happy or miserable all revolves around our perspective.
One of the beauties of this book is that Andrew's deftly applies the "new perspective" principal to so many differing situations. You are sure to find more than a few examples of things that will relate to your own life. There's definately a message here for everyone.
Andy concludes this magnificent story with a Reader's Guide. A few pages of thought provoking questions that will help put it all together for you and would make for an extraordinary group discussion.
For me, personally, the story really helps reinforce my own personal mission - to inspire and empower people professionally, personally and spiritually to elevate their lives to a higher level. There's a little bit of "Jones" in all of us. Read the book and you'll understand exactely what I mean. I give this the highest recommendation possible. The Noticer: Sometimes, all a person needs is a little perspective. Overview
